Large portion of the campground stayed flooded most of our stay resulting limited walking access to laundry and dog parks. Staff is not very engaged or present. Closed Sunday -other days they don’t open until 10!? You are subject to inspection and can get “demerits” for violations such as if your site is not mowed. (Yes, you get to mow your own grass) ) But there is one mower and the trimmers have no line. Fortunately the guys that mow the common areas will try to get as close as they can. Over all the only plus I can give it is price and location as far as beach access. But along with that access (to a beach where you are told not to swim due to bacteria) you will get eaten alive by bad noseeums mosquitoes and flies, probably being made worse by the standing water everywhere. Maybe you will get lucky and it won’t rain in Florida while you are here. I’d check into the annex if I stayed again but not sure it has laundry or bath house in the area. Overall if price is your most important consideration like it appears to be to these retirees then perhaps you will be satisfied. However if overall quality of your experience is most important - if you have any other options - I’d choose them.
I called to make reservations. Like Patrick AFB you can't. They are both show up, first come first serve. This policy, deployed by base commanders through MWR effectively eliminates any Veteran outside the local geographic regions from using the MWR Camping Facilities as Congress Expanded on Jan 1 2020 to all disabled and retired veterans. You can not show up to the base "hoping" for a spot then go to a local campground because local campgrounds are booked up 6-12 months in advance!!! Most the civilian RV parks don't allow refund cancelations. So, if your not a local Active duty or Local Veteran you are virtually banned by the Park. This law was expanded because the current force (abt 1.5M) doesn't use enough MWR facilities enough so congress was going to close them, including BX/PX/Commissary/Pools/Camping/MWR. Opening them to more Vets was the military solution for more use and save them from the Congressional AX. This is the last time I will try to use anything on bases, Let Congress close the whole MWR System and Facilities. Congratulations Base Commanders: you saved your facilities for your local active duty members and local Veterans - For the short term! Signed 9 YR DAV.
Hello all! The camp ground itself is fine and the amenities are decent. My problem is that they have no consideration for active duty members who are stationed on this base. You have to leave after 6 months and be gone for a month to return and then during the winter if you didn’t reserve a year in advance your out of luck. They care more about the snow birds and retirees being here then the actual military members that are stationed on macdill afb. And that in itself is disgusting. Some will say just move off base well sadly the base is the best pricing for a campground and it’s more easier to get to work and do our duties as members of the armed forces. DO BETTER MACDILL FAMCAMP!!!! my family is here for the next 3 years and Ik I’m not the only one. You have over 359 spots and I will not rest till I see a living space for all active duty members stationed on this base where we aren’t kicked out for time or for snow birds. Absolutely disgusting and the people who run the ground that are less then helpful and snarky knowing that they could care less is so gross. 6th force support squadron it’s time to make a change.
MacDill is a beautiful AFB. Private beach, access to fishing right from the docks or beach. The camp is located at the furthest point in the park! But noting takes that long to get to. It’s a nice drive. This is it’s own city. Post office on base and mail delivered to the FamCamp post office. The camping area is close. Not much room between sites. Everyone seems very courteous about noise. No issues. Had to stay at a partial hook up site when we first got here. We over to a FHU spot after 2 days. Free cable, free use of mailbox, but there is a $20 deposit for the key, refunded when you turn it in. Unless you have reservations, you pay for 2 weeks at a time. There is an Annex campground, spacing is better there but it’s much further away from the beach and mailboxes. No campfires. Lots of birds. Catch blue crabs right off the beach. Beach is good size. Dog beach also. 5 stars would have been given if the spaces were so close together. Make sure you use the Main Gate at the round a bout. RVs of any size other than a van will be turned away.
The phrase Veteran is tossed about a bit much. Most Veterans cannot use. Most Veterans didnot ' do the retirement'., cannot use. Most Veterans simply using the VA, cannot use. Even incorporated in the system for health, accounted, cannot use. So with accurate speech, this is for ACTIVE AND RETIRED VETERANS. Exceptions? ie: The hotdog vendor at the food court belonging to mwr/6thservice club. Never served in USA military. But currently on record with federal installation, often with no past to check..other then several years.LOOPHOLE. No, Its not available, to simply say 'Veterans'...and Im sure you can understand the ire of that term being thrown around. Active Retired and accounted family members. Civilian service Active and Retired and accounted family members. No. Veteran, alone ..defies accuracy. And creates a bit sarcasm.
Hey Campers! Making my way through Florida, thought I would stop in Fam Camp Mcdill..... Yikes! Looks like MWR is on track in destroying a once beautiful campground. So sad to see this campground in total disarray. Arrived on Monday, office closed holiday schedule...... I don't get it! Why doesn't the Air Force oversee what MWR has done to this campground, infact I have been traveling the USA. I have discovered most of all of the AF Fam Camps are being run into the ground, thanks to MWR. Maybe someone from the Air Force look at the Navy Fam Camps or maybe the Army Corps of Engineers COE..... Top Shelf Campgrounds and less expensive..... On a positive note the host was awesome..... Next stop Destin Army Fam Camp..... A beautiful Top Shelf Campground. A little pricey... Safe travels to all✌️☘️ Andrew
Let me start by saying that the Campground was clean and quiet. The beach had sign warning the water might have high levels of bacteria. Bio environmental said swim at your own risk. There are a lot of rules. Can not put a rug down because it will kill the grass ( not very much grass here). We were told that we had to pick our rug up by the camp host but they never said anything to the campers. Rug and screen tents and pop up tents all over the camp grounds. Was told that only one vehicle and it must be parked in front of the RV. The rules do say 2 + the RV, it appears that people park wherever they want. I did enjoy my visit here I’m just not sure if we will be back here!
Nice park, but signing in was a marathon event. Registration requirements are more than any military base we have stayed. It's OK, just be prepared with all your documents. Not sure how they do site assignments, but when we were there, May 2022, there were plenty of open sites and we were placed in a crowded area. We went back to registration and ask to move to a different site and were told it was taken. We were there a week and no one was ever on the site. I guess someone had paid for site and had already gone??? RV park is right on bay, so you must drive thru entire base to reach park. Overall it was a nice park and we would stay again.
MacDill AFB is a wonderful RV park, people are awesome and the base has all the Aminities . The facilities are spick and span, showers hot and the park clean the sites are perfect. Staff very competent and friendly. Very close to the beach, which was clean white sand and for all of that for a more then reasonable price. Much Thanks for your hospitality and the C-141 star craft. Oh one last thing. The front gate has very intelligent sharp gards that know their base. Much thanks MacDill AFB. Sims Family pet friendly
Office is not efficiently run. The waiting g area should be larger to accommodate guests instead of the other way around. The document gathering is tedious compared to other famcamps. Too much of a hassle to acquire a reservation. The office staff were not friendly and almost seemed annoyed that they had to work. Maybe understaffed? Why are they only opening up at 10am when most guests are early risers. It took 3 days for us to see a counter person to pay fees.
Wish I could actually give them a rating....any kind of rating, but if there was a star lower than a 1 it would be for their office management. They have a voice recording citing their office hours and I have tried contacting them at every time referenced for over a week to no avail! Nor does it allow you to leave a message. Also gives an email address that apparently is also ignored. Why even bother with the appearance of an office? Pitiful! MINUS 1 STAR!!
The absolute epitome of the privilege to be able to camp, swim, fish, golf, shop and lay on what amounts to a private beach is possibly the biggest benefit to any qualifying veteran and their families. MacDill is akin to a private club. Go behind the gates and you feel protected, welcomed and thankful. If you're a service member and you have access and leave MacDill less than 5 stars then you need a reality check
I kind of want to keep this place a secret however there's more than 300 camping spaces so you would have more people know about it there's still plenty to go around. There is a Beach area right in the campground there is a restaurant and bar right in the campground and the marina is right in the campground! This is an amazing place to go with the family or just for the weekend. We spent spring break here and loved exploring the Tampa area!
I was here in January and February this year and loved it so much I came back! The spot we were in last year was not vacant this time, but the one directly across from it was. The people here are very friendly, and although it is very different here than it was when we were here at the beginning of the year, it is still a great place to stay. It is much hotter and there are alot less people, it is still beautiful and a very nice famcamp.
We love spending our winters at MacDill FamCamp. It takes a little time & effort to learn the seasonal reservations process, but we found it’s worth it compared to other campgrounds in Florida. Where else can you go for the price & amenities. We feel privileged to have this available to veterans and the people we have meet are outstanding. Military families take care of each other and we have really enjoyed our experiences here.
Even when the snow birds are here, this is a very quiet, clean, peaceful RV park. Connected to the base marina and a stones throw away from the base golf course, it's a perfect place to come and enjoy RV and camping living. The laundry room has plenty of machines to take care of your clothes and I never had to wait. The club offers hot food and cold drinks if you decide not to cook. I always enjoy coming here.
Very inexpensive RV weekend with the grandbabies (8, 6, & 4 year olds). Within walking distance you have the beach and jungle gym (not right location, shaded, or enough for kids). Lots of flying and walking bugs, but they have done a much better job getting rid of sand spurs. MacDill is only 20 miles from our Tampa home and the grandbabies think we are in another state or country. . . making great memories!
Staff is friendly and very professional. Stopped in to get some ant treatment. One recommendation: invest in some acoustic tiles to reduce the loud echoes. It's very difficult to hear the staff. I know it must be difficult for them as well. Bioenvironmental health at the hospital could do an audit and may be able to help justify the additional funds.
We are full-time nomads and frequent military RV parks. This one is pretty nice. The food on base looks good, however it's a butterface situation. From the DFAC to the stuff at the PX, go offbase to eat. But the base itself is legit. Marked 1 star off because the beach is closed and the food sucks. But still a recommended stop.
This is just a wonderful spot. First off, the Base is located in a great spot. This place has its own Beach. And it's never very crowded. They also have a great selection of RV and Tow trailers, Plus boats to select from. I would highly recommend for any active-duty soldiers Sailors or are men to check this place out.
Large outdoor rec operation with RV sites that have full hook up, dry camping and tent camping. Marina is nice. Beach is nice. Bathhouse large with ample washer/dryers that use quarters. Dog friendly but no xpens allowed. Beautiful wildlife and walking. Within 3 miles of entire base. Stunning harbor views.
RV park located on MacDill AFB that has a non-swimmable bc of high bacteria. Accessible only to active military and veterans. List 300+ RV slots which are very close together. RVers have access to many of the base amenities. Covid-19 Alert: Masks were not worn. Close proximity parking may increase risk.
Very nice experience, even though we're going home with so many bug bites... it's not even funny. Wow, the place it's super nice, the registration was good and the host was great. But we will give it one more try in nicer months...the mosquitoes situation was out of control. So be aware in July!
Rented a few items from the outdoor Rec/Marina Debbie was so friendly and made the checkout & return process easy. Rented a bike, 2 beach chairs & a beach umbrella. Beach area is within walking distance from Outdoor Rec/Marina. The beach was very clean and a nice place to enjoy lunch.
Stayed for 2 weeks before. The staff could be more knowledgeable and friendly. When you go in to check in or reserve some people either want to do their job or don't. The most part after that it's a great place. Wish we could be allowed to have camp fires but I get why we can't.
Very nice and clean setup. Great customer service from Jen, she provided us with a lot of information and answers to our questions. A lot to offer here at Macdill AFB between the FAMCAMP, Outdoor Rec and ITT. The walking trails, gym, indoor pickleball court are outstanding.
Our camp host, Charlene, went above and beyond the call of duty to assist us. She made us feel cared for! We showed up without reservations and didn't have such a good spot however we were extremely grateful for a place to rest after traveling from Southern California!
As with all Fam Camps, this place was a good place to stay. Lots to do in Tampa. Unfortunately, it's ALL THE WAY at the end of the Base, and you have to drive FOREVER at 25mph to get ON/OFF the base. Nice sites. Good water pressure reliable power.
Nice location off of MacDill Beach, Marina, and Seascape Beach House.
Restrooms
Restrooms are big and clean and well lite.
Dog-friendliness
There are at least two dog parks.
Picnic area
Each site has its own picnic tables.
A very nice campground if your military, family, etc... A bunch of fun things to do. Food is low priced at the exchange. Revelry plays daily at 5 and 5. Taps played last night at 10, we thought it was due to a false soldier coming home. I
We love Macdill! We have so many family and friends here as we were stationed at macdill. FAMCAMP is great the noseeums are terrible no matter what time of year. We dont spend much time outside because of it. Which stinks. The spots near
We just stopped in for extending our stay a couple weeks. Jen was the one that helped us and she is awesome. She took time to explain everything about spending winter here and was very pleasant. We love MacDill Famcamp and the Tampa area.
Me and my wife are retired and travel every winter to Florida and always stay on military bases. This was our first time at famcamp and it was great !! The office staff was friendly and helpful. They were always very accommodating. The
Small camp sites, over crowded, stupid socialist rules (like all military bases)and the worse part is their WiFi doesn’t work. Lack of WiFi would normally not be an issue except all 5G and 4G LTE cell towers for personal internet are
Nice park. Earlier reviews indicate the place is full during snowbird season. it was very open during our stay. We asked to be by the water and they put us in an area with permanent residents. Some had clutter outside, but most were
Nice campground and awesome people! Remember that illogical military policies apply, so try to be patient and kind. Oh...watch out for fire ants everywhere and mosquitoes can get pretty bad at times.
Beautiful facility with great showers, laundry room and pretty much all the amenities you could ask for it. The only downside is that you're not allowed to have any open fires including campfires.
Being retired military, MacDill FamCamp is another one of our favorite places to go to. It's right on the beach and has all the base resources available to us as a retired military family.
Nice park, friendly staff and overall a pleasant atmosphere. The winter season fills up quickly, over a year in advance. I suspect it's the same snowbirds every year but that's cool.
MacDill Air Force Base, fam camp is an outstanding value, family, friendly, quiet, and picturesque Paradise. The regulars are friendly and the staff very helpful.
To use the family camp at McGill Air Force Base you have to be active duty military, retired military or a VA hospital system rated veteran.
Well kept, public utilities are nice, and it’s by a pretty little beach. It’s a fair camping price and everyone is usually very friendly!
Campground is huge! MWR has a nice facility, boats, kayaks, rentals. Grounds could be better but the Mission comes first. I understand.
Do not camp here unless you have a death wish. The bugs the heat the atmosphere. Bacteria in the water. Just say no kids.
Reasonable rates. Great location. Callous management (their paycheck is only ~1% dependent on you). Floods often.
I asked for speed control in the Famcamp area. Everyone, including Police are speeding throughout the campground
We love being so close to the beach. Very nice sunsets and grocery and just about everything right on base
This was an awesome camping spot. Went to a quilt shop, the ocean was at our feet. Will definitely return!
Beautiful place!!! Spacious, clean & friendly faces!! Loved every minute!!! Can't wait to go back!!!
