Pro: good presentation of food, which was reasonable quality. I would give it about 3.5!5 based on what we thought it could be. Con: little engagement due to phone-based ordering, lack of variety of fish, odd choice of dishes that didn’t inspire interest…. Not great value. This had the promise of being a great Japanese restaurant in the SE of Melbourne, and to be honest the food is quite good, and well presented. However, there are few things that stops this being memorable (for the right reasons). Firstly if you haven’t been here before, don’t believe their website photos (they are excellent at providing a very misleading impression that this is classier than it is). Our experience was sitting out (on a warm March night) outside being dripped on by an overhead sign. We moved tables 3 times (admittedly they were v accommodating). The thing that feels most jarring is the dependence on using your phone to effectively order online from your table… which means you are encouraged to constantly grab your phone - which in my book is a culinary sin. It would be better to have their own device, but perhaps this is Covid thing, or just cost saving. Also, it means you are asked to provide phone/email details to eat there - and unless you want to provide their website with a record of your credit card, you have to enter your credit card every single time you order something…also, they have staff walking up and down - but they aren’t waiters - they just serve food (thanks to the phone based service). The food is good - but this is also why it gets 3 stars. For a seafood-based restaurant, it’s amazing to me that they essentially just provide either salmon or kingfish (the latter being not the tastiest of fish) for most of their sushi/sashimi. The platter which should be their signature dish was competent, but quite unsatisfying… the problem we had was that after the platter, there was nothing on their menu that enticed us - or even intrigued us to try. The drink choice was also poor - my wife had to make do with a bottled lemon-lime-bitters… and very few alcoholic options (if you don’t like Asahi beers) In the end, as a PAYG restaurant we just left -leaving us feeling like we were doing takeaway at someone else’s house (while they weren’t home). Maybe this is a post-Covid concept to reduce interaction with people, but it left us feeling like we should have ordered to go.

An absolute favourite of ours now and will keep coming back as often as we can. The food is simply incredible. Narrowing down the choices is proving impossible so I recommend ordering everything. A couple of favourites are the Donburi and Okonomiyaki - don't miss! Excellent vegetarian options too and all so beautifully presented. The staff were friendly and the service was superb. We love the atmosphere in there and have now ranged from table sitting with a group to sitting up at the bar and loved both. Cannot recommend this place enough.

onight I dined at Y14 and I simply couldn’t help myself but to leave a review. The food was absolutely outstanding! All the food was so fresh and traditional! My personal favourite was the Spicy Tuna Sushi Roll, it was to die for! The service at Y14 has never let me down, they are so fast and efficient, and deliver with so much care. I would also like to make a special mention to our waitress tonight, she told us her name was Amelia. She was so kind and caring and had a very extensive knowledge of all the food we ordered and gave us great recommendations! I hope to see her at our next visit! Overall, exceptional food, outstanding service and a beautiful dining experience! Thankyou Y14, perfect dining experience for a balmy Melbourne night!

I dont usually write reviews but after this evenings dining experience i felt compelled to do so. This place has been a favourite of mine & my partner for a few years now however after the last couple of times we have noticed a large decline in quality of food & service. Tonight in particular has taken the cake. We received raw pork dumpling which we left for the waitress to see however she took the plate away without any form of acknowledgement. The food quailty is not what it used to be. The service has gone down hill mainly due to the young staff with lack of customer service skills. Its quite disappointing that we will now have to find a new regular Japenese restaurant to go to.

The meal started with gyozas that tasted like they had just been defrosted from a packet you would find at coles. It was followed by the sweet taste of dish soap in my water and a waitress who was happy to be anywhere but there. Right after my partner and I received our teriyaki chicken and teriyaki kingfish donburi. I can quite easily say the only flavour in both bowls was the soy sauce that had drowned the rice and turned it into a sloppy mess. The bokchoy was overcooked, my fish didn't even taste like it was seasoned with salt and pepper. The chicken was bland and dry. All this coupled with the price point, I'd be happier going to a food court and ordering the end of day special at the Thai place that has been struggling to stay open.

  • Damian Moscatt

Terrible. Absolutely. Terrible. We ordered the chicken chilli dumplings, which were served almost cold, warm at best. The panko crumbed chicken curry don Buri came with 4 pieces of pickled ginger, no veggies and the chicken was the thickness of a slice of ham. My partner had the tofu curry don Buri which was too spicy, rice over cooked (possibly sushi rice used) tofu was slimy and 1 piece of carrot. All for the small price of $59.00 no drinks included. The tables so close together I could not sit opposite my partner instead forced to stare at the corner of the room. This place is an absolute rip off. I could understand if the flavours were amazing or everything was fresh. But our experience was far from that.

  • Mark Hulme

We were newcomers to the MrYum on line ordering and struggled with it. Our waitress did help but when we had trouble a second time I told her of my frustration with the system. By a misunderstanding I have to suppose the supervisor came to our table and asked “is it alright to have a go at the staff?” in a very blunt fashion. I explained I had neither criticised the waiter nor the restaurant. The waitress confirmed my story. We wondered whether to leave, seeing as the supervisor offered no apology. The service was generally lacking warmth. Quick to clear the table, but no conversation or enquire about how we were enjoying the meal. Will go back to Ichi Ni next time which never fails.

Have wanted to try Y14 for a while - especially seeing all the great pics on Instagram during lockdown when they were only open for takeaway. Food was fab, service was good - the only thing that was a little tricky was that you had to order and pay for your food through your smartphone, which is a little tricky if you don't have your card attached to your phone (which I didn't but hubby did) . I would recommend the option of having a hard copy menu (upon request) as well as the items on the phone were a little hard to see which actually meant we ordered the wrong thing. So heads up - you do have to be a little tech savvy to eat here - but well worth it as the food was great!

Stumped upon this cute Japanese restaurant in Sandringham, and I'm glad I did. The food was overall super fresh and tasty, I definitely recommend the mixed sushi roll plate, the Japanese pancakes and the soba sallad. Yummy! The vibe was lovely too, every table was taken outside and busy indoors too so had a good vibe too it The only fallbacks I'd call out is that everything is done via QR code which loses the personal touch and service, especially when it's not a fast food, cheaper option I want a bit more service. The second thing was the beer, 300ml for I think almost $14 and it wasn't even filled up properly Even though, I will return!

  • Vicky Davey

What a Shame :-( We have been to Y14 about 6 times over the past 2 years.... The food is still good BUT we all loathed the new ordering system using your phone. It lacks the personal touch of eating out in a restaurant. I'm not sure why they have chosen to go down this path for its customers. This place is usually busy with clients and we were expecting to wait for a table as you can't book... but it was only half full..... Maybe the ordering system isn't going down in this part of town?? This ordering system works great in hotels & bars....BUT not restaurants See You Later Guys we wont be back.... Back to Kicho we Go !

  • David Barnes

An amazing night out. Everything from the location, the vibe inside, the service to the food was exceptional. I have had their food a couple of times now, and two of my favourites is the Wagyu Tataki and the Double Wagyu Beef Inside Out Roll, but all of the food was scrumptious. Forgot to mention, also loved the Kingfish Carpaccio. I definitely recommend going

Fairly average overall, unlikely to return. The teriyaki chicken was a generic brown sauce, slightly congealed, with rubbery chicken. Chilli chicken gyoza were nice but nothing special. Ordering online is easy, however customer service is then minimal, food dropped on the table in random order, with no interaction. If you just want a quick meal, this might be for you. If you're looking for a nicer dining experience, this is not it. Expensive for what it is, had better at many cheaper/basic places.

9/10 times the quality is impeccable. Very efficient service without lacking friendliness. Slightly overpriced but we are always happy to pay as we love the menu! A little frustrating that you can only order through a QR code which disadvantages people who don’t have ability to use a smart phone or online payment and don’t accept cash. I guess they are targeting a specific demographic. We still love this place and visit at least once a month because it’s so delicious.

Dined here tonight after having it on my "to go" list for ages, and it has become my new benchmark for Japanese restaurants. The menu is refined, and excellently presented. The quality of the "raw" items is top notch. The oysters very fresh, but the salmon sashimi plate was the highlight of the night. Salmon presented 5 different ways was amazing. Didn't get a chance to try their cocktails but they also looked great, with a strong Japanese influence. The service was also fantastic. We will definitely be back, very soon.

  • Lisa Bursill

Ombloodygod! YUMMM! Taste sensation on every dish so beautifully presented but booming with individual flavours and something for everyone! If you’re not keen of tofu, TRY IT HERE! If you’re not a fan of sashimi, TRY IT HERE! Soooo good and I’ll defs be back! Warm and spacious, comfy seating for outdoor dining and easy pezy menu log in and pop on your tab! So worth a night with friends, family for a casual catch up or a special occasion

  • Ben O'Leary

Totally appalling customer service! Called on Saturday to check whether they were open and ask what time the kitchen closed. We were told 10:30pm. Upon arriving at 9:00pm, we were bluntly told their kitchen had shut. No amount of explaining that we had called, been told 10:30pm or will spend $50 in Uber’s was going to result in any amount of empathy or attempt to fix their error. They don’t deserve to be in the customer service business.

  • Samantha Barr

The food used to be amazing. Unfortunately it has dramatically dropped off. We had the grilled salmon donburi and the chicken terriyaki donburi, which were absolutely revolting. Two tiny pieces of salmon, not grilled. Tiny serve and we felt ripped off. Also no air conditioning and one fan to cool the restaurant is not sufficient in summer. We have loved this place since it opened, however after such an awful meal we won't be returning.

  • Stefano Ste Savi

Forked out $21 for a main meal and received a kids meal. Shocking portion size, especially during a pandemic when I was one of the very few customers supporting this business. The food was very tasty but why so stingy - I literally got six individual beans, two pieces of tofu, and even the rice was a meager ration. Now I've got to do a Maccas run but curfew has me trapped at home, starving.

  • Chris B

This place is terrible. You have to order through the use of QR codes. The place is run by kids with no interest in customer service or hospitality. The food was bland and very overpriced/expensive. Main dishes filled with a sizeable bed of white rice at a hefty price. I will not return and suggest others avoid.

  • Tyrone Brooker

As someone who does not typically like Sushi styled restaurants, this was a pleasant surprise. I thoroughly enjoyed the food which was essentially all random thanks to the "Feed Me" deal. On top of the good food, there were good beers on tap as well as a nice location and bar seating where you can see the chef in action. Definitely recommend this restaurant for a nice night out

  • Green Point

Even though QR code ordering, zero service existed. No hi, or thank you when we left. Kitchen staff eating with their fingers in plain view of all customers. No hygiene whatsoever. The food was average, not a restaurant quality. Very overpriced for what it is. Will never come back.

Had an awesome dinner at this cosy and friendly local restaurant. Every dish was fresh and tasty. Fish was excellent. Chicken dishes were very tasty. Had fried chicken, sashimi, inside out rolls, gyoza and calamari. Fun to watch the sushi made at the seating near the counter. Early sitting catered to younger families and was great. Highly recommeded.

  • David Rushton

Well I have been wanting to go to Y14 for some time after following them on social media, And I can truly say it was AMAZING!! and exeded every expectation :) the food was so packed with flavour every mouthfull was breathtaking! My partner and I think it is the best Japanese we have ever had 10/10. We can't wait to return with all our friends!

  • Jillian Davies

Nice waitress, some nice flavours, BUT very overpriced.... $14 for a small, bland, vegie sushi plate, no wine for under $12 a glass, beers $12, no apology or recompense for one of our groups meals coming out when we had all finished ours, despite bringing it to staffs attention twice....music too loud to talk, not overly impressed....

  • Michaela Martin

I ordered 2 small dishes for take away. For $34 I was expecting some super tasty Japanese food. Was extremely disappointed with the quality and lack of flavour.. The pancake was a mushy soggy mess of batter and the seared salmon nigiri had no garnish and was probably the worst seared salmon nigiri I’ve had. Feel extremely ripped off.

  • Jessica Edwards

Asked for the music to be turned down so we could actually hear each other, it was turned back up within 10 minutes. One of our dishes came out so late, the rest of the table had finished theirs. No offer of compensation. Expensive drinks and food. Wait staff were pleasant and food was decent. Will not return unfortunately.

  • Jeremy

Good menu, friendly service, good atmosphere - very laid back. Prices are on the high side for the type of eatery this is. The food is good and very well presented, but doesn't quite justify the price. Have had takeaway once and dined in once and that'll probably do me.

Wow... every dish we tried was absolutely delicious. Asked the chef to choose for us & the selection we received was perfect... gyoza the best I've ever had & everything else just as good (melt in your mouth fresh sashimi). Even the wine was perfectly matched. Only negative is it's not close enough to where we live!

  • Justin

Small yet cute little restaurant by Bay road and Sandringham beach. Great vibes with great service not to mention the freshly tasty dishes served here. Heads up, worth while making a booking in advance otherwise if you're a walk in, you'll have to wait until a table is freed up as they're all full for a reason.

  • French Nomad

The food is beautiful, calamari was really fresh and so was the salmon. The sushi is fresh and delicious and the curry tastes really authentic. Would definitely recommend! On top of that you’ll support a local small business, owned by a hard working young family. So you feed your tummy and your Karma …

  • Matthew Purvis

This is easily some of the best Japanese I have eaten, well, pretty much ever. Fresh, exceptionally prepared & delivered to my door. To find a restaurant & team still putting this amount of effort amidst all this uncertainty is what community is all about. Thanks again for a wonderful experience.

  • Tri Vo

We've just returned from Tokyo and the food here is as good as Japanese food gets. Awesome staff with amazing authentic Japanese food prepared fresh right in front of you and being Saturday night the restaurant was busy yet vibrant much like Japan. Definitely would recommend and will be back.

Great vibe, amazing menu and wine list compliments the food perfectly. Obsessed with the panko crumbed chicken curry. Love the indoor/outdoor feel and sitting at the bar overwatching the chefs work their magic. One of the best Japanese restaurants in Melbourne without a doubt.

  • Ryan McPherson

My favourite Japanese in Melbourne. I’ve been here over five times in the last 12 months (5 months of which we were in lockdown) as I constantly find myself craving their Sushi and Sashimi platter! Great spot for date night with the partner, or catching up with an old friend!

  • Leigh Agius

Never had japanese before so was unsure if i would like it. I bloody loved it. We got the chef's choice for $60 wasn't sure if it was going to fill us but we just managed to finish it. My only negative would be the music being too loud which then made everyone talk louder.

A mixed result, most of the meals were excellent but one of our friends ordered the tempura fish with chips (not very Japanese) and that was not up to standard plus the wine option was very poor, if they had offered BYO at least we would have had something drinkable

  • Nick W

A beautiful ambience. Cozy like a Japanese living room. The oven-baked chilli scallops are moreish. Great service. Personal and friendly. The kitchen bar\counter is my pick over a table. Watching the sushi chef work enhanced the dining experience.

  • Sarah Pledger

Very very average Japanese takeaway. Food seemed to be pre-cooked and then re-heated for serving (or in our case not properly heated) - we both had donburri bowls. Price was high for what you get. Very little value for money. We wouldn't go back.

  • Elise Gilchrist
