We visited Wygston House for the first time on Valentine's Day. Firstly and by far the most important thing to say is the food was superb. Although a relatively restricted menu there was a good range of dishes and everything we has was fresh, full of flavour and very well cooked. The chef certainly did a great job and deserves complementing. The second thing I'd say is the building is magnificent. Possibly the downstairs bar is a little cold, in both senses but, the upstairs dinning room is spectacular. A great venue. Thirdly however, a couple of constructive criticisms. If I'm paying £45.00 per head I don't expect paper napkins of the standard you'd get in a fast food joint. Also, I've read the previous reviews that comment on staff training. I have to say I don't expect to be handed a bottle of very warm rose wine with the top still on it with a shrug and the words "should I be pouring this out?" and then have to ask twice to get an ice bucket. Maybe an old style maitre d might sharpen up the act and even get the staff to smarten-up their appearance and skills. As I said the food was really special so why spoil it with such small things that are easily fixed. Do that and next time I'll give you 5 stars and maybe next year you'll be full on Valentine's Day.

Review is for the vegetarian Sunday roast. First the positives: great attentive service; good value wine; fantastic roast potatoes, gravy, and Yorkshire pudding; well-cooked veg; lovely dessert (I had the Chocolate Orange tart); generous portions. 5 stars for all these. The cauliflower cheese was disappointing. It barely had any cheese on it, and if there was a sauce it was so watery that any flavour was lost. 2 stars only. Sadly the meal was let down badly in two areas. The stuffing ball simply wasn’t cooked enough and was a warm, wet, herby mush of breadcrumbs inside. To their credit an attempt was made to bring us more (they arrived just as we were finishing our meal). They’d been deep fried and had a delicious crunchy outer layer, but sadly still very soggy inside. My main criticism is reserved for the vegetable Wellington. It was bland and uninspired and as far as I could tell was basically overcooked potato and carrot in a soggy pastry. Please replace with a protein such as seitan or a nut roast. I’ll keep an eye on the menu and if a new vegetarian main is available I’ll happily return as there was a lot to enjoy here.

Wanted a Sunday lunch and this did not disappoint! We popped in earlier in the day to book and they asked us to pre order so we weren't disappointed if anything sold out which we did. When we returned we had a drink in the bar before being taken upstairs to the restaurant which was lovely - beamed ceilings and pretty fairy lights. Food was amazing. Service and presentation fantastic. We'd ordered a belly pork roast and an 'all the meats' roast, which was a full serving of each meat option! Both came with red cabbage, roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese, carrots, green beans, Yorkshire pudding, stuffing, a pig in blanket and a boat of gravy each! The only slight disappointment was I'd wanted pudding, but there was no way I could manage it sadly! Definitely recommend for a special Sunday lunch - food was great, venue lovely and staff friendly, polite and welcoming.

A fantastic attribute to the city centre of Leicester, the building is historically beautiful with a large outdoor sunny seating area to enjoy a pint or two overlooking Jubilee square. Unfortunately adding food (lunch) to this was a regrettable mistake. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich which was ok (4/10) my partner had the chicken, both on tiger bread, mine was fine my partners was shockingly stale, we also ordered a bucket of chicken wings and they were quite possibly the worst chicken wings I’d ever tasted, in fact they were that bad I complained, I was offered a refund on both the sandwich and wings but was quite happy just to have them re done as we were very hungry( hence a large lunch order). On a second attempt the wings were even worse, I didn’t want to make a second complaint so forced a few hard extremely crispy wings down and left disappointed. Quite nice old vibe. It's one of the more expensive pubs in town. Disappointing real ale selection with only 2 hand pumps and no 'real' cider. Ordered the chicken bacon caesar salad, perfectly tasty but technically not a caesar salad as it contains cucumber, radish, red pepper, rocket and tomatoes (I usually order a caesar salad as I don't like several of these things so it saves having to ask for them to be removed or picking them out) and at £10 it's not a cheap salad (more expensive than a burger) on the subject of burgers these do not come with fries which have to brought separately at an additional £2.95. Very helpful with a celiac guest, chef came out to help guide what they could and couldn't do, but veggie selection very limited (one sandwich and one burger only) which disappointed a vegetarian friend. Overall I would visit again but guests with dietary limitations may be disappointed.

Me and my partner, were coming here at least once a month for a steak, for the last 2 years, as they were amazing, however, last recent visit wasn’t the best experience! Ordered pineapple juice and ordered medium-rare steak. While we were waiting, pineapple juice they gave me was out of date! Not a big deal, got another one, then steak arrive….. The colour of the steak was as if it was old/boiled, just grey and well done rather than medium rear. Took a bite and had a funny taste. Wanted them to cook another one but was told they don’t have them and the one I already have is fresh and it was my opinion!!! Took a refund and left. See the photo for your self. Will think twice now before I will order food there again. Attached two photos from before, how steak looked like and now. (Now is the one in grey)

Leicester isn't the nicest place in the world but this pub managed to take you away from all that, we sat outside, lovely enclosure and green space. The food was sublime, a little bit pricey but the quality is worth it, the sauces come in a funny bucket and the staff are wonderful. The burger seen here was amazing, juicy, the salad balanced it well, a side order of chips went a long way with it, the pasta was nice, a light sauce that was fragrant and fresh. The Haloumi Fries... This must be the only place where Haloumi Fries haven't suffered due to the cost of living, £6 for 5 large Haloumi Fries and chilli jam, brilliant! This place might give us a reason to come.back to Leicester!

My first meal out since before lockdown. Wygston House had been highly recommended by several friends. We had booked a table for two for lunch. On arrival I said to one of the staff we had a table booked for two, she didn't ask for the name of booking. Just took us inside and said you can sit there (and pointed to a high table with stools near the bar) then she said or in there (and pointed to a door) we choose the "door" option. We both ordered the buttermilk chicken burger and triple cooked chips. When our food came out the chicken burger was black. I took the burger out of the bun to take a better look at the burger. It was black and crusty. It resembled a piece of charcoal. Our triple cooked fries were hollow. Our whole meal was inedible. So disappointed with our whole experience of wygston House.

First time there and liked it. Good atmosphere, good music, fast service and nice location. Will come back. Have been back many times, on Saturday we booked a table in one of the snug rooms. Our waitress was excellent, dealing with challenges efficiently and cheerfully. Some dishes were better than others - burgers would get 5* chicken parmigiana 3-4*. Love the atmosphere, the drinks are good. A favourite of mine in Leicester!

The layout is not very wheelchair friendly being an ancient building. The garden is very accessible though, in summer.

I really like this pub. Interesting building with plenty of seating areas outside and in. Staff are fab and friendly. We have eaten here a few times and has been great service every time. The food is fab! Tried the burger on my last visit and we were both surprised how bloody lovely it was. Full marks for presentation too! The desserts! Great location too, especially when there's a band on in the square. Really relaxed pub. Love it!

Decent place but needs work. Downstairs bar service was incredibly slow. They had 3 people on and still took forever to make a very simple order. Restaurant staff were really friendly. Starter was good but don't get the gnocchi main. There's an incredibly funky tasting minty oil doused over the whole thing which dominates the flavour and destroys it completely, and isn't mentioned on the menu. Also for a place that is trying really hard to be fancy, you'd think they could invest in a card machine upstairs, because if you're paying on card you have to go back to the incredibly slow bar downstairs and wait to be served, just to pay your bill!

We came in here yesterday for food after performing at the Comedy Festival. Every member of staff I spoke to was lovely. Friendly, helpful and everyone gave off a very rare impression of being happy to be there. The menu was extensive and varied. Prices were competitive and the cocktails (two for one) were special. All the food was excellent and generous. It felt like a very friendly and comfortable pub. Unfortunately the two tables closest to us were full of people with no volume control but I have no hesitation in thoroughly recommending this charming old pub.

First visit here and very impressed. Staff very helpful and knowledgeable. Due to the age of the building, the floors aren't all level but wheelchair users shouldn't have a problem. Lots of outdoor seating, some in the very attractive courtyard and many tables on a grassed area adjacent. Varied menu with good descriptions. My husband declared his burger was one of the best he'd had in a long time. They weren't stingy with the smoked salmon in my sandwich either. Highly recommended and we will definitely return

We were guests at the Gurr Davies wedding reception. The restaurant was warm, inviting and very friendly. The good served for the reception was well presented, beautifully cooked and very tasty which is no mean accomplishment for large number catering. The menu consisted of classic winter cuisine with variations for veggie and vegan. An all round perfect dining experience, the quality of which was enjoyed and commented upon by the whole group. Well done Wygston’s House.

Our go to place for food the service is always second to none thanks for all the great service! Seems to have the same staff there every time we go and they do an amazing job so thanks guys! Food is incredible you wouldn’t think you are eating at a pub it’s that good! Fires and log burners on in the winter and separate small rooms make it a very cosy place to go! Plenty of outdoor seating in the summer! Also plenty of good quality drinks on tap! Keep up the good work guys

Service was really good, friendly and fast. We came here for a Sunday roast and their portions are very big. I ordered the three roast meal (chicken, pork belly and sirloin strips) along with all the trimmings. I expected to only be served a little of each meat, but I think I actually received the same sized portion of meat as someone who ordered just the chicken for example. I couldn't finish all my mains, so they offered me a container to take some home, which was nice of them. And they accommodated a few changes we asked to our desserts, which was really kind of them.

  • S Carpenter

Very old building, partly Tudor and partly Georgian I think. No information about the history of the place on their website unfortunately. We ordered Gammon and chips and Cod and chips. The Gammon was well received but my Cod and chips wasn't too good, fish wasn't very fresh, batter not very nice, chips not very appetising, disappointing. Toilet had a broken soap bottle, so no soap, and an empty bottle of hand sanitiser, not good either. Nice roaring fire however on a very cold day. Not for me I'm afraid.

Sunday lunch menu was a disappointmen!Basically only two main dishes. The only good thing, the interior! Also, towards the end,I felt extremely unwell, obviously looking like I required help and possibly even more and not only nobody came to ask if we needed anything, but to my huge disappointment, when I felt a bit better and was about to go the waitress that passed by us to get to the other table, she quickly asked if I was OK with a subtle smirk or something like that!Food and waiting staff used to be a lot to the highest standards..not anymore..shame

  • Dani

Had the crispy chicken burger, have to order fries separately as a side. It was really delicious. The music and vibe outdoors is really lovely, especially on a sunny day! Really enjoyed it, was relaxing, no rushing. Only thing is, it was a bit confusing knowing how ordering/seating works. No one was outside or at the front to advise us. I'd booked in advance, but even then, just found a table ourselves, didn't realise we had to go to the bar to order, or that we needed to note the number of our table. Besides that all was great!

  • Peter Bedford

Recently visited here on a Sunday afternoon. The food menu was the Christmas Specials. It was great to have the choice of 'Christmas tapas' style dishes on the light bites menu. The price was fair and the quality of the food very good. The staff were friendlt and attentive, and the general atmosphere and vibe of the bar excellent. Undoubtedly one of the cosiest bars in Leicester City Centre.

We have visited this lovely pub many times The building is stunning both inside and out, the staff are always friendly and the owner always makes us feel very welcome. Added to that, the music is to our liking and most importantly a perfect pint of Guinness! On this occasion we opted for medium rare steaks which were cooked to perfection, served with chips and a well dressed salad. Complemented with a bottle of red wine and a Guinness of course made for another lovely afternoon in this pub. A must place to visit!

  • Hywel Maslen

Lovely building to be in. Had sunday lunch. Staff were great. Food overall was reasonably good although our party sent one mushroom starter back and they forgot items in my order. Mussels were slightly gritty and some cracked. Carrots not properly cleaned. Gravy was bang average however and disappointing. There was plenty though. These are things any chef ought to get proper sorted given Sunday lunch is a key part of their service. Improvements needed for sure but it is a fairly good.

Lovely pub, close to DM University, great decior, ooen fires and the staff are welcoming and warm. We had three meals, fish and chips and mushy peas which my wife said was one the best she had in a long time. My meduim rare sirloin was cooked perfectly, and the hot spicy chicken wings were a beaut. Dog friendly and prices were good too, three beersand three meals with sude, just over 70 quid, so overall, very happy with our visit, id always head here now when in Leicester.

  • Kate Callier

Quite a disappointment. Lovely girl taking orders but was very slow waiting even for the soft drinks. 4 of us ordered, 2 X Fish&chips, chicken burger, Pulled pork burger & halloumi chips. The chips were really overcooked but cold, a big step beyond crispy, just hard, not nice at all. The chicken in the chicken burger was not good had to pick it apart to find edible bits between the fatty squishy bits. Salad wasn't fresh. Pulled pork burger was ok. Won't be returning.

  • Glenys Bennett-Lloyd

A truly wonderful place to meet. Log fire! (How often do you find that in the City Centre - well maybe it can be done). This place is just fab. Why? Relaxing environment, caring staff, a very well run venue, historic. We found it very Covid aware and we felt safe. Menu is a lot more than OK and fairly comprehensive, the food is good. We have our Christmas Day arranged but if we hadn't I think this may well be a good place to be. Do not lose this venue Leicester!

Enjoyed a lovely mother's birthday lunch with my daughter, granddaughter and two great granddaughters aged 2 and 3 yesterday. The food was plentiful, well cooked, with a good variety of vegetables. Nothing was to much trouble for the attentive friendly staff. We were offered a complimentary drink on arrival as it was mothers day, which was a lovely gesture. I would certainly recommend this place and will definitely come here again, to this unique old building.

  • WhosPhoto

Nice place to enjoy good beer in a clean friendly atmosphere, the staff are very helpful chatty and friendly, just what you want whilst enjoy a social moment. Try the food, looks good. Outside sitting is good to take in the new improved square, all down to King Richard IIIs popularity. At this time of writing 2022 the cathedral is closed for much needed improvements so check. Other interesting places will take up a good day out in a city full of interests.

Another fabulous Sunday lunch. Festive menu is onat the moment. To start we had the baked brie and salmon pate, delicious! For mainsHubby and myself had beef brisket with creamy mash and all the trimmings. Our son had the porchetta again with all the trimmings. Too full for a pud. Set prices for 1, 2 or 3 courses. Good value for money and lovely staff! Can't seem to add any photos which is a shame.

Well presented pub within Leicester city centre, an old building with lots of interesting features, I especially like the room the the wood burning fire and tall backed seats. Choice of British and Belgium ales for the beer drinkers and the usual selection of wines and spirits. The staff knew their job so no waiting to get served, prices in keeping with the location and environment. Worth a visit.

We had Sunday lunch here, the service is great and the food amazing. I had all the meats and every item was cooked to perfection. Fantastic quality Sunday roast in this lovely rustic building, quickly becoming the weekly favourite! I highly recommend the pork belly, moist and crispy to perfection and every accompaniment just as nicely prepared, from the Chantenay carrots to the red cabbage and Yorkshire pudding, and of course homemade gravy. All credits to head chef Stephan who does a wonderful job!

  • Carol Barker

The food was of average quality and only just warm enough. I think that the price of £23 for a 2 course Xmas meal was too high for the quality of the meal. Service was fairly slow. The building exterior and interior are both beautiful hence 3 stars instead of 2. I might come back for a coffee but would not bother with a meal and would much prefer to eat at 1573.

This is a great place to spend a summer's day. It's also a nice chilled place on an evening, where it never seems too busy. Probably has the best beer garden in town - it's huge. You won't find a more historic venue to drink in Leicester, it's situated in a very quaint old wooden building with warped beams and wattle and daub walls (so I'm guessing).

Went for my bday june 5th. Had the mushrooms on toast starter. Unreal. Had the 3 meat Sunday roast. Unreal. Had the apple and cinnamon crumble with requested cold custard. UNREAL. . Worth visiting alone for being Leicester's oldest building. On top of that has a real cosy atmosphere and good drinks at a reasonable price. I haven't tried the food yet, but hopefully next time.

Very disappointed, half the menu wasn't available. Didn't eat my mussels main course. Staff really friendly, would probably go back for a drink, definitely not food! Lovely old building.

Right in the centre of Leicester with a great selection of good beer and charming staff, this bar is a comfortable environment to spend some time and is dog friendly. Interesting building too. We aren't in Leicester often but this is where we go when we are.

That place is amazing! Combining the historical interior with the modern attitude towards the customers. The food and the bear are simply delicious. I loved the atmosphere there.

First time visiting, probably won't be the last. We didn't have meals but chips were lovely. Good range of drinks on offer and an enjoyable atmosphere, even when it became busier throughout the evening. Also a nice venue for playing a murder mystery game!

  • Kev Merrall

I have been told this is the oldest building in leicester, and it oozes character. Never had food here, so can't review that, but the atmosphere, decor, staff and beer are first class. They have a lovely log burner in one of the rooms too, great place.

This is a lovely place to have a drink. Staff were super friendly, they had real ale (hard to find at this moment in time) and the venue is beautiful. Wish we had started our night here. Looking forward to coming back and sitting in the sun.

Took my family and my dad here on Father's Day 2018. Fairly disappointed with the food generally, however was completely appalled at the food they served to my 6 year old daughter. Like some kids she went for the chicken goujons and chips

Great place to eat and drink set inside one of the oldest buildings in the city centre. Close to the cathedral, King Richard exhibition, Jewry Wall, Castle Gardens and Highcross shopping area Excellent service as well Highly recommended

Was served rotting salad with my sandwich, which i ate unwittingly. Told the waitress and didn't even receive an apology. Food overpriced for what you get anyway. Good for drinks but would recommend stearing clear of their pub "food".

Best roast in Leicester. Kim who looked after our table was lovely, friendly and kept us up to speed on timings etc. Beautiful setting and great value on the Sunday roast menu.

Discovered this place on a day trip to Leicester recently. Perfect cosy rooms with fires, a very old pub, just my kind of place. Highly recommended the mulled wine and hot cider.

Service is fast, attentive & friendly & can't beat the outdoor area to have a drink in the afternoon sun. The cocktails I've tried have been good and the guinness is decent too. Beautiful old building, win all around.

  • B&J Hatburg

Bar service was quick and friendly. Nice food, very large group so food was slow. Forgot my colleagues cheese course and didn't bring it until we'd all finished our desserts. Packed up another dessert to take home.

Quirky, olde worlde pub with lovely interior and huge beer garden - great happy hour drinks offers...especially 2 4 1 cocktails.

We turned up for our 6:30pm booking which was made over a week prior. We had also went in to confirm our booking 4 days ago. Only to find out that they were closed due to licensing issues.

  • Jordan D

Really friendly staff had us seated and served after a short wait in the queue! Drinks were great and the food was amazing. Highly recommend anyone to visit this beautiful pub/restaurant !

Situated on the left side of the cathedral. I visited yesterday evening to have a meal. Staff was very courteous and kind. Food was lovely, especially the burgers. I highly recommend it.

Stumbled across Wygstons House while looking for the street art festival, but what a great surprise. Great pub, great beer and even decent value pub food. Now go back every time we can.
