The main hall inside the temple is the Hall for Worship of Ancestors, which is one of only four buildings in Beijing to stand on a three-tiered platform, a hint that it was the most sacred site in imperial Beijing. It contains seats and beds for the tablets of emperors and empresses, as well as incense burners and offerings. On the occasion of large-scale ceremonies for worship of ancestors, the emperors would come here to participate. Flanking the courtyard in front of this hall are two long, narrow buildings. These were worship halls for various princes and courtiers. The Western Wing housed the spirit tablets of meritorious courtiers, while the Eastern Wing enshrined various princes of the Ming or Qing dynasty. Behind the Hall for Worship of Ancestors are two other main halls. The first was built in 1420 and used to store imperial spirit tablets. By the 1920s, the Imperial Ancestral Temple and its surrounding spaces had become a public park, and that public park today has been expanded from its original size and is now also known as the Working People's Cultural Palace (劳动人民文化宫; pinyin: Láodòng Rénmín Wénhuà Gōng). This park was extended based on the Imperial Ancestral Hall site, and the park is located east of Tiananmen, while the Zhongshan Park lies to the west. These two parks along with Beihai Park and Jingshan and several other parks have a deep historic tie with the Forbidden City.

The temple gardens are very well maintained. We arrived in the late afternoon and it was very quiet. Quite a contrast with the croud and traffic outside. It is a nice place to visit in about one hour time. Close to the Tiananmen East subway station of line 1. Tickets were 2 RMB per person (04/2018)
It is nice for a walk but nothing special. We are here at weekend and during holidays what makes place crowded. Reason for having only three stars is that entrance to the temple is not included in the ticket. Therefore you have to go to ticket office and back, costs additional 15 yuans.
Located inside Tiananmen gate a stones throw from the Forbidden City, it feels like you are a world away from the throngs of tourists and the chaos that is the Forbidden City. This place has a ton of history, serving as a temple to many…...
This temple is a nice pre-snack before the forbidden city. It showcases some exhibitions of which we found them all to be quite cool and interesting. If you manage to not get a ticket to the FC, this could be an alternative as well.
This temple is not as overcrowd like forbidden city but is also very imponent! The architecture is very similar to the forbidden city, with the difference that you can take pictures alone
amazing architecture and ancient historic museum, you will need to walk a lot, but it worth the experience.

Even the Imperial Ancestral Temple doesn't draw attention away from the magnitude that the surroundings build hold, but it's still worth a look.…...
Absolutely amazing, it is very busy here make sure you take a book or audio book if not can be difficult to know what your looking at.
Similar architecture to the Confucian Temple and the forbidden city, but without the local and tourist crowds.
Way cheaper than the forbidden palace. Like a mini version that's easier on the legs.
lugar grandioso y poderoso ❤️❤️…...
Great place to go on the weekend when the other sites are packed with tourists.
Lovely place with amazing history. The voice guide was helpful

The Forbidden city was part of a trip-a-deal tour with friends
