On 26th March 2022 when I passed by this marvellous artwork I took a click of it. Later when I learned more about it today I found it necessary to share it with my friends along with three more pics from the net. The strange story behind the naked girl dancing with a dolphin by the Thames BY CHARLIE LAWRENCE-JONES 05:00, 25 AUG 2019UPDATED13:56, 19 AUG 2019 Thousands of Londoners and tourists alike walk past this sculpture every day, many stopping to appreciate it and the spectacular views of Tower Bridge beyond. Girl With A Dolphin has stood in the shadow of London's most famous bridge for almost 50 years. It sits in the middle of a fountain and shows a girl dancing with a dolphin. The girl reaches down to the dolphin as if suspended in water, her hair floating above her. The dolphin is swimming up towards her, the motion of dancing captured in bronze. Each new angle shows a different view of the dance. It was made in 1973 by the sculptor David Wynne. Mr Wynne, who died in 2014 at the age of 88, enjoyed a long and successful career with many of his works focusing on animals. He studied zoology at Cambridge University but this was only a step towards his calling as a sculptor. In fact, he set himself against the academia of art, never formally studying it. He preferred a far more practical approach, before making Girl With A Dolphin he swam with the animal for hours. In a 2009 film made by Victoria Salmon, Mr Wynne explained: "I am celebrating the animal. I am not trying to make anything new. There is nothing new under the sun but the truth must be stated with each generation. I really believe that's so." His work often involved animals with other notable sculptures including Guy the Gorilla in Crystal Palace Park and, perhaps his most famous work, Boy With A Dolphin. The latter can be found on Cheyne Walk in Chelsea. It was made in 1974, a year after Girl With A Dolphin, and the themes are the same. It shows a boy playing with a dolphin. Holding on to its fin as he is pulled through imaginary water. The boy in the sculpture was modelled by Mr Wynne's son Roly, who was nine at the time. Roly tragically died before his father, taking his own life in 1999. The statue on Cheyne Walk was dedicated to Roly, a memorial to the son that Mr Wynne lost. Both of these statues are engineering marvels, using double cantilevers to hold the weight of the seemingly delicate bronze. This technical feat allowed Mr Wynne to capture the movement of scenes portrayed, of the dance and the play. It ensured Girl With A Dolphin, and her brother down the Thames, continue to be appreciate by the millions who pass them each year.

What a lovely pace under the bridge and especially weekend street food Market. All the way connect with St Katherine doc. Shard, the other side of the bridge and. Castle. Green area for seat and all the summer function, live music it's just amazing and missing so badly hope everything will change we will see all the art soon.. The East is best because of few. Places like this.
The Girl with a Dolphin Fountain attracts a lot of photographers wanting to get ‘the shot’ there are many security guards in this area with strict instructions not to let anyone use tripod - real ‘jobsworths’. I am not sure what the exact problem is with tripods, because they can’t explain. So if you want a night shot with a tripod you will have to be a bit stealthy.
As far as fountains this is a good one. The dolphin and the girl look great together. Some might confuse the girl for a mermaid, but no, she is a girl. And it is a dolphin. Great views of the Tower Bridge too. Best to go in the morning before the sun gets too harsh. We went in the afternoon and that’s why there are no photos for this review.
I came across this work of art a while back when I used to cycle a lot. The amount of times I drove passed this area and didn’t realise there where features like this planted all around london. I only got to explore London properly from cycling! 1973 this was made… that’s 50 years ago now!

I like it although I would love it if it was working it's a shame it wasn't when I visited as this was something I really wanted to see on my trip it's such a great design and looks great by the Thames and by tower bridge so a great place to relax when taking a break although it would be more relaxing if it was working.
This is a very picturesqe statue that is close to the Tower of London and just outside the large Tower Hotel. Its setting, right on the Thames, means you can get a lot of atmospheric and scenic photographs of it with Tower Bridge, or other landmarks on the South Bank, in the background
A lovely place to sit with some benches and some restaurants in the hearth of the city. Unluckily there was no water in the fountain. Nice architecture view onto the bridge and the shard. Easy to reach with the tube and not so crowded.
This pretty fountain can be found in the equally pretty looking formerly 18th century warehouse in the heart of St Katharine Docks. The fountain features a a girl vaulting over a dolphin. Imagine those ancient Greek vases of athletes
Beautiful place to see the Tower bridge, less busy as not many people walk down this way. There are seats as well where you can sit down and if you keep walking away from the bridge you are in the beautiful St.Katherine's dock!
One of my favorite ornamental fountains in London. A beautiful sculpture with many perspectives and very artistic. A very good location in a tourist area and next to the river. Recommended to visit this artwork. …
Beautiful sculptural composition of 1973 by David Wynne, just a pity that the fountain did not work - perhaps temporary. Excellent view of London Bridge and the surrounding area, place for photography
Nice, serene little spot under Tower Bridge. It might be more bustling normally but today, during the early days of the lockdown easing off, it's nice and peaceful and the scenery is spectacular
There's a little market of food stalls here on the weekends that's actually got a few diverse food options! I believe there was malaysian / Indonesian cuisine? And Italian of course.
I've worked as a contractor in London for years znd just been with the wife for z week and noticed and enjoyed the sites this being one of them thankyou London .
Slightly away from the congested tourism of Tower Bridge and the Tower of London making this a surprisingly tranquil spot in central London with great views.
Recently Virginia Wade confirmed she had been the model for the girl

A beautiful statue of a girl with a dolphin and a fountain overlooking the river and Tower Bridge.
Tower Bridge looks most beautiful from here, as well as a very nice pool and sculptures
Lovely art in a beautiful setting looking up at the wonderful tower bridge.
I was expecting it to look more beautiful, the way I have seen it in pics
that's a cool statue, worth checking out if you're walking close by
