Tried their Ume Forest Cake which is like the traditional Black Forest with a Japanese twist, not too sweet and is quite nice. With so many talks about the watermelon cake I would definitely like to give that a try next time I am there. The cost of cakes by themselves seems a bit more expensive than other place I’ve been to, but if you pair up the cake with a nice coffee it works out decently priced (I had a cake with an ice latte cost $16.50 in total which is in a similar price range of other nice places I have been to), so don’t just get the cake when you are there. Directions: It is easier to get there via the 96 tram as the stop is right around the corner from the place, however it is a bit hard to find parking if you drive, while there are some 1 hr free park on the other side of the road from the place, most of the other parkings in that area are permits zone and there a lot of no through roads so it is hard to drive around the area looking for parking.
The staff are friendly and enthusiastic. I ordered 2 cakes and had a very excellent recommendation based on my preferences, as well as a great description for each of them. Deliciously crafted. Beautiful presentation. I love contrasting flavours and textures. The cakes were very fresh. (Context: Often with other cakes, I'll find the texture gets compromised over time because of moisture and the way ingredients are layered, but these were great!) I showed up within an hour of closing and was welcomed with open arms. Sat outside on a beautiful sunny day. Yes, they do iced coffee. The cakes aren't cheap ($11) but you need to understand what you're paying for. Their signature: Strawberry Watermelon Cake Very refreshing! And it's the "world's most instagrammed cake" Ume Forest Cake A Japanese twist on a traditional Black Forest
We always get our birthday cake from here. Never been disappointed unlike other places. Watermelon cake is 10/10. From the first try till now it has not changed at all. The quality of the food is always the same. Fresh as ever and tastes the same. Must try watermelon, it’s so refreshing, not too sweet and soft texture. Just perfect for summer. We also tried their ice mocha and it was just amazing. Not many seating inside the cafe as they have stair like seating which is quite intimidating. They do have seating outside. If your thinking of ordering online ensure you book it couples of days ahead as each order requires at least minimum 2 days time. They sometimes do delivery but not always. Worth checking their website. Over all, best place for cake and pastries. Service is friendly too. Defiantly recommend.
Recommended strongly by my girlfriend as a "love at the first taste" experience so I brought my big camera and ordered one of them each on the Good Friday. Every single cake was made with love and passion. I'm not really a cake person but the watermelon cake just won me over and impressed me so much! The sweet level is absolutely at perfection and you just want to keep eating them. But I let my girlfriend have most part of it because this is how much I love her!
Tried the Black Sesame Cake $11, Watermelon Cheesecake $11, Lychee Strawberry Cake $11 and Egg tart $7. The Watermelon Cheesecake is very refreshing, especially when it’s hot outside. This was my favourite out of the cakes. All were yummy though. Also had a cappuccino which was a little weak for me but still a good coffee. Will definitely go back to try the other cakes.
Fantastic food and service, we also loved the coffee. The cakes are absolutely gorgeous and taste just as good. The ham and cheese croissant and the mushroom pastry were perfect for breakfast, followed by the pistachio and lemon cake which was like a lemon tart on steroids. Highly recommend a visit!
Reach my expectation, the moment I stepped inside, I can feel the vibes and WOW, really amazing. They have a ton of vegan options, both sweet and savoury. The cake was great on its own and even better with the topping. I can't wait to go back and try more menu items. Definitely recommended.
Ordered a large watermelon cake for a b birthday ($250). The staff were quick and friendly. The cake was delicious as expected and is a taller serving compared to others I've seen. Only drawback is it's quite expensive in my opinion. Everything else perfect however.
Their main product is water starberry melon cake. It's lightly sweet, has real slice of watermelon & strawberry flavoured jelly. This shop has minimalistic interiors, spacious in door seating & has good number of outdoor seating with heating facilities too.
Finally it’s here! I won’t post anymore about how amazing the strawberry watermelon cake is, plenty of people already do that. Came in early on Saturday morning at 8:30am when it was quiet and they just finished baking the cakes, so there
It is not only world’s most instagrammed cake but also very refreshing, perfectly sweet and tasty. I bought it for my mom’s birthday and she said it was the best cake she has ever had for her birthday. Decent serves.
The rose watermelon cake is the best. Always love it and always drool over it. It never disappoints in Sydney or Melbourne. We didn’t really like the other cakes as much, some flavors worked well but some didn’t.
Black Star pastry is a modern classic institution and must be protected at all costs. Their signature watermelon cake is often imitated but never duplicated. I'm so glad Melbourne can have this cake too.
Best bakery in st kilda! They havea really mellow atmosphere, great coffee and really really good cakes! Interior design is clean, minimal, created in 2045. 10/10 More
This chicken curry pastry is an absolute delight for the taste buds. The flavors are rich and well-balanced. Also I got a perfect small strong oat latte ☕️
5 stars for the cake itself. Been a fan of the watermelon cake since 2014. So yea, 5 stars for the cake but not for the price or service. …
