"I came here for the inthecityjhb festival"
The home of rugby in South Africa. The last remaining fortress for the Springboks and the site of many famous victories including the 1995 World Cup. Don't let anyone put you off about the safety of the area it's in. Sure, you need to be vigilant and careful in this part of the city, but you can still have a great time here. They've upgraded the stadium significantly since 2010: there are great bar areas and food stalls, plus the Weber braai area is good for getting a steak. You can really have a fun day here. Plus the rugby: there is no better atmosphere in a stadium than when Ellis Park is full, and no better rugby on display than when the Lions are on fire!
World class sports facility for rugby union and association football in Johannesburg, constructed in 1928 and named after JD Ellis who initially made land for the stadium available. Capacity 62 567 most famous in South African hearts for hosting the 1995 Rugby World Cup where South Africa beat New Zealand 15-12. Watched the Lions dispatch the Waratahs to reach their third Super Rugby final on the spin. Outstanding security and atmosphere and this is the home of the Emirates Lions and the Xerox Golden Lions a must see icon for the visiting sports enthusiast. Had an absolute blast!!!
Amazing place to go watch a rugby game be it, the lions in a super rugby game or watching the springboks in an international test match. Not many other stadiums can match the vibe inside the stadium. The only real downside is the location of the stadium, late games finishing in the dark are not nice to walk back to your car or find an uber if the match was very busy. Parking is a nightmare as there basically is no real parking that's easily accessible. Park and ride is a lot easier, generally they have a lot of options for the busy games.
Went for the Bokke vd Argentina game. Of course it was amazing because we won, and the atmosphere was great. Sadly, not 1 of the ladies' toilets could lock or flush! By the end of the game it was absolutely revolting to go to the loo! Everyone in the bathrooms where disgusted!! I guess the contractor who put the locks on the cubicles as well as the flush buttons was not qualified to do the job. What an embarrassing thing for our country that overseas supporters have to see this!!
I came here for the inthecityjhb festival. Had a great time. Was not too congested, became very polluted but that is from all the horrible people who were there throwing their litter around. Brilliant concerts were put on and there were amazing drink prices, but not that many good options for food. Very very happy with concert. The people in the crowd were terrible and very high/drunk and behaving obnoxiously but that is not the venue's fault.
This historic stadium is not just a chance to relive one of South Africa's most jubilant moments. It is also a great place to spend time with family and friends. The space is well planned, with a range of options for food and beverages and - most importantly - clean and easily accessible facilities. The staff are hands-on and courteous with good crowd management skills, which makes it a great getaway for people of all ages!
Excellent venue for Springboks. The Lions union is really turning things around in the area. It looks a lot better than previous years especially with security around the stadium and with parking. Still not a great area but for Test rugby you do not feel threatened as I have experienced in the past. Supporters areas are good value and the stadium looks to be well maintained. A great place to watch the game..
One of the most prestine rugby stadiums in South Africa. However, situated in one of the most crime ridden areas in the country. I would recommend taking the Gautrain to Rosebank Station and then ubering to the stadium or being dropped off and picked up right outside. Not a good idea to loiter around or park one's car outside, unsurveiled.
We always enjoy photographing rugby at Ellis Park, although the lighting can be tough for ealy kick-offs the stadium lights are great for us. The hospitality provided by the Lions Rugby staff is second to none and we have always had a positive experience when attending matches at the stadium. Keep up the great work Lions Rugby
Great rugby experience! Blessed to have been able to use the Gautrain services there and back home to Centurion...train, bus - well organized- very impressed with Ellis Park and the transportation available. Oja best moment for me outside of the game..#Flysafair the fly over was AWESOME - thank you Captain
Always a blast at Ellis Park! Ellis Park is a beautiful stadium with a wonderful view of the JHB skyline. We have watched numerous rugby matches there and we have never been disappointed. The facilities are good (there are more than enough toilets) and the spirit is always abundant. We will definitely be back.
Great stadium and you feel the history in the grounds... maybe more banners and memories around would give that feel even more but a true icon in the heart of Johannesburg. Being able to have your drink whilst you watch the game is a great bonus over other stadiums on the highveld
We sat quite high up and still had an amazing view of the game. Facilities were great and clean despite the stadium being jampacked full. We ubered so parking wasn't an issue! Sun was in our eyes the first half, but with sunglasses and a cap it shouldn't be a problem.
Home of my team the Lions and always fun to go watch them live. Better to head over to the stadium early to get better parking. I parked at the Shell garage right next to one of the main entrances to the stadium and it was safe. Cost me R80 for the parking though.
Good experience but the public is ripped off with refreshments. R25 for a small bottle of water which will cost R11 at the shop. Sad but true! Stadium pretty empty normally and tickets where not available online. People had to queue in the heat to buy tickets
What an awesome experience. Watched the Lions Vs Waratahs and 44 - 26 Final score. First match at Ellis Park for me and the vibe was great. Match was intense from beginning to end and the crowd, beer and buzz was totally the best!! Roar Lions!!! …
What a wonderful outing for a family. Beautiful lawns with umbrellas to sit under while the children play on a jumping castle and play close by. Really picnic like. We enjoyed the rugby. More so as the Lions gave Zebre a hiding. A good time was had by all.
Rugby is always fun. This stadium does well to manage bathroom capacity and quick queues for food and drink. Even @ 40 000 people, i didn't wait in any line for more than 10min (only the food took a while, but it is made fresh, so it is understandable
Great stadium but so, so dangerous after the match, was scared for my life trying to find my park and ride bus. Such a pity as it's a fantastic stadium with so much history. Would take a lot to get me to risk my life going there again.
Always a vibe. Still a great outing. Fidelity security should stop their staff from ripping patrons off for parking. Entrance and exiting was seamless. Only peeve was the stalls on the outer perimeter did not have power to serve food.
Still a very beautiful stadium. But would have been a better experience if all the bars were open. Also need to pre pour the beers so people don't spend half the game waiting to get a beer and then have pour the beers themselves
Stadium experience was amazing. My 4th visit there, the biggest concern is the safety and the fact that they rip you off for parking, Please offer enough and safe parking to the spectators that pay for their tickets.
Well kept and maintenance facilties. Ablution families fairly clean. Security presence is high. And service providers on site are professional and supply quality food and drink. Emirates merchandise store available.
One of the best stadiums I've been to. Unfortunately my friend's wallet was stolen, but we were able to block it at a near FNB ATM they have on facility. Would rate the stadium and the experience a 10/5 …
Great facilities inside the stadium with easy access to toilets, food and bars. Parking sometimes an issue but security is good. Watch out for opportunists that will guard your car, you’ll pay dearly.
Great place, excellent atmosphere. Accessibility is above average. Only complaints are the prices of water and for bigger persons and compared to other stadiums the chairs are a bit small
The lack of Signage to the various access entries into the main Parking in the stadium is frustrating. Having to always ask the staff/marshals on the day and get the run around.
The event was absolutely well organised.... everything properly calculated from security to the parking lot...God's grace was indeed at work. The Lord is good all the time
Great stadium and amazing atmosphere during the rugby game! Be cautious when walking out of the stadium as it is the perfect opportunity for pickpocketers.
Needs new food options. There were a lot of drug addicts/beggars asking for money outside the stadium, it made us feel unsafe on the way to the parking.
Watched the Lions play and had a behind the scenes tour with SuperSport - really awesome to be able to go onto the field and see the player's rooms!
Always get goosebumps when I go to Ellis Park. I would suggest you Uber though or book secure parking at the athletics stadium across the road.
Enjoyed the match between South Africa (Springboks) and Nieu Zealand (All Blacks). Enjoyable family outing if a sport event takes place there.
Rugby, Running Athletes and soccer teams some from DSTV premier League practice every week. Pedestrians get chances to see popular players.
Great to experience a test match between The Springboks and the All Blacks. Outside entertainment was amazing. Second to none atmosphere...
Visited the Sports shop there for Rugby merchandise and they have just everything you can think of at very value-for-money prices
One of the greatest stadiums ever!!! The atmosphere is amazing. The crowd is loud. Food and beer stalls everywhere. :-)
Im definitely going there again my first visit at the stadium.enjoyed watching my team kaizer chiefs & super sport
A lot of loose bricks U can hirt urself but all & all great stadium because The AB walkes away with a win
It was an amazing experience , the Standard Bank staff were all so kind and helpful. Thank you Leane .
We had a good experience at the stadium with the vibe and of course great rugby! Good old family fun.
It's beautiful and best to visit during events as there will be extra security and police presence
This is a great place watch different sports for example Rugby, the The Emirates Lions play here!
Great experience. Pity about all the pick pockets around. Please consider more ladies facilities!
Fantastic venue awesome atmosphere, we lost to the bulls tho, better game next time boys
Incredible atmosphere! Just be careful at night when leaving and walking in the streets
The stadium is quite run down. We only used the parking for the ABSA run your city.
Always love being at the Home of the Gauteng Lions Rugby Union eJozi
