Shahbag (also Shahbaugh, Bengali: শাহবাগ়Shabagh, IPA: [ˈʃaːbaːɣ]) is a major neighbourhood and a police precinct or thanain Dhaka, the capital and largest city of Bangladesh. It is also a major public transport hub.[1] It is a junction between two contrasting sections of the city—Old Dhaka and New Dhaka—which lie, respectively, to its south and north. Developed in the 17th century during Mughal rule in Bengal, when Old Dhaka was the provincial capital and a centre of the flourishing muslin industry, it came to neglect and decay in early 19th century. In the mid-19th century, the Shahbag area was developed as New Dhaka became a provincial centre of the British Raj, ending a century of decline brought on by the passing of Mughal rule. Shahbag is the location of the nation's leading educational and public institutions, including the University of Dhaka, the oldest and largest public university in Bangladesh, Dhaka Medical College, the largest medical college in the country, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU), and the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology, the largest public university for technological studies in the country. Shahbag hosts many street markets and bazaars. Since Bangladesh achieved independence in 1971, the Shahbag area has become a venue for celebrating major festivals, such as the Bengali New Year and Basanta Utsab. Shahbag's numerous ponds, palaces and gardens have inspired the work of writers, singers, and poets. With Dhaka University at its centre, the thana has been the origin of major political movements in the nation's 20th century history, including the All India Muslim Education Conference in 1905, which led to the All India Muslim League. In 1947, to both the partition of India and the creation of Pakistan; the Bengali Language Movement in 1952, which led to the recognition of Bengali as an official language of Pakistan; and the Six point movement in 1966, which led to the nation's independence. It was here, on 7 March 1971, that Sheikh Mujibur Rahmandelivered a historic speech calling for the independence of Bangladesh from Pakistan, and here too, later that year, that the Pakistani Army surrendered in the Liberation War of Bangladesh. The area has since become a staging ground for protests by students and other groups. It was the site of public protests by around 30,000 civilians on 8 February 2013, against a lenient ruling against war criminals.

Everyone's in a rush here. It's kind of a hub of communication across the city. From here, almost every part of city accessible through various vehicles. Moreover, there are a lot of street foods, available amost whole of the day, even at the late of night, you can get cup of tea and cigarettes here to sit and gossip with your buddies. It's safe as the local police station is nearby. Here is a DBBL ATM booth just beside the entrance (usually which remains closed) of BSMMU. Here you can get the largest market of flowers in the city just oppsite to the the building of national museum. The flowers are getting expensive day by day but bargaining helps most of the time. The worst but the most important thing to know about it is, if you have to cross this stop, you must keep in mind that traffic jam is surely going to kill 30 minutes to 2 hours of your valuable time. Don't stare at the big screens of advertisements while crossing the road.

This is the most busy area in the Dhaka. Advantage: 1.Two main hospital BSMMU and BIRDEM just beside it. 2.Dhaka Medical College can be reached by Rickshaw in 10 minutes. 3. Dhaka University, Bangladesh National Museum also at Shahbag Point. 4.Dhaka Shishu Park Just 5 min walk at the east side. 5.Biggest Flower Market of the country is also here. Besides Buses and transport of every other part of Dhaka city is available here. There is a big screen placed infront of shahbagh for the display of cricket match or advertisement.

Its usually connected us with Kawran Bazar or Farmgate, Dhanmondi or Elephant road, Gulistan or motijheel and Dhka universit. For this issue it has the most important than others. Due to covid 19 outbreak this bus stop remain empty now a days, but it is usually a very busy place. Thousands of vehicles everyday stop there for passengers. Be careful about crossing the streets because vehicles sometimes do not follow any traffic rules. Be careful about hijackers and snatches because they are active in this area, even in daylight. You will find street foods adjacent to bus stop ,they are really unhygenic, so be choosy while eating.

Shahbagh is an important area of the capital. From the bus stand here, you can go to many places including Jatrabari, Gulistan, Motijheel, Sadarghat. Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, Bardem General Hospital and National Museum are located here. Dhaka University, Kataban Market, Aziz Super Market and New Market are a short distance from here. It is a populated area. So be careful.
