This is one of my favorite NYPL in the city. Even though it doesn’t carry the biggest selection of books and materials, it possesses a quiet study room one floor below, where there no activity whatsoever. Most libraries I’ve visited are quite silent, but there is always some kind of activity going on- people are walking by, picking up/returning books at the front desk, etc. This room is distant from all the activities mentioned above. I am glad I live close by and can visit often. *During the warmer months there is an outside garden area which is quiet and you can enjoy some fresh air. !!!The only thing to note is that the Study room is not open at all times. There needs to be a registered volunteer present, and sometimes there is none, but most of the times I’ve been there, it’s been all good.

It’s a good quiet library. Lots of books for children and normally, pre covid, there were many programs available for everyone of every age. The library building itself is beautiful, clean but not stroller friendly. It does have a lift for wheelchairs but can only be used for such. As far as the staff, they can be helpful but before being able to explain yourself and your needs, you are met with a bothered attitude. I’ve experienced this and seen it multiple times with different staff members. My children won’t ask for help because they were once intimidated. It’s unfortunate since we’re in a very tolerant neighborhood.

Could be better. Some of the staff are really unkind. Reading the reviews makes me question, why are most of the 5 star reviews white? Anyways, I believe this Library has potential but, not with some of the staff. When it comes to working at a library you have to be kind and have patience with people, especially kids. I understand it can get hectic and noisy and some caretakers take advantage of that, but you can’t lose patience. Just today, one of the staff was talking mean to one of the kids. It just doesn’t look great for this place. I’ll just keep going to the one at 53rd street!

Such a gem in the neighborhood. It is always clean and have a decent book selection. The stairs make it hard to bring a large stroller but there is a great room upstairs for children section. I took advantage of the free resume review with Sherry - to be honest I had low expectations. However I found it was hugely informative. I left with a WEALTH of knowledge, perspective, and resources after spending the 30 mins with her. Come prepared and with an open mind and can really benefit from the service.

Bring your headphones if you plan to study, very noisy! This is my local library and they have a good variety of books, DVD’s, also lectures and other services.. but I do think they need to put some serious emphasis and cultivate the habit of silence and respect for people that actually come here to have some quite place to study !! I understand the second floor is for kids but their caretakers should understand that this is not a playground, maybe staff should promote some quietness..

For those who grew up using library to study and seeing helpful staff, this is a disappointment. The staff are self-serving, closing the library to suit their convenience. Just this week, the library closed early two days in a row—yesterday at 5 pm (when it should've stayed open until 7pm) and today at 3 pm (when it should've been open until 5 pm). Mind you, the library opens at 11 am. How low have the standards fallen for public service and public institutions!

The carrer coach is unprofessional. Very angry and was yelling at me during the session. Insulted my work and summary an said. It was unbelievable and ridiculous. She was beyond unprofessional, demeaning and all over a gap on a resume. All of this was done in front of my young child. I will never again come to this place. I felt sick to my stomach after dealing with this person. Horrible.

If you are not a card carrying member, there is something wrong with you. The library allows for inter library loans, and you can ask the book you want via their online reservation system to be delivered to a branch that is convenient to your location. NYPL lets me borrow audiobooks and ebooks for free via the overdrive media app.

My experience with this NYPL branch has been great! It's never crowded, probably because it's sort of tucked away between avenues, and the staff is generally very nice. There's outlets and tables and computers and bathrooms. The printing process is not very streamlined though, and it makes getting work done difficult sometimes.

Many of the reviewers speaking of staff negatively have no idea what these people do on a daily basis and take interactions that have nothing to do with themselves out of context. Judge only your own interactions. This place is amazing. Super busy and still a gem tucked away on a side street.

One of the best NYPL library locations. Even in such a busy neighborhood, it’s never crowded. The hold-pickup and book drop off is so smooth, you can be in and out in a minute. The book drop off is also contactless. Staff is always helpful. Highly recommend using this location more!

Extremely knowledgeable and friendly staff. Melissa works with class groups there, and does a great job presenting library info to the students. There selection is decent for a small library, and the facilities are great. It's also bustling with community activity and families!

  • Khan

Best library in the busy neighbourhood. You and sit and relax and read what you want yo read. Staff is super friendly , professional and helpful. Book section is awesome and if a book is nit available they will arrange it for you from other branches.

Between the staff talking and laughing loudly the entire time I have been here (an hour) and their failure to quiet anyone else down this is a terrible place to get anything done. It is a non-stop party of crying babies and noisey patrons and staff.

  • Sedrick Jackson

Best & most helpful staff I've ever met! They answered all of my library & internet related questions with ease. Gave me a valuable resource site with LINKEDIN & made everything I needed SO much easier to obtain. 10/10 would go here again!

Update: there is still a note here about being closed for renovations! Please fix this! NYPL, you have to remove it. Love the renovation. Thank you NYPL for preserving and modernizing this older branch.

Open for drop off and contactless pickup. Borrow a book, it is free, you will get off the screens. And its way more sustainable than buying new books. It is a no brainer - be smart read a book.

  • Mel Smith

Useless branch. No drop box to return books. I needed to return books and DVDs and for the past two attempts, there was a handwritten "Closed Today" sign even though it's their regular hours.

  • Sebastian Müller

I have been going to the english speaking group since October 2015. It is a really good opportunity to further improve your english and get in contact with people all over the world.

Visited on a Sat afternoon and the 1st floor study is pretty packed but nice if you can get a seat. The Floor Basement study is great EXCEPT in the Summer it’s pretty warm down there

  • Harry Seitz

My former local library when I was living in that neighborhood. I still go there now even though I live in Queens. Great study area downstairs, clean bathrooms, and a friendly staff.

  • Jay Cee

It was a nice library and had a good amount of outlets but definitely the most unwelcoming I’ve seen in NYC. Some of the staff seemed utterly disgusted I was there. Very weird.

  • Barbara Rodgers

Crying children. Teens in the adult-only section. Books are sticky. Will not be returning to books that have an unusually sticky substance on them. I'll buy a book.

  • Christina Kamerow

Everyone is so nice, there is a garden in the back, the process for checking out is easy, upstairs kids section has so many books! Great kids activity area too.

  • Steven T Lee

The great place to read and rent books, CD, movies. The friendly staffs always ready to help you. Avoid going after 2pm weekdays if you want quiet hours.

  • Gary Wright

I love my local library. It's managed wonderfully, staffed with the best, & all it takes is to visit another branch to realize how superior this one is.

  • David Lawrence Scuderi

Still the same. Beautiful building. A little cramped when it is busy, but that is a small price to pay to pass an afternoon here. Clean restroom.

  • Edward Brandwein

Beautiful old Carnegie library. Nice staff. Strong wifi. Clean restroom. Perfect place to read or work remotely
