Not only was my house fined, the guy that was assigned to come and drive to my house to take pictures and keep giving us more fines never responded to the emails he was sent, horrible person to deal with. When he finally did respond his responses never made sense, so I started calling their main offices, only to find out that the phone number posted online is not specific to your needs so you have to email them because they have different departments. Once you speak to the right person, things start to move, but by that point your fine dates have all expired so you're forced to pay so much more money. Once you get to the right person, they have you purchase more things for your house and then get you stuck in a loophole trying to get out of this mess. I've been waiting to hear back to see if the last fine could be removed because the guy that initially came to my house submitted a report saying that the structure that we were fined for was still up. I reached back to the city letting them know that the structure was no longer standing and could prove it by rolling back the cameras that he never even came by on the dates that were stated. Still no response in months. Such a horrible experience to deal with these people. Not really focusing on the issues that you're trying to resolve, its the people you have to speak to regarding these matters, it's like they all hate to work there. I remember when I first started dealing with this I thought I could just walk in and speak to someone to try to figure this out and I WAS TURNED AWAY AT THE DOOR. Because they wanted me to have an appointment. I could not believe that on my day off they wanted me to schedule on a day that worked for them to speak to me.. This place needs to be audited by our local government, they're failing at communication and procedures.

Worst department in Indianapolis Gov't. Can't ever get anyone on the phone. City still looks like garbage despite the money that they constantly steal from violations. They send people out to write tickets and make money and revenue for the city. Absolutely nothing to improve or fix the neighborhoods and business. In fact, they steal from and fine local business' more than anything. Have been trying to reach someone for WEEKS and never 1x got a call back from anyone other than the guy who writes the tickets and he told me a supervisor would reach out because he stated he had nothing to do with payments and didn't know how to reach any other departments etc. This organization is funded by the public, to steal from the public, and then provide zero accountability or customer service. Worst department in all of Indianapolis Government. Almost want to aply for the role and leave my position as COO with the current company to come show them how to be efficient and help people in the neighborhood and run business' but then I remember that no one in the organization cares about anyone but themselves and early gov't retirement. pfft.. smh

I am clearly being harassed by cider enforcement unjustly over what they deem my vehicle as "inoperable", even though NO part of my engine, transmission or driveline has never been removed outer partially disassembled!!! An interior panel piece of my car bring removed DOES NOT MAKE IT "INOPERABLE"!!!!! The code is quieten in black and white!!! There is no grey area open for interpretation!!!!!!! This is complete harassment and corruption!!! My next step is to go the mayor and the governors office and hold the D.C.E. accountable for their unjustified threats and actions!!! My vehicle is in my driveway, no flat tires, no broken windshield, and the license plates are historical plates THAT NEVER EXPIRE!!! IT HAS PERMANENT HISTORIC REGISTRATION AND PLATES!!!!!!!

We just got a tax bill for 18,182.83 on a property we owe Hell the house isn't even worth that and I called to find out what was going on and they said the fees are from Code Enforcement.. They said due to having to cut grass board up windows and unsafe and empty home BULLSHIT this property has never been empty My son and his Family live there and trying to get a hold of anyone at Code Enforcement is nearly impossible. I think Channel 13 news needs to do a story on this cause they are trying to get money for nothing. This house has always been occupied and all the windows are brand new 5 years ago and have never been boarded up nor have they ever had to cut the grass there. Plus no one has ever left us a note or citation on the door or in the mail box.

Very disappointed in the lack of communication from the company! I had filed May 22nd for a copy of my site plan to install a fence. After calling 811 and getting the run around on who to talk to in the first place. Finally got a email to fill out a form. Then said it would be 5-7 business days. It has now been a month and I have reached out multiple times and get no response. I am in urgent need of a fence to protect my dogs from all the strays and also to protect the strays from my dogs! I have messaged asking who to reach out to higher up and keep getting told Kurt in which I have yet to ever hear from him! I will be doing more research because this is unacceptable when I’m trying to take all precautions to protect everyone!

So apparently it's acceptable to allow code enforcement officials to write citations based on license plates when they have no way to verify if the plate is valid. This is a common practice and illegal according to Indiana code, hope this helps someone out. On a other note we now have lawsuits pending. Thanks for putting my kids thru College indy.Be sure to file harassment charges on their officers, as well as a no contact order once you have proof you have been harassed. They have been practicing illegal citations for years and now have a 40 million dollar class action suit in the works. Have a great day..

As a prior employee I must say this is the crossroads of the city. Lots of our neighbors and Hoosiers come to ask any and all kinds of questions here and our people know exactly where the questions must be directed if they do not work on the issue in question. Everyone here is professional and kind. There are ways in which service doesn't go as quickly as one hopes - this is municipal service. There are only so many of permit issuers and only so many of our tax dollars working for us. A review of building plans cannot be rushed but the BNS will guide your permits to compliance!

The only thing this office is fast for, since the pandemic has been making sure to collect money from fines, that I,ve been getting for not getting completion forms or permit extensions. But everytime I've tried to get in contact , the person responding mixes up conversations and gets me all confused too. You guys expect us to have everything right on track while you obviously have not done that from your side. The bad part is that I get fined for any issues. Also the website is so confusing and hard to work with.

I really appreciate Melissa Webb helping me out to get my job permits it seemed like it was going to go on forever and then when she took over the review process. She diligently took steps to make sure our review were performed in less than a week. We had our permits issued in 5 days after waiting 3 months in reviews. Thanks so much for all that you're doing and I think you were going to do great things!! I recommend if your having issues get in touch with her!

They claimed a vehicle was on my property and there was not and they sent another letter giving me a fine of 250.dollars for a commercial vehicle on my property there was never any vehicle on the property and if you appeal. Your fine is up to 2500.so even if you appeal they fine you and even when they are wrong they won't say we made a mistake.I should not have to go to court for something that is not true.I have no trust for these people.

  • Daniel D

They don't pick up their phones, when you leave voicemails you get calls back about 20% of the time-and if you're lucky enough to talk to a person, they won't know the answer and they'll refer you to a supervisor who won't return your calls. I always dread when a client asks for help with this department, it never goes well.

Not going to say anything that people don't already know, that this government agency is trash. If you are a business and have money to blow i'm sure you'll have luck, but if you are an individual simply trying to get work done they will take advantage. Make sure you have a GREAT contractor and good luck

  • t turner

As a contractor I was just told it would take (20) days before our permit request receives a review. Prior to Covid we could walk the permits through in (1) day. This is not the way to grow our City. Twenty days for a permit to be assigned for review is unacceptable.

  • Tutu Larue

Clear violations of residences and businesses are overlooked and most are not even investigated. Others get cited for no reason.. They just put closed, no violation on reports.. Pretty worthless. This agency and the Mayors Inaction Center are worthless as they come.

  • Joe Fall

I have mixed feelings about this place. They do help the community in making safer building practices but when you govern yourself and get to keep all the money you generate from fining people, I feel that could be a big conflict of interest.

  • onekool Guy

Tried to call them and to ask a question and they hang up on you the first chance they get on the automated phone line. If you leave a voice mail good luck getting a call back. If you go there the parking is horrible....etc etc

  • Dennis Smith

I have tried many times and find it difficult or impossible to get the status of my permit. Is it done or not? I know this is a tough question but it is pretty basic. Why can't I just enter my permit # and find out the status?

  • Crystal Kent

I work in commercial construction and the staff here are extremely helpful in navigating the complexities of permitting. They care a lot about safety and helping development proceed in Indianapolis.

  • Holly Wood

I just got hung up On! Upon, being pass to Supv Code Enforcement is at the State Level (They are to handle the building structures they referred me back to the health dept. Ch 6 referred me

  • Indianapolis Chiropractor

Adam and Steven were very helpful on helping me navigate the permit process. The department is very busy but they did add a human element to what can appear to be a big government machine.

  • Tracey Lall

Gouging money from home owners during Covid. $400 fine with no warning provided (no registered mail, no email, no property notice). Judge at hearing refuses to listen to reason.

  • Darya Jackson

People here are helpful, friendly and professional. However the wait times of 3-5 hours are absolutely unreasonable. They should come up with electronic appointment system.

  • Denisse Molina

Very helpful, employees were very patient with first timers like me. I had no idea what to do and they guided me through it. Thanks.

  • Rolonda Brown

Found the process easy thanks to the wonderful help from employees! Would recommend a phone number to just ask questions though.

  • York's Folly

no one answers emails and calls will almost ever get to a person, just an endless loop of robot that doesnt actually help

  • Stephanie Phillips

Very Frustrating. It seems there is not oversight. People who work here do not ever answer the phones.

  • Michael Mergell

Good people Fair process. The online permitting is getting better.
