My husband found this free tour guide when we stayed in Lyon. We went on a rainy and cold day, but the guide Paul did a great job with preparing an interesting tour for the group that lasted about 2 hours. I was cold and wet but he did a good job of telling us a good mixed of stories as we walked from one point of interest to another. He also added some light humor here and there which was perfect for the tour. He definitely shared a lot of interesting history of the town and gave good recommendations on where to eat and other places to go while in Lyon. I wish there are more free tour s like this in other cities!!! Since he doesn't charge for the tour, please leave him a generous tip since that's how he earns his living. Just think how much you would normally pay to hire a tour guide (prob 50 euros or more).

Very informative and interesting tour. He took us all around and even in hidden ally’s between the big doorways. Didn’t realize how many influential people have come from the beautiful city of Lyon. Unfortunately, we missed the first part of the walk because his google calendar invite sends you to a different address, which he does tell you in an email, but we didn’t read through it enough, since we just quickly booked the day before. Funny enough we weren’t the only ones though and we ended up making friends and while trying to find the group. He also sends a very informative and detailed guide to reference after reading tour! Well worth the money and time be sure to join.

I ended up doing two different 2+ hour tours with Paul, since I enjoyed the Vieux Lyon overview so much... Croix Rousse was just as good, that is, the 2 hours seem so short, we always walk a little bit, then stop in interesting spots, get a bit of history of the city, or hint at the geography of the region, or anecdotes, or advice on what to do or where to eat etc... Without being pedantic or boring (it's probably not for people who already know a lot about Lyon and French culture/history). In 2 hours we see a fair bit and want to explore more! Paul is a very nice guy who is so enthusiastic about his experience of the local culture. Really recommended!!

Paul hosted a wonderful walking tour of Vieux Lyon, pairing historical accounting with humorous asides. I appreciated the balance in his commentary - which provided just enough information for us to leave feeling more informed but not so much that we risked being overwhelmed. Paul also thoughtfully encouraged us to revisit parts of the old town later in the day, very aware that his tour is not the be all and end all of discovering Vieux Lyon. Finally, his thoughtful engagement of different members of our group was noted and appreciated. Well worth joining Paul for a tour!

  • Natascha H

Paul is such a good guy! He is really kind and knows a lot about the french lifestyle and culture. The informations he shared with us about the history of lyon had been great. I've enjoyed specially the hidden pathes. We even went to a restaurant he recommended before in an email. So that's great. If you admit to a walking tour you'll get great information upfront per email! Plus we were late to the walking tour and he made sure we could follow along his path. Thank you so much for your admire to educate people about lyon! Merci ou Au Revoir Paul ☀️

  • Francesco De Sandi

Paul is one in a kind. Passionate about is job, very knowledgeable about lyon and entusiast about sharing is passion and culture with people from all around the world. The two tours I've taken were equally great and, although I had already spent some time in lyon, both made me discover new things and hidden corners I could have never found on my own. Finally, his website is literally a free tresor of information and recommendations.Definitively a must for whoever wants to visit lyon

  • Janis S

Paul is a fantastic guide, and we took both his Vieux Lyon and City Tour Lyon. Both tours covered different areas with different information. We learned so much about the city quickly, about bouchons, traboules, the silk trade history, the Roman ruins, churches, etc. Paul is very knowledgeable and passionate about Lyon and giving of information. He speaks multiple languages and is very personable. We would have taken a third tour with him if available. Highly recommended!!

  • Alex Kallimanis

I highly recommend this tour. The tour guide is knowledgeable and takes visitors to a lot of interesting spots you may not find on your own, including the traboules (public passage ways through buildings). Really appreciated his excellent recommendations. This tour works on tips - and for 2 hours of learning about Lyon it’s well worth 10 euro a person. That’s what we tipped and we saw others tipping the same. You’re free to tip less or more - whatever you want!

  • Lavina Jethani

I really enjoyed the your of Vieux Lyon (Old Lyon). It was really interesting and informative, and I learned a lot. Paul was funny and entertaining, and he gave us excellent tips for other things to do in Lyon, places to eat, etc. We even asked if there was a bouchon (traditional restaurant) with a vegetarian option, which is probably a hard ask, and the place Paul recommended was excellent. I recommend doing Paul’s tours at the beginning of your stay in Lyon!

  • Alan Heldson

The tour was very good! Paul is very outgoing and gave us a lot of interesting information about the city and also very good tips about restaurants and places to visit. He also showed us the "secret" passages around the city. Definetely recommend it if you want to learn a bit about the city and have more information to enjoy even more your stay in the beautiful Lyon. Thank you again Paul, I will for sure book the other tours once I come back to Lyon :)

  • R M

Whenever we visit a new city, we try to do a free tours walk so that we can get a nice guided tour. Paul's tour was one of the best that we've ever been on. He gave good tips and information (e.g., about the passage ways, shops, graffiti, the public transportation) that made us appreciate Lyon more when we later explored it by ourselves. He spoke clearly and didn't hurry us along. It's well-paced and you see a lot in the time. I highly recommend it.

  • Selin Kizil

This was my first free walking tour experience and definitely a unique experience that I will remember always. We wouldn’t learn this much info about Lyon & see this much little details around Vieux Lyon that only locals would know (and in such a short time!) if we wouldn’t came across to Paul. Note to mention we had great recommendations for catching quality bouchons which can be very challenging in short time as a traveler:) Much appreciated Paul

  • Justine Sha

Paul's Free Tour Lyon tours are the best. He is the most knowledgeable tour guide and will tell you everything and more about an amazing and fascinating city. I did both his walking tours and they were 100X better than any other walking tour I did here, especially the overprices paid ones! The whole rest of the trip I was spouting Paul's facts and tidbits about the city. Such a great way to get acquainted with the city. Highly recommend!!!

  • Tatiana Obando

If I had to sum it up in a nutshell, Paul's tour is the gold standard. From Lyon historical anecdotes to the local secrets, he wove a tapestry of captivating stories that brought every landmark to life. Paul's passion for the city was contagious, and his effortlessly blended humor with information. It wasn't just a tour; it was a journey through time and culture, leaving me both enlightened and thoroughly entertained. Merci beaucoup, Paul.

  • Martin Olinger

Paul provides a wonderful assortment of information, history and amusing facts about Lyon. We walked Vieux Lyon with Paul getting such insight into the area and region such that after the tour we had to go back and explore as he recommended. It was our first visit to this city and his tour helped us to quickly fall in love with Lyon. Don’t pass up this excellent tour. It is among the most interesting two hours you will spend in Lyon.

  • Laura Magyar

Paul was an excellent guide. He was perfectly prepared and his utterance was well articulated. We've got to know information and stories about Lyon which we would have no time to search for or we couldn't even find. The length (~2 hours) is just perfect for this kind of activity. Even though the weather was freezing cold, it was very well worth participating in the tour. I can only recommend it to everybody who goes to Lyon.

  • Deborah Eagle

Made the most of 2 days in Lyon by taking Paul's Saturday and Sunday tours, covering different parts of the city. Excellent decision - the tours enriched my experience and understanding of the history and culture of the place in a short space of time. Absorbing! Very impressed, also, with the information and tips Paul provides on and after booking, as well as during the tours. Brought Lyon to life for me. Thank you.

  • sarah

Paul is a gifted storyteller. As you walk around Lyon, Paul tells stories about the culture, history, people and food of Lyon. I actually went on both tours- and each is unique. On both tours, Paul takes you through several traboules (underground passage ways). I give Paul’s walking tours 3 Michelin stars (the highest award), i.e., it’s worth a special trip to Lyon to take a walking tour with Paul. Thank you Paul!

  • Caitlin Bishop

We went on the free city tour with Paul and had a great time. Paul was very knowledgeable about the city, but able to share the history in a way that kept everything interesting. He pointed us in the right direction for the rest of our stay, would definitely recommend taking a tour with him. Please note that this wasn’t the tour meeting location though! So double check your confirmation email.

  • Rachel Lewis

Great experience, really made me fall in love with Lyon, Paul gave great practical information which then informed the rest of our stay - the boats on the Rhone for afternoon drinks was a winner! Paul was a very natural story teller with the insight of a local with the appreciation/observations of an outsider. If we had had time we would have done both tours but we were on a tight itinerary.

  • Eugenia Chee

We did the Sunday tour recently and enjoyed it very much. Paul was full of interesting information and stories and we learned a lot. He also provided restaurant recommendations. Most impressed with how he managed a group of at least 30, it did not feel too big at all, he kept things moving at a very good pace. It was a beautiful walk and a very good use of our time! Thank you Paul!

  • Paula H

Paul is so very generous with his knowledge and his time. The tour was wonderful, taking through the history of Lyon and it’s people, from Roman times, to the heights of the silk industry and the industrial revolution, to WWII through to the present day. Paul’s English is flawless and he has a good sense of humour to keep the topics lively and interesting. Highly recommended.

  • Vladimir Filciu

I went on two different walking tours in September: Free Tour of Vieux Lyon and Free City Tour Lyon. The guide is very entertaining, speaks a very good english (he is Dutch) and knows the city very well. He shared a lot of quality content about the city and even gave plenty of hints about what to visit, where to eat, where to get coffee etc. Totally recommend it.

  • Cindy W

Paul was amazing. We learned so much about the City during our 2 hrs with him. We appreciate that he moved to Lyon after having lived in other countries. He showed us many secret passages and pointed out signs and interesting facts that we wouldn’t have otherwise noticed. He provided enough historical context to keep the conversation engaging. Highly recommended!

  • Sappho

Paul was a fantastic tour guide today! We have done 10+ free tours in Europe so far and he was by far our best guide. Really informative and even brought his own pictures to show important parts of history. He showed us many places we absolutely wouldn’t have found ourselves and really personalised the tour for our group. Thanks so much Paul, I wish you the best!

  • MC

Great tour: it covers a lot of history of Lyon, as well as recommendations on what to do and eat. The part we liked the most is that unlike most free tours, Paul didn’t waste any time on any fillers taking group pictures or reminding us how much we need to tip, which we appreciated because we really got 3 full hours worth of this excellent tour. Highly recommend!

  • Karla V

Paul is a great tour guide, has great enthusiasm, knowledge and stories and the fun stops make the 2 hours go by very quickly. We covered more in 2 hours than I'd discovered in one week, yet despite the heat it wasn't tiring at all. I highly recommend you try his tours when you're in Lyon. The tours are free and you give him a tip of your choice at the end.

  • Monika W

great tour - punctual and organized. We did the old town tour and Paul pointed out so many things we would have missed out on. He even recommended some bakeries and restaurants. He recommended the Brioche Praline which we had seen the day prior, but on his recommendation we tried it and I am so happy we did. It was one of the best sweets I have ever had!

  • Oleksandra Sopova

I’ve been to many walking tours in various cities around the world, and this is definitely one of the BEST, highest quality tours! The guide tells a really fascinating story of the city, no “boring facts”, but super interesting facts about the city and history! (Did you know that the word “arena” actually meant “sand” in Latin?!) Highly recommended.

  • Julius Lajtha

This is an excellent one-man business led by charming Dutchman Paul who showed me around my beloved Erasmus exchange destination in Lyon. He is excellent at answering also quite difficult questions and really knows a lot about Lyon. I very much appreciated the restaurant recommendations he gave us and can highly recommend his tour to visit the city!

  • Rachel Carroll

Excellent walking tour of Lyon! Paul is a nice guy with heaps of fun facts and a great sense of humour. He brought the streets of Lyon alive for us in a holistic way with his understanding of history, sociology, engineering and politics. With some yummy food and drink options recommended too. We took both his tours and enjoyed them thoroughly.

  • Kathy Mendel

Taking a walking tour of Lyon from Paul is the BEST thing to do while in Lyon. So informative and it enhanced our experience of the city 10 fold. I would never have seen so many unique corners of the city or known its history. He has great suggestions of restaurants including where NOT to eat which is just as helpful. Thanks Paul!

  • Bernard Francisco

Paul's tour of Vieux Lyon was excellent. He clearly knows the history of Lyon and over the course of our tour told us many interesting stories of buildings, passageways and people. He is articulate and witty. We were very glad that we followed his suggestion to visit the art museum and the cinema exhibit during our stay in Lyon.

  • Marcus Wilde

Paul is a fantastic guide with a wry sense of humour balanced by in depth knowledge of the city he obviously loves. He is patient and good humored controlling a group of nearly 40 with a strong voice and clear guidance. Good source of local knowledge too for restaurants and shops. Book a tour, you won't be disappointed!

  • Fridrik Freydal

Highly recommend doing this tour as your first stop in Lyon! Paul is very knowledgeable in regards to the local culture and history, and provides you with plenty of great insider tips which can enhance your stay. We did the Vieux Lyon tour, and we plan on doing Paul's other free walking tour during our next visit. Thank you!!

  • Luciano Santana

I passed a great time with Paul in this guided walking tour. Anyone can see his is very passionated with the history of the city and it is impossible to not fall in love with Lyon after the tour. He passed very interesting and usefull informations and also tips of places to eat and visit. I definitely recommend this tour.

  • Alina Alina

Walking tour with Paul was really great - we enjoyed it, learned a lot and we very much appreciate his dedication and knowledge on the diverse topics he was speaking about. He is also just nice person. One of the best free walking tours we ever participated in (and we did a lot of them in different cities around Europe).

  • Claire Malcolm

Great walking tour. We did Vieux Lyon tour which didn't involve too much distance, this was good as it was during a heatwave. Paul managed to keep us in the shade for most of the walk while providing some interesting insights. His website is also very useful for recomendations, we used many of these. Thank you Paul!

  • Sarah Jaffe

Paul was an excellent and knowledgeable tour guide who showed us a variety of neighborhoods within Lyon. We learned so much about the history and food of the city, including the secret passageway traboules. Our group had an awesome time and loved his tour and recommendations for what to do in the city!

  • David C MacTaggart

Paul was an amazing guide! His historical perspective helped us learn more about Lyon than we could on our own. We liked his first tour so much, we signed up for a second which covered a different part of the city. Would highly recommend both!!! We appreciated his tips on restaurants and what to do.

  • Christian

  • Cymru Jon

We thoroughly enjoyed our free walking with Paul. We opted for the Vieux Lyon tour and it was a good introduction to the old town covering the cathedral, several of the passageways, local restaurants and other sites of interest. It was a flat easy walk and included lots of history on the area.

  • Jacqui C

I chose to do both of Paul's tours and I can't recommend them enough, each one was different with minimal overlap. Paul delivers the History of Lyon through stories and humour. Very engaging and time passes quickly. Plus, his knowledge of where to eat and get good coffee is exceptional..

  • Zachary Menteur

Paul offers an exceptional free tour of Lyon. He is clearly passionate about the history of Lyon and it really shows with his depth of knowledge and enthusiasm. My Wife and I were so impressed with his tour of old Lyon, coming back for his city tour was an easy decision. Thanks, Paul!

  • D Keller

Paul is a fantastic guide. He brings Lyon to life. I strongly recommend any tour with him, but I took the general Lyon overview tour, which includes some of the old town and some traboules, as well as traboules in the Croix Russe section of town. A terrific introduction to Lyon.

  • Debbie Campbell

If you are heading to Lyon be sure and book one of Paul’s two free walking tours - or both if you have the time! He loves his city and shares tips you’ll use every day of your visit. He also knows so much of history of Lyon that you’ll leave the tour full of fascinating facts.

  • Inga Bentley

This was a wonderful tour highlighting some of Lyon’s best spots, honoring the history of the city, and learning about current culture of the city. While this walking tour is family friendly, I would not recommend with a stroller. There were a LOT of stairs to walk up.

  • Ben Foley

I've done many free walking tours, and Paul's is the best I've been to. He is full of interesting facts and anecdotes, and the 2 hours goes quickly because he doesn't linger on any one topic or in any one place for too long. I can highly recommend his Vieux Lyon tour.

  • Yu I Yu (Evan)

I enjoyed the tour very much. We walked around the old town and some other areas. I got lots of information about Lyon, things to do, restaurants to try, and places to go. I also received an email after the tour with more travel tips. Absolutely recommend this tour!
