I've been visiting Abbey House since I was a child so took my own children, 6 and 12, now the museums are back open. Disappointing that the older child's activity hunt included questions about history that they were just told to "guess" rather than have to fact find or search for within the displays. What's this activity teaching them? I did ask the worker who also didn't know the answers without checking a sheet and said he didn't write the quiz when I asked where the information was. The music exhibition was identical to one we've already seen in Leeds City museum so it was a bit lack lustre and not really child friendly, the juke box ate our money and didn't work and the displays for a family gallery in this section where too adult, yet all visitors had children with them. Love the victorian entertainment machines and good to see most of them in good working order throughout the museum and there was a great selection of books in the gift shop so everyone got one. However with footfall low I would expect more effort to attract the families in over the summer holidays and a bit more effort with the kids quizzes. Historical fact hunts are better than nursery rhyme hunts for older kids. We still do not know if tree bark was ever user in aspirin either and that was one of the questions to "guess" yet we stood at the chemist window for absolutely ages trying to find a clue and there was nothing. If I gave a quiz to a class without the ability to find the answer themselves, ofsted would mark the lesson unsatisfactory. We've done much better ones here in the past and the visit would have been longer and more involving if it linked to the actual displays and street scenes! We will visit again but not for a while as I was expecting a bit of effort since covid and the free museum in Leeds is much better for families and has much more to do, so you'd get a much longer museum experience there. Thanks, and please change that awful kids quiz to one that has findable clues! From a (frequent history) teacher and two sons.
What a little gem of a museum. The parking is free nearby at the side of the playground. The museum itself is opposite the Kirkstall Abbey so therfore a superb location with plenty to see. The admissions fee to the museum is really reasonable especially for a family ticket. Inside the museum (and don't forget to explore upstairs too) is a wealth of information and historical artefacts from all ages, including a walk down a recreated street , including old shops and houses- really nicely done and gives you a sense of what it was like to live back in those times. Upstairs is a mix of walking you through the ages, including sports memorabilia and old toys, games. You can even purchase for a small fee old penny coins and use in the collection of old slot machines....you might even get your fortune read on one of them :-) Not sure in regards to wheelchair access, you would probably be best to enquire. The is a small cafe with a reasonable small menu, does take a little while to get served at busy times. Some outdoor seating and the place can also be hired for events etc I believe. The gardens and outside is lovely and the staff friendly, apart from feeling a little 'watched over' at the coin machines as there was a staff member stood there (assume they were there to help if needed?). Plenty of things to read and for the kids to interact with. Not the biggest of venues but the reasonable admission fee reflects this. Check out the Abbey across the road (separate fee to go in) well worth a look. Museum has a gift shop. Only negative is that I wish the admission was free to the Abbey if you purchase tickets to the museum and vice versa, but it isn't and you have to pay separately. A good day out. Thank you

Sunday was our first visit to this museum. My daughter and I were taking my two granddaughters of 4 and 9. My elder granddaughter is studying the Victorians at school so I thought this would be enjoyable for her but I wasn't too sure about the younger one. However they both had a really great time. I am disabled and the staff could not have been more helpful and practically all of the museum was accessible. I couldn't have managed the children without my daughter who is also my carer as there were lots of little places to run around and the disabled toilet was excellent and accessible but I needed help to look after the children. We found that by the time we reached the upstairs the little one was tiring but we were so impressed by the toys and in particular the dolls houses that we are going to return shortly after Christmas. Attention to detail was incredible and the interesting wallpaper in the toilet and round about was very educational! We had heard that the cafe wasn't up to much but we had a lovely drink there. The only one unfortunate thing was that my daughter was given big mugs of hot chocolate and as she is not used to children she didn't think to ask for half measures. Lovely gift shop with many pocket money purchases.
Small museum set on the corner between the car park opposite and Kirkstall Abbey over the road. Has loos and gift shop, lift to other floors. Café next door with outdoor seating and gardens nearby. Has really good replica streets with shops etc, on a par with York Castle Museum's. You can go into most of the shops, including the pub, but you can't get a beer, ha. All authentic artefacts and plenty of them. The fascinating shops are really well done and interesting, best part of the museum. Upstairs there are toys; dolls houses; old penny arcade machines that are mostly still operational; embroidery samplers and, if it's your thing - a chopped off elephant's foot made into a footstool and a skinned tiger and other assorted taxidermy. Gross, not my bag, walked through that section very quickly. But the streets are great and the staff are oh so friendly and helpful. Recommended if you want to become a time traveller and experience the days of yore.

Visited on a miserable drizzly afternoon with our almost 3 year old grandson. We hadn't been to the museum since we'd taken our own children and were really impressed. Our grandson loved the old street with shops and the 'old' toys in the display cabinets upstairs. He couldn't understand why he couldn't have them out to play but thankfully there are plenty of interactive areas and he was easily distracted. His favourites however were the old slot machines, he loves skeletons and anything ghoulish !!! The staff were great, really helpful and informed and actually seemed to enjoy their job which was refreshing. As grandparents, often stuck for things to do on a miserable day, we made a good choice
Victorian reproduction of a street with shops as they would have been in Victorian times. Very interesting for the children. There were sheets to fill in to identify various things for example crowns, which had been placed in various locations which the children enjoyed. Most of the staff were pleasant and the guide who took our tickets was very interesting and informative. The only issue I had was with a member of staff called Jason who spoke to me very abruptly, was extremely rude and this spoilt the experience somewhat. Shame considering most of the others demonstrated a very good level of customer care.

Great little gem in Leeds to hide away and go back in time when it's wet and cold outside. This is a small place but fills up some time when finding things for kids to do. There is a free car park over the road which has a kids play area next to it. The museum is a great little place where there is a crafts table for kids to draw and colour in as soon as you enter on the ground floor. It's a great little place with purpose built Victorian shops and streets which are all in a nice warm environment but gives you the feel of actually walking the streets and see how the shops would have been back in the early 1900's. If it's a good day you can even walk over the road to kirkstal abbey.
I had completely forgotten how lovely this attraction is. Great for all ages and abilities as it's full of lots of toys , interactive areas , and lots to look at. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The toilets and exhibitions are clean and looked after, some look a little tired. Looking forward to returning when the new exhibition opens. I visited with 2x3 year olds and a 2 year old and they were fully engaged. I have not given full 5 stars, as there is potential for it to get a whole lot better when the dressing up area reopens. The car park is across the road from the museum, next to a playground. Of course there is also the abbey to explore too.
You could spend a few hours in this family friendly museum easily. Impressive Victorian Leeds street - it felt you were on a film set. There are also childhood galleries to see toys from the past and large collection of reconditioned original penny slot machines, some of which are still in excellent working order. To bring this all to life they really need to train the staff to interact more - share knowledge. Car park across the road and worth checking ticket options as you can use your Art Pass plus discount for Leeds Residents. The coffee shop has now moved across the road to Kirkstall Abbey. Worth a visit if visiting Leeds.
We absolutely loved the museum. So interactive. We were a little surprised because we weren’t expecting anything special. But it was a lovely family friendly environment. The staff were so helpful and informative while finding a good balance of letting us do our own thing. Would highly recommend doing this along with the abbey. The cafe also produces some very tasty, good quality food. It was lovely to have something hot on a cold day. Will definitely bring visitors here when they visit in the future. Highly enjoyable experience.
Let us start with the downside... Adults have to pay to get in. At nearly a fiver each you would think that it couldn't get worse, think again. The tea, coffee, snacks and gifts are astronomically priced. BUT... The museum is fab. A dry place on a damp day. It is a lot larger than it appears from the outside. A Victorian street, a dressing up room, several play areas and gorgeous grounds. Even the loo is educational. We will definitely visit again.
I was expecting something bigger but I wasn’t disappointed. It’s quite small but absolutely amazing! I visited during the Halloween week and they added so many decorations around the Victorian streets. It was so beautiful! You can enter inside some shops and there are little details everywhere. You really feel like you traveled back in time. Upstairs there’s also a museum about the childhood in Victorian era. It was very interesting and nice!
What an amazing museum!!! We weren't expecting too much as it doesn't look like much from the outside but couldn't have been more wrong!! A whole Victorian street waits on ground level, complete with lots of shops, a back alley and a Sunday school. Dress up room for extra added fun. Upstairs has a temporary exhibitions called danger zone which was also super interesting. Café downstairs serves nice sandwiches and cakes at reasonable prices.
Kids found it quite boring. We went here during half term as a rainy day activity. The kids were excited at the prospect of seeing and playing with lots of old toys. In reality there was a small amount of brio train track in a corner and a few coin operated machines (pay extra for these). It wasn't massively expensive to get in, but we were only there for 45 minutes before we had been around it all. Not a great place for young children.
I totally love this place! This is my first ever museum visit in England and the Abbey House Museum made it really special. I like the story telling that begins at the ground floor(with Victorian times) and then transforms as you go up to the second floor. You see the transition in the way of life of children, families and even music has shaped the Abbey House and it's environs. There are also really cool stuff to learn.
Excellent museum, so much to see and do, especially for those with younger children although plenty for adults also. Well worth the very cheap admission, family ticket just a tenner. The actual abbey, amazing ruins, are free and just over the road, equally stunning, the remains of the tower are very impressively high even today. Superb way to pass a good few hours all round when you add in some very pleasant riverside walks.
I was very impressed by this museum, there's so much more than i thought, especially for the kids. We went to see the old fashioned street and were surprised to find a full floor of toys, dressing up areas, old penny amusements, and even a reading corner in a shoe! It is fairly priced and has a free car park across the road, plus a park next door and the Abbey to walk around too on a dry day. All in all a good day out.
Lovely nostalgic trip back to a museum I last visited as a child. I took my kids during the Easter holiday and we all loved exploring the Victorian streets, shops and alleys. The childhood toys on display in the upstairs galleries brought back plenty of memories as well. Great place to visit and very reasonable entry fees too.

Despite living only nine miles from this museum for many years today was my first visit and I was amazed! The place is packed with interesting Victoriana, including a mock-up of a street of shops, including a pub, reminiscent of the one in the Castle Museum in York. The whole building is a treasure trove of interesting exhibits and well worth the small admission price. Why wasn't I told of this place before?
We really enjoyed our visit. The shops were interesting and provoked interesting conversation. The exhibits took us back in time. Videos were excellent and well worth watching. A little snap shot in Leeds gone by around every corner. Educational and fun. Please support this fabulous museum. Great value for money too.

Really good and interesting. The only disappointment was the cafe which had a long line of customers and just 1 poor member of staff serving and taking the money. So we skipped it because we wanted to visit the Abby ruins. This was also an issue with the cafe at Temple Newsam 2 weeks ago and Leeds Museum a few months back. Please put on more serving staff for your cafes at Leeds Museums and Galleries.
Very lovely place, especially for walks or other activities. We've went there to see Santa's trail and kids were happy. At the end we've visited the gift shop we're we were asked to put our face coverings on and to use hand sanitiser. Also you have to use a "track and trace" NHS app. Unfortunately the cafe shop was closed, but you can get there hot and cold drinks to take away tho.
A recreation of a Victorian street with several old shops, also a small toy museum, selection of old "penny machines" which you actually use old penny's 1d (pre decimal) to play them. Good place to visit for a couple of hours. You do have to pay to enter museum, but car park opposite is free.

Great little museum but it is small so not somewhere that will be an all day long outing. There are examples of old shops and plenty of activities for the kids like dressing up and interactive screens. We went during Easter so there were free crafts for the kids and a science workshop. We didn't use the cafe as we had taken a picnic with us, which we ate at kirkstall abbey.
The staff are so friendly and polite they will give answers to any Questions you ask them the museum starts from Victorian era and there are games and toys from before the Victorian 's down to the original sega and other's that you can have a go on and machines to change for old money so you can participate in the games some games l can remember a very good museum....
Most Victorian things like dress, books, living items are there.the museum shows the lifestyle of victorians.. a place that need more than 2 hours to spend.. Cafe is also available.some toys sets are kept for children to play.. coin drop and play machines are shown which is used for fun in early days.old watch store, bar, chemical store, hotel models are displayed..
If you’re wanting to have a taste of life in Leeds in times gone by, this is one museum I recommend. I particularly love the recreated Victorian street and the various shop fronts and pub you can enter to get a real feel for how things were. It is a small museum, but it is definitely worth visiting.

Beautiful museum and friendly staff. The entry prices are very reasonable, and I managed to get a discount with a student card. There is so much to see and do, little kids would definitely enjoy this place and it seems to be a popular school trip destination! The Victorian street feels very authentic and the information booklets are very detailed.
Fabulous social history museum with a lovely Victorian street and much more to see than I expected from the outside. The current 'A Woman's Place' exhibition surprised and shocked me: there have been so many "firsts" for women as recently as from the Victorian era onward... and we've still got a way to go before there's proper equality!
First saw this place on a most haunted showing. I wanted to check it out. Our son loved seeing the 'olden days', lovely building. We went on a sunday so unfortunately the cafe did not have some items on the menu. Our son liked having a go of the old toys and a lovely lady, who was staff, took the time to talk to him about each toy.
Took two small grandchildren (two and five years old) to this Hallowe’en event. Staff had clearly gone to a great deal of trouble to dress all the shop-fronts on the ground floor appropriately complete with ‘skeleton’ staff etc. Very well done.

Fantastic family fun! The museum has a wonderful range of activities and things to do. I went there a couple times as a kid and learnt a lot of things about the Victorian era, it was really helpful. I recently visited the museum to join a history club they had. It was a lot of fun. The staff are very polite and helpful
Loved the ground floor of the building - Very nicely done. However, we didn’t quite enjoy the first floor. (Personal opinion, of course). But in general, the place is worth visiting and the staff are very helpful and friendly.

Great place to go to with any ages. Staff very Friendly and helpful. Beautifully kept and lots of lovey things to see. Gift shop and cafe a little overpriced but only as you'd expect. Great that there was free parking and a play park across the road as so that extended the day and the kids got to let off steam.
This is a nice museum and the staff are very helpful. You first go into a mock up of an olden street with shops and a bar etc. You can go upstairs to the you part and it has old fashioned amusement machines and toys which have been collected over the years. Good for an hour or so. The cafe could be better.
Abbey House is part of the Kirkstall Abbey grounds with free parking available across the side road. The Abbey itself is worth visiting as well as the house museum and playground nearby. Kirkstall valley is full of places worth visiting so spending a day in the area can easily be occupied and be enjoyed.
Surprised of the size and information available, the preservation is incredible, even the old street smells you can sense as you pass at certain street, the kids where educated. I definitely recommend and would go back.

Excellent museum with a great selection of toys for children to play with as well. Has a model street and shops underground and has dress up activities for children including activities to keep them entertained. would definitely recommend a visit with or without children. Very educational but fun.
Pleasantly surprised by the museum it's so cheap to get in but inside the museum is absolutely magnificent full of history, the recreated Victorian streets are perfect, a lot of old machinery still there too, made me feel like I understood what it was like to be a Victorian, it was all explained.
Words cannot do this place justice. We walked into a Victorian street to begin with, and were met with curiosities belonging to a different age. It was magical, wondrous, romantic even. It was an experience more than a 'museum'. It would be enriching to go again because there was so much to see.
We loved it here. The Victorian road was super cool. I think, as a recommendation, you should definitely add carriage noises or just background ambiance to the road. Other than that, it was so fun and cute!

Our children have fun there and that's our main focus, we enjoy seeing them having a good time! Worth a quick visit. No problem to access with a buggy. Parking is free across the road. Coffee shop is good. If you have time to spare there is also a children's playground next to the car park.

What we were able to see was pretty good, unfortunately the upstairs was closed due to staff shortage and that is more than half. Hopefully they will be fully open soon and we will go back

The level of detail with the street recreations is great. Not a huge museum but big enough to spend a few hours with the exhibit part of the museum changing each year. Not too expensive, free parking and good to combine with a visit to the Abbey or something else nearby.
It was fantastic the last time I went there I was about 10 years old. A lot of the things brought back memories, we had a six years old with us and she had a great time. I would recommend the museum to anyone of any age the Victorian looking street is well worth a visit.
Enjoyed your lovely cafe and our weekend visit to the interesting museum. Loved the Women of May event. It really brought to life the lives of women at that time. How lucky we are now, thanks to them. Pleasant friendly staff. I would highly recommend a visit - all ages.
Great little museum - like a smaller Beamish with the old Street etc. With plenty of different old shops/houses to look into and walk around. Reasonably priced too, £5.20 per adult - free parking and right next to the abbey which is definitely worth a walk around.
What a delightful place to visit.interesting, well set out, informative and with friendly staff.much has been included to be interesting to children too.enjoyed our visit hugely.

Fabulous place I love it, stepping back in time to Victorian Leeds. Good with kids because it doesn’t take too long. Good choice of food in the cafe too, basic but tasty. They didn’t have trays for the high chairs. Lots of vegan / dairy free cake options.
The upstairs wasn’t that good but the Victorian streets were nice. It was still enjoyable but I wouldn’t go back again. It could have better directions to get around.
