"Very helpful & friendly staff"
"Quite a large library stuffed into a small entrance on Flinders lane"
"one of my favourite places in Melbourne, great hours, good resources, friendly staff - plus art and piano playing and a cafe right there"
"Their system adhering to Covid 19 safety guidelines is 10/10"
"This is a great place to take a breather in the CBD - it's free, there are plenty of books to sit and peruse, there are clean bathrooms, and it's not too crowded"
Very helpful & friendly staff. Too many homeless people who spend all day everyday there, and they smell. The free WiFi is really slow most of the time. The carpet needs to be steam cleaned as it is filthy and stinks. The toilets need to be thoroughly cleaned as they are quite filthy most of the time. Apart from those complaints, the facilities are fantastic, range of books are great and the piano playing is beautiful. The Thursday evening performances are really impressive. PLEASE: do a big spring clean of the place.
Quite a large library stuffed into a small entrance on Flinders lane. There are computers available to use, study areas, reading areas and plenty of books !! Self checkout is great, and you can reserve books online and receive a text when they are ready to pick up, then you can find them on the reservation shelves with your name on a slip of paper in the book. There is also an after hours book return chute.
one of my favourite places in Melbourne, great hours, good resources, friendly staff - plus art and piano playing and a cafe right there. If you have some time w nowhere to go- it is perfect. Plus they are kind about limited library cards if you don't have proof of address, but do have ID. It is a home away from home and I send all my reserves there because they have better hours than other branches.
Their system adhering to Covid 19 safety guidelines is 10/10. The staff were so friendly. As the public couldnt browse the books in the library, the staff have mystery goodie bags with 3 or 4 books inside - you select your genre and get a lucky dip! I thought it was a fantastic service and took two bags home to keep me entertained throughout lockdown. Staff were so friendly & helpful :)
This is a great place to take a breather in the CBD - it's free, there are plenty of books to sit and peruse, there are clean bathrooms, and it's not too crowded. The kids area is small but has books, blocks and colouring sheets. The only drawback here is that the library's collection is quite small, although it's diverse (you can borrow games in addition to the standard offerings).
I had the worst experience with the "security" person near the front. I was asking a simple question of where something was and was spoken to in an extremely condescending manner. I honestly I didn't feel safe throughout the interaction. He watched me intently and barraged me with unnecessary questions. I've never felt this way with any of the other libraries in the city.
There are a lot of space and seats for you to either get work done quietly, read a book, or even sleep! Haha It’s definitely a safe space for many people here. It’s kept very clean and organised. They offer free WiFi here - easy to log on and works great. The process to get a library card was very easy and the staff was more than keen to help! Love it here :)
Great location and great (very helpful and courteous) staff with a wide range of books, magazines, newspapers, CDs, DVDs, video games, e-resources and good study areas - the lot! The study areas can get very crowded, but the main things that need to be tackled are the lack of natural light and very poor ventilation (can get a bit stuffy and smelly at times).
The City Library on Flinders Lane is a book lover’s sanctuary and a great place to take refuge from a weary walk or to find a tranquil place to study. There are rooms designated for silent studying and others purposed for group work. A great place to accumulate knowledge, and a wonderful public space well worthy of taxpayers’ funding.
It's a nice place to study alone or with your friends ... Its a bit quiet so ya you have your time and silence from the city here .... They have a gallery as well here . You can be a member of the city library as well for free i guess and the staffs are also friendly but the down side is that the Library closes so early around 6
Great layout. Many books to choose from. Has upstairs which has study spaces, lift access, more books, conference, room, Nice little art gallery, computer access. Downstairs has a disabled lift which accessing more books and study space, usable computers. The entrance has a nice little cafe as well as outside restaurants etc.
Excellent customer service and you can use the computer for an hour should you need to do some office work. Printing is $0.20 per page (b/w). A great place to hang out on a cold and miserable Melbourne winter afternoon and there is a cafe on ground level. While it can get quite noisy at times, there is a quiet study room.
Nice library in the heart of CBD area, quite small but have great selection of books, newspaper and magazine. Good service friendly staff , fast wifi, tap water are provided. Perfect place for study, if you need quite room its available on 1st floor. The cheapest place to print in town 0.20 cents for black and white.
My first visit and was rather impressed with the service they provided. Very friendly, patient and professional. The gentleman at the membership desk was very helpful and even took me to the section that I was looking for. I will certainly go back again and recommend this place to all my friends. Thank you Melbourne!
Easy to locate, close to public transport, tucked in an alleyway of interesting cafés. Spotless inside. Cute-sized, nothing luxurious and extravagant but there's almost everything you'll possibly need. Staff members are friendly and approachable. Sanitisers are in all corners for usage. Mask is required at all time.
Good variety of magazines available and plenty of desks with power outlets to charge your phone and laptop. Lately it seems to attract a few homeless people and other questionable characters using the area to nap. Does smell a bit funky in a few corners. Reasonably quiet for the couple of times I visited.
A small but popular children's section with lots of fun educational books and a few toys also. The adults books collection is diverse and enticing. There is a cafe and a public piano, as well as a regularly changing exhibition space on level two - more than books to entice those who love to learn!
Great library, conveniently located in the bustling Flinders Lane/Degraves St precinct, friendly and accommodating staff and a good range of resources - both multimedia and print. Well designed use of space and good study areas in a light setting that facilitates effective work.
Going to the city with the plan to just look at new places (for me), I saw the sign and walked in. Obviously been here for awhile but I’m all for maintaining and promoting libraries. A space to sit, browse, connect, take a breath and not have to pay or even talk to anyone.
This is exactly what you want from a city library. Amazing collection, easy order and pick-up, great reading and study spaces, accessible toilets and art/music space. Staff will order in books, CDs or DVDs if not in the collection already. Another reason to love Melbourne.
You can only use the computer for 1 hour. After that you can login for30 minutes and that's it. Pretty annoying to log in again and no option to stay longer if you got some important stuff to do. Pretty small library for the spot in the CBD. Staff nice and helpful.
This is a wonderful place with an excellent collection, comfortable amenities and helpful and friendly staff. It is also free and generous with borrowings. If you are a reader you must be a member of this precious gem. Congratulations to the City of Melbourne.
Good venue, wifi is too slow during peak hours, okay for general text surfing but don't waste your time with video. Recommend buying/bringing your own wifi dongle or tethering to your phone. Quiet rooms are good and are actually quiet. Great central location.
Good library that is walking distance from Flinders Station. Not as big as the state library near Melbourne Central but it has good selection of books spanning multiple levels. I only wish they'd be open for longer on the weekend instead of closing at 5pm.
I have been using their service for 4 years now. Zero problem or frustration about the system, small but very effective one, recommend for international students who want books for studying English. Hope I have time to read more. Thank you, City library.
The library is quite old and it smells a bit funny, come baby storytime a million prams attempt to use one small lift causing a mini traffic jam is not fun. That being said the staff there are amazing, especially the ones who conducts storytime.
I was greeted nicely by team members at the front desk. The registration of new members is done upstairs, and was quick online process. All You need is the ID and address proof. You can use the library computers for that and immediately got
It's quite good. Could be better. Trying to find anything in the non fiction area is really difficult to navigate. The piano is great. There's internet. Lots to do. Good toilets. It could use better relaxation lounge areas. Worth a visit.
Good place to study, but WiFi a bit too slow. I can't watch my lectures online because of the poor connection. Other than that, pretty quiet place to study. And the cafe next door is good too if you need a little cuppa break.
Saved this place as my favorite library in the city! Got all kinds of books in all languages you can find! Great location, enjoy the gourmet and cafe downstairs. lovely vibe. You can even play PS games here!
If you are in Melbourne you cannot missing this City Library, it's an amazing space inside the city. Staff is always friendly and helpful. It's present a good selection of book, dvd and cd and much more.
Staff were really lovely and helped me set up my account and get me a library card. Medium/large selection of books otherwise others book were at other branches of the library not too far from the city
They've got a piano that is publicly available to play! You just have to check what time it's available because it's not all day. And it's not for practice. Only for pieces you can already play.
I had almost forgotten the pleasure to be found in browsing a display of books, finding a title I would never have looked for, and then borrowing it. Our lending libraries are city treasures.
the study room is great (despite there is constant noise outside of the window. maybe there is a construction site nearby). It is the best place I can find to study in the CBD of Melbourne.
Website showed the library as open on Monday. In actual fact it was closed. Spent half an hour on a tram with a bunch of passengers. That I didn't appreciate in the current circumstances
That's how the modern library should be: welcoming, attractive, connected and lively. This is an oasis even for travellers and a great public good! Keep it up and open!
Can borrow a lot of books in different languages. Staffs who help with people joining the library are friendly and willing to answer all sorts of questions.
Great community resource - wifi, dvds, books, computers, gallery, cafe. Would've given 5 stars but a little croweded atm and Docklands library is better.
since a few months ago restricted youtube videos are now blocked if accessed on a library pc, but not on their wifi network. go figure this stupidity out
As Melbourne is a City of Literature, a public library is essential, and Melbourne City Library offers so many events and much knowledge local and beyond
It's a good little library in the heart of Melbourne. However check the times directly from the Library website as it does not open at 6am on weekends.
Busy library, but still has a great range of magazines, books and comics. If you work in the city it's a great a pick up point for any reserved books.
Easy as traveller to access 20mins on computer free and scan free and print off documents(small fee) what a great asset to this city. Friendly staff.
Right in CBD, with over 20+ PCs for public use, even for visitors. Petite but adequately stocked with good variety of books, including large prints.
It is a brilliant place to find some space to do work when in city, computers available, choice of books and desks with power to charge your devices
Great selection of books... good online service. We just book online and collect on the way to flinder street station... conveniently located.
Very relaxing and modern design. Great selection of books large anime and manga section, graphic novels, cds, video games and consoles.
One of my favourite places. Great collection. Nice space. The rooms get booked out with students and others over the weekend though.
Great library helpful friendly and knowledgeable staff welcoming atmosphere great selection of books safe reading ànd study space
Great library, excellent dvd section as well. Lovely design, more like a gallery than a library and right in the centre of town.
"The staff at This Library are friendly and knowledgeable, always ready to assist with research or recommend a great read."
Staff were fantastic and very helpful. The library is huge with many floors, free Wi-Fi and plenty of space for working.
It may not have the beauty of the State Library, but the staff and selection are excellent. Good place to work from too.
Great place to work (with noise cancelling earphones) and sometimes there's the bonus of hearing a pianist practicing.
Great study spaces upstairs and even a hot water tap in the lunch room! Friendly staff as well! ☺️ would recommend!
Friendly staff and user-oriented policy, that's the library of the most livable city in the world you can ask for.
This library is a haven for book lovers, with a vast collection of literature spanning various genres and eras."
Stop by the mezzanine for Berlioz on piano Toulouse on the bass, long ribbons running the gallery wall upstairs
Super friendly staff and a great collection. If they haven’t got a book they will happily order it in for you.
Very pleasant with piano lessons playing, reading was never been such a calm time for me in libraries before.
The Library itself is alright but security guard keeps following people around for no reason VERY VERY creepy
I love this library, great location. Nice live piano music filling the space. I got 2 great books to read.
Very small library but good wifi! Nice cafe at the entrance too good place to study if you can find a seat
The place did not feel very hygienic, otherwise great space to see some art exhibition on the first level.
Nice and quite place, free wifi, free access to computers, large collection of books, located in the CBD.
Fantastic place to go for having a quiet moment in CBD. Staff are friendly and service is really good.
A quiet oasis in the heart of the city. Friendly helpful staff and plenty of space to study and read.
Friendly staff, easy printing service. They also provide COVID test kits for anyone who needs them.
Very nice, easy access to free wifi which is also very fast!! Some game consoles are here as well
A good library with various spaces up and down stairs with books, computers, rooms and a piano.
Great place, very good atmosphere for studying or any task, tidy, clean and the staff are nice
The city library is a good place to go and hang either to relax or do some important things.
Wonderful environment, beautiful spot for grabbing foods or beverages nearby. Lovely …
i love studying in this library because people often play the piano and it's beautiful :)
great library great opening hours reliable internet speed good facilities great stuff :)
Way too many homeless people who spend all day everyday there and feel unsafe sometime.
The best library with best staff, every library staff is very welcoming and helpful.
All the facilities are good, especially quiet other languages corner and the piano.
I don't usually buy books because you can get them here free. Great library chain.
Great range of resources but still uses monetary penalties unlike some libraries.
This place have lots of range of resources and very cosy. I love spent time here.
There is a nice place. But there has some homeless some times because it be city.
it was really awesome I found those books which I was looking for really fabulous
Friendly and helpful staff, even when the sudden system shutting down on them.
Friendly staff, convenient space, that is what public library should be like!
Smallish library with great facilities. I found the internet very fast here.
Another library that tries to kick you out before official closing time!
Great selection of books and magazines and it has a mini gallery as well
Great community resource, full of happy, helpful, patient staff …
Great place to stop in and do work. Upper floor had more free desks.
Love the free wifi, friendly staff, use of pic's and many books :)
Fantastic services. Ebooks, audio books, free WiFi. 5 Mbps up/down
The staff here is patient and nice. A really good place to study.
I enjoy my time here. One of the best libraries in the country.
Easy loan n return ....little bit hard to find book want......
a nice place to study, friendly and helpful staff and guards
The public piano is great, some wonderful ambience at times.
I love the city library! It has everything you could want!
