I've always thought that the Alma Hotel was a nice country pub especially in the historic town of Willunga, that is until I had a lunch there this week. Very unimpressed. I don't like leaving negative reviews but this was definitely a bad experience. The interior was reasonably presented, the floors nicely polished wood, historical ceilings in the front of the dining area was nice as well. In the dining area the bar/order area was old and daggy the ceiling as well. You could partially see the kitchen and the vibe was one of unease - as though WHS is not followed here. This unease was followed by a kitchen worker sneezing quite loudly. Our meals arrived - customer service was poor, not what I would expect for a country pub, not like the Aldinga pub or the Strathalbyn pub at all. Where's the friendly banter... my fish had bones - it wasn't supposed to, the arancini balls were the worst I have ever had at a restaurant AND they came with a free hair! The sticky chilli sauce was nice though. The garlic bread was also good. The menu was limited - from what I could see no vegan or vego options. The desserts sounded nice The front bar area also looked nice. I left feeling quite urrky and I won't be back anytime soon.

Have been here multiple times and the food has always been slightly above average. Obviously with a few bad outliers every so often but that's normal for most pubs. However, they have changed their menu to be more fancy. Ordered the only steak on the menu House cut, chips and salad (requested chips and salad). Supposed to be rump steak. Ended up getting a thick chunk of essentially dog food. It was the worst cut of beef I have ever seen. I managed to slice a 1cm bite out of it and the rest was cooked as requested but it was all gristle. No joke. It wasn't a little bit of gristle, the ENTIRE cut was gristle. So for $35 I received a chips and salad with a chunk of beef no one would eat. The chips were great. Salad was seasoned and dressed well Steak.... I say dog food but frankly I wouldn't even feed that to my dog. The last time. Pre menu change. The steak was fantastic. My favourite local establishment. That has changed and most likely will not be coming back unless I hear about significant improvements. Service 9/10 Atmosphere 6/10 Food 1/10

Went back to the Alma for the first time in nearly ten years expecting to see some change as my previous experience wasn't very good. To my surprise it was more of the same. I had a beef schnitzel with the Aussie topping. The schnitzel itself was okay. A little burnt around the edges of the batter but it wasn't bad. The topping consists of barbecue sauce, cheese, bacon and an egg atop the affair. Thankfully the egg was perfectly cooked and this was definitely pleasing to eat. For the rest of the dish unfortunately, the pieces didn't compliment each other well. The barbecue sauce was extremely thin almost like the consistency of soy sauce. It was quite sweet also and didn't have the familiar taste of other barbecue sauces. The cheese was tasty and i don't have a lot to complain about it other than it seemed to be of poor quality as it began separating into the primary cheese substance and a small patch of oil on my schnitzel. My only last complaint was that the bacon was cooked way too far and very dry. Overall the food was edible but not something I would go back to.

Family occassion today at this great pub! Staff were polite and accommodating, great menu and fantastic service. Special thanks to "on the ball" barman Daniel. Great place to have a Guiness, few places left these days! Will definitely go there again when the opportunity arises. Thanks heaps Alma Hotel. Spent a few hours here on 17th March 2023 for st Patrick's Day. Guinness was an astonishing $8.00 for an imperial pint! Well done Alma as a close "Irish" themed pub was selling the same at a rip off $14.50. We had a good time here, staff were very efficient and friendly especially the young man who brought our pints out front. Whole place was clean and tidy. Other establishments should have a look at these toilets and see that it is not hard to make this area clean, presentable, well lit, well decorated and hygienic. I can highly recommend this establishment and look forward to my next visit.

The staff are amazing and atmosphere is welcomed with wood fires ind each room. My only concers was with the preparation of food from the chief. It needs twigging of the portions presented on the plates. Salads needs cucumber and tomatos etc. The chicken and beef was half to what you normally get at other restaurants Australia wide. Chips although very well cooked needs to be better proportioned, just add a little more. For the prices or a 4 to 5 star restaurant in a heritage pub we were expecting a meal to match. Will come back just feel the chief needs to execute the meals to a higher standard.

It's not very often that you get greeted when you enter a pub these days, so to be greeted by 3 separate staff as we walked in and found a table made us instantly feel at home. Great service, good meal sizes and no overinflated prices. Would definitely come back again next time we're in the area. You can't go wrong with this classic country pub.

Ordered takeaway chips with a side of gravy....:: (How hard is that???) , Chips were cold & raw...the gravy was on the chips instead of being on the side... stone cold gravy on the raw chips...never ordering again...very poor effort alma.!!!!! Edit:- In response to your post regarding my lack of attendance, there’s a good reason for that, being your lack of good service....I wouldn’t recommend anyone to eat from there. The last beef snitzel I had was swimming in oil, Had a pathetic excuse of a ‘salad’ Thankfully got my money refunded because you knew how bad it was

Great old pub, been totally refurbished.Staff are very helpful and greet you with a smile.Food is great and prices are very affordable.Large bars with many varieties of beer and spirits.Huge venue area with lots of seating.Plenty of car parking spaces. They have a ramp into the hotel if you are in a wheelchair.Very clean toilets. The hotel is situated in a gum tree lined street with an air of grace due to the hotels age, which dates back to 1856.You should head down for a meal and an icy cold beer meet the staff and enjoy your day.

  • Linda Pinnell

I love the building and the staff and floorboards! Carparking is EXCELLENT plentiful and free. We were a biggish group and ordered right before 2pm. Three of our chicken meals were returned due to pink and uncooked in parts...one other chicken meal got returned also due to the diner being too queasy to eat it due to the state of the other chicken dishes. Money was refunded by the establishment thankyou. Beer was delicious. I will come back again because i loved other aspects of the Hotel.

My daughter had her wedding reception at the Alma and the staff were professional and helpful. They delivered on everything they promised and the attention to detail was perfect. The food was excellent and plenty of it. Could not fault a thing which made the night memorable and enjoyable. Would highly recommend anyone having a wedding to consider having it at the Alma. Big thank you to all the staff, especially Melinda who ensured the night was a success.

  • David Pyatt (Dave)

Fantastic lunch for two. We arrived almost on kitchen closing time on Sunday afternoon. The staff where more than happy to organise us lunch with no dramas or issues. It was great to see the dinning room staff thoroughly clean the tables and chairs between sittings and they where polite and happy. So many times I have been turned away at other venues in the city as the 'kitchen is closing soon!' Will definitely drop in again for a feed. Thank you

  • Frank Austin

Attended a large function but the staff didn't know how to coordinate with the function organisers as to what should be served at what time. Fish and chips meal came with roast dinner vegetables which arrived stone cold (salad would have been a better choice). Ice cream was served in melted state (served out too early).

Just at the Alma and had placed in front of me after an extended waiting time a meal they called Roast Beef. More like roast offal with a little bit of meat. Roast veggies were raw. Sent the meal back as it should never have been served to a paying customer. Staff did not even offer an appology for the excuse of a meal. If I could give it a negative score I would.

Top spot for a decent Pub Lunch. Airy atmosphere...fantastic means like the 3 Bangers and Mash with Caramelised Onions...actually crispy...yahhhy!! And some crispy salad greens. The ladies had several big Prawns marinaded with Tequila and lime. We topped that off with a Great Northern Beer

  • Michael Bosman

I was impressed with this place. Soups were good. Meat was cooked well. Vegetables were beautifully done, very moist and full of flavor. Salad was good which so many places get wrong amazingly. Drinks weren't over priced either and staff were friendly. I'd recommend this place any day.

  • Ben Michael (Benny M)

Food was relatively good with plenty of options for gluten free and vegetarians. Small area for kids to play with toys which is great, but overall it's a very dated facility. It feels like you're really in the country, but everything was clean and there's plenty of car parking!

  • Mick Todd

Very friendly staff but the whole place needs an upgrade. Meals weren’t up to scratch either. Asked for battered fish in the seafood basket but could only get crumbed yet you get to choose with the fish and chips. This suggests the seafood is frozen from supermarket boxes.

  • Bob Pratt

Went for lunch with group of 30, first and last time l ll eat there, chicken Switzerland was burnt and meat sweaty, obviously dumped into hot fat. Salad was well past its use by date and l ll never eat there again Several of our group had a similar experience

  • Sue Walding

Had the Korean burger that wasn't. No taste of anything Korean. No Kimchi, Korean chilli sauce, there was about 2 drops of chipotle sauce but at the end of the day it was just an average chicken burger

Returning after a long absence we were disapointed to say the least, the vaunted huge salad bar was typical pub lunch style, quite a few flies buzzing it, as they were our food, we could only eat one handed. We had pork, one of the more

Busy place on a Saturday night! I dropped in for some quick dinner and a pint to get out of the cold and enjoyed the mix of locals at the bar and atmosphere. Not sure about mixing an old fashioned with lemon instead of orange though :)
