Steve Lang was recommended to me by a friend. I asked Steve to install a hydraulic seat post on my mountain bike, a job which he had previously done on another bike that I own. Upon inspecting my bike (an Orange 5) and having assessed the design of my frame, Steve informed me that the installation would be more technical than the initial install had been, and thus more costly. The problem lay in how to internally route the gear cable which would actuate the dropper post. After initially leaving my bike with Steve for the upgrade to be undertaken, I had a a think about the problem that he had presented, and recalled having seen a GMBN Youtube video presented by Neil Donoghue which demonstrated a method of installing the cable which was by using a magnetised telescopic rod to move the cable internally through the tubes. When I suggested this idea to Steve he became very angry and told me "DON'T TELL ME HOW TO DO MY JOB, I'VE DONE THIS A HUNDRED TIMES BEFORE, I'VE BEEN RUNNING THIS BUSINESS FOR 10 YEARS... (in a teenager's sulky tone!)". After Steve's sulk, I took my bike to a second mechanic, Carl. Now, Carl isn't Cytec qualified and hasn't been running a bicycle repair business for ten years, and so has no experience of installing a dropper post on a bike. Yet, despite this, he was able to use the suggested method to install the dropper post, and guess what? It works!!! It actually works !!! + I saved £20. All without the attitude that I got from Steve. Oh, one final thought... You know how Steve was initially recommended to me by a friend? Well, I spoke to my friend again, and he informed me that he had had his doubts about Steve when he had first met him. Well, thanks for not mentioning that sooner, mate. Update following Steve's response: Steve's first point boils down to the (misguided) idea that I TOLD him what to do, as appose to making a friendly suggestion, which is how I see it. As far as I'm concerned, the whole episode that Steve describes played out in his head rather than in reality, and I've discussed this issue with Steve in person, but he refuses to accept my truth. Even if it is as Steve believes it to be, tell me, why would you, the customer, willingly pay £20 extra to have the bottom bracket removed in order to install a hydraulic seat post, when a tool bought for £2.95 and used by a competent mechanic would make it possible to entirely bypass this step? Steve, there is a distinct difference between knowledge and skill, and knowing how to do a job having observed it being done by a professional does not equate to having the competency and confidence to undertake the job oneself. For example, I understand how Michelangelo painted the Sistine Chapel, but that doesn't mean that I possess the technical skills to do it myself, does it? So, I'm trusting that by now Steve has seen my update, and my friend, Kris's, validity has been proven, so, I'm removing his personal details from the record. "Hours on the phone and in the workshop " B/S You're having a laugh, right??? Oh, and you speak of my experiences with other bike shops as if they are in some way relevant to my encounter with Biking-Fix and have the cheek to call me the 'Common Denominator'. Yet, it is strange that my experience of using Biking-Fix was preceded by the experiences of SnapPlug, Ross Wharton, Nigel Bergin and others, who have all used Google Reviews to pass comment on your attitude and professionalism, the quality of your work and your pricing, so maybe you should take a long, hard look at yourself before you go casting dispersions on others. Ultimately, Steve's response doesn't alter the facts of the matter, which are that work which Steve stated he couldn't / wouldn't do was completed to standard by an alternative mechanic, who charged half of what Steve was asking. So do yourself a favour and avoid Biking-Fix like it were Covid 19.

  • Ross Wharton

Not very impressed. Due to covid shutting my usual bike shop I thought I’d try here. Tried to charge me £80 to replace a headset on a £200 bike. I’ve never paid half that previously. He then made me pay £20 labour (despite it taking him less than half an hour to examine the headset). When queried about charging £40 plus an hour labour, he claimed I had to pay for the use of his tools! I also found him to be very rude and twice he accused me of lying. When I produced an email to prove I was telling the truth he wouldn’t even apologise.

Found this place via a search engine and glad I did. I also prefer to use a local small business over a chain of shops. My bike had been stood for far longer than it should have and needed a once over via a professional who was very helpful, kept me informed and updated about the repairs. Was also a very quick turnround. All in all a brilliant service and great value. Will definitely be returning when the need arises.

  • Nigel Bergin

Barely a month has gone by and the gear shifter and cable had broke which were replaced. The seat saddle also snapped off despite a level one safety check being carried out. Let me add a caveat here, due to the short notice stating when the bike could be collected, I had no time to clean it (it was filthy). Several lectures later about that and a bill of £147, I have a bike that is broken again. A real shame.
