This store is conveniently located in a shopping center with Petco, Whole Foods, Target, Taco Cabana and other retailers. I am not a big reader, but I heard HPB buys books, records, magazines, and other types of media. While cleaning out a relative’s home, I decided to pack some books in boxes and take them to HPB to see if they might have any value. I originally opted to donate them at my local library. Unfortunately, most libraries do not have the space to house much outside of what they already have in stock. I made an appointment with HPB and took all the boxes, 9 (NINE) to be exact, no exaggeration. After I unloaded the boxes, they ask you to remain in the store until your offer is ready. All the items I took in for review were dated from the late 40’s through 2010. I took in records, old magazines and a lot of books (A LOT!). My appointment started at 5:30 pm. at 7:14 PM, I was called over the PA system to review my offer. I was afraid some items wouldn’t “make the cut” and I would have to load them back into my car and once again be on the search of where to put them next. The lady who was assisting me said they would be glad to take it all and donate or recycle what couldn’t be used. That sounded fair and convenient, so I was pleased. Then came the offer… $62.90 for all the items. I wasn’t expecting thousands, nor did I have any special attachment to these items, but $62.90?? I don’t claim to know much about what was being sold, but I do know some of the items were worth more than my offer. In hindsight, I should have taken small loads in at a time or maybe even better, I should have found a dealer who specializes in older media. Bottom line, I was tired of waiting, and I just wanted to be done with it. I’m disappointed, not because I needed the money or wasn’t willing to part ways with the items; it’s more of the effort and time I took to only get $62.90 for everything. I think it was a rip off. Side note: as I waited for my offer, I looked around the store. They had an old Teen Beat type magazine with the Beatles on the cover. The one displayed was in the same shape as the two I was selling, but mine were 2 years older; older meaning worth more, I would think. Theirs was selling for $30.00. I wouldn’t expect to get $30.00 for mine (I understand they have to make a profit), but you would think my total would be higher with those 2 valuable items. In the mix of all my other items was records from artists like Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole. If the books were worth much, I would think the records would be. I wish they would have a system to break it down and show you what each piece was worth. Oh well… lesson learned. I will never waste my time like that again. After you accept an offer, they print a receipt for you to take to the front to cash or trade it in for merchandise in the store. The store itself is clean, the staff are all friendly, and they have a large selection. They will also order books for you from their other HPB stores within the metroplex and have them sent to your local HPB at no charge. If you decide you don’t like the book after it arrives in the store, you don’t have to pay for it. All in all, I most likely won’t return. I would be a peeved if I strolled through the store and saw some of the items I sold. They were older and rare, so I know I would recognize them instantly. I hope this review helps others. If you have the time, check out other resources. It might be more beneficial. (p.s. I write lengthy reviews no matter if it’s 2 stars or 5 stars)

Horrible store with horrible employees. Always very unfriendly staff. Never any smiles or real willingness to help. They even lie. I asked about new inventory and was flat out told, "no, nothing new, just same old stuff" even when I saw a cart of supposedly new items. Half an hour later, saw the same clerk who told me "no new items" scanning and putting items on the shelves. I picked up a few of the items after she placed them on the shelves, and yes they were new items I had not seen previously. Price tags with today's or yesterday's date. Wow. She flat out lied to me. Disgusting. The old grey haired bearded man is always rude. Grumpy, mean and rude. Always. His bad attitude rubs off into the other employees. One evening, I saw him very rudely tell an older customer "we are closed" with no smile, no friendliness, nothing. The poor customer seemed somewhat shocked and didn't really know what to say except to say " are you kicking me out?" Grey haired bearded man wouldn't say anything other than a very unfriendly "we are closed." Customer was chased out the door and wasn't told "good evening" or "please come again". Nothing. That same evening as I finished my purchase at the cash register, the grey haired bearded guy kept telling me "we are closed." I paid, walked towards the front door, exited and told the grumpy old guy as he was holding the door open, "good night." No, he couldn't be bothered to respond in kind. Nothing. Just couldn't be bothered to say "good night, good evening or thank you." It seemed to be too much of a effort to be half way decent or friendly to a customer. Oh well, it's his loss to navigate life to be perpetually angry. A smile goes a long way and I tried, but he was completely unreceptive. It's sad really. I have never seen a genuine smile or any kind of happiness ever in that store. It's dower, bitter and and just plain unfriendly. Sad. Please find some happiness even if it's just a small thing. Life is short, don't let it slip by.

It's a tough business. Inventory costs are high; labor cost is high, and rent is even high. Retail survives if it provides niche products with great customer service at reasonable prices. HFB can do very little with costs but can do something about customer service. I had gone in to buy a paperback for my reading from a book club. I asked the clerk at the cash register for it. They have the books on the shelves in alpha by author and titles in the same genre. How confusing is that? Pick one! The grumpy clerk works off and returns with it without saying a word. The reality is that it is an old title for $8 in paper back. OK, I get the price and inflation, but attitude I don't tolerate. Keep the book. NO Thank-you I PASS

Used to love this store. Me and my fiance are regular customers at HPB. Today we came in and received an awful attitude from older male worker named Robin. While I was paying for my books and my partner stepped away from me (about a foot) and came back, Robin told him to get to the back of the line, loudly and in an aggressive tone. I have never been more embarrassed and appalled. It was not necessary to embarrass us in front of other customers. My fiance tried to apologize and Robin interrupted and told him "TO THE BACK". Honestly disgusting behavior and we will never return. Thanks Robin!

  • Kim CB

Meh. Make sure you want what you purchase from them- only 1 week to return books if you don’t want it- also you have to give your name n phone number like it’s 1999… the guy at the register thinks it’s a very lenient return policy that people like to take advantage of. Oh! But don’t worry they won’t call you after asking for your digits. Like please, don’t try to compare yourself to Amazon where you have far more than a week to return an item. It’s more of a hassle to try to return something there than to just keep it. Weird experience and lousy sound system. I’ll stick with Amazon.

We visit this Half Price Books often. There’s ample parking here. And its location is good when running errands as it’s close to many shops that we frequent. This one is huge and offers a good selection of books and other items. Workers are friendly and helpful. They also have a big clearance section in the back. We’ve also bought t-shirts here too as they occasionally put them on clearance. Tip: Check them even while they’re hanging on the clothes rack as they keep them there even when on clearance.

Ordered a book at Half Price Store. Delivery before time and was new. Great store to sell your books and purchase all kinds of books to learn from. If ordering on line there's a discount. There is other merchandise in store to buy. Clean store. I enjoy visiting the store for years. Staff is trained well to order, call you when your items are ready. My item was received ahead of schedule. These are excellent books for children, too Drop by to browse. Great recycled books

You're sure to find an overpriced item that they bought for pennies on the dollar and a moody staff member that probably moved here from Portland Oregon. It would seem this staff attitude may actually be embedded in the culture of this location because I've experienced it for many years with several different employees. Other than that, thank goodness this place exists. I've spend a lot of time and money here and nothing can really replace it, but the hospitality sure ain't Texan!

  • Lauren Nicolas

This new location is perfect, for starters, it is much bigger and better organized than it once was at the old place. It's better located too, once you are done shopping you can wander off next door to Whole Foods, or 5 and Bellow, if you're into that sort of thing, they have plenty of parking spots as well, no worries there. If you're hungry there's a Taco Cabana and a Mediterranean buffet in the same lot, again....it's a great location.

I often Have No Trouble Finding Older Movies And Collections For A Great Price. I Also Went Here A Few Years Ago and Traded In My Old Games. I Received A Good deal and Even got A Coupon For an Additional 10% Off Future Purchases. The Staff Has Never Missed A Question About The Inventory and Can Definitely Point you in The Right Direction. If You're In The Area, Stop in And Reminisce. You May Even Find A Cool Gift For A Friend.

I havent been into half price books in a long time, but my daughter and I went a week or so ago, and I found a book I was looking for and one I never heard of. I also asked about the 1st part of the book I was looking for, and the staff found it in the system and ordered it for me. The book came within a couple of days, and they held it for 3 days at the front. Everyone was super nice and helpful. Thanks half price books!

  • Kathi Lokay

About 700.00 + minimum hard back top seller books, ( none older than 8 years) some still top sellers past 2-3 years or currently on the best seller list. Gave me $40.00. About 10 years ago got 80.00 for much less. I think the guy heard me tell someone I was moving. If I was not so tired I would have taken the 40+ books they didn't give me a dime for and donated them WILL NEVER EVERVSHOP THERE OR "DONATE" AGAIN.

  • Yisselle h.f

Called to verify wether or not they had a book in store, they said that they had a few copies left. Drove 30 mins to get there, and when i went in i asked if they had it or not and they said that there was maybe an issue with the computer bc when they checked it said that there was a copy left, but no one bothered to check physically if there actually were any copies. Waisted my time.

  • Patricia Regudon

Great store. I always spend more money there. I go there for looking a book. They always have what I am looking for. Then I see other good books. I bought devotional books that are awesome to read every morning. Thanks so very much for having great books. I am old school. I still like to touch, smell, & read real hard back, soft back books better than reading a book online.

  • Ernesto Gamez IV

Love the store, but there are problems with some of the staff. The lady who works on the weekends during the early afternoon has such a bad attitude. She was extremely rude. Poor customer service. When asking about the prices if certain items about already purchasing 9 books, she responded with “You can go check.” Extremely unprofessional. Hope this changes.

  • Steve Steinberg

Go to Half Price Books for very good prices on used books. Their selection is good, though not huge. Books are well organized into logical sections and sorted within alphabetically. The store is brightly lit and inviting. Staff is friendly. They are open for a lot of hours. The parking lot in the store's shopping center has plenty of spots.

  • Jennifer Bounds

Appreciate the ability to sell books here but they really rip you off on the prices. It’s better than trashing but maybe not better than putting in a neighborhood lending library. Staff are unpleasant. I talked to 3 - only one (young guy) was friendly and the other 2 (gray hair guy and brunette girl) were blatantly rude.

  • Christyn Hurbest

I really like supporting this book store. With all these streaming services people really don't buy DVDs anymore, but I like to buy the ones that charge on streaming services. The have a website where it will show you inventory, and if you will call the store they will find it and hold it for you. Great customer service

  • Momo A-K (Momo Af)

Very friendly and very knowledgeable staff all more than willing to answer questions and the selection is always a treasure trove if you're willing to look. Also they buy used items like books small electronics and games. I go for CDs and vinyls but they got more if you're trying to find something that's a Hidden Gem

  • Claire Bear

Half priced books have great selection of books and staffs are helpful and friendly. I just wish it was easier to find new books to read. with so many on the shelves sometimes it's hard to find the ones based on the vertical titles. Other than that, I really like this bookstore! They also have cool stationaries.

  • Nina Gutierrez

We are ruined for all other bookstores!! We love stopping by this bookstore when we come to Sprouts since it is right next door. We head straight for the clearance section where you will find items beginning at 99c . this store also has all the books at 1/2 off publishers price and gifts for everyone you know!

  • E_Ram

They bought some very expensive books from my wife. Paid her not even an eighth of what they were worth. All the while acting as if, and I quote, " you're wasting my time ma'am" very disrespectful and very professional. My advice.... Find another book store if you're interested in selling any book whatsoever.

  • Nicole D

I’ve shopped here for years, but today was my first time selling media to them. I didn’t become a millionaire, but the process was smooth and easy! I recommend shopping here (massive selection of books, comics, vinyl, etc.) for anything you need or want. Excellent customer service, super friendly folks.

  • knives.

I didn't know what I was expecting, but I was not disappointed!! I love the selection of books here and the prices are really good. I definitely have some I plan to go back and get. If you're an artist they have some lovely books too <3! art books, art guides, etc. Will definitely be going back.

  • Haley Z

My mom and I brought in many boxes of old engineering books. These books were going to be throw out, so were hoping we could give some a new home. Luckily, Rene and Micheal who looked through our books were very patient and helpful. Overall, had a great selling experience and would return.

  • Bob Martin

I love the store I used to work here many years ago. I’m just upset that they’ve decided to close all the inner loop locations. Makes no sense because now I have to drive 10 miles to go to half price books! Other than that I love the selection and variety of books videos and music!

  • Camille Graves

This store was very organized and neat... The customer service was on point! The only slight drawn back is, it did smell like old stale books, but if you don't have heightened senses, you probably won't smell nothing, but if you do, this is my heads up... I recommend this store!

  • Fern Carpenter

Declined my purchase four times yet I was able to go across tha skreet and buy a beer. I guess it must be a problem with the systems. I’m bootless. I keep being antagonized. I don’t smoke crack and I can pass my own drug test. I just wanted a book and Wakanda forever.

  • thc productions

My wife and I have been shopping here for a good while, we remember when they were in the other end of the building. We did find a few books on our lists. The clearance section used to be a lot better, didn't see any paperbacks, which is where we find new authors.

  • Daniel Dell

It’s an okay Half Price Books. I like it, but it’s honestly not as fun as the one by the Rice Village Arcade or the other Westheimer one by the Schlotzsky’s. And yet, those Half Price Books were closed following the pandemic in 2020. This is good, but not as good.

  • Nate Church

This store is a gem. I love exploring, perusing, and almost always end up getting something. Extremely friendly staff, plenty of selection, and pretty well organized. It’s hard to imagine someone disliking this place. Book worms and readers will love this store!

  • Swasti Niramaya

This place is big. Costumer service is friendly. I hope they have a reading corner in this place to improve the interest of ppl coming here. They can hold your book without any charges! You can take it within 3 days, if u need more time u can call them up :D

  • Nikki Twokay

Went to half price in search of some random, funny books for my coffee table. Eric, the guy working, was knowledgeable, charming, friendly and helpful above and beyond expectations. I’ll definitely be back as long as y’all have people like him around!!

  • Luis Rauda

Great place to buy and sell books! They also have lots of other cool stuff (music, games, art supplies, etc.) This particular store is pretty well kept and organized. The people who work here are also very nice and helpful. Check it out if

  • Cyber Lycans

Helpful as always, this place never lets me down! I'm like a kid in a candy store when I go, usually searching for one or two specific books and always leave with far more than I planned lol, how could you not when the prices are so great?!

  • Antonio Helm

I was having lunch, at Veegos and saw the half price books. I decided to go as the once ubiquitous store is not to be found inside the loop. This store was clean and well stocked.. the staff is a bit off putting but not rude. I left with a

  • Katrina Lassberg

A wonderful experience. I picked up the book I ordered and found some lovely holiday cards too. Then found an extra special gift for my kiddo, a harmonica for Christmas. Thank you for making my shopping experience so wonderful & peaceful.

  • Ashley

The customer service is great and theres a decent selection of products as well. However, I expected more out of a new location. I love coming to the bookstore but if that means bumping into other customers the entire visit, I won’t go.

  • Danielle Carden

This is always a good bookstore to visit. I also had an experience selling some books there last week. It took about 10 minutes and I made $15, which wasn't half bad. I was pleased to get them off my hands and it was an easy process.

  • Pam Irick (PamIAm Gaming)

Pretty disapointed since they moved locations, I guess they moved to a smaller store and now a lot of the really neat stuff they used to have is gone, especially Doctor Who! I used to be able to go in there and always find something

  • David Ward

Semi decent selection. Actually kinda disappointed since I couldn't find anything interestingmin non fiction space science. I mean, we are in Houston home of Nasa. I'm looking forward to shopping at 1/4 Quarter Priced Books instead

  • Robbie A Ross

I love supporting local book stores before Amazon where I can't even leave a review!! But half price always has a new read aka an old read or record. I recently bought a vintage tarot card deck thats priceless+ for less than $40 !

  • Hemp Honey

I found some good deals and the staff was quite helpful. This location seems to be busy. It's good seeing other book lovers excited about reading. They have a great music selection as well. Check them out if you're in the area.

  • Jane Madden

The store was well-lit, very neat, and clean. Books were well-organized. Staff were pleasant. Prices were competitive. In fact, the book we purchased tonight was several dollars below the lowest price available on Amazon.

  • Marquita Gregory

This place is always so welcoming I love it. I used to work here not at this location but the same people I worked with at the other location work at this one and they are great. The selection in books is unbelievable.

  • Lydia Loera

Friendly staff and COVID-19 friendly. I have been here at least once a week. Most of the staff is book knowledgeable but not all. Still...great books for great prices! Also great for CD, old LP's, and DVD lovers!

  • James Nicholas

Went there with some very good books - more than 50 in number, some even best sellers - all gently used. They offered $6. Needless to say, we chose to donate them instead. Wish I could give them less than 1 star.

  • Norma MacLeod

Fantastic. Brought some books in and within 20 min. They gave me $13.50 which came in handy. Also purchased some books I liked. Ordered a book at Half Price Store. Delivery before time and was new. Great

  • PicturesOfFood IHaveEaten

Good selection at this store. I deducted one star because selling books did not give me as much money (to spend in the store) as I expected. They refused what I thought would be some good resale books.

  • Lauren

The new location is so nice, airy, and spacious. Every time I come here the associates are very pleasant, as well as the customers. Always a good experience. Can’t beat the prices either!

  • Yelper Lou MC

Great location with lots of books. Staff was kind of friendly. I wish they change the anchor photo from old location. Current location is next to Target by Walnut Bend on Westheimer.

  • Christian Gonzales

Ever since they moved to this smaller store, I haven't purchased anything. The selections are more limited versus their old location and the layout of the store is funky and weird.

  • Alex Ochoa

Very nice experience. This was my second visit and everything is very organized and clean. Plus you can't beat the prices and the books are in great conditions for the most part.

  • Ramona Roze

First time at this location and the selection does not disappoint. It is very busy on the weekends, but you will find plenty of helpful employees in the store to assist.

  • Julius Covington, Sr.

I didn't find what I was looking for but we did come up with several items and I do have several books being shipped to me. Definitely will visit again!

  • Plastic Tree

Snobs should not be working in a bookstore! I understand if you are having a bad day, but every visit is the same. Clearly these people have issues

  • Sue Berlinger

The new location is very nice. The staff are always accommodating. Very friendly, excellent service, and the store is clean, and well-stocked.

  • Manuel Caceres

Amazing games and books. Lot of the stuff is over place tbh I wouldn’t sell anything here. You think GameStop is a rip off No they are

  • Elza Créatif

They have a very good selection for many tastes and age groups. We've bought books for ourselves and as gifts as well as postcards.

  • Tati Ali22

The white lady with short hair checked me out and didn’t say one word to me, not a greeting or a goodbye. She just stared at me.

  • Ronald Clark

This is a much smaller new store. I really do not like the layout. It's way harder to find subjects. Small=less subject matter.

  • Dana Shelton

Great Bookstore! Great selection. Lots to look at !! And you can't beat the prices!!! I have purchased several New books here .

  • Craig A Pittman

My wallet was stolen recently. I was unaware about physical ID requirements to sell books. My gosh, they are used books. Ugh!
