Very reasonably priced, quality sushi. Been here several times and the service is always great. The group I run with prefers to order soup, a couple rolls, eat, order a few rolls, eat, etc...and they are always more than happy to indulge us. As the name suggests, sushi isn't the only thing on the menu, their udon dishes are pretty sweet too. I have only ever been here for lunch or very early dinner so I've only ever sat in the first** small room (I'm not even sure if there are any others), which can be a little loud if they are busy (or if there is a gossipy someone with an obnoxious laugh). TL;DR: Eat here when you feel like having a simple meal with great service, endless hot tea, surprisingly tasty and affordable sushi by yourself or when you're not looking to impress anyone (you'll impress them with a magical hole in the wall, not some fancy mediocre place with no flavor). Update: Years later.... Still fantastic. I've now sat in the other room, still small, but a little quieter. That udon cannot be beat. Hot sake still pours freely. Dinner for 4, too much sake, too much food.... And we barely broke $100 for the group. Cannot fathom anything to complain about. Don't miss this joint.

It was really just meh. Heed other reviewers' warnings that this could've potentially been a hole in the wall, but it wasn't great like we hoped it'd be. The server was kind and so were the other employees (possibly the owners), but the food was unfortunately subpar. We had a sushi roll, a noodle dish, and two rice dishes, along with a mackerel fish. My sister said the noodle dish tasted like just plain noodles in plain broth, and my husband's and my rice dishes were both soggy (the breaded meat should've been crunchy). The sushi roll was just okay. I personally thought the mackerel was decent, but it truly didn't make up for the rest of the meal. Sorry for the harsh review, but I was so hopeful for the place. I usually love hidden gems, but this time, it just wasn't quite hitting the hidden gem expectations. I'd come back if I were very hungry when in search of cheap food, but otherwise, I most likely won't be returning. Thanks for the wonderful service though!

We just went to Ichiban Noodles for the first time yesterday. This is a mom n pop restaurant serving authentic Japanese fare. I got the tempera Soba noodles and miso soup. It was a nice hot bowl of noodles on a frigid day. We're definitely going back. Next time I'm gonna try Shoyu soba and dumplings and some sushi. You won't go wrong eating here. Their sushi looks delicious. Well, actually, it all looks delicious.

Ok... The place was cold, the water was hard, the food was not better than the place at the mall (I got the teriyaki chicken that was fried? But not crispy), the shumai appe was frozen from a bag all white mystery inside with no flavor served with soy sauce alone, the rice was overcooked, the salad was straight dumped from a bag and had corn chips pieces which I really don't think we're supposed to be there, the vegetables (broccoli, carrots, and cauliflower) were also from a bag... property cooked but cold? next to hot chicken and by texture I think sushi rice, the bathrooms were clean but scary, services was ok. I am Japanese American, I really wanted to like this place but no. More than disappointing. Reading Yelp reviews first no one ethnic liked the ramen or noodles so I figured I go with what people liked... No.

  • Phoebe Sandtalon

Outstanding food and quiet atmosphere. Before going I was nervous due to a couple of the reviews, but I think those reviews may have been left by people who expected the kind of Americanized food and service local big chains tend to favor. The meal was very nostalgic. I will be going again.

All one floor, no step up to the door. I don't remember if there was a cove (bump at bottom of door meant to be stepped over) and the entrance has a tight turn, but the restaurant interior was all level and wide enough for easy navigation.

It was an unexpected find! The location wasn't difficult to find however one wouldn't expect to find such delicious food here. Our youngest daughters had asked for Japanese food since she really enjoys sushi. The service was impeccable, the food was of high quality and the restaurant was clean. Unfortunately it was 6:30 and no one else was there but it made eating in a dining room during covid a little bit safer for the 5 of us. I had the pork dinner, husband had the shrimp tempura dinner our three daughters chose to have sushi and they supplemented that with one getting seafood ramen, another got the eel dish and the oldest got udon with pork. All delicious and very generous portions the price unbeatable and if we lived closer we'd eat there once a month!!

Ichiban Noodles is a surprising delight. The exterior and interior aren't very enticing and look almost like someone's old house. However, the dining area inside is clean and the food is well prepared without breaking the bank. Pricing for most entrees is very family friendly and portions are adequate for normal appetites. The staff has always been very courteous and customer attentive. The dining experience is very much like being invited over to your friend's mom's house for tasty Asian fare. The inside is unusually absent of any soft music or filler noise but the space is small enough that voices from other customers fill the void. I would strongly recommend giving their sushi and noodle dishes a try for a pleasant affordable lunch.

I have been coming to this family owned restaurant since I was about 8 or 9 years old with my grandmother. That's about 25 years now This restaurant holds a special place in my heart. From authentic homemade Japanese and Chinese food, to being the place to go to for a quiet atmosphere, I have had so many memories and events at this place. I highly recommend it. It's still run by the original owner Louis. Here is a picture of us! Major thumbs up for a hole in the wall place that stands the test of time

Loved the food! We've been thinking about trying this place for years and finally did this weekend. Cute decor, friendly reception and service. I loved everything we ordered, especially the chicken teriyaki. I took off a star because we came with two young kids, and they forgot to put in the orders for the kids' dinners. So two hungry children had to wait while their orders were entered and prepared, all the time watching mom and dad eating their own meals. Mistakes happen, but people with young kids will know what a big deal this is. Still, we'll go back. We all loved the food.

  • e

Came here for lunch with my family and it was so disgusting. I got the tempura udon and it was easily the worst I’ve ever had. The udon had cabbage piled on the bottom so there were barely any noodles and the broth was strange. The tempura wasn’t light and crispy, but instead was coated in thick batter and was cold. The service wasn’t great. Someone came to take our order, bring us our food, and then the check. No one checked on us during our meal. I definitely will never come back here. The food was awful and very far from authentic, well-made Japanese food.

  • Annie L.

Impressed! Very homey atmosphere and very nice waitress who served us. She gave us hot towels to clean our hands before and after our meal. I had the san-sai noodles and tempura vegetables along with a salad with ginger dressing that I highly recommend! Give this place a try soon!

This place was absolutely amazing! Don’t let outer look fool you. Inside was a cozy place with very kind staff, and you could smell the food as soon as you walked in the door. The food was delicious! I am a big fan of sushi and have tried out many different places. This one was by far the best I’ve ever had. The taste was amazing and it was as fresh as if you had gotten it right on the coast. I highly recommend checking this place out!

Fantastic little place, off the beaten path. You will not get better sushi. And don’t forget to try some noodles. Truly one of those hidden gems, hadn’t been here since before Covid. I am wondering what took me so long. Just as great as I remember. Open six days a week, 11:30am to 2:30pm and then 4:30pm to 9:30pm. Closed on Sunday! Stop by, your missing a treat.

Don't let the looks fool you, this is by far the best sushi/ramen in town and is also the cheapest. I found this place 20 years ago taking a friend to work and have been coming here weekly ever since. I've tried a lot of ramen and sushi in a lot of cities and this is the best I've found period, this couple knows their stuff.

Hidden Gem, interesting smell in restaurant, that I couldn't figure out what it was. My nose wouldn't let it go, more annoying than anything.. Maybe a Fabreze to get rid of it... Only other thing that bothered me was drinks, Coke/Pepsi, tea, water or Saki... So water it was, and a warm (room temp) bottle it was.. I had to ask for a glass of ice. Now the food was amazing. When I go back, I'm getting carry out...

An interesting small place. I had the soft shell crab app. in ponzu and the katsudon, and it was more than enough to fill me up. The soft shell crab was definitely a different take for me, but I loved every bite. The katsudon had a very nostalgic taste. It's was like comfort food and made me feel at home. The service was great and fast. Loved this place.

This restaurant has delicious food and the woman who took care of me was very polite and attentive without being invasive. The prices are good and my belly feels after my bowl of rice and fish. Also they've been around forever. I remember my dad taking my brother and me here when I was 11 so we could try sashimi, sushi, and tempura. It's comfortable and clean. The little warm towel before and after was a sweet touch.

Amazing food and environment. Simple and delicious. Service could stand for some improvement and consistency. Sometimes it's great, and other times it's as if you are bothering them by ordering. However, considering how great their sushi, tempura, noodles, and fried rice are....I am still a very loyal customer! That's how good. And they have the best soft shell crab I've ever had, and I've tried many places. Plus, their prices are equal if not cheaper for the quality.

I've been eating at this place since it opened maybe 20 yrs ago, but I hadn't been here since pre-covid days. Still a hole in the wall. Still good food. I had the udon noodles with pork cutlet and a side salad. Cutlet used to be crispier but noodles were still excellent. My son had bento box with sashimi and tempura with miso soup. All good. With tax $25. Not bad this day and age.

I visited this place for the ratings. I kept an open mind. Very nice owners and staff. Gyoza and miso soup were good. Entree was questionable. The rice and steamed veggies in my bento box were served cold. Maybe it was supposed to be served that way, but it was like eating cold leftovers.

As a local of Indy, and having ate at many of our sushi restaurants, I don’t feel this is one of the better establishments—and I’ll leave it at that. However, I feel I was ‘duped’ by the reviews. I think there is something suspect about the reviews, perhaps they’ve been curated. After the dining experience, and going back to reread the reviews, they’re incongruent to the overall experience.

  • Chris Howey

I love this place. I think it has the best and most authentic working class Japanese food in Indy. It's inexpensive, the staff is always friendly and attentive. It's not a big place and can be easily overlooked if you're not sure where you're headed because it's in what appears to be a converted single family house. Try this place. I'm sure you won't be disappointed.

  • Casey Knowlton-Key

Everything we ordered was tasty. Shrimp Tempura Udon, Crispy Pork Chop Udon, Brown Fried Oyster, Fried Gyoza. When we first arrived the small location and that it looks like a house gave us a slight pause but the food was good and things were clean so it didn't really matter. Thanks!

A wonderful little spot with fantastic food for an honestly too good to be true price. The store is ran by a nice older couple that is easy to see they take pride in their work, and love helping people through a good cheap meal. Any fan of Japanese food absolutely must check this place out. I promise you'll want to come back!

Hidden gem! The food is really good and the people there have always been really nice. The only reason I gave them 4 stars instead of 5 is because there's been a few times I have called my order in to go and have either had missing items or things just didn't seem like they were handled with the same care as when you dine in.

This place is a great example of hidden jewel. We frequently visited this place before the pandemic. Yesterday was the first time we returned and we were pleasantly surprised. I've been coming here for about 9 years. They are by far my favorite sushi restaurant and I've been trying sushi places all over the country whenever I can. The staff is kind and down-to-earth, food is delicious and a very good value. Sure, the place looks a bit rough, but that doesn't change how the food tastes!

I’ve been craving authentic sushi, so my friend took me here. Their fish was displayed fresh when you walk in-no wondering what chain it’s from. Also, the layout is cozy, and more importantly, the eatery is clean. Being vegetarian, it’s hard to find great tofu, and this place has it!! Would definitely return. :)

Eat here! Everything is good, so far. Small to medium selection of everything, but done so well. From the outside, the restaurant looks like a little shack in the middle of a field that speaks caution. This is a trick! It's Indy's best kept secret for Japanese food and sushi.

Great place to sit for a nice lunch. It's in a nondescript house in the Castleton area, with a small dining room. I have heard the sushi is wonderful, but I had to try the Yaki Ramen. Everything was very hot and fresh. The staff was very polite.

Services were okay. They have pretty good sushi IMO but the ramen was disappointing. The soup tasted like water and absolutely has nothing to do with Japanese ramens. And the pork on top of it was just as tasteless. Will go back again for sushi.

Perfect little hole in the wall. Some of the best homemade sushi I've ever eaten. The service is always fast, food is cooked to order and the atmosphere is the best part. It's small and quiet and relaxing.

I always try to find a restaurant that It's more homemade, made from scratch so to speak, comma and this is the place it is very good, it's probably the best ramen place in the city I highly recommend it.

My daughter had been begging for sushi and this was the closest restaurant to us at the moment. I’m so glad we came. Wonderful service, excellent food. I can’t wait to bring my friends here to sample it!

This is the bee's knees of authentic Ma & Pop Japanese homestyle. Wholesome real Japanese flavors in a warm, no-frills environment fills the belly with delicious food and the mind with nostalgic bliss.

GREAT place for inexpensive, delicious sushi! Hoosier Roll and Rock and Roll were especially yummy! Great salad with a ginger jalapeño dressing! Spicy with a great flavor.

Authenticity is a great word to describe Ichibam noodles, exelent service and better food. Is not a fancy restaurant but you will found a great selection on the menu.

  • Deepak Bhaskaran

The hostess and the owner are always polite and nice. Don't miss out on the green tea (unlimited refills) and sushi (probably the best sushi in the state of Indiana)

  • Jason Au

If you're looking for solid and reasonably priced Japanese food this is for you. If you expect traditional dishes, gourmet sushi you won't find it here.

My favorite restaurant in Indianapolis. I recommend the Shoyu Udon or any of the bento boxes.

When I lived in Indy I'd go here about once a month. I am visiting and needed to stop by still one of my favorite ramen shops.

  • Scott Kaufman

The sushi is excellent. Fresh and tasty. The ramen bowls need some seasoning to suit your tastes, but still good.
