I've stayed for 3 months here in Utah with my wife as tourists. And all the experiences of the city and the people here were brilliant. Until today. I don't drink myself, but all this time we had such a wonderful host, who enjoys wine. So I decided to get him a bottle of good Australian red wine. So when I was just about to purchase it at the register, the woman asked me for ID. Well, I'm 35 yo, and I don't carry my foreign passport for security purposes. But I presented them Rusian drivers lisence (which had English subtitles on it), International Drivers Permit (which was accepted all over the world as an official document, also in English) in original, and showed the picture of my foreign passport in my cell phone, where my name and the date of birth corresponded everywhere. So It was obviously clear I'm that person, and I'm 35. But the woman just didn't accept it. I asked for the manager, but instead of helping me, he just backed her position. We had a very unpleasant arguement in front of probably 20 customers, and I was expaining to them, I couldn't be possibly near that drinking age (21). It seemed like people, who worked there, just turned off their brain, sight and commen sense. Like mantra they were telling me for half an hour, they needed to see the PAPER PASSPORT in original. Which I couldn't possible do, because I live far away from the store, and wasn't planning to spend all my day driving back and forth only to satisfy the stupidity of the sales-person and her manager. Don't get me wrong. I'm not against the law. And I totally respect the American law, which doesn't allow to buy alcohol for if you are less than 21. But I'm against stupidity. If you see the MULTIPLE evidence, that a customer is MUCH older than the drinking age, the OFFICIAL evidence, IN ENGLISH, why you still let the person down?! Excuse me, but there are also other documents, than American Passport, American ID plastic card, American Drivers lisence, and other American stuff. There are people from Europe and other regions visiting your store and your city, and they don't want to be discriminated like that. I'm not obliged to carry my passport everywhere, just like most Americans don't do. You guys should have accepted other kinds of my ID, just like every other organization in any country would! We are planning to go back to SLC eventually, but we will never ever visit your store again!
Let me tell you, that was an experience!! I am 64 YEARS OLD and went to this store tonight to purchase some wine. I was accompanied by my 65 year old husband and his 67 year old brother. None of us had had a drop to drink when we walked in there. As I often stick my ID in my pocket rather than carry a wallet or handbag, I ended up at the store with no ID. Realizing that they ID EVERYONE, I told my husband that he would have to pay for the wine. He pulled his out and showed the cashier, who then turned to me and asked for mine. I told him that I was not carrying it, and he informed my husband that he could not sell it to him either!! Of course we were all so simple, that at that point my brother-in-law chimed in and said, "Oh, I'll just buy it". He told us that was also impossible. Why? "Because I know what you're trying to do," he replied. "Well can I just go get the wine myself and pay for it?" The cashier told us no our only options were to go purchase it at another liquor store across town, or take me home and come back to buy the wine. We left the store feeling like we had crossed into the twilight zone. As a last resort, I remembered that I had a temp paper ID. It was expired, but it showed my picture and my birth date and I thought possibly that would be acceptable, but I was wrong. We are a state/country of necessary laws which I respect and abide by. This however, was the most absurd situation, which surely is based on some new statute that would be rolled back immediately if the state were to be hosting the Olympics (for example) in the near future ... just like the laws were so conveniently changed in 2002. Conservative lawmakers in this state are such łoathesome hypocrites!!
Mainstream approach: show up on weekends or during the 11th hour preceding an upcoming holiday. Decide that this particularly frustrating visit warrants a review on Google. Neglect any prior visits that went smoothly in considering how many stars are deserved--one or two will be just fine. Relieve yourself of any personal responsibility while you tap away on that smartphone you're no longer even satisfied with since the new Apple announcement, mindlessly dumping a load of your unacknowledged insecurities on the store employees and/or state legislators, who clearly exist for no purpose other than to make you need that bottle that much more--by making it that much more of a pain to even get in the first place. I'll just point out that the parking lot can be difficult at times, but the staff is friendly and adept and the shelves stocked whenever I happen to wander into this establishment. This honest review and its somewhat disingenuous prologue may or may not stand the test of time. Much love!
I genuinely laugh at the fact I'm rating liquor stores! In Washington state, liquor sales were legalized for market stores like Fred Meyer's, Albertson's, and the like. There was a time it was liquor stores as well, but the thought of taking time to look at reviews? "Honey, let's go to the liquor store!" Reply: "I'm not sure dear. Is there one with a good rating around us?)" Folks, liquor stores are cookie cutter. The only thing that makes one stand out from another are the staff, and you won't find someone going out of their way to frequent a store for personality. However, there are 2 liquor stores near me that I have constantly searched for Jura, a Scottish liquor that I had whilst visiting friends abroad and LOVED it. Why I look when I'm in to buy alcohol, and have been told "it must not be something we can get" Well!! They had it here! Yep, I'll be going here again!
I'll give this liquor store 5 stars, but only because it is the only local place I can buy liquor so it only is really fair. I am not used to having to go to a seperate store to buy liquor being from California, so the first couple times I went here I felt kind of sketched out just because it is so busy and the way they watch you can feel kind of awkward. They sell a lot of local Utah making distillery brands which is awesome. They often have different things on sale different days or weeks but it's hard to predict. For the most part I go off what's on sale if it is close enough to what I originally was going to get. The angry orchards are pricey here. I have bought a bottle of a high rated wine here on sale but haven't bought any of the beers or things like that yet.
For what and where it is, state (L.D.S.) owned and Utah respectively, it's okay. Always tons of homeless people, but way less aggressive then the ones that swarm around the downtown liquor store. Small parking lot for how busy it is because, who would have thought that a store serving tens of thousands of people would need more then 15 parking spaces? Wild. Better then average selection compared Utah liquor stores, but if you're visiting here set your expectations low. As far as prices go every store is the same, which is to say, slightly more then average for wine, more then average for liquor, and infuriatingly expensive for beer. At sometimes more then $60 a case, it's well worth driving to Idaho or Wyoming.
Who doesnt love the liquor store. Even with over 50 people jammed in it on a Friday nigbt in sugarhouse I was only in line for no more than 5 min. The store was fully stocked and associates were working hard to restock the liquor bottles being purchased. One girl behind stocking wasn't pleasant when I asked for her to point me in the direction of the Bailey's. Kinda gave me the look like that wasn't in her job description rolled her eyes and just nodded her head towards the general part of the store and said "over there" before I could ask for a more definitive answer she had disappeared from where she was currently stocking. Sad. Any way.... Still a great store though. Bad parking but great store.
If I could have given them a rating of 100% I would have! Went this weekend, they were spot on with their social distancing. I was in and out in just a few minutes. The security person at the door was amazing! He was thorough, informative and polite. The employees did everything in their power to keep the experience sanitary yet upbeat. I felt very safe. Kudos to the staff at the Sugarhouse location!!! You guys are the greatest :) Keep up the fantastic work! Thank you for all you are doing! Cheers, Ann
The State of Utah and the DABC Dona terrible job of servicing the needs of its customers. The individual employees at this and other stores are great. But the decision makers at the DABC simply refuse to put the resources in to their stores necessary to service the demand. At every liquor store in Salt Lake county there is inadequate parking and an inadequate number of employees working at any given time. Don’t expect to get out of a Utah liquor store without at least a 15-minute wait in line
As far as government run establishments this store is pretty good. They have a good selection of beer and wine, my only complaint would have to be when is our government going to trust that its citizens are responsible enough to not need the powers to be to play God with anything they think they can make money off of. Oh sorry I forgot for a moment that we are still allowing Religion to run the government. So much for the old "Separation of Church and State". Only in America
It’s a liquor store in Utah people. It’s EXACTLY as you’d expect it to be. If you time it right - you’ll be in and out in less than 15 minutes. If not, you might join a local parish. Could go either way. Other than that, it’s reasonably priced and located in Sugarhouse. The whole Sugarhouse seems to be in scaffolding and under construction so bring your CAT and John Deere while you’re at it. Maybe my grandkids will get to see it completed but I’m not holding my breath
It's just funky. Sales and stocking ppl are awesome. Place is very busy but checkout line zooms along. Miserable parking,---but such high volume you will wait and get a spot. Small space--easy to explore new things or quickly find the familiar. In the 1970's, activists for the United Farm Workers passed out flyers to identify all the Gallo wines, which were boycotted, and this location is the one I worked. Happy memories.
If you wanna get lit, this is the place to go. You go in and get all the fun you need, and then go out. Can be busy at times though so you might have to wait a while. I hate though that they close on holidays when that is the best day to buy and consume liquor, and this place closes earlier than other places. Just plan ahead for the holidays because you don’t want to be out of liquid fun on those days.
I parked and my friend went inside the store for some liquor. While I was waiting for what it was a really short visit, I've noticed that there was one policeman looking out for customer, patrolling the parking lot keeping us safe. The visit was short due to a few factors, fast service, the beverage easy to find, good cleaning and specially the great customer service of the cashiers.
It’s too bad I can’t rate this higher, the selection, especially wine, is outstanding and the employees are top notch. However, between the lack of parking, and no one figuring out the “Enter” “Exit” signs its a slight annoyance. The deal breaker is being accosted by the exact same people in the parking lot demanding money every time we visit. Unfortunately, I now go somewhere else.
They charged me $2 extra for a bottle. When I pointed it out, the manager confirmed that the price was wrong, but said that she couldn't change the price. Either I could return it completely or take it for the $2 extra. I know for a fact that isn't true, since I've gotten prices fixed before. Clearly a training issue, but it's not really acceptable to have untrained managers.
3 stars because they're perpetually understaffed at the registers. I hate standing in lines! However, the staff is always friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. They make it worth the unfortunate wait. Also, this particular store has a wider selection of beer than the one near my house (Kearns on 5400). Sugarhouse has always had what I wanted!
It's a liquor store. Cashiers are rude because they can be and the parking there is terrible. Only person that smiled at me was the security guard. If it wasn't for the bottles of happiness they sell I would give them one star but it's almost expected to have this kind of experience at any state ran liquor store during business hours.
Almost always busy. Great location but not great parking. Time for an update. Maybe something like the new Saratoga Springs or Taylorsville DABC. Those two are bomb. You almost feel like you’re not in a small sad warehouse at the new ones. Their POSs could use an update too. No ApplePay or tap available at any location I’ve been too.
Will you see drunk homeless people fighting in the parking lot? Possibly. Will you see a homeless person run out with a box of liquor? Also possibly. Will the store be well stocked and clean? No, more like a walmart on black friday. But hey, on the bright side, it is right across the street from the best waffles in the state.
The staff are always polite and cool. It’s probably the most busy store in all of Salt Lake but they hang in there. I try to avoid going on Friday or Saturday nights after 7:00 pm because it’s so busy that the parking turns into an adventure in itself and you’ll definitely be needing a drink by the time you get out of there.
Let’s be honest, in a state with atrocious drinking laws, this business is much appreciated. Plus they have a great selection of local beers and spirits, and manage to get everyone in and out within half an hour even on their busiest days. Parking is an issue but mostly on Friday nights, especially from 6pm to close.
Cashier ran out into the parking to find me when I forgot to remove my MasterCard from the PIN pad. That's a fiver in my book. They also usually have what you're looking for. It can get rather busy on thirst Thursday and all those other burnt collegiate cliche named weekly drinking days. But still, I hate losing CCs
The state run liquor lost a star for lack of selection of whisky/bourbons . The folks that work there are so nice . A homeless gentleman was talking to staff about rocks and they were so kind to him by humoring by listening and asking questions . I ended finding a bottle I’ve not had before , so it worked out
Buying liquor in utah is always an unfortunate experience considering the liquor stores are all state run it feels like walking into a methadone clinic. An overpriced methadone clinic with a poor selection that being said this place does have a better selection than some other stores ive visited around town.
Security? And door girl were very condescending when I went into the store and continued to be mean and bad mouth me and give me dirty looks while I was shopping. I get it’s frustrating to work in the times we are in but not ok for the employees to bad mouth and be mean to shoppers. Worst employees ever.
I really didnt like this location for several reasons . First the parking is ridiculous there is hardly any. It's hard to get to it because of traffic . The atmosphere is dark and gloomy needs a remodel badly . The employees were grumpy. Their selection is 1/2 of other locations because its size small.
I hate going to this place, but they at least have a decent selection. Parking lot is designed for maximum frustration, and the 24 hour fitness across the way makes rush hour on that street a unique hell. I can really feel the punishment the Mormons intended for drinkers at this particular location.
JustTrying to understand whyThe store hours indicate they are open Monday through Saturday from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Why is it that it is 6:50 p.m.When I arriveAnd the store isClosed andNot one employee in siteWhy have store hours if you're not going toStay openDuringThe hours you have indicated
Average Utah State DABC liquor store. Mostly the same selection as the other ones around. I'm only rating as 4 stars because I think the state should get out of the business of selling alcohol and leave it to private businesses. The staff seems pretty helpful and knowledgeable at this location.
Parking lot is busy as hell, staff is courteous and helpful, selection is mediocre. You can expect to find alcohol here in its many different forms. Plastic bottles, glass and boxes can all be head with the contents of fire water. Be wise and don't drink and drive. Drink responsibly.
The services is crampy, the employees is very rude with the costumer, they have bad actitud, the prices is higher comparable to other store, the place is dirty and have to much people inside in middle of the Cov-19,. Horrible image for Utah, our companies never recommend it.
I live close so this is where i get drink. I dont go here for nice friendly people, they are not. If you value that all masks must cover nose. Then a five star is mandatory. But six by the nose police is not going to hqppen they are in your before you can say cheers mate.
Clean and organized facility. The location is super convenient. The staff were friendly. I appreciate the measures taken to safeguard customers from covid. I appreciated the manager taking time to discuss how to order international beers. I most likely will be back.
Employees are passive aggressive about me wearing a mask every single time I come to this particular location. No where else. The employees are also overly hostile to our unsheltered friends and neighbors who are just trying to survive. I avoid this location.
Cashier was súper Nice. There was a spill and the employees cleaned it right up. I like the way that this locación is organized: you walk on and they have beer on the left, easy access. Wine on the right and hatd stuff along the back wall. Conveniente!
As far as Utah liquor stores go, this one is one of the better ones. The beer selection is pretty good and they get new stuff fairly regularly. The parking is less than ideal on weekends but it's not bad if you can handle a couple minutes wait.
It's much better the one downtown, although that isn't hard. My only major issue is the parking lot. Except for at very off times you usually have to wait a few minutes to get a space. Staff is usually friendly and the selection is very decent.
Super busy as usual, but now it's worse because the fitness center across the street took over the parking lot next to the liquor store and now there's no overflow parking for liquor store customers. If you park there anyway, you WILL get a
So I get that it is state law to check ID's but where is the line drawn on discrimination? I watched the cashier not ask 7 people for their ID's untill I reached the counter and now granted I have a young appearance but she then argued with
I feel this location is pretty central for a lot of people, making it one of the busiest liquor stores I've been to. Depending on when you go it doesn't really matter, it's just the parking lot has tons of people and the dependable begger.
Not terribly impressed with the selection here, but maybe that's par for the course for Utah. I'm used to well stocked liquor stores in the mid-Atlantic and Florida that have as much square footage devoted to beer as this store has square
I went to the Sugarhouse store and they have the BEST beer selection available. The store is very well stocked and just packed with sales and deals. Unusual for a state liquor store. Parking is a drag though especially Saturday afternoon.
This location always has everything stocked and if they are out of something they have similar recommendations or a date of when it will be back. Very hardworking employees and they keep lines moving. Very satisfied with the service here.
Great staff! They have a couple lines to mitigate flow. It's hard to beat the perfect location, eveeeen though it can be kinda rough to pull in and out from 1100 East. I suggest, approach from the North down 11th and take a right in, and
In this Liquor store, there are two people, including the security there who discriminate against tourists, they are very rude, They target people who do not live in Utah with bad attitude and arrogance threatening and do not sell liquor
Carolyn (I think) was wonderful, setting aside a special bottle that I was anxious to get for my son until I could get off work and travel there. I came in as soon as I got off.. Another lady (sadly I couldn't see her name tag - I really
I’ve always had good service from the employees here and the selection is pretty good. I do agree though, over the last few months it seems to be overrun by homeless crowds that are allowed to literally camp right outside the doors.
I worked there for almost a year and saw 1st hand how people were treated and the employees. I would not recommend this job for anybody considering the pay and the atmosphere that you have to work in!!! The parking is very bad also.
They have a great selection. It is well organized and the stuff is very friendly. Prices are okay just like anywhere else. Parking seam to be a little crowded. But it was a Friday night and I guess it is just normal for a weekend.
Depends when you go. They require masks and a 6ft distance, even outside of the store. They do close at 7, however the people are pretty nice and the selection is ok. I marked down because of the limited alcohol selection
This large store has all sorts of options in any category of drink you prefer. The staff are very friendly and go the extra mile to package your purchases securely. Everyone is friendly and the selection is awesome.
Well stocked, safe distanc measures and masks implemented. Very nice staff. I appreciated her asking for my ID the other day. As I'm 50 years old that was quite the compliment. MADE MY DAY! …
It's the 2nd of January. I tried to call before I drove to the store and they were closed when on Google it says they were open until ten. Stop privatizing liquor if you can even stay open for the hours stated.
The store was packed with people and they handled the continuous crowd efficiently. Everyone there was above the usual level of happiness while sober. I'm sure their spirits were even happier soon thereafter.
What choice have we got? They sometimes seem to have cashiers in inverse proportion to how busy they are. The wine selection has improved, but is still pretty bad. This is a good store for beer and bourbon.
The employees were grumpy. some employees is very rude with the costumer, special when the people don't have IDs of Utah, they used bad worlds, We need other liquor store near to this area!
Place for all wine, beer, and alcohol in Salt Lake City, Utah! Open til 10:00PM! Closed Sunday! Please drink responsibly! Do not drive if drink past being coherent! Love self, love others!
The Store is Clean and well stocked, the employees are very courteous! (Apart from the Vagrants hanging out drinking on the side lawn/police need to address this public intoxication asap!)
Parking is a hassle it's a really bad location where the store is located and it gets a ton of traffic. But it's also one of the few DABS where you can buy 1.75 ltr of Everclear 190 proof.
We tried to ask a simple question about a creme liquor option and the obese, Caucasian woman with the brown, dusty hair bun was so rude and short with us. Yikes, won't be coming back here
This is one of two stores in my neighborhood. I gave it three stars because at peak hours parking is difficult and the lines are long. The good news is that it's open until 10:00.
The staff is great but Utah's DABC is a failure. They rent locations that are too cramped, the aisles are too narrow and cluttered with boxes because of the poor locations.
Blackberry wine, they had. I was told to look for this flavor and a sales person was nice enough to leave his register and accompany me to it's location. Great sales people.
Pretty good selection of beer, easy to park, plenty of cashiers. I didn't really see any cider, which was a bummer. Also, like most state stores, nothing is refrigerated.
Why oh why are they going to start closing at 7:00pm? They have a good selection. It's a good store. But I don't know what is going on with the hours of operation.
It's where we have to go to get fun drinks in Utah. Staff are polite and the store is clean. Try to avoid at the busy times because parking can be an issue.
Small parking lot which isn't always an issue. If you come near a holiday or big occasion the parking lot is cramped & the lines can be very long and slow.
Love this store. Wine selection changes often. I wish we could get a wider variety of some bourbons but whatever. I've never had a bad experience here
Always quick, great employees, and a great selection of product. Store is always clean and there's always staff to check me out when I'm ready to go!
Christmas Eve Eve was crazy busy. Parking lot was a nightmare. A bottle of champagne could realistically cost you a $1000 collision deductible.
Great place to get hooch. Its come along way in terms of getting you in and out, as opposed to how it was a couple of years ago.
Store was good but the road construction which has been going on for years makes it hard to get and especially hard to leave.
Pretty picked over and busy as 2 days before Christmas. Had all registers open, took no time to check out. Great job people!
Decent selection but to small of a place and sometimes wait 5-10 minutes to park. Utah liquor laws are discriminatory.
For a state run liquor store it will do. They store all their craft beers warm instead of in coolers. Ruins the beer.
Hard to say since there's literally 0 available parking the last two times I attempted to go there. Well done, Utah.
Only in Utah the government is so corrupt that they leave the Mormon Church cult in charge of alcohol sales
Decent size and fast freindly service. Parking could be a bit larger, however, people are in and out quick.
Great staff. Always friendly and helpful. Awesome selections. This location rocks ! Recommend it !!
The parking is pretty lame, but the store is easy to navigate and the staff is personable and fast!
Omg the watermelon moonshine is out of this world ya gotta try it with mountain dew watermelon
My favorite Liquor store for real if l don't find my drink in this area l always looser
Way too many check out lines and not enough shelf space. Very small wine section.
Anyone ever figure out the sketchy fire closest to the park? Please message me
They have the states alcohol reserve, soooo...kinda nice to have.
They have liquor and wine. And I like that about this location.
Run like a state monopoly, not a favorable experience.
Well organized , decent selection, small parking lot.
