I had a disappointing experience at Academy Sports and Outdoors recently. I visited the store the day before a long-distance fishing trip to purchase a super combo hunting and fishing license, something I've done before without issues. However, upon reaching my fishing destination, I discovered that the license was issued in someone else's name but with my address. I returned to the store the following day, and to their credit, they promptly corrected the mistake. However, my dissatisfaction doesn't end there. While in the store, I found two fish cleaning tables neatly stacked on a bottom shelf with a price tag of $54.99 each, clearly labeled as "fillet tables." When I brought one of these tables to the checkout, it rang up at $89.99. I explained the situation to the manager, who dismissed it by suggesting that someone had moved the tables to try to get a lower price. I pointed out that many state laws require truth in advertising, and the store's pricing should align with what's displayed. Despite this, the manager refused to honor the marked price. While Kevin, the manager, appeared fair in his demeanor, it's evident that the store has a recurring issue with mistakes and lacks consistency in taking responsibility for them. Ultimately, I left the store without the table I wanted, feeling frustrated and let down by the customer service and pricing practices at Academy Sports and Outdoors. This experience has left me questioning the store's commitment to providing accurate information and fair pricing to its customers. (the image is when I returned to the display and took a piture to show the discrepancy) close up of the tag apparently I was to know that it was a work station not a fillet table though the box states it can ne used to fillet. *****New Update*** I had a mixed experience at Academy Sports and Outdoors today. About a week ago, I reached out regarding a price discrepancy on a fillet table. The back office contacted me today to address the issue, which was appreciated. However, when I returned to the same store to purchase archery accessories today, I encountered another price discrepancy. The shelf price was $29.99, but it rang up at $31.99. Initially, I thought of just returning the items, but then I asked Sydney, a manager, to accompany me to the item. Sydney was aware of my previous issue and handled it with grace, acknowledging the difference and adjusting the price. While this visit was handled much better, it still made me feel like a problem-maker for encountering incorrect tags twice in such a short time. I want to commend Sydney for her excellent service. However, it's crucial for the store to address its pricing issues to ensure a smoother shopping experience for all customers.

The absolute worst customer service ever! Jason was rude, dismissive, combative and passed the buck in a major way. I work for a non-profit. We ordered 750 uniform pants for $13,000 from Academy online. The online Academy employee told me to take my rcp't and tax free form into the store to get my taxes refunded from the order ($730) This is a very big deal to our organization. Jason told me that the Academy online person was a "temp worker who worked from home and didn't know what she was talking about". He refused to refund the taxes. At first he told me he would need to return each of the 750 pants I bought individually and give me an Academy gift card. When I said ok - he then refused and even though I had the online receipt, order number, and tax free form complete he said he couldn't find the order. He then said I needed to bring in a barcode off the invoice that was attached to the shipping box. He basically tried to get me to leave in every way possible. I asked him if he'd write down exactly what he needed from me and he said no. I asked him for his last name and he said "you don't need my last name". I was extremely patient and calm and he was so combative that it really took me off guard. I am purchasing 750 pants for underprivileged kids and he is not honoring what the Academy representative directly told me was company policy. I am NEVER shopping at Academy again and I hope Jason feels good about cheating a 501(c)3 for impoverished children out of $730 much needed funds!

Even with all the construction and mess, this store still manages to shine through above the rest. We know it's not in the best part of town, nor is it easy to get to this location but it's worth the little bit of extra effort. I purchased an Inversion Table online that showed to be in stock at this store. Immediately after placing the order I went out to work on a few things and begin making my journey down to pick it up. By the time I got down to the store after several stops it was almost 9pm, closing time. I let them know why I was there and promptly a manager came up to greet me. Now you and I know when a manager greets you at the front of the store it's either really bad or really really bad... they had been calling me to let me know that the table that I had purchased was the floor model and wanted to make sure that was okay with me. Due to covid-19 and the size of my car, I thought it best to get a brand new one in a box that had no germs on it and that I could transport back home. That was going to cost more, great I thought but oh well. The manager could see I was a bit frustrated with the situation and she sweetened the deal for me. I left with a brand new table in the box, a smile on my face and Academy with another happy customer. Thanks again!

Spent over an hour to simply pick-up an FFL transfer from this location despite having a current TX License to Carry which allows one to forgo the lengthy version of the NICS check. The gun counter clerk was great, no complaints there, he was courteous, efficient, and handled everything within his duties. My issue was with the length of time I was forced to wait after the clerk had to call a member of management to walk me out with the firearm I had picked up, which Im aware is standard practice for firearm purchases. However, waiting nearly 45 minutes while the clerk desperately paged & called for someone to simply walk me out with my pick-up was beyond ridiculous. And, to add to my unpleasant experience, it was not until checking out that I learned Academy has raised their FFL transfer fee from the already exorbitant $40 fee to a $60 fee without ANY mention of sich on their website or at the firearms counter. I am highly disappointed with this visit especially considering I have had nothing but decent past experiences at this location previously, which is the reason I choose to shop this specific Academy location vs the many other locations in Austin.

Great customer service! I went looking for ammunition and from the gun counter I heard the sales associate (Josh D.) asking if I needed help. I told him I was interested in looking for a powerful hunting cartridge (as I believed my own rifle would not be up to the task) and he gave me some recommendations. He then asked what kind of sporting rifle I had and told him the specific make and model to which he then suggested a conversion kit. He even helped me deduce the diameter of the twist rate of the barrel diameter, something I had to acknowledge I didn't even know about my own gun. (I am new to firearms). Josh pretty much helped me save a major amount of money by informing me something I could do to my own rifle instead of buying another one and had some great suggestions on ammo I could use on it, which I bought on my way out. I live up in round Rock but I'm willing to drive down to Austin and spend my money's worth for the great customer service and information. I left pretty happy today knowing more about the ballistics of my firearm. I'm definitely coming back around more now. Thanks you, Josh for steering me in the right direction.

Here's my experience from the last time I visited this store: - They didn't seem to have any carts, so I asked an employee. She said she didn't have time to look for one. I kept looking and found one, but it didn't really work. This was surprising because the store wasn't really that busy. I would expect them to have more working carts. - Half the things I wanted didn't have prices on them - Shoes have anti-theft devices going through the laces, meaning you can't loosen them to try them on - Hats have anti theft going through the brim, so you can't really get a feel for the sizing - Got to the cashier, couldn't buy an item because the bar code wouldn't scan. The cashier then spent about 3 minutes tapping on her phone, until I gave up and told her I didn't want it anymore. The price tag was on the item, so I thought she would've at least be able to type in the price. This doesn't make it a terrible experience, but all the little annoyances are enough to make me think twice about coming back. They have a great selection and good prices, but I also get that online.

I bought a pair of sketchers there. I was in terrible feet pain especially after the surgery I had and we were in vacation (I was sad messing everyone moment because of my pain) People were very helpful, they come to you and ask to help you. They brought more than 20 pair of shoes and made me try each of them to be sure I pick the one that helps me to walk. My experience was similar to a high-end store where every client has an agent that takes care of him. And it was not only for me, a lady came with her daughter and was wondering which size to buy, they brought a special ruler and made her try what suits her... You are very professional, thank you for your all! The shoes are now 24h on my feet and I can walk without pain, thank you!

This is my nearest academy store. I've lived in this area for years now and have visited this store multiple times. Throughout last year 2016 and this year I have had to visit a few times. I would like to say that my experience there has been not satisfactory any of those times. The staff is not available when you need them, and when you find them, you see them very relaxed talking to each other at the front desk. Every time I went I had trouble finding the products i needed and after looking through the mess they had I decided to look for someone to ask about it just to find out that they are out of stock. I remember this store use to be a decent place to shop. Im taking my business elsewhere. Thanks.

  • Kimberly Witt

I did make purchases. Many howevers... I hope this critisism will improve future shopping experience. Cashier charged me full price on an item that had a reduction with a clear tag. It had to be removed and management needed to see approve. Really pushed Academy card application but did not give me prices as marked. I called the day before I went to confirm items I was looking for were there. That was not reliable information. When in store the stockers tried to point me in the direction of what I was very specific about. I am not that kind of shopper who enjoys roaming aimlessly around the store. No if I ask you where an item is. Go there with me please don't point over there, guessing.

Hesitantly Went in store with friends, not wanting to because I had on pajamas. At first, no one said anything to us. But Abel came along and was very helpful. He even went and got us a buggy to put the big boy toy car in without us having to ask, asked if we needed help with anything else, and stuck around to answer anymore questions that we had. Now, that's what I call great customer service. Also, the store is in a great location and was clean, as well as, fully stocked. Cashier was also helpful. I definitely recommend this as a good place to shop and purchase miscellaneous items such as toys, sports/tennis shoes, bicycles, etc.

  • Jolanda Prozzi

I have been going to this location for 10 years and the service has never been great. After today, I will never go back. I asked one of the staff to hold the last of an item for me that was too bulky while I did my shopping. He looked disinterested but said he would. I went to remind him after about 5 minutes to hold the item for me. When I went up to the register to pay for all my items (about 15 minutes) I was informed that the item was just sold. The staff person made a mock attempt to see if they had another one. They did not. I left all the items that I was planning to buy and exited the store. I am never going back.

Went in to look for some shoes on sale for my husband. We didn't end up being able to get the shoes we intended to buy but there was an exceptionally hard working lady named Diane who went on a mission to help us try to find the right sized shoe (turns out the display was incorrectly placed and they didn't actually have it in stock). She tried so hard to help us get what we needed, looking online and through stacks and stacks of boxes as it said there was one pair. I'm giving the 5 stars for her. We didn't buy anything so couldn't leave a positive customer review for her. Very sweet lady, thanks Diane!

I went to this location to pick up a canopy and a few sets of weights for it and others I own. I went to the back to the camping area and looked and looked for the weights that were supposed to be with the canopys. I eventually found them on the top shelf! These are weights that are well into 15 to 20 pounds and for the life of me I couldn't figure out why they were on the top shelf. Of course no one was around to help so I had to get them down myself. I did and made the purchase. So maybe put them on the lower shelf instead that no one gets hurt. Otherwise it's a great store with plenty of inventory.

If you feel the need to stock up on firearms on a rather uncertain Election Day, look no further than Academy! With Walmart no longer selling hunting or home defense weapons, you can still get those Walmart price points by going to Academy. I looked at several gun shops in the greater Austin area and the Academy prices beat them all by a mile. In some cases, their rates are *half* of what other places were charging. Friendly, knowledgeable sales staff. And considering the number of people there when I popped in, they were extremely patient and calm as well. They will get my business again, for sure.

  • John Brown

I'm a bow hunter so I love this place..they have great mens clothing section just I can't afford to buy any of them Most remarkable I have been shopping in this store 25 plus years heck maybe way longer than that. For the age of the store it looks very good and hats off to management and staff for not falling in the old traps of not caring anymore..its clean..its orginized..store makes sense..people are always nice ..seems like they work a small crew with the same familiar faces..I'm sure Corp will mess it all up and move to a new building with new people...but we had it for a while Thanks Academy

  • Emily K.

We went to Academy today shopping for long johns, we were helped by an awesome employee named Sheila who was very helpful! The long john selection was minimal, only one brand offered, and there were 2 employees who were wearing their masks under their noses- which is scary at this point. This Academy has some perks, great location, easy parking, and returning/exchanges are easy too. Sometimes finding what you need is a challenge, the layout is a little confusing- aisles on the periphery and a maze of clothes in the center. Good selection of Longhorn stuff, wish more of it was 100% cotton!

One of my favorite a stores to shop because I love sports and outdoor products. On this occasion I ordered online and used curbside pickup...or tried to use it. After receiving notification that my order was ready for pickup I arrived, parked in the designated spot and texted the number given me. Received a response that an associate was on it. Five, ten, then fifteen minutes go by and nobody showed up. I went inside and finally got my order after showing my ID to 2 different people. They need some work on this part of their store offerings.

  • Richard Durham

Great place to buy sporting goods. I visited a few days ago and purchased two pairs of shoes, clogs and some sweatpants. The staff is helpful and professional. Most of the store is help yourself, especially the shoe department, but associates are available if you need assistance. They have good stock levels and have plenty of merchandise. I purchased some running shoes and socks on another occasion and Academy was out of the particular brand of socks. The socks were a 6-pack and they replaced them with 2 sets of three at the same price.

  • Rosendo Castellanos

I always come to academy for any outdoor needs or any workout equipment that I have to buy for myself. They have a wide variety of a ton of equipment for all sports for all outdoor activities including fishing, archery, shooting and gun equipment. They have clothing, shoes and everything else for sale and for whenever it is game season. They also have UT merch there for sale at a very good price. Definitely a place to come if you are an outdoorsy person and if you just want to browse and see what to spend money on.

  • Mariah Chuu

This company is horrible. They make their employees come in while a winter storm is going on and threatening them That if they don’t show up, they will get written up and will count against them !! I bet if something happened to one of their employees on the way to work. They are not going to pay any hospital bills so they should really cut it out. management is trash and horrible. They should close academy down. Making them go in for $16 an hour max lmao what a joke!!

  • Charles Bastian

Not really a fan. I walked around for about 30 minutes, with no offers of help from the numerous employees I saw (those of which were all standing around talking, instead of working). When I stopped their conversation to ask where a product was located, I was greeted with a a rude stare of shock that I dared to interrupt them. I excused myself, apologized for bothering their slacking on the job, and left the store. I won't spend my money on lazy people.

  • Shayne Negri

The young Hispanic lady lady taking returns was horrible, rude and would not help me with a simple return. I read their return policy and she was in the wrong, when I showed her their website and explained that there was no reason for her not to accept my return she became extremely rude and was furious so I simply left went to another Academy and reported that store to their headquarters. There was no reason for this. She needs to be fired...

  • Chris Goss

Went to pickup my online order and they said they did not have it, they told me that I must have ordered to pick up from another location. Went all the way back home, checked the confirmation email and it said that I was actually at the right place. Called up, guy said my item was sitting there in the right area for pick ups. Canceled my order, never going to this location again, very sloppy customer service.

  • Kevin McCue

Don't ever buy anything online from them... at least don't expect customer service or timely delivery. This is the worst online retailer out there. This store in particular had a chance to fix a problem and declined. Item shipped from pflugerville took 10 days to reach Manor. Customer service blamed me, fed ex , USPS, and traffic... REFUSED to own any of it. Avoid at all costs if you want your items timely!

  • Neghin

I went in April 6 th, I know its been a long time, but I needed to say how amazing James in the shoe department was. He was very helpful and kind when I had so many questions about soccer shoes for my son. Thank you so much for your help and time. And to the man that was greeting us at the door, thanks for the smile. They really seemed to like there job. Thank you again.

  • salseragirl

I had to ask him can he help me because he saw me standing there and didn't ask anything. I went to ask a question about a product online and I felt like he didn't want to be bothered. He didn't ask what it was incase they had it in the store. Just a simple, if you saw it online and not here we just don't have it. Very bad customer service.

  • BigRig George

Not to sure if it’s only my experience or idk but no one knew what to do with a pick up order or where anything was if it wasn’t the help of a guy who knew what he was doing from the gun section of the store not trying to be negative just don’t do a pickup order you’re just going to have to come and do everything yourself.

  • Jonathan Porras

What customer service? I was standing at the gun counter got no help. Nobody else was there. Then I finally asked for help and they didn't want to help me with a product and blew me off. One of the workers was Alex and the other was a male with a Bandana on. If you don't like customers then you need to find another job

  • Rich Allcorn

I was meeting someone in Academy, to help them with some things I need to get, and then and their cell service is not currently working. We were counting on Wi-Fi to hook up… But unlike most businesses in town, Academy sports does not offer free Wi-Fi for customers. [buzzer sound] “Thanks for playing.” (Game over)

  • James De Los Santos

Horrible horrible customer service. Jazmin Bradford is the worst customer service representative I have ever come across. She is horrible at her job, she does not take care of her community, she lies too. My encounter with her was unbelievable, I do not recommend Acadamy Sports and Outdoor because of her.

  • R2D2 173

The stock is a bit low right now but there was still a bunch of options. Didn't run into any staff but didn't need any help not sure if one would have been available if we did unfortunately they were out of what we needed. Shelves were messy and not always in the correct places other than that not bad.

  • AJ Ramirez

I know we're just following the holiday rush, but if you're looking for archery items I'm betting this isn't the place. A single, wholly depleted, and highly disorganized aisle was all I encountered... all while being serenaded by the cries of mice slowly dying in glue traps behind their target bags.

  • Giovanni Carbajal

Lucy and Beatrice went above and beyond to help me find some non slip work shows. Lucy taught me how to operate the Academy sports app to search for the shoes I wanted and size. Thereafter they grabbed a ladder and found the exact size I was looking for on the top shelf. Excellent customer service

  • Nan Jo

No overcrowding inside face mask seems to be a choice here I noticed at least 1 customer without a face mask also a checkout clerk. I needed another exercise ball walked in and out in no time, spacious definitely has the 6 feet apart rule. I did get approved for credit so that was a plus for me

  • Ess Tea

Spent over an hour waiting for a manager to show up to the gun counter to simply walk me out with an FFL transfer pick-up. Also, their website says FFL transfer fee is $30, but I was charged $60. When I asked why it was twice the price their website lists, I was told it changed a while ago...

  • Jered Becker

difficult to get to, only one entrance just south of anderson lane (183). coming from north, you have to go to st john ave and loop around to the south bound access road. since the only entrance is on ih 35 NB access road. coming south you exit 183 go past st johns anmd its on the right

  • Harry W

Usually this is a great store. Today I had a different experience getting a fishing license. The first staff member didn't know how to complete the sale. The second was not able to log in to the system. Finally, with the help of a third staff member I was able to get my fishing license.

  • Carlos Badillo

Most of the store was okay, but the shoe section was a mess. Shoe boxes left all over the place, some boxes with mixed sizes, or just straight up missing a shoe, and just generally unorganized. And this was with a couple employees walking around doing very little to help the situation.

  • Chris Kirksey

Was assisted within the first minute of getting there. Ditmar was super friendly, helpful and knowledgeable. I’m super happy with my purchase, and the whole experience overall. Thank you! Will be back again soon. Wish I came to this location sooner, they gotta get on Direction Local!

  • Big E

Very helpful guys in the guns and ammo section. They assisted in finding a holster for my new SCCY by letting me bring in my actual firearm (checked in at the door) and opened the [reclosable] package to ensure proper fit. Great experience both buying the gun and accessories.

  • Guadalupe Wilkinson

We went for fishing licenses and we bought more items. The prices are fair and the employees were very, very polite. Their bcg sport clothing is very comfortable and the colors are great! My husband is a disabled veteran and everyone was just full of attentions. Thank you!

  • Follow TcMacDesigns McCurry

Great place to find the baseball shirts I use for costumes! Parties, roll-play, any play! Helpful friendly staff... decent selection, great price! Look me up on Instagram @tcmacdesigns2015 or on Facebook under my name Tracy McCurry! I make lots of beautiful gifts!

  • Mss. Tisha

This store has great selection of shoes but I will never shop here again, trying to get someone attention or help it's difficult. Cause I was trying to get the employees attention and they kept walking like they didn't hear me or understand what I'm saying.

  • Cheryl Kaufman

Not the best Academy location. Inventory is low. Travel section is wiped out. Several items were not priced. Some items are of poor quality. But Lots of choices for back packs right now. And a folding chair for only $4.99 that I hope it will last a while.

  • Letitia Skloss

In and out in 5 minutes with everything I needed. Helpful employees. On task cashiers able to answer all my questions and even provided extra info! (Value add.) I will definitely be shopping here more! Also they have Austin Football Club stuff. Nice!!

  • Jarrod Stewart

Loaded up at academy with some new clothes on sale during the holiday season. Got all these clothes at great prices and can’t wait to go back next year. Staff was friendly and I got asked 4x if I needed help while walking around look at stuff to buy.

  • Matt Shaw

Phenomenal experience! Greeted by Gabby R and pointed me exactly where I need to go, who then paged Davi to meet me there and get the items I was looking for, and efficiently check out by Gabby L! Thanks for the help and great experience Academy!

  • Michael Forare

I ordered online, and I received a text that it was ready. The person was at the entrance helping customers, and she took my order number, went to get my order for me. I was walking to my car in less than 5 minutes. For me, it was quick that day.

  • Reid Connolly

The staff at this Academy are so friendly, and always welcoming to my dog and me. We always stop here to gear up before camping trips or other outdoor outings because the prices are much more reasonable than Dick's for store brand equipment.

  • Simon Nettleton

one of the better Academy stores. well organized and clean. I've been to some that look like my bedroom back in the day....like a tornado ran thru it....not this one! Great job management for making it easy to fine and locate items easily!!

  • Moses Villalobos

This ACADEMY SPORTS store had everything I needed and the employees there are very helpful. I recently purchased this here curlbar & two 25 lb. plates. I'm recovering from surgery which I sustained on 3 March so I'm starting off light!

  • Wilde Parry

This academy has decent sales and and okay selection. The staff are friendly, but the merchandising is terrible. Many things without price tags on the item or on the shelf and similar items in multiple areas of the store.

  • Jacob Creasy

Charges twice what they should for ammo. Stay away. Bought 2 boxes for the same price that walmart sells 4 boxes. Most of the ammo products also don't have proper tags and they don't accept returns after ripping you off.

  • Harsh Patel

Staff is not readily available for help. Also, products seemed to be a bit used and not new.So basically they are selling used equipments as new. However, I like their price match policy against Amazon and a 60 day return.

  • Fair Skylls (Monbonica)

Academy consistently has way better deals with way better quality than you think it would. It's worth it to take the trip and find something better here than you can online. Trust. PS, Management rocks and knows stuff.

  • Shawn Kendell

Just like Best Buy, when you really NEED someone to help you find something, it’s a ghost town. Otherwise the same 3 employees of the month repeatedly pester you like you ain’t got the app open already.. …

  • Black Orina

horrible place to be employed at! They dont care about employees safety, they put themselves first before anything! would not recommend working here, unless you want to be treated horrible and with no respect!

  • Business Travels

This academy was very well organized, neat displays. Good customer service. Easy to find products. Restrooms clean and nice and bright lighting in store. As well as clean outside of the store and parking lot.

  • Robert Kengle

Great selection of shoes and easy returns. Price here is as good as most online prices. The four stars is for guy working the shoe department he steered me to what he liked instead of what I was requested.

  • Anna Rodriguez

It was good no sales woke following u around like u stole something or going to as soon as I walk in the door. Just a little messy with trash everywhere in shoe dept I guess they were remodeling not sure.

  • May Hernandez (Moving Squad)

I have to say everything about the store was great. My 1-Star deduction was thanks to the bad attitude of the African American lady taking care of fitting rooms (7:40p). If you dont like your job, quit.

  • Maria Deysi Aviles

I’ve been there a few times lately, they have a lovely staff. One male in the bikes for kids area was so friendly to me and my family last time we were inthere! Bless his heart! Thanks for staying open.

  • Eric Bergfield

Great store, I've shopped here probably 4 times in the past 3 years. Lots of clothing variety, and their prices don't break the bank - even their firearms are normal prices (crazy right, even in 2021).

  • Brian H

Everybody was great. I would definitely go back to the store with no issues at all and give him my business all day long. The associate and the manager we're very helpful I do appreciate that...

  • Rachel

I've noticed that while employees seem friendly and the store is clean and organised, the stock, particularly in the camping section has been pretty low lately. All in all, a good experience.

  • Deja Cooper

Helpful staff.. we've been in regularly these days since all 3 of my children are in sports and we are always helped in a timely matter with kindness. Found exactly what we needed each time.

  • April McDowell

Disappointing to say the least. Turns out they had exactly what we needed but we couldn't be bothered to help. Turned off the call button in front of us then told us that's not what he did.

  • Michael Thibodeaux

Needed slip resistant work shoes and was surprised to see so many in stock at such a good price. To anyone in need of good work shoes soon this would be the first place I would check.

  • Adam Prado

Supplies all my grilling needs. Tons of variety and as of late, they have been out of stock of quite a bit of stuff, probably due to the pandemic. But great prices for great product.

  • Lo

Picked up an online order here. Everyone was nice and helped me out. They have to verify order number and may ask for ID when picking up. Plenty of parking, lots of products.

  • Courtney Hosea

It's a nice store and the employees are super friendly. Overall, the bathrooms were nice and clean...and I got some sleeping bags for $10. It was a pretty solid trip.

  • Andrea K

A decent location that is very organized. Doesn't seem to have the variety that other Austin locations have. Their fishing selection is really good though.

  • Robbin Dexter

Davi was a crismatic woman she even helped me carry my huge products and loaded them in my truck for me wonderful person, we'll go back again!

  • TimeKeeper Media
