If you're looking to have a good night out with friends, do not go to Azar. The club was initially called Tokio, but was re-branded into what is now Azar - a supposedly higher-end club and lounge although the venue itself is in one of the dodgiest and worst possible locations in Durban. Several muggings and gunfights have happened outside the club, and fights inside occur on the regular. Staff The security are rude and corrupt (my friends have bribed them to get into the venue on busy nights) and have an aura of arrogance despite their social standing. The latter can also be said about the owners, whom are arrogant and abrupt towards their patrons. They do not seem to realise that the people that go to their club are the same people that fund their lifestyles - so expect to be treated like rubbish. The hostility is greatly unwarranted. It is the biggest turn-off about this place actually, and the reason why I am writing this review. Entrance They have a rule that only couples and females may enter the club, so if you're a group of guys just looking to have fun, expect to wait at least an hour to get in (if you get in at all). Furthermore, entrance fees are at a minimum of R100 and can go up to R200+, which is ridiculous. Crowd & atmosphere In brutal honesty, the crowd itself is lacklustre and, more often than not, there will be a fight at this venue as I've said before. People tend to stand idle around the dance-floor, and don't seem to be enjoying themselves. I have seen people on drugs in this club. Alcohol Drink prices are as per usual, so around R20+ for a beer or cider, and R40/R50 for double vodka and mixture. Conclusion If you're a concerned parent wanting to know about where your child is going, a tourist, or anyone for that matter wanting to know about this club, you shouldn't ever consider entering or letting your child enter this venue. With all things taken into consideration, you are definitely better off spending your money elsewhere. Although a vast majority of my mates go there as it is popular, I will not in future. Plainly, I refuse to support this venture. A much better alternative around the area, with a better crowd, experience and safer environment would be Tiger Tiger, which is in close proximity. TL;DR The security and owners are arrogant and think they're God's, the location is dangerous, and crowd is woeful. The club itself is overpriced. Don't waste your time here, rather spend your money elsewhere, you'll have a much better time.
If you want to be treated badly and humiliated, go to this club. The bouncers and security at this club are extremely rude, vile and disrespectful. Told us that the club was full and refused to let us in yet they let in about 100 people in during the time that we waited outside in the cold. The bouncers are very biased towards "certain" people, they use foul language and swear at people and as an establishment that attracts paying customers, this is absolutely not the way to be treated. This club is vile and whoever the owner is, needs to re evaluate if this the way it wants its customers to be treated. Absolutely disgusting service and I will be spreading the word about the bouncers. It does not do well as an establishment to have a terrible reputation with customers service, even if you are a club. Disgusting!
Pathetic service at the door with the most arrogant security. Was out for a night with friends (none of us reside in Durban). The security had a nerve to tell us that we are too old to get in (he never asked for our ID). When asked what the age limit is, he said it was a night for 18-21 only. He then let in much older people a few minutes later. Being a frequent traveller and having lived abroad for many years, I have experienced many places across the globe and this has been the worst by far. Service and attitude go a long a way. I will definitely not recommend this place to anyone, including expats and tourists who want to experience night life in Durban as this place gives night life in Durban a sour taste.
I have been there one Friday and I spent a nice evening. Good music, nice People and so on. I came back on Saturday and in a very very bad mode on man of safety staff didn't allow me to enter taking the excuse that the entrance is restricted to the couples. I don't know if is True but sure a so nice place deserve more friendly staff specially towards the customers who spend a lot of money without disturbing any one. I am in this country since 3 years and i didn't received a treatment like this. I am sorry but teach to the staff in service at the entrance of this nice place how to perform with the customers.
I had a small complaint so I spoke to the guy in charge, he seriously went way beyond my expectations. He really made a girls night out a memorable and amazing one. I would definitely recommend this place if you want to go out to have a dance - It's an elite nightclub, there's good music, many different events, a great atmosphere and people that are willing to assist if you are not happy - now that is excellent customer service!! Just one tip to future customers: Find out about the event of the night first and that will make your experience worth while. Thank you AZAR
This field does not allow for enough characters for me to describe how pathetic this place and it's staff is. Find another venue. There's many more out there deserving of your money.
It seems your patronage is only good for selected nights and feature functions dependent on the maturity of the crowd which is measured on a personal scale by security.
This place sucks. Been there twice and was not allowed in, even as a couple. What exactly is the criteria to enter. Its all about status.
It's a great place nonetheless but its a bit pricey and very upmarket and the people can be uptight can't really fully turn up...
As a performer they had no idea I was performing. Door lady was unprepared and unfriendly. No change at the bar...
Social evenings are a good mix of crowd in age, live music, party atmosphere
Dress code does apply.! Great atmosphere but can get rowdy. Stylfull.
Terrible queues. Literally not even worth the wait when you get in.
