I walked in with a left over box of mod pizza that I was going to be taking home with me and sat down in the center of the cafe. Immediately one of the women working there said "hey we don't do that here." A bit shocked, I said "oh I will be getting some coffee in a little bit". She responded with a rude smirk, notioning that she wasn't happy. So, because the whole cafe was now looking at me because of the way she initiated the conversion, I felt awkward and out of place, so I left. Coming back with a friend to study, I calmly mentioned that I wish she would have come over to me personally and told me about there no other food policy and I would have gladly finished the single piece of pizza left in the box outside the cafe and then came back in. She then responded "we treat everyone the same." So if you ever go in there with other food on you, expect to be called out by the staff in front of everyone in a rude and extremely direct way. I will never mention this cafe to anyone else or be bringing my business here ever again. I was treated terribly from the moment I walked in the door. If the business owner is reading this review, think about how you treat customers. Maybe instead of reacting aggressively, take into consideration what other people have to say rationally and calmly, then address the situation in an appropriate manner...

Cool little location with an attempt at cozy vibes inside. However, the place ends up being crowded due to too many people in a small cafe. The cafe would be improved by having a limit to how many people could be in the shop at one time, maybe by cutting down on the amount of seating. A couch would work wonders to improve coziness. The coffee is subpar, their specials have great ideas! My boyfriend got a cardamom latte that tasted overwhelmingly & only of cardamom, which is admittedly a cardamom latte but not fun to drink. I got a spicy dark chocolate mocha that was very rich, but needed something else to balance it out so it didnt taste so heavy. With some work this place could be really sweet & cozy, & I'm confident that as the baristas hone their skill & they fine tune the atmosphere this place could be very nice.

First off, I waited for 10 minutes before someone took my basic order for straight coffee. It also wasn't clear where the line started for ordering vs where people were waiting for drinks... During the first sip of coffee, it was excruciatingly and obviously clear why every drink I saw being made and consumed contained abundant amounts of milk and/or sugar. The coffee itself is disgusting. It was unbearably bitter and tasted burnt. It was worse than most gas station coffee... Perhaps their espresso drinks are good, but it's usually pretty easy to hide terrible coffee with milk and sugar. I have been interested in trying Cafe Allegro for months because it has good reviews, but I was sorely disappointed. So far, Anchorhead Coffee is the only cafe I've tried that has decent beans and brews. I haven't yet tried a Seattle cafe that has better coffee than the french press and cold brew I make at home with beans from Trade.

Very nice hidden gem!! My roommate and I came to study and they have outlets conveniently located along the walls. The place has chill cozy vibes. It’s been a while since I’ve met a super friendly barista with good recommendations :) I got the iced strawberry vanilla latte with oat milk and it was delicious! It tasted like strawberry milk with a hint of coffee. I’d recommend it for those who don’t like an espresso forward flavor. I’ll be back to try one of their regular lattes next time! We both got the quinoa burrito since they had limited food options close to closing. We were pleasantly surprised at how filling the burrito was! It’s decently priced for $7.65 considering its portion size. Can’t wait to try their other food!

The cafe is a great place to work, with the exact vibe conducive to people who prefer the hustle bustle, and anonymity, of working in a spacious and public area. It has seating downstairs, and upstairs, charging slots for tables in the corner, and a good selection of coffee, teas, and baked goods. The baristas are friendly and cheerful. The bathroom is clean, you need a code to enter. It's such a small walk away from Magus books, and quite near the University of Washington's buildings and libraries, and a walkable distance away from the 1-line, which is super convenient.

I have never written a bad review but here we are… The barista at Cafe Allegro is extremely unkind. The coffee shop closes at 5pm (which I was aware of). The barista at 4:45pm begins to yell (yes yell) at other customers and I to pack up and leave. When I was shocked at the fact that a grown man was yelling at me, he gave me a dirty look and shouted “what”. To top it all off he went to the back and started blaring heavy metal music to get people to leave. Not to mention the coffee sucked. Honestly go anywhere else to get your coffee or study, unless you like getting yelled at.

A true hidden gem in the university district! If you’re looking for a quiet place to drink quality coffee, look no further! Excellent service by the baristas, affordable drinks, and multiple seating areas, what’s not to like? My partner and I arrived on a Sunday morning around 11:00 and were immediately greeted. A small latte and small dirty chai cost us under $10 and were ready within 2 minutes of us placing our order. Cafe Allegro has become a weekly spot for us and I recommend this spot to anyone wanting good coffee and good vibes. ☕️

Cool location tucked in the alley way behind Broadway. Atmosphere was relaxed, mostly students with laptops. Coffee was good and the baked goods were okay despite being baked by sea wolf bakers. The prices are astronomically high for the food selections. $5 for a non warmed croissant and $5.50 for chocolate croissant? We ordered 2 12oz coffees and 2 croissants for $22? With the suggested tip your talking $25! We enjoyed the cafe but will pass on the baked goods next visit. Again, it’s a cool spot and the coffee was good.

Deceptively large coffee shop which touts its reputation as the oldest in Seattle. Spacious upstairs seating provides a pleasant atmosphere to utilize the free WiFi while sipping on well-crafted espresso. Shots are smooth, sweet, and complex - very light body compared to most espresso. Cappuccinos are made properly, pastries are generally good but not outstanding; overall very par for the price. Service felt forced-friendly and customer interaction is kept to a minimum, almost to the point of being ignored. Worth putting up with for the drink quality, however would recommend other cafes in the area instead.

  • Richard Letts

This is a large coffee-shop in a back alley in the U-district. It has a lot of smallish tables occupied by students working away on their laptops and is obviously a little off the beaten path. The alleyway itself is undergoing some beautification, possibly lead by the coffee shop and the down-hill end feels okay. the Coffee-shop is just up from Mod-Pizza The coffee itself is rich and smooth, with no bitter notes, and an almost chocolatey after taste that lingers. at $4.24 (12/2017) for a DTL sometimes worth the extra couple of dimes compared to other nearby places.

  • Brian Guenther

Now THIS is a charming, old-school coffeehouse. I don't mean to sound old, but I first went there in the late 1970s, when there were three places you could get espresso in the U-District. (Four if you include the cafe in the Art Building on campus.) The drink that has been known as a "latte" for so many years was called "cafe au lait" back then. While it's nice to be able to buy an espresso drink nearly anywhere, it's virtually impossible for a large chain to have the charm of a decades-old, one-of-a-kind coffee shop. Cafe Allegro has that charm.

  • Yü Wu

Coffee is fine, vibe is golden. One of the closest coffee shop to UW, but not really on the main street, the location itself makes a local gem. The decor is filled with artifacts and stories distilled through time, the atmosphere is inclusive, relaxing and welcoming. It's been a while since my university days and Cafe Allegro reminded me how sweet and precious those days are now I'm done with school for good. It's nice to see young people who seem genuinely excited about the future, as well as seasoned faces carrying a sense of time with them.

  • Isabel

Staff are hit-or-miss in terms of traditional ""customer service."" Music is also hit or miss, sometimes is loud experimental instrumental etc and others it's nice and pleasant. Despite a lot of students coming here to study/read, I like that the atmosphere isn't all hushed. You can easily have a conversation with a friend or two Their coffee is nice -- I always get a mocha. There is a second floor that is quieter (from what I recall). I often study or meet friends here. Close to campus, so I've even had meetings with TAs here before.

  • Stone Age

All around perfect cafe. great location, great drinks, range of light food options, nifty upstairs seating, even have beer and wine at normal/reasonable prices. Edit— there are some wack reviews of this place. seriously people, they sell coffee. It’s not more complicated than that. If the barista wanted to smile at you they would. Etc.

This place is a classic favorite of mine, and is a must-stop for anyone visiting the area in need of some caffeine. The building has stood the test of time, and has a lot of character to it (don't forget to check out the new upstairs patio!). Their coffee is never burnt, and always delicious. Ask about their discounted, day old pastries if you are frugal like me, because they're just as tasty! I implore you to stop by next time you get a craving for Starbucks - because Allegro does coffee better.

  • Karl Schulz

This coffee shop has a great atmosphere, cool rotating art, and their coffee is probably the best in the U District. As a frequent user of coffee shops in the neighborhood, I began avoiding Cafe Allegro as a study spot because it's too packed on the weekends. They can't help it that they're popular, but it'd be nice if they ventilated the back room a little better (it gets stuffy due to a lack of windows). Conclusion: Nice for a passing visit, not so nice as a regular study joint.

  • Michelly Calzadilla

The location is strange, tucked in an alley near the UW campus, which is generally a bad in Seattle, but it is wide and clean enough to make you cautiously proceed. Inside the cafe sports high ceilings and a small space, with additional seating located next door and upstairs. The baristas are friendly and complimented my outfit, so they win for that. The coffee is pretty good too. Capuccino and Latte both well made. Overall, I'd recommend visiting if you're in the U District.

  • Victor Cannestro

One of the best spots in the U District, right next to the venerable Magus Books. They have choice espresso--especially when cardamom pods are involved--mocha beverages that hold their own, and seasonal drinks. It's also a solid place to study since the vibe is usually pretty subdued and there's a lot of seating options (though not always available). Occasionally, there will be cool distractions outside: I've seen skateboarders and a talented dancer tearing up the alleyway.

  • Lav Sleight

There exists an atmosphere contained by Cafe Allegro. Wide, thick, cottony. Warm. The atmosphere is ideal, matching the wood surfaces and full wall. But something was seen in the atmosphere. It was unwieldy. Long, longer than the inside or outside rooms. It is only seen in the atmosphere. Brushing against every customer, who gives money for coffee and otherwise. Something so long is rarely seen. Inside even rarer. All is reccomended, coffee, atmospheric view, and otherwise.

  • Jeff Schrader

This has been a part of Seattle's University District since 1975. Located in an alley off the main street, they've been serving up fine coffees and teas in Seattle well before that became identified with the city. No frills with this place, just good coffees and pastries, plus tables that allow groups to play card games or converse. They also have outdoor seating if you are skittish about dining indoors. Go there, they've weathered the pandemic and deserve your support.

  • Elisha Kassell

Outside you'll notice a decrepit bench next to the ivy-soaked brick wall, but this only masks the glory which is the cafe allegro! A great café due to the staff, delicious drinks and treats, the comfortable yet enlightening ambiance, always smooth music and great artistic works mounted on the wall. The place is clean and comfortable. There are multiple rooms to this coffee house, and even an upstairs level for you to enjoy the morning dew at dawn with your coffee!

  • Keith Cote

In a city of literally hundreds of coffee shops, this is one of the legendary original ones. Hidden down an alley right off the Ave adds to the sense that it is one of Seattle's best kept secrets. With it being just a block from UW and literally adjacent to Magus, one of Seattle's legendary used book stores, this coffee shop naturally has a collegiate atmosphere ideal for long study sessions. Plenty of tables and booths to plop down with some books or your laptop.

  • Hugo Aguas

This is such a cute little coffee shop! The prices are econmical, plenty of seating, and the vibe is downright mellow. It can get a little crowded, but given the proximity to the university, I understand. Great for a local/student, but not much else. Not a lot of food options, but that's okay! You're in the U-District!

They serve great coffee, with three seating areas. I liked their vintage style and it was clean&quite. But I’m posting a bad review due to my first time visit to this cafe with a foreign friend who was taking pictures of the place and suddenly a women working their ask him aggressively to stop taking pictures of her while he wasn’t even capturing an inch of her. I think a place like that most be treating tourist more nicely. Won’t go their again.

  • Hannah Mathwich

I came to this cafe during my visit to Seattle and absolutely loved it. Lovely atmosphere! Our barista, Katy, was so kind and warm and gave us some DAMN GOOD coffee. She gave us plenty of suggestions for things to do around town and was a delight to chat with. This lady 100% deserves a raise and every tip you could ever give her. So glad I stopped by here, yummy food and coffee and LOVELY staff. 10/10 would recommend :)

  • Mike Penick

Pros: Coffee, ambiance Cons: Service This little gem is tucked away in an alley, close to UW, and is very quaint and cozy. The only thing holding this review back from 4 stars is the service - I have never been in here and NOT been treated with a smile :( Must be finals week... I would recommend this place to family & friends, but warn them to put on their best, infectious smile when receiving their coffee & scone...

  • Adam

This place is such an adventure. The coffee is intense and so is the neighborhood. It is a little hard to find, down an alley in the u district and surrounded by what appear to be homeless teenagers. But the cafe itself feels safe and cozy and the perfect place to write in a journal, read a good book and people watch. The coffee has a strong flavor, lots of caffeine, and I can't stop going every chance I get

  • Pacific Northwest Fandom News

It seems to me that the staff at this location hates those living in poverty, especially youth. They hide the fact that they are in the same alleyway as a youth shelter. They kick PAYING customers off of the PUBLIC outdoor seating structure if they just happen to be homeless. And worst of all they threaten to call the cops on anyone who compliments their looks.

  • Erik Lee

The barrista yelled at me for looking at the posters behind him because i was "looking at him." I felt like I was in one of those fake gym tiktoks where the girl yells at the guy for staring at them, except this barrista was a guy. Looked like he was having a bad day but still mean.

Fantastic! In this café shop, the setting and the vibe are really calming. As he managed to provide me with awesome latte art, the barista is very masterful. It was absolutely an excellent service that I would definitely suggest to all my peers. A genuinely perfect place to rest and take a sip of delicious coffee. It's always worth it! Thanks a bunch, guys!

  • Omnifarious

This is a clean, quiet coffee shop full of people studying. It feels like the kind of place where a writer who was academically respected, but not very popular would say they got their best work done. It's kind of hidden in an alley, so it requires some effort to find. They have good coffee and a nice selection of large cookies as well as other pastries.

  • Laurel Doyle

Utterly delicious cold brew. I just picked one up to go, but it's one of the better I've had. Just the right amount of ice and cream too, in my opinion. The interior of this place is cosy, and they fit in a surprising amount of seating. I will be back Cafe Allegro!

It's been 2 years that I have lived in Deattle and this remains as my favorite local café. Beautiful, rich brick interior with large windows and plenty of natural light. The coffee is perfect and the service is geniune. Try the Italian soda! There is a quiet room upstairs and a small terrace. Need I say more? Look for it nested the alley.

Their staff are a real mixed bag here. The people who work here range from pleasant and cordial to downright hostile. Shame really, it's otherwise a great place. I could probably come back, they make some good drinks and he ambiance is nice, but they're overpriced and sometimes rude so I'm not 100% sure. Also they have no plugs

Have been visiting this place quite frequently. It is one of the best coffee I have had in Seattle area. Please check out this cool cafe next time you are in University District. I have recently started buying beans from here. They offer one of the greatest quality beans which are roasted fresh (3-4 days prior to buy date).

  • Jenna McKinney

From the a-frame sign on the street, I was expecting Cafe Allergo to be a tiny little hole in the wall coffee place. It's a gorgeous medium-sized cafe with lots of seating and even their own t-shirts. their espresso is good (not amazing) and their pastries range standard. A place I recommend but only if you're in the area.

  • Jolene Jones

Came out of our way to come to Seattle's oldest coffee shop only to have someone roll their eyes at us and be a overall jerk. The coffee wasn't even that great. Wouldn't recommend this place unless they get friendlier baristas. A waste of time and money that could have been better spent elsewhere while visiting the city.

  • Whitney Taylor

You know, the first time I visited here it was great. They have such a great hidden spot and so much room with their upper level option and cool music and funky chill vibes but then the more I came here the worse the WiFi and coffee got. I won't give up maybe its just a few bad days. But over all worth checking out.

  • James Wagner

This place seemed pretty cool. You have to go through an alley to get there, and the rustic feel was quite inviting. But the staff's interpersonal skills ranged from below average to downright offensive. I was planning on telling my friends about this place. Now the last I'll ever speak of it is to review it here.

I love this little hide away of a coffee shop. The have really nice staff, and fantastic coffee. Not to mention there's a lot of seating, including some outdoor balcony seating. The drinks "for here" come in nice glass cups of variable sizes. They also have some nice pastries for sale, baked fresh!

The Allegro is a pillar of the University District. The atmosphere is dominated by students, but there is a larger back room where a person can bury themselves. Among the coffee shops on the Ave, this one is certainly the best and most established. Additionally, you enter through an alley!

My over easy eggs were prepared perfectly, I've come to find out, over easy can be done a variety of ways. My husband had eggs Benedict and he was extremely pleased. It was so good as well as the toast and potatoes served. Very nice small restaurant. My decaf Americano was very delicious.

  • Mark Iovanisci

Going to a coffee shop just craving that latte from the first coffee shop in Seattle only to find out they can’t make you that foamy goodness is quite the bummer, as much as a bummer as this is a run on sentence. But with their charm and a good Americano it’s totally a 5 star experience.

  • Nick Nuechterlein

I’ve lived in Seattle for 5 years, in three neighborhoods, and this is still, by far, the best cafe I’ve been to. The real deal. Delicious coffee, superb taste in music, wonderful ambiance for workings and chatting, and amazing, real people. Thinking of heading over here this morning.

  • Richard Guboynytskiy

I generally get their cheapest drop coffee because I'm poor, but I keep coming back for the lively and very distinctive atmosphere. It does As weird as it sounds to say of a coffee shop, I really like their tiny first floor bathroom! I find the very efficient design very satisfying.

  • Bee Keyser

I love Cafe Allegro! One of my favorite cafes in Seattle. Tons of seating, a wonderful, chill atmosphere, roof deck upstairs for outside seating, and the staff are always so friendly! It's nooked in the alley which makes it a bit hard to find but it's quite the gem, for sure.

What a special Seattoe neighborhood spot. We are new locals in the area & we are loving this place. From the poet's corner to the mean cold brew and tasty pastries, we have been here 3 times in the past week (with plenty of options in the area). We are hooked on this place!

Thank the lower case gods this place is hidden away and surrounded by a wonderful and nasty alleyway. Their coffee is, hands down, the best on the Ave. Fast, delicious and strong, just how I like 'em! Anyway, don't tell them I sent you, they don't know my real name.

Allegro is hidden in the alleyway that runs alongside MOD pizza. I think this place is the best coffee shop on the ave. The cold brew is great, I love the atmosphere, and the service is always friendly and helpful. Their sidewalk sign is almost always funny too.

  • Hayden Hong

Cafe Allegro is my favorite place to get coffee on the Ave. The little alley it’s in is adorable, the coffee is great, and it’s near an official UW/eduroam hotspot which means great internet for students. I come here several times a week and enjoy it every time!

Great coffee, great vibes, great venue, OK food. If the management reads this: your baked goods look, taste and feel like you bought them from Costco (or etc). We all love Costco but nothing beats a fresh baked pastry paired with a delicious coffee.

Their espresso is not to my taste. I like smooth full-bodied espresso (black) but this was almost undrinkable. Rather than the usual bitterness you'll get with bad espresso this was mouth-puckeringly sour. Had to add cream just to make it drinkable.

Great neighborhood coffee region Amazing cappuccino and white mocha. Chocolate croissant and cheese danish had been terrific as properly. The food is delicious, proper, and worth each penny.

Best looking alley way in the neighborhood. Somehow manages to be both off the beaten track and attract a bustling crowd of UW types. Drinks are not overpriced, nice place to spend time.

The location makes this place feel like a dirty little secret (affectionate). Chill vibes less packed than some of the other cafés.

It's an alright coffee store that isn't better or worse than your average coffee joint. They feature artwork on the wall for sale which is interesting to look at. Very small store.

Coffee and atmosphere are excellent! But the staff can be downright condescending and judgemental. Like other reviews have said, there is no conventional customer service here.

Great historic coffee house and espresso bar. Friendly staff. Cool vibe throughout.

Great coffee and spaces to meet. Both the back room and secret space upstairs aften have productive spaces to study or discuss, while the main room usually has music playing.

This place serves great coffee. Has lots of seating to choose from (upstairs indoor/outdoor). It's tricky to get here the first time, located in the alley next to MOD pizza.

Among the best espresso spots in Seattle, and one of the oldest. They've got tons of seating space, including a quiet study room, although the whole place is often crowded.

Nice coffee shop in the alley, I like the privacy of the set-up. Very cool art hanging and the pasties are delicious. Also as a tea drinker I always enjoy their selection.

Great coffee shop! Good spot to study/work, read, hang out. Lots of outlets. Great vibes.

Cafe Allegro has a friendly staff, lots of seating, and a great upstairs deck to enjoy a beautiful Seattle day. The drinks are decent enough, but don't blow me away.

Coffee, art, great staff, interesting building, opportunity for cake, all up a back alley. Yeah if I was a local I would be here daily good job team! …

I have been coming here for years. This place is a Seattle staple. They offer great coffee and very comfortable atmosphere. Great ambiance for a little cafe

Loved this cafe! Breakfast sandwiches were both delicious, the Apple fritter was to die for, staff were friendly and the cafe had a nice chill vibe!

Amazing cafe tucked away in random alley adjacent to UW campus. Beware coffee is scalding hot. Do let it cool before drinking.

I've gone here for years, it's the perfect hole in the wall shop with exceptional coffee wrapped up in a cozy atmosphere.
