Golden Horse is our go-to downtown spot for Chinese food. In fact, it has been for the past 18 years. We get takeout every other week or so, and it's always fun to catch up with the staff. I'm a big fan of their noodles, and the salty crunch of their Pepper & Salt Pork is heavenly, as is the squid. Oh, and definitely try the string beans and the eggplant! The Hot & Sour Soup is also excellent! They give you so much food, there is enough for two good-sized meals - at least. The pandemic was hard on downtown in general, and we're grateful this gem is still here for us to enjoy. Golden Horse and the kind folks who run it deserve your support.

Kid-friendliness
Our kids grew up eating their favorites at Golden Horse. The staff know them by name, and vice versa. So rare, and so nice!
Wheelchair accessibility
There are no thresholds and a double door entry.
The food was good, and it was quickly served. The restaurant has the appeal of being a great Chinese restaurant. One thing that I found a bit troubling was a dead crab and fish in one of their tanks. It's not clear how long they have been dead for, but doesn't seem safe to eat. I would be rather displeased if I was served either of these. The point of having live crab and fish is to serve fresh food. The dead crab alone would make someone ill if they were served it even after being cooked. Edit post owner reply: A live crab shouldn't be upside down and live fish circulate water past their gills even if they don't move. I'm plenty aware of what these creatures look like when they are alive. Both the crab and fish were dead, there is no question about it. You may consider ensuring your "live" stock is actually alive rather than your shameful responsed due to lack of accountability.

I have a great affinity for visiting hole in the wall restaurants wherever I travel to, and this restaurant certainly fit the billing. It's in Portland's China town, surrounded by some abandoned and vacant restaurants and businesses, but dont let that scare you away. While Golden Horse isn't much to look at inside or out, the food and service more than makes up for it. Once we placed our order, the food was ready within what seemed like minutes. It was hot and freshly prepared. Each dish had a ton of flavor. My favorite was the Spicy Mongoloan Beef. The waitress on staff was overseeing the entire restaurant, but made sure the needs of each table (including ours) was met. The prices were also good for the quantity of food received. All in all, this was a great dining experience. I would highly recommend giving Golden Horse a try if you're looking for Chinese food and in the area.
Stopped by this restaurant while at work for our lunch break and the food was amazing and on point but for the money spent you get so much value. We were starving and yet there were still left overs for some of us. If you want authentic Chinese food that has a great atmosphere and amazing service for a good value I would highly recommend stopping and trying this restaurant.

I've lived in Portland my whole life, and have never found a better Chinese restaurant. The best Mongolian beef I've ever had, the best orange chicken I've ever had, the best Kung Pao chicken I've ever had, the best snow fungus soup I've ever had, the best egg flower soup I've ever had, the second-best oolong tea I've ever had, the best prawn congee I've ever had, the best tofu I've ever had, all at this restaurant. And I've visited China on three separate occasions! I rarely take the time to write reviews, but this place deserves recognition. Be warned; the portions are massive, the free tea is DELICIOUS but strong in terms of caffeine content, and whatever the hell they put in the little dipping cups of soy sauce is addictive as hell.
Excellent food. The soup is much better than typical. I had Orange Beef and it was not spicy, but flavorful. Since writing the above, I've returned again. The food at this restaurant is actually exceptional. While the general atmosphere is that of a diner, the non-fancy interior would make you think that the food is also going to be plastic tasting or simple. But the surprise is that the food is wonderful tasting, plentiful, and inexpensive. I'm not sure that I would take somebody here on a first date to impress them as it's not a fancy restaurant. But I think they would be impressed with the quality of the food. Maybe not a first-date location, but certainly a second-date location. Highly Recommended!
I recently ate here for the 4th or 5th time. It's darn good old-fashioned Chinese-American food and I think some more authentic dishes as well on the menu. I had Kung Pao chicken extra spicy and the hot and sour soup. It was well prepared, and they made it extra spicy with fresh jalapenos which were stir-fried oh so good with just a tiny bit of char. There really is something magical about food prepared in a well-seasoned wok. The prices are also pretty darn good. That's the main thing I like about Golden Horse is that it's really cheap and really good for the price.

Combos are $11 and $12 for dinner. Food is great for American style Chinese takeout, service is always superfast and friendly. It's always pretty sparse inside when I go, but that can be a nice thing to you can find a nice quiet intimate little corner, just relax and enjoy

One of the last standing Chinese joints in downtown Portland that has kept it going with great food from authentic Chinese dishes to the Americanized combo meals. Very well priced. Lunch specials are no joke. Hot fresh food. Hard working people. Sophi is always ready to greet and serve efficiently. Good PDX old school place.

Delicious authentic Cantonese style Chinese cooking in modest old town Chinatown surroundings. The neighborhood is improved and cleaning up from the peak pandemic days. Dishes are wholesome, generous cooked with quality fresh ingredients. The chow fun is on par with the best. Peking ribs, tomato beef, salted fish fried rice, salt and pepper squid, in season vegetables, seafood were all excellent. Rice dishes on the back page are a great value. The fact that Golden Horse has been in business for decades is testament to its food and resilience.

$13.95 for "Spicy Hot" Mongolian Beef = Bleh! Gristly meat, Wayyy too many Onions - no doubt 1/2 of the container, very little noodles, a few slices of Jalapeno pepper, and more bland than flavorful, AND Absolutely NOT Spicy or Hot. Which was a huge let down because we were looking for spicy/hot! $8.95 for Veggie Fried Rice = Bland, had to douse with Soy Sauce for some flavor. $8.00 for 8 Fried Shrimp = More batter than shrimp. Overall, very disappointed we gave this restaurant $32.40 for something that should have only cost half that amount. Definitely do not recommend, and definitely will not be going back! Bleh!
Found this place by chance on a weekend trip Friday night. My group of 6 people were the only dine-in table that night. We ordered congee, black pepper sizzling beef, beef he fen (sorry I don't know the english name), yuzi doufu, and veggies. The auntie providing service was very patient with us, and provided great recommendations when we weren't sure what to get. The bill was so reasonable - I think it ended up being around 100 for 6 of us before tip.

Price is fantastic for the food that you receive might have a small wait because food is prepared fresh and is piping hot upon arrival to your table food is very good, hot n sour soup if some of the best. It is a wonderful family owned and run business. Customer service is great, establishment is clean, lunch specials the waitress Sophie is a sweet heart. It's one of the reasons I miss living downtown so much. Everyone I've taken has returned and it is the place to meet and break bread You WONT be disappointed!!!
Downtown Chinatown Food. It's delicious. My favorite Chinese place in Portland par none. I recommend sitting in where you can to enjoy a cup of tea while you wait for your food to be ready. Plus plenty of options. I've had a variety of their food. And my favs here would be their Orange Chicken and their Peking Duck.

Peking Duck, Sweet & Sour Chicken
The hands down best Chinese food I have ever experienced. Whether it's the authentic Peking Duck served 2 ways or the old standby; Orange Chicken, so tasty. I even liked the squid. I quadrupled the number of dishes I have tasted in my life at this one setting. Try one, so good. So try another. Found only one dish I didn't care for, but I am certain it wasn't due to quality just my limited palate. I actually tried 10 different dishes. So full. Helpful service, be nice if they spruce the place up a bit.
Never ceases to impress. The tofu with black bean sauce is just out of this world. Took a friend who had never been and she liked it. We split 3 quality dishes with her taking the leftovers. Been coming here for years and will only say its a travesty the place is left off the latest top 10 poll by the local critics. Think many are too put off by the so called lack of " ambiance". Lol. The establishment is clean and well kept up and the food quality is really what counts at the end of the day.
Had online orders to go. Very quick. Delicious food. Portions are big and great for the price! Had combo #4 &5. First time trying this place. Was amazed with fried rice. I missed my favorite childhood spot and this brought back memories. The rice flavor was very similar with like a shrimp flavor and its been hard to find anywhere else. I was so hungry forgot about pictures but definitely coming back soon!

Solid Chinese restaurant. Good food. We ordered Mongolian beef - it was really delicious, I definitely recommend it. Brazed tofu with vegetables - there was only three small pieces of tofu in the dish , and the sauce was very bland. Buddhist delight chow mein - great fresh veggies. Very strong lemon grass taste. Not your average chow mein - fresh tasting and good.

Step back in time and experience yesteryear prices alongside exceptional Cantonese cuisine. Earthy spices mixed with savory sweet sauces pepper assortments of meat, tofu and vegetables. Its hard to find top-tier food at 11$ a plate. This is the place. Find your sweetheart and retreat to a quiet Cantonese corner to enjoy some of the best Southern Chinese cuisine in Old Chinatown, Portland.

Braved the neighborhood to walk several blocks up to Golden Horse for dinner last week. It was so worth it! The food was fresh and delicious. I’ve been craving more of it since then and will be back again this week. The pea shoots with garlic are a favorite and they were perfect, as was braised tofu and broccoli. I’ve heard the congee is amazing and so is the mu shu pork. Evenings the neighborhood was pretty chill. It was even a nice walk.
Great prices, huge portions. Wish the staff was more welcoming, smiled more, more attentive and wash the windows, and clean the front door of smudges. Can't beat the deal...all of this for $7.50! Can't be beat. But, if they shampooed the carpets, put a coat of fresh paint, and at least cleaned the front doors, more customers would surely come. Need more servers too. Great tasting food. Some of the most juciest BBQ pork I ever had.
You know the Legit score of a Chinese restaurant by the people eating there and we have never been disappointed by these guys. The same waitress always working the front, has come to recognize us when we come in and we have taken the time to learn "Thank You" in Mandarin to show our gratitude. It's worth the trip downtown to have lunch here, and while you do take a walk around Chinatown and take in the history and culture.
Golden Horse is my favorite Chinese restaurant! My family loves to come here whenever we're in the downtown Portland area. Service has always been friendly to us, and food comes rather quickly. Everything I've ordered here has tasted amazing; they have the best egg flower soup and Chinese fried chicken I've ever tried. I would also highly recommend their chicken lo mein and salt and pepper squid.
Really great family place. Been eating there for years. Love these guys!

They’re open for dine-in! I have been coming here since I was a kid (25+ years) and it holds a very special place in my heart. Many restaurants haven’t made it in Chinatown but it’s so good to see Golden Horse has survived as one of the OG. My 70-year old mom was so excited they were finally open for dine-in (hence the to-go containers since we thought it was only takeout!).
Love this place! Really great and tasty food. I recommend to give it a try! Unfortunately the neighborhood is quite shady, I would recommend to take a electric scooter to the restaurant. And don't be here in the late night hours.

Sure, the restaurant is a little dated and run down, but the food is amazing. It's so hard to find real good American Chinese food where I live, and this place was really, really good. And fast. The chopsticks were surprisingly nice, too. No cheap disposable splintery wooden ones. We're definitely coming back next time we're in the city.
Nothing but drunk homeless people to look at and engage with. Beef was fatty and jiggly. Mushrooms were tough and hard. Lipstick all over our dishes. Lovely place. Had a fantastic time. Left the food. Yuck!

Last time I was here, it was Lunar New Year 2018. I had wonton soup, and a lobster dish. Didn't have my phone with me then. Today, I just had the wonton soup. I choked on water just now, mea culpa. Good thing I had that wonton soup to comfort me! If Chinatown has no more dim sum place, their wonton soup will comfort any sad soul.
Great food and fast service. We would have tried everything on the menu if not for the inflation and gas prices. 10/10 would recommend the fried rice and honey walnut shrimp. Their spicy beef dish is not spicy unless you think black pepper is “hot”.

Amazing authentic food. I have traveled to China on a number of business trips and this brings me back. Very authentic and delicious! Would recommend this for large or small groups. Fast and friendly service. Portion sizes larges so plenty of leftovers! Looking forward to those.
I love delicious crispy fried Chinese food and this restaurant gave me exactly what I wanted. I am enjoying my food right now. The MarFar chicken and fried shrimp are perfect, the sweet and sour fried pork is also very good. Good portions for the price as well. I will return.
I often frequented Golden Horse over 20 years ago when I was single, and then my wife and I went often early in our marriage. Haven’t been as often lately just because it’s not as convenient now. I went for a special banquet and am glad to say the food is still superb!
Ordered delivery. Food came fast and was very hot. Salt and pepper squid, general tso's chicken, and potstickers were all ok. Egg rolls were standard but tasty. Shredded duck chow fun was really not good - gloopy sauce, lots of cartilage, and just tasted bad.

Authentic Cantonese food. Ordered mustard green with rice. The chef added a lot of ginger which is perfect. Nice light lunch. Large portions, good prices, great customer service, though the place is a little stuffy.
The service was fast and courteous. Food was delicious! My daughter got a spicy chicken dish and I got an oyster dish. Portions were generous! The hot and sour soup was some of the best I've had in Portland.
This place is authentically Chinese, and absolutely amazing. It reminded me of the years I lived in China. The only way it could be improved is if they brought out fresh sliced oranges for dessert …
Great foodd outweighed the part of town it was in. I asked how long they've been in business. 22 years and counting. Everything we ordered was good.

hello sorry to say I recently ordered the general sou chicken. and tasted mold!! will not be going here ever again!!
Great food, large portions, family style. Peking duck almost anytime without calling ahead. No complaints.
The place reminds me of cafeteria style eating but the pink chairs are soft and the food is delicious
