Having an ill pet is an incredibly difficult situation to be in. We are now living in a time where pet medical care is understaffed and expensive and it’s disheartening to see people blaming a place as caring and helpful as VCA for something out of their control. It can be hard to remember that veterinarians and their staff are merely human and should be treated kindly, but despite the anger I saw directed at them during my visit, they remained calm, generous, and focused on giving the animals their best care. Despite being at capacity they had me being my puppy in. After acknowledging she was very sick they ensured me she was not in danger of immediately dying and allowed me to hold her and comfort her while I waited for her to be seen. It’s excruciating to wait for a vet while panicking your animal might die, but no part of me doubted that there were more crucial cases ahead of me. When my worry became too much they would patiently explain again why I had to wait and reassured me any changes in my puppy’s condition would be dealt with. My dog was very ill and required a three day stay and some extensive testing…incredibly expensive but this should surprise no one. Emergency care is expensive but not once did I feel anyone at VCA was gleeful when quoting me prices. Medicine is expensive and there is just no getting around that. Once my puppy was admitted the vet treating her called me daily with updates and took as much time as I needed to fully understand the complications and what they were recommending. They allowed me extra visiting time and a quiet space to rest with my dog for as many hours as they could give me before taking her back for treatments. I am one of the lucky ones that got to bring my pet home and I truly believe it’s because the staff is genuine and works relentlessly to offer extra care and attention. All this despite an outrageously packed schedule that demands every bit of their expertise and ability. VCA had to look hard to figure out why my puppy was so ill and they never gave up until they found the root of the problem. I am forever grateful for their time and caring and expertise. They may only be human but they will go above and beyond to save your pet. My puppy is proof of that and I feel incredibly lucky I found them. Thank you VCA for getting her healthy and giving me more time with her. You saved her life and my heart cannot be more grateful.

Sadly I have to change from 4 starts to 1 star, if I could give 0 star, I would. I just had a conversation with VCA General Manager Jason Kill, a very nice talking person who talked loudly on the phone to explain why the clinic can't refund my money for the unopened medication by law. I explained to him that my dog passed away and surely the clinic can refund my money and donate the medication to the charity or local shelter on behalf of VCA if you truly want to help animals and patients. He told me if they refund my money, they would suck up the cost of the medication. I told him I understand but I also know that the clinic made money by selling medication so perhaps they can refund me part of the money. He refused and claim that the clinic earn nothing from selling medications. I asked him why so cold blooded since he knows just 3 days after I picked up the medication, my dog passed away. All the medications are still in the packages they gave to me. He repeated himself and the law. I was very upset so I asked how can the clinic not willing to refund $50 or $100 because the medication costs almost $600. He yelled back "Clearly this is about money, you want $50, I can give you $50". I answered him "No, I don't need $50, I am giving you an example because VCA surely can make the decision". He then yelled "if you don’t want $50, then you can bring the medication back here and we can destroy it. Actually, don’t bring it back here, bring it to a human pharmacy for them to destroy it”. When my dog was 8 weeks old, we visited VCA in another city. Even today, the original paperwork are still in the file. When the faith brought us to you for the specialist doctor, I told myself I am glad my baby is in a good hand. Today, I just want to let you know, all the doctors, nurses, and staff that helped us, I want to say thank you to you. As for your general manager Jason Kill, perhaps this is not the field for you. Yelling at your customer who just lost her pet few days ago; who is still on the process for the funeral and experience mental breakdown, your behaviour is really inappropriate. I thank other staff who helped us but I will not visit again.

Avoid bringing your vet there at all costs!!! I brought my dog there on Wednesday morning for an eye infection. Her eye was closed shut and had green infection running down her face. They made us pay $50 for her to be triaged and put a cone on her. They told us that we could go home and they would call us when it was our turn to go back. They said there was about 10 patients ahead of us. I called that evening to see where we were on the list and they were extremely ignorant and said there are other animals more critical and that they will call us by the morning to bring her in. I understand there are animals in more critical condition and expect to be waiting but there is no need to keep pushing my dog down the list like she doesnt matter. Now 48 hours later and they call me this morning to tell me that I'm going to have to wait longer and that I can bring her into another emergency vet. Are you kidding me now you tell me this after 48 hours and taking $50 from me ???. They are nothing but money hungry. They see animals that come in and are going to cost thousands of dollars so they push you down on the list. Its not about the money for me I would spend thousands on my animal if i needed too. The way my dog was treated is completely unacceptable!!! Even human hospitals don't treat you this way. I understand that lola emergency is closed but there is no way they couldnt have took my dog in and looked at her eye for 10 minutes within a 48 hour period..Overall they are extremely ignorant . There are a few nice ones there but the ones at the front desk definitely need customer service training. I now brought my animal to the Eagleson emergency and they took her in right away. They couldn't believe that my dog hasn't even been seen within 48 hours. All she needed was eye antibiotics which alta vista could've gave her. I will never bring my dog back here again and I suggest you do the same !!!

My lovely cat passed away. Spoke to the director of the clinic about how the charge extravagant prices . Questioned why I was not offered an ultrasound initially until the cat was almost dead and $3,400 later and was told that “normal practice” is to not offer an ultrasound initially because it is expensive… Let the pet parents decide. I ended up doing $750 of bloodwork + an ultrasound and the ultrasound ALONE would have given the information needed. They did not charge for the euthanasia but realistically I was overcharged $1,500-$2,000 as a result of their “practices”. Their practices are designed to extract as much money out of the pet parent/patient as possible. If not, you would have offered the ultrasound on the first appointment and let me choose, rather than watching my cat slowly die over 3-4 weeks. Dr. Called and started giving an update on the wrong cat, and then gave us verbal information that was not recorded in the cats file, so there was no record of the discussion/recommendations. Icing on the cake was a not-thoughtful, generic sympathy card sent by the vet who questioned if I could afford an ultrasound bc I initially turned down 1 of 2 blood tests offered… which turned out to NOT provide info on the issue. If they had any worries, they would have checked my files to see that I have spent more than $11,000 on life-saving care for my animals. Shameful clinic. Shameful vets. People are your business, and animals are the vehicle for you to earn $$$. You need to treat PEOPLE better. —————————— Have only had excellent experiences here over 10 years, however my current experience is awful. Over run staff, too busy for the capacity and it is the animals that end up suffering as a result. I honestly feel like I’ve been given the run around.

There’s never a good reason to visit the emergency department of VCA. But the folks here are amazing and make a very difficult time more bearable. Everyone radiates love for animals and I felt comfortable knowing my cat was in good hands. Having the ability to call and check in was great, I never was made to feel like I was being annoying by asking for updates. The updates calls from staff were also nice to have. I never once was left wondering what condition my cat was in or how he was doing. As our cat was in hospital for a few days we were invited to have a visit. Being able to visit part way through his stay made being away a lot easier. During our visit we were able to see just how special the bond is between the staff and their patients. The younger gentleman (who’s name I think starts with a G or a J I’m sorry!) who helped us get settled in with our visit was very sweet to our boy , and you can tell they grew a relationship for when he came to check in on our visit our cat was very excited to see him and did figure 8s through his legs. As expected for an emergency vet , the cost was higher than what you could expect at a regular vet. That being said, nothing felt unreasonable and it didn’t feel like they pushed for anything unnecessary. Thank you VCA, we hope we never have to see you again but we’re thankful you are there if we do.

Took my older cat before, and it cost thousands of dollars going back again and again for tests.. Tried to avoid such with my dog, as they'd already gotten my entire savings in the last 3 years, and the vet throws a hissy fit & accused me of trying to "practice medicine".. solely because I needed to know the costs of treatments she was recommending after saying, "I don't know exactly what it is without tests." When asked why she couldn't just do the tests she said, "to save you money".. as if it doesn't cost more to have to keep going back after shotgunning treatments doesn't work. This was after waiting almost 30 minutes past the appointment time to see the vet, (in a near empty clinic) and listening to staff chat about their personal lives for 20 minutes as if we weren't even there. It's the first time I've been treated like a poor person in a 5 star restaurant with the whole 'if you need to know the costs, you're too poor for us' attitude.. but if that's how they feel-- fine, I'll be taking my pets elsewhere from now on. I guess I shouldn't expect much from a business that illegally discriminates against potential employees who don't own cars.

This animal hospital manipulates the emotions of pet parents and dries them out of any money they have. They DO NOT care about your animals all they care about are the numbers in your bank account. I had an awful experience bringing my kitten in when he was vomiting (turns out it was a bad reaction to some food that they wouldn’t admit even at the end) but they got over $1500 out of me knowing i was a first time cat parent and seeing that i was in distress willing to pay anything. Aside from myself everyone I know has had a TERRIBLE experience here. They urge people to put down their recovering/healthy pets after they realize you don’t want to continue wasting your money with their treatments. They misdiagnose and work on people’s emotions taking them through highs and lows to get more money out of them. They are a heartless building, of course not every person working there but enough of them are. This location needs to be re-managed or shut down until they can be investigated for the way they treat people and their pets. We are not ATMS. We are people.

My dog saw Dr Jamieson. Brought my dog cause he had removed part of his fur off his tail and kept going at it. She only shaved a small portion and prescribed medication. The situation got worst and when it was out of hand I called the place and asked to speak to her she was not in and her schedule was fully booked. I asked to leave a message (at 11:00am) only got a call back at 7:50pm. Then I explained to her what happened and by the end of the conversation she was blaming me. She noted on file that he had scabs on his butt but did nothing about it. After seeing the second vet he mentioned that thank god i had brought him in cause he should have been shaved a lot more the first time and that the situation would have gotten even worst if I waited longer. I will NEVER bring my dog there again!! I have attached pictures of my dog. The first one is what he looked like when I brought him in to the Alta vista vet, then what Dr Jamieson did to him. The other pictures are what the second vet did and what SHOULD have been done first time he came in.

One star is saying a lot, we brought my dog in who was having very laboured breathing, an wasn’t eating for days and the guy who did our triage said it was just anxiety an unfortunately it’s common… I asked what they did an ultrasound of he an said the stomach.. I’m like ok did you listen to her heart or lungs an he said no she’s fine… we ended up back home waiting for a call from the vet (we went in on Saturday night) went home an Sunday my dog was not doing well so I called another animal hospital and they took us in right away an told us it was good we came in an started treatment right away .. my dog passed away Monday morning … Alta vista you should be ashamed of yourself making my dog suffer when she could have been an should have been treated. I will never forget this and will never recommend you to ANYONE!

Sam my Old English Sheepdog who is my Service Dog and working Sheepdog broke his leg Friday night on our way to Ottawa for the weekend. We got to the hospital about 10 pm from the time we pulled up and I walked in and said I think my dog broke his leg and the staff went into action. They were amazing getting 100 lb Sam out of the car and on to a stretcher. They got him into the back and got pain meds and made sure he was comfortable right away. Even though it was a crazy busy night they ensured that Sam wouldn't suffer while waiting. Poor guy had to be x-rayed, and cast out on during all this the staff ensured he was comfortable the whole time. They communicate with you the whole time on the status and the Vet Tech and Vet ensure that you understand what's going on. Would recommend Alta Vista to anyone.

  • Brigitte Sharp

From the people at the reception, the vet technicians and the vets, everybody is so nice and professional. It is so stressful to bring in a family pet with an emergency situation but you know that you are in very good hands when you are there. In August, I had to have euthanized my 4 year old cat with cancer and the whole procedure was so thoughtful and caring. Last week, I had to bring in my one year old cat who had swallowed a very long ribbon. My Charlotte had to go for surgery to have it removed from her stomach/small intestines. I really appreciated the time they took to explain everything to me and the phone calls from the vet after surgery. Once discharged, I received an email asking how Charlotte was doing. That was so wonderful and caring. Thank you for taking such good care of our fur babies.

I've never been treated like I was dispensable cash in my life until I brought my dog to their emergency centre- which I Already Had No Faith In- they then confused me into agreeing to euthanize my ALREADY DEAD pet only so they could charge me for it. within an hour an a half i had stepped into the building, given the news my pets' heart had stopped beating, manipulated into euthanizing my pet, then given the forms for the urn and cremation services. all under TWO HOURS. The lack of respect Bonnie and her coworker showed to my Father and I by interrupting our private conversations, refusing to give us the receipt or let us speak to the doctor, and calling us rude, was uncalled for and so disrespectful. I'm honestly disgusted with how they treat pets and owners in mourning.

  • Octo Pilion

Unfortunately i had to go here for the worst reason possible, i had gone to my regular vet for a check up for my dog and 8 new problems where found. He was at a point that he unfortunately was in pain 24/7 and i didn't want to have him keep suffering so we came here as my vet was full and couldn't euthanize my dog at that time. I have only gone through the process once before at another hospital and it was brutal. Here though they bring you to a private room and they give you as much time as you want with your pet. You can ugly cry and not have to worry about the other people in the hospital. I can't thank the people that work at that hospital enough for making the last day with my boy the most comfortable experiences possible. P.S. The treat table was a great decision.

  • Tamara MacDonald

The entire staff both front end and behind the scenes are amazing. They took such amazing care of my dog Niki. She needed emergency eye care and it was given in a timely fashion. The front end got us an appointment quickly and the initial vet Dr. Obourne saw her on a Friday got us all the necessary information and medications needed for the weekend until Niki could see the Opthalmologist. Dr. Tinsley saw her on Tuesday and explained exactly what was wrong and the different courses in treatment we could take. We decided on surgery for both eyes and she had it the very next day. They took amazing care of her, I'm beyond pleased with the services provided. I would recommend this clinic to everyone I know or anyone that asks.

I give 2 stars because they have free wifi, coffee and water. Went with my dog for a injury after a dog attack. Waited 2 hours (That I don’t care I understand its an emergency), they pass a dog that swallowed a button before us (really!!). Saw a technician, she barely touched my dog and sent us home because it was too busy. She never saw all the bites holes on my dog back. She said the vet will call me back. Never did. I went to another clinic, they shaved him and we discovered lots of holes, bruises and a swolllen shoulder. My dog was in pain and still his. The only little less negative point other the the free wifi is that at least they did not charge me anything (of course I never saw a vet!!)

  • Kylie Negus

I’ve unfortunately ended up at the emergency vet multiple times. The staff at Alta Vista are always so kind and compassionate, and have always gotten to the root cause of the problem. I had to bring my Golden Retriever in last Friday because she was acting very strange, couldn’t stand, and was twitching. I brought her in and they took her in immediately as priority and quickly told me that she was experiencing THC toxicity which was confirmed by a drug test. This was completely shocking to me as I don’t have any weed. She found it during our afternoon walk. The staff were all so kind, kept me up to date and took care of my girl. She is good as new and I’m so thankful.

  • Tim M

Super hard working staff, kind and professional. However, I have the impression that this clinic is really meant for animals that are severely sick or dying. My dog got bit in the face, waited 5.5 hours to be told around 11:30 pm they wanted to sedate him, but they couldn’t, so go home and they would call me later the next day when they could do it. I wish there had been more communication telling me that sedation would not be possible at a certain point in the evening. I was aware that sedation may be necessary right from the start! Anyway, I left and was treated at a different emergency clinic in Kanata around 1am.

  • Meghan Hayes

Not even worth one star. Because we wouldn't pay for blood work we already had done the week before, they left us sitting in a room for hours. When asked what was going on, we were told we had been bumped to the back of the line. We started to leave, they told us to "hang tight ". Stayed in the waiting room another hour +, finally said our elderly dog is so uncomfortable here it's making everything worse and left. Had to pay $50 for the pleasure of having my dog lie on dirty floor for hours. Do not recommend for emergencies. Steer clear and find somewhere else.

  • Allie Melin

Had to take my 13 year old pup into emerg, and the clinic tried very hard to help with her seizures. But her inoperable tumour (liver cancer) left little choices. They didn’t pressure us, gave us many options and made sure Roxy wasn’t suffering. When it was clear palliative care wasn’t working (her seizures were still getting worse) - they explained it well and allowed us all the time we needed. Wonderful veterinary care. She passed on, because there was no treatment left to do, but we got to spend a lot of quality time with her - they truly care. Thank you

  • Patti May

This emergency animal hospital is such a wonderful place. Dr Harrison was so kind and compassionate with our Westie Bunny who was suffering from advanced Westie lung disease and in respiratory distress. With broken hearts we sadly had to let Bunny go. Dr Harrison was kind, gentle and spoke to us with comforting words that made us feel calm and peaceful during our painful time saying bye to our sweet girl. We will be forever grateful to Dr Harrison for your kindness toward Bunny and to us. Thank you Patti and John May

The Alta Vista animal hospital has been at this location for decades providing excellent care for pets. The veterinarians and staff are friendly and seem to love their jobs and the animals they care for. What I find special is that they also treat pet owners with empathy and respect. Often providing better care than what you will find from your family physician. I highly recommend you come to the Alta Vista animal hospital for you pets needs. I have great confidence in Dr. Tinsley and his ability to diagnose eye problems. It has been 10 years since I last needed his services. He is still the same kind knowledgeable Doctor that I remembered and is still supported by an excellent team! Fortunately my Miniature Schnauzer has no problems with her eyes other than advancing age! The reception on entering the facility was friendly and helpful and quite frankly I have absolutely nothing negative to say about Alta Vista Animal Hospital.

  • Christina Motta

Best animal hospital in Ottawa hands down. They found my dog had a rare heart condition - literally saved my dog from cardiac arrest and updated me often while I was hysterical. Other hospital, I kid you not, said he had stomach issues and to come back if he's vomiting or has diarrhea. Glad I didn't listen and brought him to Alta Vista Emergency. Also they have direct billing with Trupanion, I highly recommend too. Saved THOUSANDS!

  • Andree Gosselin

We have taken our pets to the Alta Vista Animal Hospital for many years and have always had wonderful service. This was no exception, our visit for first checkup and vaccines of our two kittens went very well. Dr. O'Byrne and her assistant were very helpful and professional, providing useful information and services. I have recommended Alta Vista Animal Hospital to family and friends before and will continue to do so. Thank you!

  • Mirjam Tanguay

Dr McIsaac saved our cat’s tail. Very happy with the veterinary service July 2023. Unfortunately the staff forgot to check us in. Someone took our cat to the back but he wasn’t formally checked in so was just waiting there without being seen. We ended up waiting much longer than we needed to. Will not give them a low rating because of this since he did get the pain meds he needed while waiting and the vet was very very good.

  • Madisen Covell

My kitten got spayed a few days ago at another clinic and experienced some complications. I took her to Alta Vista Emergency Clinic and was relieved with the service that we received. Being a paranoid pet parent is not easy therefor I was quite shaken up, the staff were comforting and able to provide me with the most care that I have ever received. I would recommend Alta Vista to anyone

  • Jon Hansen

We brought our dog Daisy into emergency because she had developed a bad rash. The staff was amazing - courteous, responsive, and ultimately nailed the diagnosis prescribing not only the right meds, but the right food to use to limit an allergic reaction. I only wish that some "human" emergency rooms operated as efficiently and caring. But that is a discussion for another day and venue.

  • Sarah Fredericks

The staff here are amazing! Dr. Yaychuk provided exceptional service and helped out our Daisy greatly. He also explained things in a way that we could understand and decide on the appropriate option. While there, we witnessed some rude phone calls to the front desk staff. It was not their fault and I just want to send a shout out to them for all they do and have to endure!

  • Lauri Cox

The kindest and most patient vets, techs and support staff I have every witnessed. I am a nurse, I know triage is not easy and people can be impatient when emotions run high. Your front desk staff where exceptional - always even toned and had patience with every single person. The doctor I saw sat down to explain everything and was fantastic! Thank you and Kudos to all!

  • Michael Shoesmith

Thank you so much to the incredible staff at Alta vista animal hospital. We couldn’t have asked for better care for our dog Archie. From the customer service (Godfrey), to the vets Dr Parsons and Dr Davenport, ICU techs and patient managers the compassion showed by the whole team made a world of difference. A wholehearted thanks from us to the whole team ❤️

  • Jessica Lackey

Our senior dog was seen by Dr. Tobin last Thursday and we unfortunately had to make the decision to let him go. Dr. Tobin and her team was absolutely incredible. The kindness and compassion they gave us and our fur baby Blitz, was truly amazing. We would recommend the Alta Vista Animal hospital to anyone. We truly can’t thank you all enough.

  • Paula D. N.

WORST HOSPITAL ON EARTH! My 14-year-old poodle was left agonizing in a cage for 16 hours and no vet ever saw her! They are monsters. I ended up moving her to Eagleson and, due to the condition she was in, the vet saw her right away. This place, its total lack of compassion and respect, insane prices, it all makes me sick to my stomach.

  • Ellie Davis

I went in with my dog, Roxy, who was diagnosed with IMT (ITP). The entire staff at VCA Canada AltaVista Animal Emergency took excellent care of my girl. They kept me in the loop on her condition and any news about her. I phoned to check a few times and they always answered my questions and were kind, compassionate, and very helpful.

  • Logan Latourell

We just got home from taking our dog to Alta Vista due to a reaction he got from vaccines that were administered earlier on in the day. Every single staff member was fantastic. There’s no shortage of kindness, compassion, and humour in the staff here. They made the experience 100 times easier. Very happy with the customer service!

  • Sarah Depont

Great people here. I brought in my 8 month old puppy to have her eyes looked it. It was a long wait(we werent super emergent, and there was ALOT of animals seen that day), but people were understanding of my puppies needs. Once we were seen by the vet it went very fast, everything I asked and explained was listened to.

  • gale lynn

When no one else would take my new mom and pup Alta Vista was there for us! Other places said 24hour care, but no one was there! We were told by Alta Vista bring her right in….they were professional and compassionate and made us feel safe. Did it cost more then other places, how would I know NO ONE would see us!

  • Grace Cromb

Everyone here is so nice and compassionate. I brought my Bernese Mountain Dog in last night for GDV and they took amazing care of him. They sent us home with a lot of information and even contacted another clinic so I can set up surgery there in the future. Orbie and I thank you all so much!!

  • Sylvie Bourdeau

Excellent health care. My Yorkie couldn't breath. They were at full capacity but took him immediately. Very Caring personnel. They sent me home to sleep a few hours, while my dog was stable & didn't charge me for the extra stay. Prices very reasonable as compared to other Ottawa vet clinics.

  • Stasia Chiasson

Excellent care!! Everyone was so professional and considerate. We had a serious case of pneumonia and they took our dog in quickly and allowed us to call through the night. Estimates were given and every test they would have us authorize. They always consider the best course of action.

  • Chelsea Guindon

I recently brought my dog here because of a dog bite and all the staff was great and understanding! It was a long wait because they were over capacity, and they are one of the only emergency vets open on a weekend. I hope more emergency vets open in the city to help relieve the staff.

  • Giovanni Di Marco

My dog had a mouthful of porcupine quills when I came in. The staff were great about getting him in and giving him some pain management fast. Took a while to get everything done, but they took great care of my dog. While I hope to not need their ER again, I'll gladly go back if I do.

  • Brianne Gagnon

I appreciate how nice and caring the staff is. The wait time is fairly long but understandable considering other pets need immediate help. They call and follow up often which is something I have never experienced. Can tell they do it for the pets and not the money.

  • Mike Green

The staff was excellent from the point my family and I entered till our departure. We had our first experience when we had to euthanize our family dog. They were very accommodating and comforting. Very happy they were the vet that helped us through the tough time.

  • Travis Smith

We’ve been taking our dog here for years. Very convenient to have the emergency department and regular vet together, along with the depth of other services they provide. Was quite disappointed though when they shut down their physiotherapy unit with a hydro tank.

  • Kaitlyn Pashko

We had a fantastic experience here. The staff were very friendly and helpful. They always kept us up to date and told us the cost of things upfront. When our dog had to stay overnight they even sent us a picture of him and an update! We would come here again.

we were at the hospital in Ottawa because nothing was open where we live. The hospital is open 24/7 which is great. Staff was nice and very understanding. Vets also explained everything to us and now our dog is in great shape. Thanks Alta Vista...
