Why haven't I reviewed this bookshop before? It's a rarity outside of Charing Cross Rd to find a proper bookshop. There are the remaindered booksellers of course (Golders Green Rd) and odd branches of Watermans here and there but not too many options. This place is lovely to browse. Lots of serious Art books and proper grown up Fiction and Non-fiction. There's a lot of vintage stuff as well as modern paperbacks. Well worth a browse if you're in the Village of East Finchley. The owner curates the window displays with themes that are always changing and charming. I'm especially fond of the painted name above the entrance in classic Pulp Fiction style; it's a typographic joy to behold. Lovely staff too.

Fabulous mad bookshop. This is a place you could spend hours in just browsing with rapt attention. I picked up a short novel by Edward St Aubyn, and very reluctantly put back a book on lute and recorder temperaments for a later date. The range is large and eclectic and the staff friendly and authentic bookshop people. Can’t wait to return!

I’ve often visited Black Gull Books. It’s an Aladdin’s Cave, full of treasures - not cheap but where else can you browse and enjoy real and wonderful books? But now we are moving after 48 years and I need to let go of my library. I was surprised by the appreciation shown in what we have and the honest valuation. Thanks

The quintessential dusty, batty old bookshop. Has a good selection of history, art, children's, philosophy, psychology, history, literature, poems and plays. an ideal place to burn a quiet Sunday afternoon. My shelves are replete with volumes I am unlikely to ever read but I couldn't resist purchasing from Black Gull.

I discovered this place about a year ago and every time I visit there are always lots of new books to choose from. Their service is outstanding and the prices are very reasonable. Thanks for my latest book The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho ;) I highly recommend a visit to this place next time you're in the area.

What an amazing book shop. This place is an outstanding bookshop for all your book needs, new, vintage and rare books. Super friendly staff and cosy place. Great contribution to East Finchley and we are so lucky that we have this place in East Finchley. Go and check this pace out if you have not already.

Great selection across a small variety of subjects - fiction, non fiction, film, photography, art, children & kids books across good amount of ages. Fairly priced and nice gentleman behind the counter is helpful in suggestions AND knowing what's on hand. There are a lot of books in this little shop!

  • Anthony Borgniet

It’s a very nice little shop with a lot of second hand books of different genres. Nice to have a browse in. The assistants have always been friendly. There is a small couch at the back where you can sit and read. Cluttered with books. Very charming, almost strange (a good strange).

A quirky survivor of that almost extinct species; the suburban second-hand book shop. Black Gull is idiosyncratic and offbeat, chock-a-block with an eclectic book selection, bits and bobs, the odd poster and oodles of atmosphere. A wonderland especially for the bookishly inclined.

A great non charity bookshop that has a very large collection of very interesting books. Prices are not too bad at all, I will definitely try to visit again. Randomly found a book I had been looking for for ages! Stuff nicely arranged per topic, you can spend hours browsing.

Was having such a bad day and stepped out of the rain and into this absolute heaven which instantly lifted my mood. Such an eclectic range of books in an oasis of calm, I left with some exciting booty. Cannot wait to go back. Oh and and they accept Amex!

My favourite bookshop in London. I grew up in the area and have had the pleasure of frequenting this bookshop not just for its archives of cultural art publications but also for the occasional art or poster collection at the back. Brian is

This bookshop is really good- especially during covid-19 when libraries are currently closed. There are many good books there for all ages and there are many genres and topics. My daughter and son have bought quite a few books from there

This book shop is another reason why East Finchley is the best. I've spent hours in here exploring and there's always a really helpful guy at the counter. They also buy books as well which is great if you're having a clear out!

A very good and wonderful bookshop, a short walk from where I live in West Finchley. The curation is masterful and knowledgeable. From Plato to Roger Scruton, from Turgenev to V.S Naipaul, this is a place to be.

One of the most brilliant places I've ever been in. I need to come back with a huge bag to buy loads of books. Could have done with a computerized library catalogue of what is there though!
