Thoroughly disappointed with our visit to the American bar this Saturday afternoon. The venue operates a walk-in policy. This is what is stated on their website " This bar operates a walk in policy. A limited number of online reservations are available for up to two people only" We arrived at 5pm and asked for a counter table for 2 at the bar...the hostess checked and said that was fine but we could only have the seat for 1.5 hours instead of the normal 2, we agreed to this as this visit has been on my top 10 list for a while, I couldn't believe my luck. Eagerly, we were taken to the bar and once again reminded we had till 6.30pm to enjoy the bar "experience," and Jamie would look after us. Jamie did indeed acknowledge us promptly and asked us what we would like, as we only had 1.5 hours we decided to order a bottle of LP rose champagne and then we had asked Jamie to recommend us a cocktail for afterwards. Jamie was polite and professional, opened our champagne, and made polite chit chat, after 15 mins, he informed us he was going on his break. We then attempted to chat to his cover, which was more of a challenge, but I was currently happy with my surroundings. I started to look through the cocktail menu eagerly awaiting Jamie's return for him to recommend us a cocktail as previously discussed. At 5.20pm the hostess that seated us came over and said she had made a mistake and the booking she had told us about was for 3 people and was infact at 6pm so we would have to move at 6pm to a lower table somewhere in the bar. We were only halfway through our bottle champagne and waiting for the anticipated promised bar "experience" to kick in. So our 2 hour slot had now been chopped in half, we hadn't really felt like we'd had an exceptional wow experience, when the final straw was the hostess returned once again at 5.50pm to tell me the booking of 3 people had arrived early and we need to move now.......my wife still had half a glass of champagne to drink and we hadn't even ordered our cocktails yet. We were made to stand up and start moving, if we had been given till 6pm we could have finished our bottle of champagne instead we were hussled out like we shouldnt be there. This was a disgusting way to treat a paying guest. The hostess handled the whole situation very poorly, so what we actually received was 50 mins and no wow factor. We were over promised and under delivered. The Savoy has a reputation for putting its guests first and prides themselves on customer service.....or so I thought. Wow, how wrong was I. I've travelled and dined in first class establishment's all over the world, and this by far was the biggest letdown. I did speak with the bar manager on the evening, and he attempted to rectify my experience. He removed the service charge and moved us to a table in the Beaufont bar for a round of complimentary drinks. The service in there was brilliant, and we were finally looked after, we stayed for another cocktail, but it was too little too late. I spent well over £200 with you and was ready to spend more. But I couldn't get over the way we had been treated in the American bar. I shall choose the Ritz next time we are in London. Our experiences previously at the Ritz have been nothing but outstanding and memorable for all the corect reasons. In this current cost of living crisis and volatile climate, you should be very careful when working in the hospitality industry how you treat people wanting to spend their money with you. The guest is looking for that experience and wow factor, especially in a premium venue like the Savoy. This experience has left a very bad taste in my mouth, and I have lost my faith in the Savoy. I hope the 3 guests that booked and sat at the bar at 6 pm got treated better than we did.

The American Bar at The Savoy is a world-renowned cocktail bar that has been serving up delicious drinks and classic atmosphere since 1893. The bar is located in the heart of London's theater district, and it's a popular spot for pre-theater drinks or a night out on the town. The American Bar is known for its extensive cocktail list, which features both classic and modern drinks. The bar staff are experts in their craft, and they're always happy to help you choose the perfect cocktail for your taste. In addition to its great cocktails, The American Bar is also known for its elegant atmosphere. The bar is decorated in a classic Art Deco style, and it features plush leather chairs, dark wood paneling, and crystal chandeliers. The bar is also home to a beautiful marble bar, which is the perfect place to sit and enjoy a drink. We recently visited The American Bar with a few work friends, and we had a wonderful experience. The cocktails were delicious, the atmosphere was elegant, and the service was excellent. We were also lucky enough to meet Gordon Ramsay, who was visiting his restaurant. He was very friendly and down-to-earth, and he took the time to chat with us and was happy to have a selfie with us. Overall, we had a fantastic time at The American Bar. It's a great place to go for a special occasion or a night out with friends. The cocktails are delicious, the atmosphere is elegant, and the service is excellent. We highly recommend it. Here are some specific details about our experience: * The cocktails were delicious. We tried the Burning Bright, which is made with grapefruit, Amaro Montenegro, and lime, and the Tuxedo Royale, which is made with gin, vodka, and champagne. Both cocktails were perfectly made and very flavorful. * The atmosphere was elegant. The bar is decorated in a classic Art Deco style, and it features plush leather chairs, dark wood paneling, and crystal chandeliers. The bar is also home to a beautiful marble bar, which is the perfect place to sit and enjoy a drink. * The service was excellent. The bar staff were very friendly and knowledgeable, and they were happy to help us choose the perfect cocktails for our taste. * We were also lucky enough to meet Gordon Ramsay, who was having a drink at the bar. He was very friendly and down-to-earth, and he took the time to chat with us and give us some advice on the best cocktails to order. We highly recommend The American Bar to anyone looking for a special night out or a delicious cocktail.

Service - I thought the people who manages the place is not quite efficient. Why? They made people wait for 45 minutes before ushering them to the table when the place has 40% empty tables. I don't see the need to do this as for what, exclusivity purposes? It makes the bar look exceptionally pretentious. However, the staffs in the bar itself were nice. Our server was a really nice guy who attended to all our questions and constantly have a smile on his face. Drinks - Very good variety of drinks, it feels like a journey drinking in this bar with stories and fairytales. Each drink has a little story which makes them a little bit more interesting as compared to regular bars. A lot of effort is put in to every drink - with odd coasters, some preserved fruits or spraying something on the drinks in front of us. It somehow made me feel that it's the show that got them to be so highly ranked. It depends on how you view it - some people will think the show is too much (I'm one of them), some would think that this is why they are so highly ranked. For me, I just want my drink with less shows. Good effort though. Try Gilbert Rumbold, a very light and refreshing drink to start off. The vintage cocktail page is really interesting I thought. Possibily the only bar to my knowledge, serves such alcohol and also with that pricetag. Ambience - There was some jazz performance going on that night, too noisy for a proper conversation.... Overall - All in all, I thought it could be better experience to visit if the bar is less busy. It made me feel they cannot cater to the crowd... I somehow like it quiet and classy instead of noisy and just too gimmicky. Will definitely return on a less busier day so staff's attention is less divided and when wait time is no longer than 15 minutes.

I’ve personally been in many of the top bars all across the globe and they’ve never failed (dead rabbit, artesian, elephant bar, tales&spirits, dandelyan, happiness forgets, door 74, PDT, employees only, red frog,... and the list continues). This place is definitely immaculate, historical and with a good vibe, the pianist gives a very cool touch to the all experience. The cocktail menu is interesting and the way they approach it is very different and worth to read the menu beginning to end. Now what you really come for... cocktails... expensive, too expensive for what they are! Weak in taste, unbalanced and flavors are strong on the alcohol note and not on the ingredients that are displayed on the menu... this as obviously my experience, considering they are currently one of the top bars in the world, I don’t want to destroy what they do, but again, my experience in the cocktails and service was poor! I wasn’t served water at my arrival, which I guess that optional from bar to bar, but it’s probably one of the first time this happened. The bar was almost empty when I arrived, even the staff was commenting between themselves, but still took over 15 minutes to take my order and another 15 for my drink! Felt disappointed considering the amount paid and the overall drink experience, wouldn’t come back and unfortunately I can’t recommend, compared to the better options around town!

I was curious to visit the iconic American Bar at the Savoy so when in town i went with a few friends to check it out. We arrived with no reservations and were seated on a saturday night very quickly, we only had to wait for about 5 minutes. The ambiance of the place is not stellar, i was expecting something out of this world but it was pretty toned down with live piano music in the middle of the main room. Once we were seated we were give an "book" containing the menu, it was intimidating at first but soon after I opend it i saw a very easy to navigate list of cocktails and vintage cocktails, it even has a graph that helps you zero in to the type of cocktail that you might be interested in. The service was phenomenal, it was quick, it was helpful, and in no time at all we were served some very tasty snack that go very well with the cocktails. I ordered the "Sinatra's Stage" a cocktail based on single barrel Jack Daniel's Bourbon, creamy, whiskey sour like, very creative and pleasing, i recommend it very much. My wife ordered the Googly, a cocktail based of Gin, very well executed. I didn't give it the 5 stars mostly due to the ambiance but the cocktails are well worth the visit. There are some excentric vintage cocktails that you ight want to try if you feel up to spending up to 5000 pounds on a single cocktail. cheers!

Let me start by saying that I respect Ms Tebay’s work back from the Death and Co days and that I’m very much aware that this incarnation of the bar has only been open for a week. My issues were with service, not with the drinks. It’s sad you can’t sit at the bar anymore. If you emphatically ask to sit near the bar, it’s sad if you end up in a different room. There’s no real reason why there’s a tedious “spelling your complete name” ceremony, when that name is never mentioned again. Generally, servers are nice enough, but without a real personal connection, which, again, might be too much for ask for after a week. Finally, it’s weird to be asked about a reservation when the web site expressively says there aren’t any. Makes you feel like a second class guest right away. My drink was competently made and well thought out. Of course, it was about ten pounds too much in terms of quality, but these things have to be taken into account when you’re at the Savoy. I won’t be, for the foreseeable future, though.

We had the most wonderful experience at The American Bar. I had put on the booking that we were there for our 20th Wedding anniversary, and all the staff were so polite and all were wishing us congratulations. A complimentary glass of champagne and a small desert on a plate with "Happy 20th Anniversary" writing on was also a lovely touch. A great sofa table by the bar added to the ambience for us. Our waiter Nathan was extremely helpful with the wine, and the Provence we chose was divine. Olives and crisps were lovely too. The pianist was great, and took requests so brownie points for me getting our wedding song played. Overall an absolute pleasure to be there. Made to feel so welcome, and everybody should try this bar. You feel at home here, and it really starts you're evening off just right. We'll done everyone. Thank you for having us. Paul & Becky.

The American Bar was smaller than expected. A mirrored chrome and teak wood establishment. It was very busy at 5pm and their seating system wasn't the most customer friendly. However, I couldn't fault the cooperation of the front of house staff and appreciate seating 6 is not easy when turnover is pressed. Waiter service was good. I can't comment on the drinks as we didn't take anything unusual. In fact, most people we saw were taking beer, wine and ordinary mixers, which might be a taste preference or it might be a cost issue. It is open to non-residents. Hint / Tip - the bar was empty at 2.30pm, so a post lunch cocktail looks a safer bet to avoid disappointment.

Legendary comes to mind. It is a beautifully decorated bar with history and the kind of service that if you are under 40 you probably haven’t experienced outside of five star hotels. Be warned, such opulence comes at a price. You would expect to pay north of £26 for a drink when you are at a hard-to-get-in speak easy or a cocktail lounge on a roof with a view, but not a stuffy hotel with very inventive menus. It is very nice, but it is geared towards what younger generations are looking for. There is no trendy scene, fancy view or super talented instagram ready mixologist behind the bar. Just a famous address with beautiful, but outdated, decorations. Skip if you are visiting London, but worth the visit to take clients and business associates.

One of the best cocktail bars in the world. All drinks are top-notch here. There are only four places at the bar counter but it totally worth wait to get a free one. Watching for cocktails making by that good bartenders is astounding. You can spend 3 hours without notice just talking to barmen and trying to taste every cocktail in their menu. Snacks are free and unlimited that is a nice bonus considering expensive drinks there. Excellent service, all crew members are friendly, professional and always ready to help with any questions you may have. It's a famous place so book in advance or be ready to wait for some time to be seated. Waiting time is negligible if you are alone or two people only but may be longer for larger parties.

My wife and I were really looking forward to visiting The American bar at your beautiful hotel as a special treat . We ordered our cocktails , and were very disappointed when they arrived ( one of the cocktails was wrong so went back ) waited another 10 minutes until we actually got the right one . We both ordered different cocktails but they arrived in quite ordinary Slim Jim glasses , not much garnish and very ordinary. We have both been in hospitality for many years and would never leave a bad review but we felt so disappointed and expected better .

To Nathan, Thank you for serving me on a Friday night, 1 Sep. The martini with a lemon twist was just what I needed. You have been most courteous and friendly. All the best and see you there soon! To Jonny, You made my time in American Bar that much more pleasant with your approach and willingness to tell me everything I wanted to know and more. I'll come back some time soon to tell you more about cars and Croatia! Will try some recipes from the book!

Having been voted the best bar in the world not once but twice, you would expect exceptional service and quality. The bar does not disappoint. The signature cocktails are different, top ingredients and paired with photos of the stars from Bowie to Sinatra - it's a flavour journey, though, in truth, neither your liver nor bank balance could manage more than a short walk! There are no reservations here so evening arrivals will have to wait - sometimes up to an hour but there is always the museum to peruse and, of course, other bars are available.

It was my girlfriends birthday on Thursday and for a special treat we nipped into the American Bar for a late nightcap. We had a truly sublime time. Had a Cognac French 75 (one of her all time favourites) and a Jaberwocky Sour, both delicious. The atmosphere was perfect, low lighting, comfy seats and a talented pianist playing. The service was attentive but remained unobtrusive. Chelsie was a particular delight. All in all, a wonderful night. Would recommend to anyone willing to listen.

The staff were very welcoming and the drinks were great (worth the price !). They have a brilliant cocktail menu. I went with a group of friends and the bartender explained the story and the ingredients of each one of our cocktails. And the presentation, just WOW ! Beautiful and original. The bartender was really friendly and helpful, recommending cocktails based on your tastes. Service was absolutely exceptional from the beginning. It’s pricey but you have to go there at least once in your life.

My family and I have been here twice, both times before dining at the Savoy Grill. Upon arrival we were warmly invited to sit down- they have a variety of plush couches and chairs which are very comfortable and classy. There is also grand piano in the centre of the room that a gentleman was playing softly whilst we were there. The cocktail list is absolutely huge, complete with some extraordinarily expensive vintage cocktails. Overall I love the experience and ambience of American Bar.

To be seated where the characters that made history have sat is pretty amazing, and to see the level of detail that they put to the service I'd amazing. Their olives were really good, and no joke their bar staff, it's so attentive that not for a moment they stopped re filling them. It's a tiny detail, but it's was just impressive to see them

Sadly will never be able to try the Sazerac but there's plenty of others to choose from. Staff lovely to chat to. Relaxing atmosphere, will always be my favourite place. Had drinks here again 21st February during the afternoon. Great place to meet, chat & relax. Will come for a bar meal next time, the burger looked delicious. As always, staff impeccable. 40 years since I was a message clerk here, and where we took calls & messages for guests is now 2 beautiful lifts !!

Unbelievable. As a cocktail enthusiast it was a dream to have a few drinks at the American Bar, but I couldn't even imagine an experience like this. Jamie went above and beyond what I'd consider above and beyond. I genuinely don't think better service exists than what I was given that night. Sure, it's expensive, but you can skip a dozen inferior cocktail bars and spend that money here and it's beyond worth it.

We finally managed to get in the American Bar after having a meal in the River Restaurant (see separate review). What an amazing experience. Michele looked after us so well and made us feel very comfortable, so comfortable in fact we ended up spending nearly £400 on cocktails... But to be expected. If you can get in, it's well worth it, but bear in mind they prioritise guests over 'walk ins', so you might have to go on a waiting list. We waited about 25 minutes.

Cool cosy spot for after dinner or after theatre drinks, in one of London's classic hotels. Classy cocktails but they also do the off menu "classics" if you ask nicely, like long island ice tea. Suggest a booking if you're more than a couple (we were thankfully accommodated when we did not plan ahead for post theatre spot). Prices are a bit higher, but a great experience. Live pianist was talented (don't forget to tip)

Spectacular (and spectacularly expensive) cocktails at this art deco Gatsby hotel bar. Loved the live piano player and the great service. Inventive drinks - I had a perfect gin martini and a gin highball made with nori, celery bitters and grapefruit soda that was light, savory and refreshing. There was also a 5000 GBP shot of whiskey but we passed on that one.

The ambience of The American bar is first class and the staff very attentive. We have visited this bar several times. however today I ordered a rum cocktail which was a staggering £23.00 BUT it consisted of mainly the biggest ice cube I have ever seen almost filling the whole tumbler glass (not even a cocktail glass) hardly any cocktail to drink

Rude and unwelcoming. You cannot drink in this bar unless you wait 90 minutes for a table or you are a resident of the hotel. It’s really not worth the wait either - there are many much better options like Corinthia and Sofitel St James. Just avoid it if you can!

Another fantastic experience in the American Bar! This time for my 'special' birthday. Warmly welcomed and made to feel like much valued guests as soon as we arrived. A particular mention for Isaac (and fellow northerner) who truly went out of his way to deliver the Savoy Service. Also the pianist, who is brilliant. Until next time!

Highly recomend visiting this place but its not for the cost conscious that's for sure. We had a great table near the pianist who has a great chilled out voice. The drinks are beautiful and the vibe just relaxed and chilled and now and again you get to see the odd worst for wear Celebrity! One of my new favourite places in London.

Lovely experience definitely something special. The history of the place is amazing and I felt like a luxury experience. The staff were very attentive and knew the menu inside out. Cocktails were delicious too. Around £20 for a cocktail. Complimentary snacks were given which is definitely a bonus. Would recommend!

Possibly the best martini I’ve ever had… dry Botanist with a twist. The nuts and olives were delicious and a great complement to the martinis! We got there right before the piano player started and he was wonderful, playing and singing lots of classic jazz pieces. What a lovely bar and a great experience!

Great musical concept, carried through throughout the bar. From coasters in the form of records, a songbook menu with drinks named after classic songs, and a live pianist bringing the music to life. Prices are steep, but you come to expect that at the world’s number 2 bar.

Use to be a great place to take people from out of town or to grab a drink before a show, use to be Art Deco, but now it’s remodeled and it’s like every other nice overpriced bar- nothing special. Go to Dukes for a Bar with character, The Savoy has lost all charm.

Service and cocktails absolutely lovely, but I have to say (personal opinion here) the aesthetic feels cheap with the carpet and textured wallpaper taking their cue from a cineplex, when this space should really be the epitome of London elegance and style.

Used to love this place. Now it is just grim. Overpacked, nothing to recommend it really. Sad it has lost its fabulousness.

Like stepping back in time in style and service. Although I doubt Churchill or Agatha Christie wore athleisure when they drank the world famous cocktails here. Still sets a high bar for what a cocktail can be.

Popped in for a drink before dining in The Savoy grill restaurant. Great bar. Brilliant cocktail menu. Cocktails were fantastic and the staff were friendly and helpful. A must for pre-dining drinks.
