"We attended the museum as vendors filming and photographing a wedding"
"Very interesting museum"
"Their previous exhibits about African-American history have been placed in storage temporarily because they are currently in a new building"
"This is definitely a must see in Charlotte"
"I really enjoyed the next exhibit this museum has called "know justice know peace" it was great to see police brutality examined up close and personally"
We attended the museum as vendors filming and photographing a wedding. The museum was easy to find and there are plenty of parking lots and decks(both paid around $10) within a 2 minute walk to the front door. The staff are very friendly and were able to help us out with all the wedding details. Again our main purpose was to film the wedding, but we were able to walk around and see all the attractions and get a good feel for the artistry. The museum is quite large and there is plenty of memorabilia to see. There are many attractions on both the main floor and upper levels ranging from sit down theater movies, to full size replicas of homes, school buses, shops and more. The attention to detail is spot on and the entire walk through was clean as could be. My only downside was that I wish we had more time to spend reading/seeing all of the exhibits! I would gladly go back again to visit here and read up on the history of this nation.
Very interesting museum. You go through all of the history of Charlotte and you're able to see all the good and bad of each time. I'm not American so I didn't know what the "new south" meant before coming to the museum. An interesting feature is that there are some bulletin boards where people write their opinion on post-its. And while you can recognize that the situation for black people has improved, from this you will notice that there's still a long way to go. Probably the best place to visit in Charlotte since it's a unique museum and you will probably won't see anything similar anywhere else. (Although I haven't visited all the US south so I might be wrong about this)
Their previous exhibits about African-American history have been placed in storage temporarily because they are currently in a new building. The new space is bright and filled with large photos, artwork, and quotes which helped me learn more about African-American history, especially famous black reformers. They will be adding more later, and hopefully they will bring back all their previous exhibits also. There was no entrance fee. I spent a long time looking at the interesting books for sale for adults and colorful books for children.

This is definitely a must see in Charlotte. Allocate enough time for it though - I budgeted about one hour because it was only three exhibits but I was there for about 3 hours! And that was with me hurrying through the upstairs exhibits. The bottom floor exhibit on the history of cotton farming, cotton mills, factory life, etc was AMAZING! I spent most of my time in that exhibit taking everything in. As an NC transplant from New England, I learned so much about NC's history from that exhibit. Upstairs there was an exhibit called Know Justice, Know Peace about the 2016 unrest due to the murder of Keith Lamont Scott. Very powerful exhibit.
I really enjoyed the next exhibit this museum has called "know justice know peace" it was great to see police brutality examined up close and personally. It was a touching experience and I loved seeing the things that have happened since and people who actually want to make a difference. It was honestly one of the best museum especially with how it relates to current issues. There were also exhibits that covered people who had been hung in Charlotte and the racial segregation within school districts. It was great to learn about and I hope a change is made. The museum was great though.
This museum is awesome. A little busy on a Sunday afternoon as it's half off on Sunday. I usually like to go alone so I can read everything. Alot of great exhibits suck as a mock Belk store, an old timey mill house, a barbershop owned by a Black barber and much more. If you now, you can see the Know Justice, Know Peace exhibit that explains the Charlotte protest a couple of years ago. Very informative as it was way more to it than people just protesting. I learned the layers. You can spend a couple of hours here if you take the time to read all the information. Very nice museum.
Great museum with just the right amount of information. Great way to spend a Sunday early afternoon. You can enjoy this place in about 2 hours and really learn a lot without feeling completely overwhelmed with information. I would highly recommend it if you are in town and wanting to learn about the area and get a sense of where things came from and how the area developed. They have a lot of interactive displays that let you experience the old cotton era. (Bring some hand sanitizer if you are concerned about stuff like that, they don't have any onsite.)
The building is gorgeous, the rest of the experience was terrible. We made an appointment to tour possible wedding options. Our contact, Brittany, was unprepared for our scheduled meeting. Considering we emailed her one week prior with our dates and expectations, we thought this venue was an option. We soon found that all the dates we selected were booked. Brittany wasted our time entirely, including our family that traveled to town for the tour. Next time, you can just send an email or make a simple phone call. Your customer service is weak, do better.
Of all the museums in the area, this one has been my favorite by far! The museum is well organized, with compelling exhibits and artifacts in each section. I loved the portions where you could actually sit and immerse yourself in the history (the lunch counter, church, living room with the TV set, etc.). The permanent exhibit on the bottom floor took up a good chunk of time, so I’d allot at least 1.5-2 hours for your visit here. I’d definitely come back again, and I’d recommend to anyone whether local or just visiting.
This is simply an amazing museum! All of their exhibits were spot on, the movies were descriptive into the point! I highly recommend this museum for anybody. We spent almost two hours just on the first level, and didn't get even to go to the second floor. We will definitely be returning to visit the exhibits we missed. This is a great museum to support, and I hope everybody gets a chance to go!

This was definitely a neat museum that I'm glad to have visited. It was a great start for an overview of the history of the carolinas which I thought I knew a lot about but it turns out I don't.. The museum had a lot of neat artifacts like the Machines they used for the cotton processing. I had never even heard of the Piedmont triad before so that was new to me and I learned a lot about that. Overall it's a cheap way to learn some solid Carolina's history that I have to give them props on for not whitewashing.
Fantastic People working here and loved the others I bumped into here who only contributed more to my experience! Just keep in mind field trips from schools do come here. I just waited a few minutes and they took their nose on so i could focus. Not to mention if you park in the near attached parking deck, bring your parking ticket inside and the museum will validate it and make your parking free! As for the exhibits and history they were all top notch and really helped you immerse yourself in the info. 10/10!
Please go see this museum while it still is here. Such a shame that it’s closing down. One of the best history museums in North Carolina. One of the only ones that truly tells the story of Reconstruction, unions, busing, and the growth of the Sunbelt. These topics need such more publicity, and this museum does an amazing job with them. Hope they can find a new home.

I was very disturbed by the content and whitewashing of this museum. The framing of "finding a new economic system" after white people could no longer enslave Black people is extremely problematic, especially as they had KKK regalia side by side with civil rights leaders and important objects. I am very concerned about the rest of the reviews speaking so highly of this place, when even as a white person — I found it extremely offensive. It's unacceptable in this day and age.
The 'museum' in May 2023 is mostly just a temporary exhibit on 'climate change' and its effects on the South and different populations therein. There are no artifacts or items of interest. The museum staff were very friendly and even checked our bags for us, but unfortunately I wouldn't recommend seeing this until they have the bulk of the museum back.

The museum isn’t big but it is filled with a lot of information. You will not be sorry. On Sunday you pay half price. There is garage parking next door that they validate. We went a block afterwards an ate. Bought a magnet for my refrigerator out the gift shot. This is a smaller museum but it’s really well done. Spent a couple of hours here reminiscing about the history of the south. Small kids won’t really get it but it will be very thought provoking for the adults.
Really amazing and eye opening museum, where you can learn about life in cotton factories, you can watch society changing through the centuries, you can listen up to some good old jazz music played in the radio, go to local barber or try old fashion in the boutique. Lots of information up to current times. You can express your feelings and opinions by writing notes on the board and you can also leave a video message by the exhibition exit. That's just amazing!!!
I really think they needed dinosaur skeletons. It is amazing to think about how dinosaurs roamed the area. People used theses gigantic beasts in the South for a wide array of uses on farms and in warfare. Most people do not realize that in the Civil War T-Rex’s were on front line duty in the South. If the great plague genetically engineered by the North had not spread and wiped out dinosaurs to the point of extinction the South would have won the civil war.
This was my first time visiting Charlotte in September, and it was awesome. This museum is so cute and quaint. They divide the different aspects of history into little shops in one museum. They even have a historical replica of a barber shop and a diner. It was a really enjoyable experience as I don't frequent museums as much as I'd like to. I will be going back to Charlotte in December and hope to come back to this museum. Would definitely recommend!
I’m happy I came here! I recently moved to Charlotte and I didn’t know the rich history behind this bustling city. I think all Charlotte natives or new Charlotte residents should come here for a history lesson. So good. The front desk staff was very inviting and the parking is validated if you park in the parking garage.

It's a wonderful educational hands on museum. Wonderful for kids. Thr only complaint i have is that at the beginning of the main exhibit has a photo of a lynching under a curtain you're suposed to flip. While on an elementary field trip with 3rd graders we had to have someone stand in front of it to hide it from the students. They weren't old enough to have a proper conversation about that issue. It would have been okay for older kids.
This Museum was not what you would expect. ! It had a great many interactive exhibits that were appropriate for all ages. It trace the history of Charlotte with regard to especially civil rights and integration. One of the best activities was making your own video. If you have young children under the age of 15, this really is a must-see. But I would suggest it for anyone interested in history. Plus with the membership it is amazing!
Nice exhibition on climate inequality, but we were expecting to see the old museum with historical exhibits that we saw several years ago. Looking forward to visiting again to hopefully see the permanent exhibits back on display in the new location. Also, there was no restroom available for visitors, so we had to leave to find one and come back.

My company had an event, where we listen to a presentation about local North Carolinians who have had an impact on the area. Then we were able to walk through the museum. They currently have three exhibits to look at, "No Justice, No Peace", "Cotton Fields to Skyscrapers", and "Let Love Reign". I only viewed the first two before we left. I learned a lot and thought they were interesting and made you think. Highly recommended.
Have been to the Levine before the move, and it was a wonderful experience. Interactive displays, beautiful panoramas, it brought the true south experience to you. What I saw today was disappointing. One room with photos/display fell short of the impact the Old Levine Museum left you with. Sorry, no photos.

A better than expected museum. The admission was reasonable with kids under 5 being free and all kinds of discounts for adults in their 10 dollar fee. But the exhibits were interactive enough to keep my kids entertains but informative that I learned things. The staff was great and offered a scavenger hunt out for my kids that they loved. Great place to spend an hour or 2 in Charlotte and learn about the south and Charlotte.
Great historian, she is soooooo informative, KNOWLEDGEABLE, sincer and willing to explain any exhibit you may have questions about. A true asset to the museum. The museum is an asset to the Community. I often take my out of town guest here to visit. Lots of exhibits, thought provoking displays, nice gift shop available. Bathrooms clean, entire staff is cooperative and welcoming. Shows appreciation for every guest!
The permanent exhibits at the museum elaborates on the history of the south and particularly in North Carolina centering around the different industries key to the state, cotton being one of them. The museum is central in conveying key facts about the struggles of African-American communities due to segregation. Admission is half off (works out to about $5 and change) on Sundays. Definitely worth checking out.
Great great great museum to visit. We loved everything about this museum. Pricing was great and parking next door was free. I hope they update their website to provide the exact address and name of the parking garage, for future visitors. We drove around for about 10 minutes before calling the museum and requesting guidance. Even then the representative had no idea of the name or address of the parking garage.
The experience was great it was talking about the incarcerated places in North Carolina and Arizona and how each state does something different for the people incarcerated for the color of their skin and what they did versus the whites. It's an exhibit that you should go see if you have time

I knew quite a bit about the south before moving down here, but what a wonderful way to see photos and artifacts from the history of the New South. You can spend up to two hours reading the placks or just a half hour to l an hour looking at the displays. They way the exhibit walks you through the years is well thought out.

Really cool, interactive museum featuring the growth of Charlotte and the South as a whole and the influence of people of color on the culture, history, and current social atmosphere. It's so great to see the actual living history of a place - particularly one with a mixed past (slavery, the Civil War, textile mills, and much more) - recognized and given back to the people. Convenient location too!
This Museum was not what you would expect. ! It had a great many interactive exhibits that were appropriate for all ages. It trace the history of Charlotte with regard to especially civil rights and integration. One of the best activities was making your own video. Day of the Dead cultural event free with free parking protect your ticket and validation at the front desk crowded but really cool with all the altars in exhibit that food is there to purchase lots of freebies and you also get to go to the museum which is really cool with the Roosevelt exhibit and all the things invented in Charlotte and slavery. Definitely worth checking out until 5 today
The Levine is interactive and filled with small and large artifacts to share the history of Charlotte and the greater South. The upstairs photography exhibit on victims of police violence is thought provoking and challenging. Our family has attended several events at the Levine including Three Kings Day, MLK events, and Juneteenth. They were all well organized, engaging, and informative.
1st visit to the new location. This location is not as big but is conveniently located near the Harvey B Gantt Center and other local museums. The Men of Change exhibit was amazing and very informative. The exhibit exceeded my expectations, it highlighted many historical and current "Men of Change".

This museum effectively closed, but had the name live on in a small exhibition space. If you're like me and come here looking for the museum described in these reviews and in the photos, it's not here. The staff at the new place are nice, but it's really not worth the visit.

Provides a decent history specifically for Charlotte. Focused on cotton farming followed by energy needs for those spinning mills and workers and culminating at banking. A decent history of segregation in schools and busing concepts were presented visually.

This museum is one of the best in the area. So much history and hands on experiences it'll make your brain bulge out. I absolutely loved it and appreciated the views it brang towards equality especially during these trying times in our country. I reccomend this museum for teens and up mostly because it is alot of reading, documentaries ect.. Not much for little ones to do.
This is a great educational museum. There is a discount on Sunday afternoon. The exhibits are mostly hands on (you can see and touch cotton mills stuff and not just view it all behind glass). It gives a fascinating look at the history of the area as it developed and changed through to the current day. They sometimes have traveling exhibits to introduce some new things.
Absolutely have loved this museum since they first opened in the 90s. Hate to see them close due to some new high rises that will be going in it’s place. I hope they find a permanent location soon. So much great NC history that should be shared.

If you like history, you will probably enjoy your time here. Even if you don't enjoy history it's still got some cool pieces. The videos they play inbetween rooms in the little theaters don't scream "New South," they scream extremely dull and boring. The actual exhibits themselves are really cool but the videos could definitely be updated. Reasonably priced.
Went here during Thanksgiving week while in town. It's pretty underwhelming. Studio-sized "exhibit" on one floor about incarceration that has little mention of Charlotte or even "the new South" except for a map and some posters. Rest of info is same stuff on the news. No restroom on site nor do they validate parking at the address provided on the website.
Please, go here. One of the best and most effectively laid out museums we’ve been to. It was full of relevant, interesting information and the staff was incredibly kind. Tip! Park in the garage next to the museum, not the open lots across the street. We didn’t know any better, but they said they’ll cover your parking if you do!
Fabulous museum and one of the highlights of my visit to Charlotte. They do a wonderful job of have you experience the history of NC and Charlotte all the way to present day. The exhibits are experiential and educational. Just see if you are in Charlotte. The people were so very helpful too. Best history exhibit we visited.
I'm so glad that I went there for I very much enjoyed it and I ❤️ it. There were so many people there and I took so very many pictures that I find myself looking at them several times each day and I have relatives in another state wanting to go there. Anyone that goes there will be so glad that they did!!!!!!! …
This museum located close to the 7th street market in Charlotte’s uptown, is a very interesting place to go. You can learn about the southern history and progress. They have many devices to show up and describe the pass through the time to nowadays. There is not parking lot, but you can find someone in the surroundings!
The entry cost is $10: per person. If you park in the parking garage next to it, they validate your parking. I spent about a hour and a half and learnt a lot about about Charlotte history.

I was in Charlotte for a day and was so pleased I included this as one place I visited. The staff was excellent and really made this tired ole Vietnam veteran feel good. I would highly recommend this as a must see, but allow plenty of time to fully appreciate the work that has gone into this excellent facility.
Really cool museum! One thing about Charlotte is they have amazing museums. Levine had very informative exhibits there's alot to read through and a lot of cool things to see. It also a nice size museum. I didn't have time to get through the whole museum so I will definitely be back next time I'm in Charlotte.
4 stars for the permanent exhibit. It was well laid out, engaging and had lots of things to touch/manipulate/use as picture props for the kiddos (and the inner kid in you). Not a comprehensive museum, but a good solid hour of Charlotte's history. The upstairs exhibit on diversity was a waste of time, however.
Interesting museum, giving you the history of Charlotte. I went to it when one of these free Sundays was on. I'm not sure if I really think it's worth $8 for the museum, $5 or $6 is a more reasonable price. Well worth going if you have a small family, there are some child friendly exhibits as well.
A very small, free museum that highlights significant people from the history of the area. Worth a quick stop. Can easily explore the entire exhibition thoroughly in 15 minutes.

Brittany was amazing! The venue was gorgeous and the tour was impeccable! Ms. Brathwaite made sure everything was taken care of and stayed by our sides through the whole process. I highly recommend Brittany for any of your wedding needs. She'll provide an optimal experience you'll never forget!
Disappointing that this is not the same Museum of The New South it once was. All exhibits are gone. Brought out of town guests here. Only to find there were just a few canvases on climate change.

Fascinating local and regional history, well presented. As a visitor to Charlotte, I came away with an understanding of how and why Charlotte grew through railroads, cotton mills, commerce and banking, all with an honest discussion of race relations and social injustice. Time well spent.
I was here as a chaperone on a field trip. Personally, i thought it was great. The exhibits were well done and there was so much history to read about and experience in this little place. I did think it was kind of a odd choice for a first grade field trip, but the kids really liked it!
Very courteous staff and the exhibits are detailed and visually appealing. It does lack seating in view of exhibits so if you have a hard time being on your feet for extended periods you might struggle. The exhibits are clean and it's an enlightening experience. I recommend it.
I was going to give this a 4star review but I went on a Sunday so it was under $5. It is small and an emphasis on hands-on and video but I think that will help it reach a broader audience. It has some amazing historical material mixed in and those were incredibly affecting.
Not only did we get to see wonderful exhibits , but we also got to chat with some of the most kind people! They practically planned the rest of our day and definitely showed us the best kind of southern hospitality! 10/10 recommend visiting!

Nice little museum with lots of southern history, very civil rights focused. Lived in a milltown/hubcity my whole life and still learned a few things. Definitely reccomend for anyone not from the South and a nice experience for those who have grown up here as well.
The museum is well done. The layout is fantastic and I love all the different recreations of stores, barber shops and letting you really walk into them. Lots of good information and creative ways for you to interact with the exhibits, I would highly recommend!
It was my first visit to Charlotte overall and this museum is a very good place to learn about the history of Charlotte. I didn't get a chance to spend more time there. I plan on going back to Charlotte in the foreseeable future and I will revisit the museum.
Very interesting and educational museum! I am a history nut and still had a lot to learn from these exhibits. Also lots of interactivity for kids to learn alongside their parents! Great place to spend a couple of hours without being too long or boring at all!
Free Wednesdays from 5-9. When I visited, the featured exhibit was on climate change and social justice with very little physical art.

The museum is very nice and if you want to get to know about Charlotte and NC more then it is the best place to learn history. It’s better to plan at least 2 hours for visiting because one hour was not enough. Also museum has a nice gift shop :)
Bigger than it looks, and really interesting exhibits. Lots of hands on things: seeded cotton to feel, old turn of the century rooms to step inside (soda shoppe, old Belk Dept store, old timey kitchen, old farming shack etc). Pretty neat place.
Haven't been to the new location yet. The old location was great though. I enjoyed knowing the history of Charlotte and the region in general. From farm lands to skyscrapers and home of banks and fortune 500 companies. Charlotte has grown alot.
If you are visiting Charlotte this is a must see. This museum doesn’t just educate you but provides a fully immersive experience. There are several interactive exhibits and the location is perfect w/ample free parking right across the street.
Great museum from in central Carolina from1860s to present on often difficult topics. Nice effort to bring back up to current Charlotte with Latin diversity in the upstairs exhibit. Informational, encouraging and thought provoking. Well done.
This museum is essentially a history of the Carolinas post civil war museum. It was super interesting and gave light on how hard life was back then as well as how the area transformed. Very cool museum and would recommend any tourist to visit
It was actually a very nice experience. Coming from someone just visiting Charlotte for a couple week and not a museum lover (must add) I had fun and enjoyed learning the history of the city and how it has grown to be the city that today is.
This is a must-see! The staff were so willing to talk about the museum and encouraged my husband and I to keep roaming and finding out more things about North Carolina history. There's lots to see and a must go to place to be in Charlotte!
Liked how they made some exhibits as if on a city street with different shops. They validated our parking so it was free. Staff very friendly. Enjoyed!

This was my first time at this museum. It was such an excellent retelling of Charlotte's history. I'm sorry to know that it will be torn down to make room for luxury apartments. I do hope this museum will find a new permanent home.
This museum is a great display of culture of the South, which includes Charlotte, set out an interesting pattern that will draw you in. It's not just about reading but there are videos and interesting spaces. Well worth the visit.

Great museum! I spent so much time on the first floor learning about the history of North Carolina that I never made it up the stairs to see the rest. I would have loved to but my time is too short here in NC to go back.
Came for the Martin Luther King extravaganza. Wonderful interactive displays of black and cultural history and a potent time capsule of a 60s living room with civil rights march newsreels playing. Mesmerising.
I just shot a bridal portrait session at this Museum and will be there soon to shoot a wedding. I really enjoyed the old NC town replica there. It's a great place to experience some of NC history.

We needed to do something that didnt take all day and we Loved IT! To our surprise its half off on Sunday. A great short experience that has kept us talking about it all day.A great family trip.
Absolutely loved our experience here. Loved the crafts available for kids on Juneteenth. Can’t beat a free day at the museum for your children to gain some knowledge through hands on activities.
Loved learning the history of North Carolina! Clean, well managed, and informative. We have suggested this museum to others that were visiting from out-of-town. Very reasonably priced as well.
Family Reunion event held here. Interesting choice for our venue. Ability to see and read North Carolina historical information as well as share meal and fellowship with family. Two thumbs up!
Brilliant to see the history of this city and the special exhibit "Know Justice, Know Peace" had amazing timelines exploring schools, housing and policing in Charlotte. Powerful images.

Excellent setting guiding visitors across the history of the New South. Fully recommended for visitors to get a quick self guided understanding of NCs history.
AMAZING! So impressed by the learning potential in this museum, and a warning to us to not forget the evils of history as well as the evils today
Very neat. Loved the interactive displays. Plenty of stuff to see. Well worth the money. Big enough to keep you busy. We loved it.
Nothing about history in the museum, all it’s left is climate change propaganda and abstract style modern art
Great museums extolling the past, present and future of the African American community in North Carolina.
Great Experience especially for the kids! I love learning about our history and this was soo much fun!!
It isn’t even a museum anymore, it’s a one room “exhibition” thing
