We visited here and upon walking up it was a busy and chaotic outside the entrance. Men approached us with song for tips and it was hard to get them to leave which made us feel uncomfortable. When we finally continued towards the entrance, they backed off. After visiting other museums near, I strongly felt, the organization of "Mandela House" did not meet up to its "world-class..." online description. The lady selling tickets was nonchalant when informing us about the tour/ v self-guided. It was not as clean as there was trash blowing around out in the entrance and throughout. People was surrounding the place and hanging around. It seemed as if organizerd cluttered the building with artifacts (bet it would be on better shape in CT, or Jonzi) and I felt sensory over-load trying to take it all in in such a small space. As an artist and traveler who has been to various heritage museums and places of interest, I just feel as if the layout seemed like after thought. I don't know if it demonstrates the truest and fullest respect in his honor.

This house was NOT THE ORIGINAL as they claim the original was burned down twice & rebuilt. You gave to drive THROUGH ALL KINDS OF ppl jumping in front of the car & trying to pass us flyers or get us to buy stuff. There are a few street performers along the way so HAVE MONEY ON HAND TO GIVE TO THEM. The house is SUPER SMALL & definitely was BUILT STRICTLY FOR TOURISTS in a community that could DESPERATELY USE THE HOUSE FOR ACTUAL HOUSING. All the pictures in the house are FOUND ON THE INTERNET so NOTHING NEW THERE. It was interesting to see all THE AMERICAN ACCOLADES from COLLEGE TO COMMUNITIES there are MANY WHO WROTE RECOMMENDATIONS FOR MANDELA yet not much for him from S Africa itself. Winnie his wife got quite a few ACCOLADES from S Africa AFTER MANDELA DIED but HE NEVER GOT HIS FLOWERS ALIVE so this "Museum" is not for him it's to STEAL PRIME REAL ESTATE IN A VERY UNDERSERVED AREA.
Visiting here is like walking in the footsteps of a great man and through his life. To say the least it is a humbling experience. The house is small but cosy. The renovations have certainly helped to restore the place and gives one a glimpse of the Mandela family life. The coal stove and bedroom are true replicas. The volunteers who guide you through the tour shed a lot of light on the history and events associated with the home and family. It is inspiring to think that he came from such a simple background but went on to do such amazing things. Note there are MANY groups performing traditional dances on the street outside. It’s fun to watch however they do expect a tip for their performance. This can be overwhelming on the wallet.

We had a bad experience with people hanging around outside posing as tour guides. We took an Uber there as we were told not to go to Soweto alone. When we walked up a random person opened the gate. We stepped inside and to our right was a ticket counter. There was nothing to see but a small house and we decided not to buy a ticket to see it. The place was empty On walking out the man and a couple of others started to shout that we had to pay because we walked into the gate! We refused. So they started screaming security. We told them to call the police not just security as we hadn't done anything. They then backed off. They were trying to hustle us for money. Very bad experience of a historical place we spent to go all the way to see.

We had an historic experience there. If you’re visiting the place, it’s best to have a guide who would be explaining the ins and outs of the house. Especially some of the memorabilia inside the house, our guide explained the belt he got from Sugar Ray Leonard, the letter in the cupboard, the setup of the house, the fire bombing of the house, the graves on the house, the umbilical cords of the children. I’d recommend this for any traveller, especially for those who didn’t get to experience Mandela. You get to be up close and personal and feel like you knew Mandela. It’s relatively affordable, we went during the Youth Day (16 June) and the fee was R40.

I was so disappointed that I went to pay my respects to Mandela at his place and we had to come across people that just did not allow us to enjoy. Two pushy and annoying guys will try to be your guides. It will be difficult to get them off your shoulders once you pay attention to them. One even made a threatening comment on my way to the rideshare. There are also great people, the store owner right in front of Mandela's house helped us to get a ride back to the hotel. The place is surrounded by the ghetto so be aware that there will be people begging for money everywhere you go.

How basic a home for so great a treasure in the life of one of South Africa's most beloved sons. If only the walls could talk and tell us how his mind was developed by what he observed, learned, endured, and prevailed through. It would add commentary to what the world learned by watching his life unfold to become a hero of civil and racial justice that was crowned by his ultimate national and international leadership and prominence. I am humbled.

Our guide was a very knowledgeable college student/docent who shared a great deal about the history on the outside of the house. Once inside, we were left to roam through the small house on our own, which was actually perfect because it was a typical modest home. It is a glimpse into the past, personal life, and living space of the Mandela family. I appreciate that the family made it into a museum, and the state designated it as historic.

Great place to learn the history of Nelson Mandela in a relaxed way. A small cozy home filled with a lot of efucative memories, you can even visualise everything with the pictures that were taken way back. Very smart and well maintained. Friendly guides too. The street has nice restraurants and bars as well. Traditional dancers and so much entertainment. You will need cash with you to tip everyone. I loved the place.

I went to Mandela's residence. Nearby, there is a parking lot for cars. Some street vendors approach you to make a sale. With a guide, you can tour the home and discover more about Mandela's life. The number of vendors grows as you make your way back to the parking lot, and they sing a tune like "Welcome to Soweto" and unavoidably request a tip; it's best to offer them a small amount, like 50 rand.

A humbling experience visiting this great human being who guided our Awesome Country during times where Humility, Compassion were so desperately needed. We visited with really good friends from England and they loved the experience. Vilakazi Street has a great vibe and like no other Street in the World as it had 3 Nobel Winners on the same street. Well worth a visit, puts life into perspective of how much we need to be grateful for what we do have.
Interesting to see but definitely wouldn't say it is a must see. The entrance costs 60rand and the house itself is very small with much of the surrounding area full of touristic gifts and restaurants. If planning to visit, I would recommend that it isn't out of your way because the house itself was underwhelming for me.

Very small but worthwhile museum. Inexpensive entry fee. We opted for a tour guide for tip only. She was a tourism student at a university. It was well worth it as she really added to the museum with commentary and background. Be careful of the surrounding area if you decide to walk around.

When coming to Johannesburg I believe a visit to Mandela’s house is one of the first things to plan. The area is a bit touristy as both Mandela and Tutu, two noble prize winners and lead figures of modern South Africa lived in the same street in Soweto. The house is a classical ‘match box’ house full of souvenirs. The admission was 60ZAR. It is an interesting place to see.
I'm glad I decided to go on this tour of Mr. Mandela's home with his second wife Winnie. Just to see and hear all the traumatizing experiences they went through with their children was definitely heart breaking. This is a must go if you are ever in Soweto, South Africa.

We visited under our own steam. Very interesting museum and thoughtful explanations from a local guide within the museum. The whole area round the museum felt perfectly safe during day time. Hawkers outside the museum are friendly and do not persist. We walked the streets up to the Hector Pieterson memorial without any problems.
Interesting to see where Nelson Mandela lived several years of his life before spending much more later in prison. Quite busy the day we visited. A must-see if you visit Soweto. By the way, the surrounding area is a very lively one with lots of restaurants and cafes where you can safely mingle with the locals.
I went on a short visit to Soweto and stopped by Vilakazi street where we have the Mandela house. Unfortunately, we were unable to go into the house for a tour, and I guess it's due to the public holiday at the time of visit.

A walk into the home of one of the greatest men that lived. Hard to imagine that this 300 sq ft home was where Nelson Mandela lived(albeit, briefly). Modest entry fee of 60 rand for adults , a lively well informed guide. Overall , a 30 min walk into history.

It's a great privilege visiting the house of an ICON, MY MENTOR, MY HERO AND AN EXEMPLARY LEADER. Tears filled my eyes when I walked into his house in Soweto, there has been no African Leader till date who is qualified to wear the shoes of NELSON MANDELA. I LOVE YOU SIR
I am fortunate to be able to visit this place. A house where a very interesting, intelligent, long stuffing, but triumphant person live back in the beginning of his days here on earth.

It was a surprise. Too small space to a great man. But it is the history. Spotless, nice and welll organized. Employees or collaborators were useful and helpful. Souvenirs or merchandise should be more varied. Price is OK. A place to be visited and recommended.
Very moving experience. Essential for learning the history of recent South Africa. The area around is a bit touristy but authentic and brings money into a still deprived area.

We visited Mandela's House as part of a morning stop over in Soweto. The house itself is small but thought provoking. I would suggest visiting the area with a local or as part of an organised group so that you are able to safely enjoy all Soweto has to offer.
Everyone knows Mr. Nelson Mandela. Visitors to Mandela's house can explore the various rooms, including the living room, dining room, kitchen, and bedrooms. Mandela's house has become a symbol of hope and resilience, embodying the triumph over adversity.
This is a Great little piece of history to see. My very knowledgeable tour guide , that was found inside the museum, was awesome. You can See her on my last photo.

A truly surreal experience to stand in the place where an icon grew up. Nelson Mandela transcends celebrity status, the feeling when you are in the house is quite indescribable. Soweto is a great experience, I found everyone to be extremely friendly.
Definitely need to take a walk to feel the sensual atmosphere and see the history of our people. There's restaurants, bars, Kota places and beautiful views.

Very interesting experience, although Nelson Mandela didn’t lived in this house for long, the information from documentation to awards is well displayed. It is very positive that the price includes the guide but in the end you need to tip them.
Not a lot to see, per say. The building surrounding the house gives the impression that it's a lot to see. It's like any other shack in Soweto. Furniture and some personal items. There are no pictures allowed inside and no video on
Was excited to see Mandela's House in Soweto. Not much to see but worth the experience. Go check it out when in Soweto land.

Definitely worth the visit. The bullet holes in the house are the most jarring. Sitting in the backyard and listening to recordings of Winnie speaking about certain things was the best part of the experience for me.
Here is Mandela's house, which is located in Soweto. You can learn about the history of Nelson Mandela. It costs R50 per adult.

Fascinating history about apartheid and the role Nelson Mandela played, how he lived before, during and after prison with life and kids. Zulu dances on the street, good restaurants, and tourist crafts.
Wonderful experience! So much to digest and learn. Disappointed pictures are not allowed inside the museum however.

If you visit South Africa, this is a must. We had a great tour operator and she explained everything, took us through a short history of Mr Mandela and his wife Winnie.
The place was good but the reception was not a very good one. It felt like they were prioritizing visitors from outside the country, yet we drove all the from Durban
Spent an hour in the small yet rich in memories for Mandela and his family. Saw hundreds of world awards for him. A must visit house. We had an awesome tour guide.
It was really informative having to see all their belongings was extetic

Amazing place. So nostalgic. The book 491 days came alive. Was here with the amazing ALN Women 2023 cohort. In the photo is the phenomenal Martine ✨️ …
Have to see at least once. It’s very small but interesting to see. Probably will never go back again but important place to stop while in Soweto.
Lots of historical memories and artefacts which are well preserved here. Gives you a feel of being near the iconic Nelson Mandela and his family.
Amazing tour inside Mandela house the stuff is friendly and the guides are very informative
