I’m laying in Unit 7B as I write this review. I’ll begin by saying that the emergency department on the east bank was fantastic, and the nurses here on the West Bank have been great as well. However, the overall experience has been so negative that I wouldn’t wish this place on my worst enemy. Every doctor and/or surgeon I’ve worked with here at the West Bank has had terrible bedside manner; I literally ended up in tears after speaking with social services about this issue. It is abundantly clear that, at least in the thoracic department, patient care is not their first priority. Rather, business is. My “doctor” determined that I needed to stay hospitalized based on “symptoms” that I could NOT feel, that he could NOT hear with a stethoscope, and that he could NOT point out the xray images. Obviously, as most patients in this wing are in single rooms, they are more concerned about profit than patients. I’m also on MA, so it’s a guaranteed paycheck. To further exacerbate these issues, I could be at home right now with a water-sealed chest tube. Since I was admitted to the hospital, my vitals have been so normal that nursing only checks up on me when shifts change. Instead, this place would rather waste tax dollars by keeping me here at no benefit to me. The “doctors” and “surgeons” also do not understand the concept of real life. They are all but demanding that I get a surgery without having an answer for two important questions: who will care for me during recovery and how will I be able to pay my living expenses while I am unable to work? It’s not their concern; they wouldn’t care if I became homeless, so long as they receive their paycheck by doing a procedure and keeping me in the hospital. The situation has grown so terrible that I will be leaving tomorrow, even if I must leave against medical advice. It is abundantly clear that these “doctors” do not take their Hippocratic oath seriously; they are only concerned with generating revenue. This review got two stars because, despite how terrible the physicians have been on the West Bank, the nurses here are stellar, as were all of the staff at the east bank emergency department. I can only hope that this institution starts to hold their “doctors” to the same high level of patient care demonstrated by their nursing staff. Update: after receiving false information from a surgical resident that the surgery could be done bilaterally, I decided to proceed with the blebectomy and pleurodesis. Although the surgery went well, the post-operative care I received from the thoracic department was dreadful. I tried to leave AMA but was unable to secure a transfer to HCMC. Particularly heinous was my one interaction with Dr. Madhuri Rau, a thoracic surgeon. She and SIX surgical residents came into my room while I was still experiencing severe pain despite having a dilaudid PCA. I tried to explain to her that I once had a chest tube that was slightly misplaced and, once it was adjusted one or two millimeters, I experienced total relief. She told me that the X-ray (which gives an extremely limited view of soft tissue) looked fine and refused to

I came to the ER for a mental health crisis. When I was taken in I met with a triage nurse who asked me a few questions and then told me that I would be meeting with a doctor and I would be getting a psych assessment. After three hours, which fair enough it is an ER I get it that it takes awhile, I asked the nurse if there was any info on when I would be seen by the psychologist. They sent in a doctor who was with me for all of 5 minutes and asked me maybe 5 questions. 3 hours later, still waiting for the psych assessment I asked to leave, considering I had been there for 8 hours and they couldn't get a psychologist to see me. Instead the same doctor who had talked to me for 5 minutes came in and told me that I had agreed to be admitted and I wasn't allowed to leave. They wouldn't tell me if or when there would be a bed available and no one would answer as to why I didn't have a psych assessment yet. The next morning, still no assessment. I told my new nurse and doctor that if I didn't get an evaluation I wanted to leave as they couldn't give me any information on why or when I was being admitted. I had to call my mother who drove from 3 hours away to come in and help me communicate because I couldn't understand why all of the staff were treating me like a child and not answering any of my questions. Finally after 17 hours in the ER, I demanded to see the doctor again to ask to be evaluated by literally anybody before I was admitted to the psych ward. He told me I had already been evaluated, but because my mother was there, he told us he would double check. 10 minutes later a psychologist came in the room. They never evaluated me because they were using a psych evaluation on my chart from 2 YEARS AGO and they were going to admit me without me ever actually talking to someone trained in psych issues. Not a single member of the staff thought to check the date and instead threatened me with an involuntary hold if I kept asking to see a psychologist or leave. Needless to say when they realized their mistake I was out of there real quick. Gross incompetence, and the staff are real quick to strip you of your personhood if its a psychological related issue. I don't know how many times I asked to be evaluated by a psychologist, but for 17 hours not a single person thought to double check I had actually been evaluated? Instead they probably just marked me as crazy and moved on. I was treated like a child in trouble instead of someone seeking help. Do yourself a favor if you are in crisis and go to Abbott, where people will actually help you.

I got sent here on November 8th, 2022 after having a panic attack in Walter Library. I got sent there by talking to a professional and told me to get checked out by ambulance I became very non compliant with the library staff as I was overly stressed out due to having taking 6 classes at the time of this incident. When I got sent to the ambulance, the EMT's where very professional and gave me Ambien. I arrived at Fairview Hospital disorientated but could still talk and see my surroundings. I was hoping to get discharged in a hour. After I was dropped off the ambulance, I was sent to a psychologist of how I was doing and gave her my honest answers of the situation I was experiencing at the time. Later, I was told to go into the Mental Health Ward where I was placed on a hospital bed with other people that were also experiencing mental health crises. I did not like where I was being placed, but the hospital did not have enough beds in separate rooms as it was at full capacity. I waited for an excruciating 2 hours to get released from the hospital. I asked the younger nurse if I would be discharged in less than an hour and she said, "You'll be discharged once you get a green sticker from the doctor if the doctor approves your mental evaluation." This statement said from that nurse is not entirely accurate. Later an older nurse gave me Ginger Ale and Crackers as a snack. That same nurse later gave me Zofran which caused me to become drowsy and tired. Due to a pinched nerve from deadlifting in the wrong position that Friday before I got sent to the ER, the Zofran that older nurse gave me caused me to become nearly paralyzed and had a hard time seeing reality after I was discharged. I ended urinating outside in the streets at around 1:23 AM November 9th due to the Zofran. I had a hard time concentrating on my surroundings while walking almost a mile to cross the Mississippi River to the Delaware Street Parking Ramp to find my car. My father had to pick me up and was sent home. The next day I was feeling somewhat better but very nauseated then at around 4:25 PM, my head started folding back on its own and had to get sent to the ER again. The second visit I had to be put on IV fluids to have the head to stop leaning back on its own. I nearly had bad neurological damage that could have went very badly. Thankfully I have recovered since then. Shame on the nurse who gave me Zofran. It nearly changed me psychologically in a bad way. If I could give 0 stars, I would.

This place robs you both in billing and devices. My daughter had her phone stolen while we were in the ER after the nurses took possession of all her stuff without me in the room, and when I asked for her phone when we could hear the device, the woman somehow couldn't find it. Once I started asking about the phone, we were rushed out of that area without it to another floor. I returned within the hour and no one could find the phone. I spent weeks working security, the staff, and finally the facility administrator without success. The memories lost were priceless. My daughter was having a hard time with life between bullies and her friend committing suicide. Finally after more than three months worth of trying to get the phone or compensation, from Fairview I was informed me they would do nothing and weren't responsible for this situation. My daughter had her phone stolen by a ER nurse, and they did nothing! They didn't even apologize, and blamed it on me since it's my responsibility as a parent. But they stripped her while I was talking to the doctor without me present, stuffed her clothes in a bag and stole her phone!!! Who does that while someone is in a crisis?! Last but not least, our regular clinic referred us here for help with scarring. The doctors and facility charge here since they are independent organizations. For a cortisone shot I was given a $900 bill. For a 10 minute visit and 30 second fix. So yeah this place is legally robbing you. Go someplace else if you can.

My dad had a surgery appointment at this location last Wednesday. It was a very good experience. Before entering you will have to provide information and take a photo to have a sticker as a permittion to go inside the hospital. They also have an area to leave the delivery order at the door if you order sth outside. I think this is a way for the hospital to control and protect the safety of their staffs and patients. From the front desk staffs to the medical team all very nice, polite, patient, friendly and knowledgeable. They care very well for the patient and the patient's family. While I waited for my dad's surgery in the lounge, the staff would regularly come in with updates from the medical team or ask if I needed anything. They have computers, desks for eating or working, charging cords, tea, coffee machine and even pen and paper for coloring or entertainment. I think they also have pillow and blanket if needed. There is also a canteen right downstairs to buy food or other drinks. After being transfered to the recovery room, the patient will be given a list of TV channels and menus. Food for patients is also diverse and easy to eat. The care team will also regularly visit and check or the patient can press the care team call button when needed. When you ready to get home, they also have a staff to transfer you from the room to the car as needed.

I know someone who is there and it already doesn't sound like a good place there is no emergency call button on the bed or in the bathroom in the room and this person is disabled needs a walker wheel chair needs assistance to go to the bathroom and help walking and has seizures and a senior and this person says they are far away from the nurses desk to yell for help if needed the person also stated because they are in the sych ward part that they are not allowed to have there cell phone Incase of an emergency for help the person also stated that I swear anything happens to my family member in there I'm suing y'all they also said the staff and or nurses don't come and check on them enough often and they don't seem to know how to take care of someone with diebetes as well besides giving a sliding scale insulin I'm talking about watching her carbs and on a specific special diet they are also steeling her money each day I am calling her card and there's money that's locked up in there security area and she hasn't been able to use her bank card in there someone is stealing her money I am reporting them

Since st joseph moved their psych unit to this location ill leave my review here as well. got abused psych staff . told my my cultural beliefs were wrong an that i am very selfish and angry person. they kept me against my will while the psychiatrist degraded me each day during my stay. also their food serviced provided me no viable nutritional even tho i have a limited diet. got probably 20 grams of protein total over 5 days stay. they should know men need more than 5x that, as well as other crucial micronutrients. “hospital”. these people couldnt put a band aid on to save a life. and they dont. beware the psych unit if u actually need help/ meds/ compassion/food. human an patient rights violations galore .but don’t expect any reparations. Patient Relations sent me a “im sorry” letter after locking me in for 5 days, starving me, degrading me, an then sent me the 1k bill. not worth it and i hope they shut this place down or hire someone competent

One of the slowest hospitals I have ever been to, I came in at 1am with nobody in the waiting room and am just now being released at 5:30am. I came in just to have a boil lanced, friendliness of the staff was not great, it seems like everyone was unhappy to have a job here. I really don't understand why it was rated so high, I am scared of the other hospitals around the town. I pray I will never need to return to a hospital in this state again. I have two holes in my arms from lack of knowledge of starting an IV, I never have had anyone have trouble starting an IV in me and definitely never had it hurt while doing it. I would have probably put up with the pain, if I would have had a clue what the experience was going to be like. I hope things are being worked on to address problems such as mine. I came from Ohio and this experience has made me really appreciate what I have back home.

  • David Comstock

I had a phenomenally positive experience here! Every single professional who interacted with me at whatever level was friendly, competent, collaborative, patient, and kind. From the surgeon and anesthesiologist to the food service and custodial staff, I was treated like a human being with dignity and respect and kindness. Even the food was pretty good. I can’t imagine how I could have been better cared for. I tried not to be that annoying patient always ringing the call button, but that first night after surgery I needed a lot of help and they were always quick to respond and cheerful about helping. When they were busy with another patient they always gave me an accurate estimate of how long they would be. I’m so grateful for the care I received.

I delivered my babies here earlier this year. I can't speak highly enough of the staff in L&D, and the staff in the NICU. The entire medical team taking care of my babies were absolutely wonderful. They were passionate, caring, and attentive. The care given was compassionate and top notch. My babies were born quite early and needed extensive treatment. I am so thankful to the staff. The babies are doing very well thanks to the excellent care team. My older kids are also seen in the University medical center system. They also get the best care around. If your children need medical care, look no further than the University of Minnesota system. You will be very happy. The adult care is a different story, but that's for another review.

I experienced seeing one of the psychiatric assistants spraying and wiping things down with toxic chemicals and than she would keep her gloves on and than touch patients as she was doing vitals, so she would get chemicals onto patients. I also experienced the mistreatment of patients by the staff and I also witnessed certain psych assistants acting like sociopaths. I highly recommend not going here for psychological help. The doctor who was assigned to me diagnosed me with the wrong thing and freaked my family out, he was old, tired and misunderstood everything I told him. Take care of yourself and go to better places! The only good thing about this place was the food. They need staff with more emotional intelligence.

ZERO STARS!! Definitely NOT at all helpful. My niece was just born there yesterday. Staff was rude. Not helpful. Refuse to answer questions. Multiple staff were given different stories on how to feed newborns including one or 2 saying that a newborn babygirl Does NOT need to eat for the next 2 to 3 week and only requires ONE DROP of food during that time ??? Are you kidding me? Very dissatisfied and DISAPPOINTED! Had my Niece crying and the mom crying for hours. Shame on them for treating my sister, her husband and her newborn like this. These are the most uncaring people ever! Definitely not recommending any baby help here! That 7th floor staff is something else. Just about ALL of them. SMH!

Dr. Sembrano did an amazing job on my back surgery. The nursing staff is second to none in every way. They are caring, compassionate and listen. HOWEVER if you ever cross paths with Dr. HSIAO I suggest you either run or just kill yourself. He is a sadist and doesn't care about anything but money and certainly not your health. I'm less than 2 weeks out from a MAJOR back surgery and he tells me he doesn't understand pain management but still cut my pain meds in half. I threw up numerous times and have to have another back surgery to fix the damage from throwing up. I hope some day he suffers like I am and nobody listens! He is truly a horrible doc and should be disbarred. DR. HSIAO AVOID!!!!!

  • Muna Ibrahim

Zero Stars! Please Do Not Make this a first stop in case of emergencies. This is not a hospital to be seen at, unfortunately I wish we had a good experience being seen here but that was not the case. The staff was not compassionate, they did not have answers to our questions which could have been easily resolved if they looked into the lab results. They were only pushing their agenda to do a surgery that was not needed. They released my mother under the impression that she was safe to return home. Only to find out that she needs to be back in the ER immediately. The staff was unprofessional, had no compassion. Please do not be seen here for your own safety.

My girlfriend had our baby here just over a month ago. She is now experiencing some stomach issues, and when she called about it they scheduled her an appointment for today because it may be serious. Oh, but she can't bring our 1 month old son with her! Yes, they expect her to leave our 1 MONTH OLD son behind, on a few hours notice, because she should see a doctor today. So is she just supposed to leave him in the car or something? I mean, seriously! These people are medical professionals with years of schooling, but they don't have enough brain cells to rub together to be able to conceive the problem with that policy?

  • Leslie Sterling

The ER trama staff nurses were Excellent a long with the ICU nurses. The doctors on the other hand are a different story. i work in the medical field and when I made a suggestion or would question them about things thet were quick to ignore me and blow me off like who does she think she is I'm the doctor not her. It is also pretty bad when departments are not trained on how to use devices. Correctly and the daughter or husband who have no medical experience have to hook the patient up to the machine after just watching ICU nurses do it. I can say I would. Not recommend this place if you have a choice!

  • Zach Schneider

From check-in to every single person that treated me, this was hands down the best medical experience I’ve had in my life! The staff was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. Gavin made me feel like I was in good hands right away, acknowledged that the situation was unfortunate, but reminded me to keep a positive attitude because Ill be back out there in no time. Dr. Oberstar did a great job of reeling me back in and giving me healing instructions. I was a walk in and was seen within 15 minutes. In and out of the whole ordeal in an hour. Well done team, truly something you all should be proud of!

Can’t find a specialist that cares about their patients in Fairview . I need a specialist each time I get “ I’m not a specialist find someone else “ and when I do find one I think the person is intense and argumentative , unable to professionally care , listen with kindness , empathy and patience . It seems they need better doctors who care less about their egos and more about their patients and listen to your patients when they express what they need instead of being rude and unwilling to listen and verbally abusive. Fairview Get better doctors and specialist who care . Verbal abuse isn’t okay !

  • David Chuzles

Awful experience!!! I thought I finally could get help. Set up an appointment, there is NO PARKING!!! If you happen to have a vehicle under 6'8" you can pay $10 PER HOUR! What a racket. I had to park a mile away in hour parking zone. When I finally get there they tell me they won't take health partners??? I asked why this wasn't disclosed when I scheduled this online and the girls at the counter didn't seem to care at all and were completely neglegent about the issue and were obviously not going to do anything about it or even communicate the issue! Hope this counts for something.

Came here for medical attention on a laceration. About 10 different staff members had helped me out for various things, and they were all very kind and understanding. However, the whole process took almost 5 hours from check in to discharge. But, as far as I know, almost all hospitals are like this. That plus COVID plus the fact that my injury was not life-threatening probably factored into the long visit time as well.

  • T YUMMIE BREWER

I give the hospital five stars they go above and beyond for all patients they work with you and not against you they work for you and not for Corporate America. Came in with a chest pain come to find out I had pneumonia and they really went above and beyond to make sure I got my antibiotics correct the staff was good the food can use a little work but other than that everything was great I love it there thank you.....

  • Csilla Castonguay

I had surgery here and it was a great experience until my last day here. They couldn’t find transitional care for me so the social worker came in all of a sudden and told me I was being released right away. They refused to keep me overnight to give me time to arrange a ride home and someone to stay with me. Instead they hired a cab and kicked me out. Very disappointed.

  • carmen flora

I used the valet, one day my car is missing for over an hour, something seemed different with my car. The next day, I took a picture of my milage and fuel. I had an extra 170 miles on my car, with a little more gas than when I valet my car. The manager got very rude and in denial, even though I had PROOF. He told me to not come back. Fricken thieves.

  • Susan Archerd

So many upsetting experiences here! Visitor guidelines change depending on the person you talk to. My mom was in her room for hours at a time with no one checking on her. When physical therapy came, she couldn't participate because she had been sitting in poop for who knows how long! The physical therapist was awesome! He tried so hard to help her.

  • Dennis “Kasia” Uhrmacher

Saw two sets of doctors here for my wife's health problems. Both sets were of no help and tried to say she was fine. Even a so-called veteran specialist in her condition said she was fine. They did provide theories. Other doctors have since looked at what they said and have shaken their heads in disbelief at their conclusions. Avoid at all costs.

  • Terrence McBride

Terrible service in a shiny paint job. Parking is expensive and awful. I've had to go several times for a surgery and have not met a single pleasant person. My nurse had a known racist insignia tattoo on her hand. Like get out of here. You can find her now, she's still there. Working with black people under sedation. Super cool.

  • Ray Zaffke

The nurses care, doctors are skilled, but this is not a healthy organization. They have systems in place that causes mistakes and missteps on a regular basis. If possible, go elsewhere. My adult son had a transplant here and he feels more like a hostage/experiment than he does a patient. Poorly managed, "fair"view at its best!

  • natasha kabitz

Went there at 1030pm on a thursday night for my daughters eye being scratched, and the people that work there are saints. They were handling a difficult man that wasnt complying and the nurse and security gave him lots of time and patience. They all work so hard there, thank you all for what you do.

  • Chersti Horsch

Waited all night to get mental health and chemical evaluation for our adolescent son. When psychologist/ assessor finally came at 830 am spent 10 minutes with our son and 15 minutes with us. The best advice she could give us was call 911 and let him get taken to Lino Lakes! …

  • Doug's

5 med surge is the worse care that I have ever had. Dr. Omar isn't the best doctor. I asked for a different doctor and got told no. Nurses and the nurses aides are great. A couple of charge nurses could use some classes on edict. If I could give a big 0 I would.

  • Ezra Kenyanya

The service we okay, don’t have much to complain or be exceptionally excited about. Only thing I would say is the room was EXTREMELY COLD! Even after asking they adjust the temperatures nothing could be done, this just made the whole experience wanting.

  • Rachel H

Came here for a great surgeon (which we got) but the facilities are poor (outdated, room sharing), pain management is poor and the front desk staff is rude. Would not recommend unless the physician you’re looking for will only work out of this hospital.

  • Ashley Smith

Yesterday and today was the worst experience I've ever had at Riverside. The only upside was the very caring nurses and nurses assistant. To anyone looking- go across the bridge to the U of M ER by the Phillip Wangsteen Building. Better and FAST care!

  • Elle Dykema

I recently had surgery here and had an amazing experience. Everyone we encountered was so kind and helpful. I was so surprised how wonderful the experience was. I even received a get well card from the staff a week after. An overall great experience.

  • Bonnie Hamann

So not their fault detox beds were full. Couldn't admit my friend. But check in receptionist awesome job and listens! Triage person was empathetic to situation and went above job description to try and help. For early morning my experience positive.

I want to thank the transplant team to include the staff that took care of my wife after her surgery. Very professional and caring! Best hospital we have had the pleasure of dealing with. Thank you for helping my wife!

Went in for my sons injured thumb. Excellent care the whole time! Dr. Morris was very thorough and Gavin got us set up with a brace. Very helpful!

I worked there over 15 years. I'll never go there as a patient again. Sad to say.
