Went for afternoon high tea, pictured is the premium ($45) high tea. Beware long review. Positives: Ambiance was very nice and it is a beautiful, spacious cafe. The people who work there are very nice! I could see myself coming here to buy a drink and study or catch up with friends. Nice outdoor space as well. The tableware was pretty. We had a good time despite the negatives! If I had come for the regular cafe, I would have given four stars at least, depending on what I would have had. Negatives: for four people, it was near $200 for high tea. For that price, we kind of expected higher quality food. Some of the food was alright, but several of the desserts were bland and stale. The eclair in particular tasted like it was a few days old. I almost couldn't finish it. The scones...were not good. For high tea, they give you a selection of commercial teabags and you can only take one. You get One Teabag for a $40 pretax/tip high tea. There were paper sugar packets on the table and we had to ask for milk. The people are very nice, but we kind of felt like we'd been forgotten. We ran out of hot water several times and had to wait ~30 minutes before anyone came over. One of my friends had to go up to the staff to ask. Online menu was different from what we were served. Tea options were completely different. Unfortunate, because black signature and Earl Grey were kind of what I was hoping for. Oh well. Conclusion: I think the cafe itself is quite nice, but I can't recommend the high tea. It's vastly overpriced for unfortunately mediocre food and nonexistent service. This is unfortunate because it is a great way to spend time with friends and I was really looking forward to a lovely experience. I am usually quite generous with my reviews but I left feeling honestly scammed, so two stars only :( Improvement suggestions: The cafe should emphasize improving service, or even just add a keg of hot water for self-service. Place a much, much higher emphasis on the tea. Consider allowing 3 tea bags per person, I'm sure it would set you back maybe two dollars and would vastly improve the experience. Consider even getting higher quality looseleaf tea! And maybe even one (1) English style tea rather than generic "tropical, jasmine" mixes. I would have loved a simple, high quality earl gray. Maybe get sugar cubes and put them in a fancy little container instead of sugar packets. Don't make your customers ask for milk. They're here for British inspired afternoon tea. You should give them milk. Also, please don't serve your customers stale food. Finally, update your online menu so that it actually reflects the served food and tea. With these suggestions followed, I could perhaps see it being $40 per person, although even so it's still a stretch without several more improvements to the food. As of right now, I would think a fair price would be maybe $25-30.

Service, including time management and efficiency is a constant issue every time I've visited. Everyone has to watch every order being made and being prepared until they get to your order. It's absolutely infuriating and confusing. Especially because it's never an unmanageable amount of people being served. Definitely manageable for two staff to handle yet the wait times are way too long. The staff are not always kind and are not always inviting. However, I'd rather be served in a timely manner rather than be served with kindness and a smile. I have been for take out twice and dine in three times. The pastries have been great, but a couple of times they've been obviously stale, old and not fresh at all. This happened to me on the times I did take out and was not able to bring it to their attention immediately. The coffee is bitter and subpar. You're paying premium prices for average service and product. The atmosphere is initially super cool and inviting but after a while it feels chaotic, a bit too much and cheap. Not much competition for this cafe business in and around Barrhaven so we accept it for what it is, however I believe it could use a bit of improvement all round. The cakes are good and especially the cheese cakes. Definitely have recommend those, and have done so on numerous social media outlets.

Updated May 2023: past 2 cakes were so dry!!! I have no idea what happened, would have been better off getting a grocery store cake. Cocotella didn't taste like Nutella at all? Very disappointed. Not sure if I'll go back anymore. Take previous review with a grain of salt. ___________________________________ I searched all over Ottawa for a birthday cake, and this place is definitely one of the best in town. Their chocolate mousse cake is so fluffy and luscious! Other cakes I tried were equally delicious. Unfortunately in my 3 times going there, the employees ruin the experience. Frankly, they don't seem to want to be there or do anything for you as a client. They're curt, rude, and seem overwhelmed with every minor thing. Lots of attitude and you feel guilty asking them for anything. The setting is rough as well. Getting there is atrocious with on street parking making the road only large enough for 1 car to pass. The parking lot is also too small, so when picking up a cake, be prepared to wait to park. Inside it is VERY noisy, not easy to have a conversation. It's chaotic, without clear sitting and ordering areas.

I am still speechless and can’t express how absolutely amazing and picture-perfect my bridal shower was today. I normally wait to post these reviews so I can gather my thoughts but I feel so grateful and satisfied with the service we received tonight I couldn’t wait. I am in awe, it was more than I could ever imagine my bridal shower could be. A friend and I were studying a few months prior at this cafe getting ready for exams and I mentioned to her “how wonderful would this place be for a bridal shower”, it felt like I blinked and here I was sitting in a private room with all the people I loved, having the shower of my dreams. The service was impeccable, three tiered platters of sandwiches, cake and scones, all so delicious; specialty tea, independent tea pots for each person; the staff were so incredibly helpful, answering every question my mom had when trying to prepare for the event. This cafe will FOREVER hold a special place in my heart, and I hope to enjoy it forever with my soon to be husband. And I am so so thankful for today, for this memorable bridal shower.

The cutest cafe in Barrhaven! From ambiance to customer service, and food selection to decoration, Carmelito Café is the place to be! They have a huge space with beautiful furniture and wall art. It feels like a dreamland in here like Alice in Wonderland There's also peaceful café jazz music playing in the background at a very low volume, make this café a great study spot! This is only my second time here, but I will be coming back again and again. Not just for the yummy food but the customer service is really something else! Chantal is an absolute gem and is very helpful if you're ever wondering what to order! Also, the boss Claudia and new hire Tatjana are very sweet. There is another gentleman (Brandon) who works here and they're all so nice! This place was recommended by one of my friends. The atmosphere is ok the tables are high and their chairs are not comfortable to sit on. It was a bit busy on a Saturday morning and there was only a couple of employees working which made the service very slow, and that was ok. I’ve order vegetarian frittata it took over 15 min to be ready and it was cold. We ordered three cappuccinos my cup came full to the top my sisters got hers half full and my mam hardly one third of a cup…for our biscottis with our coffee which they forgot to bring when I went to remind them they completely ignored me and continued preparing a phone order I stood in front of the employee over 5 min and she kept ignoring me, when I reminded her again she went to get it and asked me if I have a dish to take it with!!! I went to my table laughing asking them to remind me to bring my dish next time!!!

Went to the barrhaven store right at 9am on a Sunday just as they opened. Very cute jazzy little place, looks bigger on the inside than it does on the outside with a nice little 'quiet' section away from all the music but still within ear shot. Coffee and deserts were delicious and the service was impeccable. Everyone working kept working (cleaning) when there wasn't any customers and everything was presented with care. The absolute only downside I could find was that the signage on some of the food was either scuffed or completely nonexistent.

Better off going to the one on Preston. I tried this location for afternoon tea after enjoying their baked goods at their location on Preston Street… the food was overpriced and the staff didn’t seem to know what to do at times. First our tea came, and the oat milk immediately curdled. When I went to ask if it would be possible to get new tea bags and more hot water, the worker was really confused and said she needed to speak to her supervisor first. She came back to explain that we might just not be used to their kind of oat milk as its not refrigerated. We understood and just wanted to drink tea with no milk at this point. She said that’s okay but it would be $3 extra for each… okay. The afternoon tea special came out and looked nice, but was dry and looked better than it tasted. Stale and unappetizing.

My wife made reservations for our daughter’s birthday (tea) party, with 2 different employees. Both told us we’d be able to have the high tea area, for 7 children and 5 adults, the sandwich tiers and some baked goods. We asked if we could bring birthday cupcakes from outside, and we’re told it would be okay, not only over the phone, but in person while putting down the deposit. When we got there, there was no seating available for us, despite the reservation, we were denied the ability to bring our cupcakes. The owner was unapologetic and unaccommodating, and accused me of “attacking” her, when I said her establishment was disorganized and lacked staff communication. A party of 12, then had to find alternate arrangements on the spot. Thanks Carmelito Cafe for making the day a memorable experience.

Excellent service. Coffee brought right to my table. The person taking my order was very knowledgable and patiently helped me figure out what order I wanted by telling me a little bit about each drink I had in mind. The espresso & latte were amazing! Very high quality beans. The size of the coffee was better than I expected for the price it was. My friend with my liked the regular brewed coffee and we shared an eclair which was pretty much the size I expected for the price. It wasn't a cheap dessert but it was of high quality too. So if you're looking for a place to run in for a quick coffee or have a more indulgent time this place can offer both. Oh and it also has it's liquor licence Thanks Carmelito Café

I've been here 4 times now. Love the food but in regards to sandwiches, there isn't a sign to indicate what is in the display case, and servers are hit and miss for friendliness. There is consistently something they are missing when they give me my order. As for the desserts they are consistently very delicious. FYi...they don't like to give napkins here, so I've learned to bring my own napkins. Lol. High tables are very uncomfortable for seating.

went here for my birthday with my friends and it was great! the coffe was very fresh and it tasted amazing! we got the strawberry cheesecake and it was also very fresh and very tasty! when it comes to atmosphere, it might be too maximalist for people that prefer a minimal decor. some of the tables were really old and unstable so they might need some maintenance to fix that. however, overall the vibe is very good, the staff is very fast and friendly. The taste is 10/10 so I will definitely be visiting again!

I heard a lot about this cafe but both the service and the food/drink were below average. We ordered 2 iced americano (one being decaf) and a Nutella cheesecake. When we got our drinks, we weren’t able to tell which one was decaf because it wasn’t labelled or anything! The cafe wasn’t busy at all when we ordered so I feel like they could have taken a couple seconds to differentiate between the two. As for the Nutella cheesecake, the cake itself looked nice (with real Nutella inside the jar used to decorate) but the overall taste was disappointing. + decided to visit again and both the food and experience were a lot better :)

I didn't have "sitting on a picture of Nelson Mandela" on my bingo card for Ottawa-area dining experiences, but here we are. Weird decor choices. Sorry, can't give this place more than two stars. Even after moving to another seat, it just wasn't that comfortable. We had tea and biscuits, but it's.... just tea and biscuits? Hard to rate a place highly because of it. The problem is that the staff struggled a bit to understand how one of us wanted a lot of oat milk to make it more of a "milk tea" type of thing. I dunno, lack of training or something? Anyways.... yeah, won't be back.

The espresso in my latte was a huge miss, very bitter and unbalanced, likely due to over-extraction or dirty machine. The fruit tart looked great, but everything from the glaze to the custard tasted overly sweet, especially as the fruits used were already on the sweeter side. Normally the fruits are supposed to counterbalance the sweet with tart. The shell itself was also over-baked, tasting dry and crumbling excessively when trying to break a piece off with a fork.

My daughter had her bridal shower here in July 2023. The atmosphere was amazing. The service was great - shout out to Lizzie :) Claudy and her staff went out of their way to make the event special giving us time to set up, replying to any requests we had and just basically making the whole experience wonderful. I took out a 7” Ferrero Rocher cake for my anniversary. I was told its at most one day old. The taste was pathetic and not at all worth the $38. It was also stale. After speaking over phone with Liora at the cafe she did confirm the 7” cakes can be a bit older and lying for a few days before they are sold. On asking for a refund or store credit I was simply denied. I have always ordered from their other branch at preston and never faced this issue. But I am not going there again and would never recommend this to anyone.

Gotta say, prompting a 20% tip is a bit rich when there is no wait service: you order at the counter, you go up to claim your order, and then they ask you to bring your own dishes up to a bus table. What is this assumption for 33% increases of the standard tipping rates with NO service? Wanted to try this place out and ordered the chicken breast panini, but sold out, so went with the chicken salad one. It tasted like cat food and rancid bacon. I have been sick since lunch yesterday. My wife tried the pancetta and brie but it had extremely bitter greens on it, so she left it. My Americano and her latte and mocha cake were fine. But my lemon tart also tasted off. Love the decor of this place and the food. But service takes too long, orders take too long to be filled. Have been 5 times. The last 4 times always an issue getting order. Behind the counter is not coordinated. The person taking order sometimes is also getting the order and then becomes a lineup. Have seen sometimes 3 or 4 women behind the counter but only 1 or 2 doing anything. Last time coffee order screwed up for 2 people and then server forgot to give us our dessert order.

I've been to Carmelito Cafe at least 4 times and I have to say the staff needs to be trained in customer service. Three of the 4 times I stood at the counter watching staff members on their phones ignoring me. Another person took my order, took my money, took a sandwich out of the showcase, put it in the sandwich warmer and then went on break while the other staff girl stayed on her phone and ignored me. I had ordered desserts as well. Not going back!

Staff can be a little slow and I had one experience where she was on the phone while I waited for my esspressom. About 5 minutes. That was one employee though. Everything else about this cafe is great. The drinks are well done and fair priced as well as their desserts. The atmosphere is a mix between Italian cafe and English "high tea time" so it's different but I like it. Lots of seating and they are also licensed with liquor! You should give them a try, it's a hidden gem!

This is absolutely my favorite cafe to frequent! The atmosphere is amazing here and so is their drinks and food. I particularly like their sandwiches and desserts, they offer a wide variety and are always delicious. I definitely recommend the Prosciutto & Brie sandwich, and their Cheesecakes are to die for. The staff is also very welcoming and offer quick service. I believe the barista serving me was Madison, and she was very friendly and accommodating.

Such a great space to get some work done in the evenings, good ambiance, staff is always kind. Well lit with excellent mix of furniture. I have ordered custom cakes couple of times from Carmeletios at Barrhaven and was very happy with the delicious and fresh cakes. I would recommend the Raspberry Lemon for summer time . So melt in your mouth light, with fresh cream and perfect sweetness ( not too sweet) A very delicate flavour of Lemon and Raspberry. Perfect for summer! I also ordered Grand Marnier cake for a special occassion and got it customized. Loved the chocolate ganache icing on it.

A nice little option in Barrhaven for treats and coffee! The staff are always quite standoffish and cold though — for instance they’ll make you stand awkwardly at the cash for five minutes before even greeting you, even though they’re standing RIGHT there. They’re always quite young too so might just be that they don’t have much customer service experience yet. Still, delicious pastries and I enjoy their patio.

What's not to like in this mango mousse cake? Green raspberries, last year sun dried strawberries, unset gelatin, woodsy mango mousse and old dry sponge. The Oreo cup is just whipped cream with Oreo crumble. Got 6 desserts on 2 different occasions. Black forest, mille feuille, tiramisu were all underwhelming. Lemon meringue was the only one edible. This the only reason why I'm not giving it 1*. And I thought the Preston St location was bad....ha.

My 5 year old loves putting on her fancy dress and having cake at Carmelito Cafe. We just love the decor. We usually get a slice of cake and canolli, both are always delicious. ***Edited add a review of our most recent visit My husband took our daughter there for a treat and they sat in a back corner. He said an older woman who works there came over and wiped the same table the whole time while looking over at them. It was awkward.

A very cute space with adorable decor. The hazelnut latte was tasty though rather sweet. The Carmelito chocolate cheesecake was good and quite sweet; would go well with a non-flavoured latte/cappuccino. When you're done, be sure to put your used dishes in the designated bins. Cute place. Worth a visit

Such a cute cafe !!! This place is a gem and the staff is just as delightful. The decor is vintage and so unique and colorful, you won’t think you’re in barrhaven. Their drinks are delicious and the desserts are so yummy! The place is very spacious with seating outside and inside (the inside is soooo cute). They also offer high tea, which I’ll be looking forward to trying. Definitely worth the visit !

I enjoyed my first visit to Carmelito. The decor and choice of treats were beautifully presented. Cosy Christmas vibe. My second visit was disappointing as the sandwich and coffee were not what I expected (a little mix- up: if you're soft spoken make sure the staff know what you're ordering).

Giving order and getting your order correctly is a nightmare. Do not forget what you ordered cuz in the receipt there are no items you ordered only total. We ordered 4 cappuccino. I am totally in love with this place, to a point that I went twice the same day, I even invited two friends that came from Montreal to enjoy this "petite merveille". I definitely recommend if you're stopping by the National Capital . The coffee is amazing and such friendly service. There's a wide variety of homemade as well. I absolutely adore Carmelito café. The pastries are always fresh and they always look so adorable. I love the ambiance of the café, the music and the decor. My boyfriend and I often come here to grab a treat and a coffee, we always grab the mini Carmelito cheesecake and the salted caramel cheesecake. I have never had a better cheesecake than i have at Carmelito, truly.

Fantastic little cafe with excellent selection and a fun vibe. We found out about this place when my husband was looking for a last minute birthday cake and this cafe went above and beyond. Barrhaven as a whole lacks character and Carmelito cafe is a breath of fresh air in a bland suburbia.

The environment is really nice. That said, the cost of their coffee and desserts is a little bit higher when compared to elsewhere, and the service is pretty disorganized and a tad rude. The kids need to learn a little bit of client service, and maybe it's a generational thing but management should keep this in check.

A cozy place with a great ambiance! The decor is quite retro and the setting is really great for old friends to catch up and have some good coffee and rich dessert. You can skip dinner. I found the staff friendly but not quite helpful. With a handful of customers they seemed overwhelmed.

The stars I gave are only for the decoration and atmosphere and because we don't have many places like this in Ottawa. Other than that, the coffee and drinks are very bad! Food is trash! Service is extremely slow and messy, and you serve yourself eventually.

One of the best coffee places in town. They many options of pastries, cakes and sweets. The interior design is so beautiful. And people are super friendly at the counter. Try the Lobster Tail, my favorite there.

Lovely lovely place. Delicious food, amazing decor, good staff. The owner is almost always there and very caring. We also had an event there and we are very proud of how it turned out! So happy to be supporting a local business. The negative reviews I’m reading are really not aligning with my experience.

Really cute café.. great decor and ambiance. They offer pastries, sandwiches, and beautiful cakes and desserts. Prices are comparable to others. We got the frittata, almond croissant, opera cake, iced coffee, and an americano.

Lots of dessert options but the one that really stands out is always the lobstertail full of delicious cream. The atmosphere feels dated and awkward but a fine place to stop if you’re in the area. I prefer the Preston St. location.

We are regulars here, we prefer the after hours when the place is still full but t as loud. The coffee is great; the pastries are delicious but the cakes are to die for! Nothing negative to report of.. go there for your daily chill or your friendly gathering. You won’t regret it

Amazing lattes and drinks. Delicious pastries and cakes too. We can't wait to go for a light lunch of sandwiches or salads next week. Ordered a beautiful Carmelito cheesecake for a birthday next week. We're so happy to have this little local delight within walking distance.

We had the high tea experience and the manager was very very rude to us! We were very kind and they served us vegetarian instead of vegan which made one of us sick. The food and the experience was fun! But the service was not friendly.

It’s a nice cafe to spend sometime, they offer different cold and hot drinks, donates, cakes, snack, cookies and more. It’s designed on a way that will take you to the past with an amazing feeling. If you are someone looking for a modern cafe it’s not your place then.

Great coffee! We had the cortado as well as a mocha. The croissant was very good as well. Would be better not warmed up though. Lovely atmosphere to sit down and enjoy a moment of peace.

This is the cutest café I've ever been to! Everything from the service to the food was incredible. Best tiramisu I've ever had and the other desserts were so delicious. I can't say enough about the decor, you will feel like you went to have high tea in England.

Have the audacity to ask for tip before making food. Asked if for here or to go and then proceeded to still give me a to go cup. Got the order wrong as well. Looks like a decent place but service is terrible. Not recommend

What a lovely, quaint coffee shop tucked away amongst the suburbs of Longfields in Barrhaven! The coffee is good, and beautiful interior that makes it very welcoming. Next time I go I will be sure to stick around and enjoy it a bit more. Thank you.

Hidden gem in the middle of new community. Great atmosphere, interior is cozy retro, stuff is very friendly, cakes are sooo delicious!! It was so good to meet a friend in such amazing place, and I grabbed some pastry to eat later)) Recommend!!

This cafe environment is quite good with big space at Barrhaven area. But the cakes are not fresh enough thus not tasty, though look okay. Hopefully this can be improved as soon as possible, otherwise, I won't want to go any longer.

Strange little cafe, very cluttered both in furniture and items for serving like cups and plates. Friendly service and good drinks but definitely over cluttered in decor and other items, feels claustrophobic
