Steven has absolutley no idea what he is talking about, I have never heard so much uneducated verbal diarrhea in my life, after being told im Wrong for being interested and liking a product that has sentimental value to me and my family was appalling. Never will I shop here while he is working here He also tried to sell his "real quality gear" to my friend, "but its at home being serviced", Gear from the late 80s" not mid 70s, which is what she wanted . No warranty thru the store" had to pay in cash and he would deliver it. He kept asking for her number in the store, and saying he will find some real quality gear for her and that the store had none at the moment and alot of it is sold already It became quiet obvious that he was deterring customers out of the store for his own financial gain. Weeks later, Im in a local record store having a dig' and steven walks in with a classic hifi shirt on and harressed the shop keeper verbally to sell him high value records ( mint 1st pressings) that were priced well below market rate for half the advertised price. It was relentless and disgusting behaviour. I spent some time in classic hifi a while back with an old fella" he was great' really knew his 70s hifi. (Im sure he was the owner and i dont believe steven is, as he claims to be) Scary times at classic hifi if this is so P.s i find it amazing how many people know and remember steven from bad experiences.
Thank you, Ross and Sheree, for an outstanding and highly recommended audio shopping experience! You can really tell that both genuinely care about making sure their customers are looked after. Sheree responded to all my initial email enquires promptly and thoroughly, and Ross spent a healthy amount of time with me in-store going through a number of options and explaining everything clearly. Both were extremely patient and generous with their time, trying out a few different combos to make sure that I went home with a hi-fi system that met all of my budgetary and audio needs. They have a great range to cover all budgets and preferences (beginner to serious audiophile, aesthetics vs tech…) and clearly take great pride in what they have to offer. I never felt that Ross was trying to up-sell me (actually I up-sold myself!) - in fact he actively steered me away from some more expensive options if he felt they weren’t right for me. He listened carefully to what I needed and made sure that I went home happy, which I certainly have! I guess you will probably pay a little more here, but in my opinion, it is more that worth it for the comfort and confidence of knowing that you’ll go home with a beautifully refurbed product and will receive great after-sale care. Overall, I’m super excited about all of my future home hi-fi adventures, and I’ll definitely be back when it’s time to upgrade!
Don't go to these guys for turntable repairs! I brought my vintage turntable in for repairs a few months ago and they did such a poor job that I had to get it fully serviced (including belt and cable replacements) by someone else just last week. The prices Classic Hifi charge are ridiculous - over $200 when I got a much better service from a fantastic repair guy in Kensington for only $75 and the repair took two days and (not nearly one month!). As an aside the customer service was atrocious - the guy I initially spoke to one phone was incredibly sarcastic and rude, refused to tell me how long the turntable would take to service even after 2 weeks (the words 'how long is a piece of string' were used) and couldn't even tell me what was wrong with it. I understand that they don't even do their own servicing anyway but subcontract it out to someone, but it would be incredibly easy for them to follow up on a customer's behalf. It was only after I was incredibly pushy that they changed their tune and started providing more responsive customer service (the owner Ross got involved) - the turntable was suddenly miraculously ready for pickup within days! I wasn't going to write a review but after realising that I had been gipped out of $200 for a job that required a redo mere months later, I thought I would warn other turntable owners to stay away and take their business elsewhere.
Sheree and her partner helped me with a few questions I had about a 70s model record player / hifi system I'd inherited. As a casual listener my main concern was to make an informed decision without effecting the original integrity of the player. I wanted to talk to someone face to face and watch them physically explain the pieces to me - which is what Sheree was able to provide, taking some time and patience with me :) Weighing up my options I decided not to wait for an old style stylus to be ordered / imported, so left the team to update my cartridge. A little nervous going home but on attaching the updated head, cleaning my old system, and re stripping some wires Ive ended up with a sound so clear I got quite emotional (in a good way!). I never remember the sound being this great as a kid, and now have much more confidence in continuing to maintain this quality moving forwards thanks to the chat with Sheree. I wouldn't have had this confidence if buying blindly online. Hopefully things continue to run smoothly, but if I encounter any further hiccups or replacement needs I'll be coming back to visit!
Just some feedback for the team. I took my Thorens turntable in to be fixed. I was charged $130. Fair enough, but then I was told weeks later it couldn't be fixed and the motor part was impossible to get. You were in a hurry for me to get it out of the shop - it was taking up space. I then found a Thorens repairer in Alexandria who fixed the turntable in two days. The problem was not the motor at all - there were a number of electronic faults. He also advised that the way the turntable had been pulled apart and put back together had nearly resulted in it not being able to be repaired. Very clumsy he said and they obviously haven't bothered to get the spec sheet. Anyway, just some feedback. If you don't know how to fix it, don't charge the deposit fee, or perhaps offer to return it. Of course you don't have to, but you could have. Still, you sell great gear and in great condition. By the way, he wasn't denigrating you...and he's not a competitor. He was just letting me know. No big deal and no-one's conspiring against you. Perhaps I should have emailed you direct. It's just some honest feedback.
The golden years of HIFI were the 70's, the neo renaissance. A couple of years ago, I took my Poineer SA7500 amp (that had seen some serious usage and bent rusty speaker terminals) in to be fixed, and Roy showed me a beautiful sparkly polished one that had already been refurbished, and demoed it with a Nakamichi LX-3 tape deck. I bought it, and he gave me a great trade in for my old amp. I kicked myself afterward for not buying the tape deck too. It was marvelous. Too late I inquired about the deck, but alas it had gone. Since then Roy sourced a Nak 1000 that I bought, with a pair of Krix bookshelf speakers. The peace of mind you get with a warrantee is awesome when purchasing older equipment, especially with tape decks. I had some issues with the Nak 1000, and took it in, Roy lent me a Nak 582 to use while the 1000 was being fixed. I was so impressed, I bought the 582 as well. Ross and Sheree are lovely people, and really give good customer service. I go in their shop just to talk to lovely people about stuff I love. If you like HIFI, you will not regret a visit to their shop.
I don't normally care for writing reviews, but actually went out of my way on this one to share my experience. Absolutely DISGRACEFUL customer service. I bought an amplifier from these guys, advertised as being "recently serviced" - like everything else they sell. Took it home only to find it was completely distorted. Took it back in, and waited two and a half weeks for the repair job to happen. After going back in to pick it up, the staff member hooked it all up for me, only for it to still be distorted - turned out the distortion was caused from the turntable he had hooked up which he clearly had no idea how to use/set up. Took the amp home again and hooked it up, only to find that there was a terrible static sound now happening. Made yet another trip back into the shop, only to be told that they wanted "to get rid of me". DISGUSTING! Rather than offer me store credit, a trade for another amp, or actually explain to me what the problem was, they wanted me completely gone. Took my refund and will absolutely never return or recommend anyone to visit this joke of a business.
Went in years back to get a new cheap cartridge (at95) for a pioneer turn table i recently bought, the bloke (i think owner) told me mate, you're rocking a dope ortofon cartridge so don't replace it, he then showed me how to service the turntable, clean the points on the cart and fix some cables. let me use their tools and parts to do it, and didn't charge me a cent. Still works great to this day maybe 5 years later. Bought a bunch of records there with the money i would have spent . I feel most of the negative reviews are from posers who want the flex of having old gear but don't appreciate the hobby. Sometimes 40 year old gear can't be easily fixed, sometimes it won't be reliable, you need to be realistic with your expectations, most in this hobby do it because they want to fix it, that's almost the point of vintage gear, that it breaks a lot. I can't recommend this place highly enough. Amp and turntable still going strong to this day. Sending my mate in to fix his turntable in the coming weeks. I just wish i lived closer!
DONT WASTE YOURE TIME! The young boy (ryan) with long hair that wears the round female glasses and clothing, is a heavy advocate for the use of illegal substances and legalizing marijuana, he is by the far the worst customer service ive never gotten. He spends his day on Facebook and would rather express his extreme feminism views and that all men are pigs" (i just wanted to see some amps) He also loves talking about the use of illegal substances rather than hifi. He is clearly using this job to express his political views on would be customers. Then when i ask how much a product is in the cabinet, he tells me to go buy it from elsewhere online... Which is disgusting and extremely unprofessional. Never have i seen such an ignorant person destroy the owners business in such a way..
I have bought a couple of items from here and had items repaired. I find the service reliable and attentive. Ross and Sheree are lovely to deal with. They want to make sure you are happy. Items have been serviced and you do get trustworthy, old-school customer service. You are buying items that are typically 20-40 years old, so there is a cost to that, as should be expected for anyone interested in quality vintage Hi-fi.There is a good variety of high end and more entry level gear, to satisfy customers from all interest levels. In love with my Technics SA-5370 receiver and JVC SK-700ii speakers. Both items were bought without testing and they were impecable! If you love vintage HiFi, as do the owners, this is definitely a good spot for purchasing gear and getting repairs.
I brought my Luxeman PD-277 Turntable in for repair last week. It was still functioning, but had occasional speed variance and warbling issues. After classic hi fi had it for over a week, they reported back an extremely overpriced repair fee of a minimum of $450 to replace the caps and service the turntable. After I said i did not want to go ahead, they refunded the initial repair deposit of $145. However, once i got the turntable home i had since discovered it no longer works AT ALL! I have since received a repair quote from a competitor to replace the caps, service the turntable and repair whatever the hell classic hi fi did to my turntable for $200-250. In short, don't trust classic hi fi with your classic hi fi's - they don't repair them, they break them.
Amazingly warm, patient, approachable & knowledgeable customer service. Ross & Sheree were such a delight and very accomodating. Please disregard the non-5 star reviews, these guys are truly great. I went in to repair a turntable of mine and ended up trading it in for a much better turntable. Ross & Sheree were busy in the store on the day that I visited. Despite this they still made sure I was looked after with a great amount of care. They truly went above and beyond. Their passion for vintage hi-fi is infectious as they're both so knowledgeable. It was such a treat being given such high quality of customer service. If you're looking for well-serviced vintage hi-fi, don't hesitate paying them a visit and check out their amazing stock.
If you're looking for the best equipment and want solid and sound advice then this is absolutely the place you should go for it. No over sell here either!!! I went in knowing what I was looking for. Ross set everything up for me and I was over the moon with the sound in the showroom. I'm a vinyl DJ / collector and have wanted a good amp and turntable for quite some time now for home listening. I left with a beautiful Pioneer amp and a stunning Technics turntable. Once home it was an easy set up and Ross was spot on about the speakers! I had Klipsch References at home and Ross matched a similar set of speakers he had in store. Sound was great in store and is just perfect at home. 5 star service. Thanks guys!
My 10 year old turn table recently needed some repairs. I had been into Classic Hi-Fi to buy some vinyl and an amplifier and decided that it was time to invest in a good quality turn table. It was a pleasure to meet and felt a complete sense if trust with RJ when I invested in a new Marantz turn table. I needed to confirm some details on the unit and went back two days later and was served by Ross & his lovely wife Sheree. They were amazing with their support , care and advice. The whole experience was outstanding, could not fault in anyway. I felt completely looked after and connected well with each person who provided remarkable customer service. All the very best RJ, Ross & the lovely Sheree. Craig
One of the best shopping experiences! I visited this store with my partner over the weekend looking to set up a new system. Initially we just went in with a few questions but the owners really took the time to talk us through each part of the set up and even let us test out different combinations of turntables, amps and speakers to find the sound that we enjoyed the most. We never felt pressured to buy anything and they were more than happy to help put together a system that was within our budget. Their stuff might be more expensive than online but the service and quality of the products makes this value for money!!!! Wouldn’t shop anywhere else!
recently purchased a Kenwood tk-250 amplifier for my turntable setup from here. while the price steeper than places like marketplace or gumtree, the service and expertise from Ross and Sheree, and their store & product range was absolutely unmatched. the option to sit and listen with my own gear to test my new amp is just something you can't really find anywhere else in sydney, not to mention with the quality of Classic HiFi's products that they sell I will be back, I'm very glad I ended up purchasing through here, the TK250 sounds absolutely amazing. I absolutely cannot recommend these guys enough !
Just went on the website to pick out a an amp, speakers and record player, budget was $1500. Every single item I looked at, EVERY SINGLE ITEM has no price and is listed as “price on application”. What? You want me to call or email you to find out the price of every item i might be interested in? Or is this some kind of weird auction house? I concluded that this means 1 of 2 things. 1) The owner adjusts the price of items based on how much he thinks he can get out of each person. 2) he’s just lazy and can’t be bothered to keep his website up to date. Either way, I’ll be taking my $1500 elsewhere.
Classic Hi Fi does great work at an acceptable price. However, some of their customer policies are a little ruthless. I discovered recently that they will put your repaired equipment on the sales floor if it is not collected within three weeks, and they only provide a single notification to advise your repair is complete. So if you miss that text message, you're out of luck - no warning call or text message. The text message encourages you to collect your repair 'as quickly as possible' but does not reiterate the cut-throat time limit. They use fine print as a crutch.
I can't help but feel that some of the reviews here are quite unfair. I attended this store last Sunday, and bought a full system from these guys. I believe I was served by the owner, who was friendly, helpful, very knowledgable and passionate about the area of vintage hi-fi. He spent 3 hours with us helping us find the perfect setup. If you do not have a similar passion for vintage hi-fi, or an appreciation for the type of sound 70's equipment can produce, then this is not the shop for you. Stick to JB-HiFi, your Jonas Brothers and your plastic computer speakers.
You want great service and servicing then you have come to the right place?Ross, Sheree and Gavin who did my servicing are without doubt excellent. I took an aged but much loved Reference hydraulic Tuntable in to Classic Hi Fi and this had certainly seen better days, with a faulty motor, corrosion and blemishes of all types. The result when Gavin had finished went beyond my wildest expectations and now is playing as though new. Thanks Classic Hi Fi for a truly excellent job. Thoroughly recommend if you hadn't guessed!
We were just passing & dropped by to inquire about a CD we were having difficulty tracking, and also to ask some advice about a hifi set-up bought from another shop a week earlier. With nothing to gain from speaking to us, Ross went out of his way to help, explaining some basics about speaker positioning & offering a few trouble-shooting tips. He demonstrated his points by turning on some of the equipment in store, giving us both his time and his knowledge. We genuinely appreciated your help, Ross. A1 service!
I was given a turntable which had been in storage many years, it worked but played noticeably slower than 33rpm. Called to explain and was told it's probably the belt. So I took it in and the very helpful store owners refitted a new belt for me, tested it and got it working perfectly. They only charged me for the belt - now that's great friendly service. At some stage I'll be back to replace my amp with something from their range of quality products.
Awful customer service. Had a friend of mine go in to the store this afternoon to try pick me up a new stylus. Was doing everything I could to try and transfer information to and from them so they could make sure they got the right cartridge, to which the man working proved to help in no way possible - understandably asking if I could bring the cartridge in but doing so in the worst way possible. Sort yourselves out. Horrible people behind the desk.
I was lucky enough to find Classic Hifi Newtown recently. The help I have received both at purchase and since has been invaluable. Their service went over and above the norm. Ross and Sheree spent time with me in their sound room, working with me on not just sound quality (within my budget ) but also on my need for something that aesthetically would fit nicely in a mid century home….with kids!! I cannot thank them or recommend classic hifi enough ..
Absolutely brilliant. Best service. Clarity, expertise and courtesy. Repaired an heirloom hifi unit to perfection with professionalism common sense and old school charm. Not all tech issues are solveable with vintage hi fi but in this case it was. I almost want something to break again purely for the pleasure of dealing with this fine company again. They have heaps of quality vintage systems ready to sell. Everybody should go in and stock up!
You need to leave a $120 deposit for record player repair. Despite being told nothing was wrong with it, the total work carried out was magically equal to $120. Response to owner: Use of the word deposit gives the impression that it is not the final cost which could be higher or lower. If you rent a bike, you put down a deposit which is returned. It would be more accurate if you had communicated that $120 was the minimum cost/charge/price.
I highly recommend Classic Hi Fi for your turntable purchase. There are quite a few vintage turntable specialists in Sydney but none with quite the dedication, knowledge and passion of Ross and Sheree. They were extremely patient as I walked through a few models before settling on my JVC, and answered all my questions. The unit sounds and looks amazing and is just what I wanted. I'll be back one day to invest in an amp and speakers too.
Hard to find these shops in Sydney. Shame the guy who works on a Wednesday drives people out with his hard-sell mentality, stories about turntables only lasting a few days to get stock moving and slight patronising air etc. Great selection of vintage hi fi with prompt advice and service that's also hard to come by. Manager very dedicated but prices seem more than you'd expect to pay. Test in store before you buy.
I was a total novice and got the best walk through and service from Ross and Sheree, I would absolutely recommend (especially if you’re not experienced with record players and not sure where to start). Extremely happy with my purchase, and good peace of mind with the 6 month warranty and ability to take back for servicing and repairs after that. I was even given a free record to help start my collection.
Phoned about a turntable I saw available on their website and went in to see it the same evening. Mitch spent nearly two hours with me auditioning the unit, answering questions in a knowledgeable and friendly manner. When we identified that it could use a little fine tuning, he immediately took the unit out back to make adjustments. I left a happy and satisfied customer. Excellent service from Mitch.
A big thank you to Ross for his excellent advice and service (and his enthusiasm for quality sound!). In December after weeks of discussion and consideration we bought a cd player and preamp from Classic Hi Fi to accompany our existing amp. Ross's time, knowledge and input was hugely helpful. We are very happy with the system and will definitely be going back when we're ready to replace the speakers.
Bought a turntable from them a while back, it was defective from day 1. I brought it back a few weeks later and they told me the warranty was expired. Ridiculously short warranty. To get it fixed was a mission. The technician is only there at a certain time on a certain day and the timeframe was excessive to get it back. I went elsewhere and would never use these guys again. Terrible service.
Just reading the reviews from people who are happy and who are not, and the owner writes " No personal attack on the stores sales people " , yet anyone who gives them a bad review gets personally attacked by the stores owner! Good way of dealing with customers grievance, instead of trying to fix the problem, just attack them and make out that they are the problem, not the product.
One of the best places in Sydney to try out 60/70 sound systems. Their wall of speakers, linked to record players, CD players and technical support devices PLUS outstanding Customer Service make it easy to chose. Are they the cheapest, probably not but they are the best in town Ross and his team do not sell for the sake of $$$ They sell to make you happy And that !!!! is priceless
Absolutely blown away by both the service and the expertise I experienced in the shop. I went in knowing absolutely nothing about Hi Fi gear, and the team at Classic Hi Fi took the time to walk me through all the questions I had, as well as helping me understand how it all works. I left with some amazing gear, and an absolutely glowing review to write! Thanks again for the help!!
I had a wonderful experience at Classic Hifi. Ross and Sheree spent over an hour with me, helping me to pick out a set up that was right for my space. Not only are they extremely knowledgeable about their products but they were also kind and helpful. I would definitely recommend Classic hifi to anyone looking for excellent customer service and quality products.
Very helpful staff :) One guy showed me three turntables, hooked up to amp; he explained the finer points, and was with me for an hour and 5min past closing. Very knowledgable and useful service. Records are vintage, all turntables are fully repaired with new belts and needles, brands are Thorens, Pioneer, Rega, Sansui, American DJ, etcetera :) great place ;)
I had an amazing experience at classic hifi. Ross is extremely knowledgeable about all things record player and takes time to explain to you what he has on offer. He considers your budget and pulls something together for you with that in mind. I highly recommend classic hifi as the place to go for buying your record player, amp, speakers or all 3!
Great service from Ross. He paired me up with a beautiful 1976 wood cased Sansui receiver and some Richter Wizard 3 floor standing speakers. Topped with a 1978 Realistic Lab 400 turntable. It a pleasant shop and Ross will hook up any equipment you want to listen to. You can feel the passion. A brilliant experience if you’re into good vintage gear.
Brilliant knowledge, well stocked and friendly service. My last stylus was past its use-by. I trawled the net for a new needle. Forget it. Nothing matched... I took the cartridge into Classic Hi Fi. Instant match! Quick chat about moving coil & out the door. Now on the bus posting this. Thank you Classic, you are!
Extremely warm, friendly and professional service here. We went into the store on the weekend with a complex issue and were very pleased that the helpful owners at Classic Hi-Fi were able to help us. They went above and beyond to ensure that they did their best to help us solve our problem. Highly recommend.
Highly recommended!!! Ross has been very professional, helpful and patience. He answer to all my questions and concerns, but specially I was impressed in his passion for the turntable in all its details. I saw his eyes sparkle when the music started. Thank you so much "Rosario " Alberto and Valentina
I was very impressed by the service at Classic Hifi. I was looking for bookshelf speakers for a new set up. Everyone was really helpful - patiently showing the range by quality and price. I got what I wanted at a great price and was happy to splash out on new cabling and plugs. Highly recommended.
Fantastic store with great stock. The owners are extremely helpful and patient in helping to find the right equipment for you and take the time to fully go over the ins and outs of your new gear. Would recommend to anyone interested in classic hifi
Superb customer service and excellent turntable technician. Highly recommended! They rescued my 1988 Rega Planar 2 after two unsuccessful repairs by other hifi retailers. The Rega is singing sweetly again thanks to Classic HiFi in Newtown.
Superb customer service and an amazing selection of equipment. Ross and Sheree were so helpful with tailoring a speaker and amplifier setup that suited my needs and budget perfectly. I can’t imagine going anywhere else for HiFi in Sydney.
Such a great experience.....the owners are a joy to chat with and always love looking through their stack of quality vinyls...picked a couple up recently that are in pristine condition..... Thanks for all your hard work team …
These guys know their stuff. Very friendly, helpful and knowledgable; it was obvious they enjoyed helping us choose our new (classic) turntable, amp and speakers. And we enjoyed the experience too. Highly recommended. Thanks guys.
World of vintage Hi Fi. Amazing collection of speakers amplifiers etc. Staffs are friendly and happy to help. Prices are not cheap but it might give you peace of mind to buy from a proper shop like this which offers warranty.
They have all types of vintage hifi stuff, and the staff are super helpful, friendly, and eager to demonstrate the amp, TT, and speakers combos available. I'll be going back and recommending that others go there.
Ross and his team took incredible care in restoring my JBL L56 speakers. They now look and sound incredible. Really knowledgeable, great service all at a very reasonable price. Highly recommend.
Must visit if looking for vintage equipment. Customer service is next level and they do an amazing job helping you pick out the best setup for your situation. I’ll be going back again soon…
Absolutely wonderful experience getting my vintage LP12 serviced and upgraded. Quality and careful workmanship and great customer service. Totally recommend Ross, Sheree, Gav and the team.
If you are into vintage HI-FI there is no place better to visit. You pay for what you get, absolute quality. Vintage pieces that sound amazing, function and look new.Very impressed.
Immaculately restored vintage hifi systems. You are able to take your time, listen and compare and never feel pushed at all. Found my gems and are super happy with my new system.
Ross the owner, definitely knows his stuff! Terrific experience shopping for my hi-fi system this afternoon. 5 star customer service. Highly recommend this store. Gavin
Really incredible service. My partner had her turntable (which we initially thought was beyond repair) restored and it was beyond our wildest dreams! Highly recommend.
Ross and Sheree repaired our old style turntable record player. Efficient and courteous service would recommend them to others. Brad & Yvonne Ryder, Coogee.
A great selection of quality pre-loved hifi equipment. Discuss your requirements with the helpful, knowledgeable and enthusiastic staff. No pressure to buy.
If you're looking for a great audio system, this is place. They have a amazing range and everything is fully serviced. Also very knowledgeable advice.
Took my 1970's amplifier here for repair. Excellent service, a fair price and great communication. The amp sounds terrific. I would recommend highly.
Fantastic, welcoming and very knowledgeable service. We highly recommend classic hifi to anyone considering a top quality restored system.
The best hi-fi store in Sydney. Friendly , helpful staff and a wonderful range of quality vintage hi-fi gear. Highly recommended.
Totally fabulous experience. The guys at Classic Hi-fi went above and beyond in fixing my very complicated turntable.
Excellent store with high quality classic equipment professional refurbished with warranty. The people are lovely!
Spent 2500 on Equipment 3 years ago. About to have it repaired for the 6th time. Sold me a lemon, won’t be back.
Over priced cheap eBay finds... You'll get a better deal searching the internet
