"Slow service"
My first attempt at visiting CDMX was a failure. They had advertised on social media that they would be open for lunch on a Saturday. Excited to try something new, I made my way from South Yarra to Brunswick East, only to find the restaurant closed. The inconsistency between their social media posts and actual operating hours was incredibly misleading and wasted both my time and effort. Despite this initial unfortunate experience, I decided to give CDMX another chance yesterday, and I want to share my incredibly disappointing incident. While I cannot speak to the quality of the food, the customer service I received was more than enough to deter me from ever attempting to give this establishment another chance. Unfortunately, my second visit was even more disheartening. Upon arrival, I was told that the wait would be approximately 20 minutes, and my name and phone number were added to a waiting list. Little did I know that this waiting list was nothing more than a charade. I observed multiple couples and groups arriving after me, and being seated before me, leaving me bewildered and frustrated while waiting outside. The staff demonstrated a complete lack of competence in handling the wait list. After waiting patiently for over an hour, I was ultimately told to come back next week. If they had no intention of following the waitlist, it would have been far more respectful to implement a straightforward first-come, first-served system rather than creating false expectations. The overall unprofessionalism displayed by the staff at CDMX left me feeling betrayed and thoroughly dissatisfied. The disregard for customers' time and the failure to adhere to their own systems has completely soured my perception of this establishment. I would strongly caution anyone considering a visit to CDMX to think twice, as the poor customer service I experienced is indicative of a deeply flawed operation.

So opening night last night @ CDMX Taqueria was more miss than hit. We arrived around 7pm to almost a full house. We had to wait only a short time to be seated unlike others arriving later waiting for seats as not enough staff to clear tables. We were seated near the front window which was quite cool every time the door opened. Ordering is via an app on a wonky table which is more suited to a food court. Drinks came quickly. My classic margarita $22 tasted nice but had way too much ice for a cold Melbourne night. There were only 3 cocktails on the menu, lots of beer options, a large range tequila & non alcoholic drinks. No wine for wine lovers out there. Although drinks arrived quickly food was another story. We waited an hr for our food after mentioning twice that we were still waiting. We got a "sorry for the wait" when our food finally arrived. Maybe as good will they could have offered us a free drink. Our birria tacos (these were our faves) and Al pastor tacos were nice. All food comes out on plastic plates which doesn't sit well when trying to reduce plastic waste. There is also no cutlery. We had to ask for water when others were given water after being seated. The music & decor won't take you to Mexico it seems like it's trying to be a more of a hip bar. Yes there were teething problems opening night but staff did an amazing job under the circumstances. More staff should have been hired. I won't be rushing back.

I was pretty pumped to try this place as they advertise having the best birria tacos in Melbourne. Unfortunately, I was a bit disappointed. First up, the space is truly odd. It's so bright, cold, and reflective that it makes you want to leave pretty quick. It's also super loud as there are literally no soft surfaces, and seating is not particularly comfortable. The ordering process was via QR and the only interactions with staff were when they seated us and brought our meals. I can't fault the service based on this experience. We ordered the totopos and guac, elote (corn), and the birria and frijol tacos. The guac was pretty good but not the best I've had. The totopos were also good but 80% of them were smashed into tiny pieces, so basically inedible with the guac. No cutlery meant I had to use my finger to get the guac out of the bottom of the container. The corn was good and was probably the best dish. The birria was OK but the broth was super oily and fairly flavourless. Needed more salt and rich beef flavour. The frijol was also OK but super heavy and fried. Both tacos lacked freshness and could have used a nice salsa or something to cut through the fattiness. I really liked the crispy tortillas. Overall, I was let down. Both Los Amantes del Agave and La Tortilleria are better in my opinion. The latter doing a much better birria than CDMX.

My partner and I visited on a Saturday at lunch time and were surprised that CDMX was not full of people, there was a comfy amount of room to find a seat. Food was incredible. We shared Guacamole + Totopos which were really tasty and a decent portion, it was also brought out first which we appreciated. As for Tacos we tried Birria and Chicharron Norteno tacos and both were incredible.. the crispy fried pork belly was soooo tasty and 3 tacos for $21-$23 was fair. We also had the Mushroom Gringa quesadilla which was really good. It may be a little pricey to some but the food is worth it. Service was great, the atmosphere of the restaurant is beautiful and was perfectly authentic to me (and not overstated) - it was a little darker in the back but we enjoyed our seat. I'd recommend coming to try - please preserve good mexican food options in Melb :)

Slow service. It shouldn’t take 40 minutes to get 3 orders of tacos when you’re at half capacity. The servers were very attentive and friendly, but it’s clear this place isn’t about vibe. They’re about turning over tables as fast as possible but I assume the kitchen isn’t equipped for that right now given the speed of service. Tried 3 different types, all meat. Bit of a let-down. The pork ones weren’t seasoned enough (or might have lacked salt). The consome for the birria wasn’t great. The special, Gringa, was the highlight. If they’d all been that good I’d probably come back for a post-drink snack. Plastic plates. Hard surfaces. Low maintenance. Unwelcoming decor. Loud music, expect to yell even at half capacity. This is definitely a family friendly and drunk taco spot. Not a date night spot. Also when you don’t eat the credit card fees, and don’t offer cash or alternative payment, the price of items needs to include the credit card fee cost. Usual, but annoying considering they’re now a chain they should know better. Owner: Get some napkin holders on those tables. I saw three or four people ask for more napkins, and it’s a pain in the arse when you’re covered in meat juice.

CDMX is a Taquería which started out as a pop-up in Melbourne Central, now with an additional store just opened up in Brunswick East. The restaurant pays homage to the artisanal tacos being served up in Mexico City. It is from the team behind Seddon’s Superchido. The team put their hearts and passion in to serve up authentic and delicious tacos to the people of Melbourne. You can definitely feel it! They whip up a mean Mezcal Chilli Margarita and will probably persuade you into some tequila shots. Start with their delicious cheese covered corn. I recommend trying all of the tacos, my favourites being the juicy Fish Tacos and the Birria Tacos (best going around for me so far). Finish with their delicious, sugary churros with caramel sauce. Not many Mexican restaurants in Melbourne impress me, but these guy are doing it right. One to put on your list! ✔️ ⭐️ 4.3/5 $$

Purchased from this restaurant on a Saturday at 5.30pm, walked in to purchase for takeaway. QR code based ordering so very impersonal experience for takeaway - I wanted to ask for recommendations but there were no staff at the counter. Efficient way of ordering though I guess. The staff I did interact with briefly seemed very friendly. Food took a while to come out, around 24 minutes, understandable as it was a Saturday. The corn chips and fries were excellent, would recommend. Tacos were tasty but they had very minimal toppings. This very well may be the traditional taco but I like my tacos loaded with interesting flavour combinations. The Birria taco sauce was great though. Tacos themselves are better at Fonda but that is a personal opinion. Will visit again for dine in to try other menu items.

(all tacos come with 3 per serve) birria tacos - sooo yummy and i love how it’s not as oily as some other places - the consume was really good and its a great dipping ‘sauce’ - the beef though could have more flavour? i felt like i was dunking my tacos too much into the consume for some extra flavour - $23, 8.5/10 al pastor tacos - really enjoyed this pork tacolike there was so much more flavour here compared to the birria taco - loved the addition of the pineapples too - $21, 9/10 pescado tacos - the fish was fried well and it was crispy and not too dry - loved the coleslaw that came with it - $21, 9/10 papas fritas - standard french fries - loved the seasoning on it though although more sesaosning please!!! - $7, 8/10 overall, really nice taco place situated away from the city!

I and my partner celebrated our anniversary tonight at the brand new restaurant - Taqueria. We ordered different kinds of Taco with braised beef & pork. The portions were mouthful, generous amount. The meat was so juicy, tender. We enjoyed them too much to remember to take photos of them. We would say it’s the best taco restaurant and we are so glad we live close by so we can definitely come over more often. All staffs are very professional & friendly. At the end, we were invited with two traditional shots which were so yummy. It’s right time to cheer on our anniversary. Thank you so much

Oh my days… a Mexican restaurant with no frills. The tacos were definitely comparable to my time in Mexico. Between three adults we ordered - Birria tacos (3) - Fried barramundi tacos (3) - Pork tacos (3) - Steak quesadilla (4 slices) - Pork quesadilla (4 slices) - Guacamole + totopos - Margarita - Mezcal mule one of the best cocktails I’ve ever consumed Each dish was packed with flavour and the space was full of blue neon. QR code ordering so very low touch. I would’ve liked to see tins of cutlery and hot sauce options available after ordering instead of having to ask, but not a huge dealbreaker. 100% would go back to try the other dishes.

So excited that CDMX has launched another, larger location. The tacos are all awesome and I love that you can order them individually to mix and match your own combo. Can vouch for the campechano, al pastor, pescado and birria - hard to pick a favourite but the spice and pineapple on the al pastor really sets it apart. Elote is also a must. As for drinks, there are lots of Mexican beers and cocktails on offer as well as an expansive selection of tequila and mezcal. If you’re unsure what to try, let the staff pick for you as they’re well educated on their agave-based spirits.

Probably one of the best birria tacos ($23) I've tried in Melbourne and churros ($10). The thing I have found with birria tacos is that they can be quite bland. The consomme for birria was flavoursome and not overly salty. The beef was tender and moist. We also tried the Al pastor tacos ($21) were also very good, the pork meat had a nice charred smokey flavour. The churros were nice and thick, crispy on the outside and fluffy inside. I was quite surprised how good these were. Service was friendly. Overall a great taco night and would recommend a visit

Went to this place last Friday night with some friends, and the place was incredibly nice. Great ambience. Tasted their food, and they were sensationally yummy. Their Birria Tacos were on-point. Tasted so good. Their range of cocktails were great. We had the tequila cocktail. Service was excellent, from when we entered being greeted and shown to our seats. We will def be back......

Liked these tacos. Really liked them. In fact I’d say they’re the best in Brunswick East. Maybe not far off the gold standard (La Tortilleria). Always like to see a birria on offer. Could’ve used a smige more consumé though. Pescado tacos were excellent. Super crisp batter and perfectly cooked fish. Got the corn as a side which was a bit of a miss. Too much sauce took away from the char that I was looking for. Overall a very welcome addition to Lygon. I’ll be back.

I'd describe it as okay. The tacos are fine, though a bit pricey for what you get. It's very sterile, not a place you want to spend a long time at I don't think. QR system didn't work as others have mentioned. Edit: Wen't to Los Hermanos - it was way better. Food was better and more reasonably priced. Drinks were cheaper. And it had atmosphere. Not as big as CDMX though so be sure to book.

Tacos are the most legit I’ve had in Australia, and the cocktails are very nice and boozy, but unfortunately this place is absurdly priced. 3 tacos and a cocktail would cost about $5 in Mexico, but here that will cost you about $50. Obviously $5 isn’t feasible in Australia, but this is ridiculous. This is not a food that should be that expensive. I won’t be coming back here until they can sort out a reasonable price for these tacos!!!! Also they played really bad music the whole time and the blue lighting is bizarre
The Place has a good ambience and good vibes, Staffs are very nice and courteous, We ordered their specialties and I'm surprised with their authentic Mexican dishes like tacos, I highly recommend this restaurant if you're looking for an Authentic Mexican dishes located in Melbourne. Gracias!

Tastes good, would have loved if pulled pork was also available on the menu. $10 happy hour Margarita is a good deal, I think it ended at 7 pm when we were there on a Wednesday. Overall $60 for two taco servings and 2 margaritas. soft Tortillas a bit crunchy for some reason, probably it’s been prepared in batches before orders come in. Good service

Went here as it’s a very hyped up place. The staff were absolutely lovely. The chips were good too but the birria tacos were very under whelming. The taco shell was soaked in oil, the slow cooker beef was bland and flavourless as well as the rest of the fillings. Very disappointing as I was really excited to try.

Why bother doing a waiting list and getting people's numbers if you are not going to follow it?! 2 tables arrived later and got seated in front of us, when questioned the receptionist said they were there first - to the lady that was at the reception at 6.30pm today: stop lying, we are not blind.

Food and drink is really good, down side is you have to order via QR code which costs you per order. That should have gone out of fashion with lockdowns. Would love to come back, but if we can not use other means of paying and actually have conversations with the staff on recommendations for specials and specific tequila, really takes the shine away form the great food

Best Mexican food I have ever had, we’ve been here twice now and not disappointed in any way. And to top it off their staff are exceptional! We had Kaizz serve us and he made our meal there absolutely amazing. He was attentive to us and all of the patrons, and had such a lovely energy. Best service I’ve had in a long time! Hope to see him promoted some time, I’ll definitely be back for some more amazing food and service!
From the vibe, fit out and overall atmosphere, it was engaging enough to bring on curiosities on what flavours the food would bring…it didn’t disappoint. Features throughout the restaurant had wow factor with class and translated to the food. The house made salsa had a garlic hit that didn’t miss then came on the fire. I am keen to see them again on the official grand opening night, July 14th!
As a fellow Mexican, I can certify: these are LEGIT tacos! Hands down the best tacos in town. The birria tacos come with a crusty layer of cheese so they’re like the famous quesabirrias. They also come with consomé (not to be confused with salsa), cilantro, onion and a slice of lime. These are my top recommendation for anyone visiting!! Friendly and helpful staff and overall great vibes!
I haven't tried the food, but the service is awful. I was waiting for one hour (was told 20min) before they asked me to come next Tuesday because it was not going to be possible to get a table... They do not prioritize the walk-in booking list. They also apologized for the bad service provided but will not be back. 2nd time I tried to eat at cdmx and 2nd time I failed.
