The McMillan Memorial Library is a public library located on Banda Street in downtown Nairobi, Kenya. It is the oldest library in Nairobi, and the second oldest in the country after the Seif bin Salim Library in the coastal city of Mombasa. The architecture is a neo-classical design featuring granite-clad columns along the façade and a grand white marble trapezoidal stairway leading up to the portico. There are two lion statues guarding either side of the entrance. The external walls are constructed of smooth rendered stone under a flat roof and the internal walls are clad in polished timber panels. The windows are glazed in tall steel casements allowing for ample natural lighting and the doors are made of heavy hardwood panels hung in timber frames, pedimented to the lintels. The floors are finished in parquet to the main areas with terrazzo to the entrance way. This library holds more than 400,000 books including East African newspapers and periodicals dating back to 1901. It also boasts a collection of Parliamentary proceedings since inception to date.[2] The McMillan Memorial Library ActEdit The McMillan Memorial Library is the only building in Kenya protected by a specific Act of Parliament, the McMillan Memorial Library Act Cap 217 of 1938 which provided that the library was for the exclusive use of Europeans in addition to the usual conditions for preservation of monuments. The library was bequeathed to the Nairobi City Council and was opened to the general public in 1962. Macmillan Library Along banda Street Nairobi, Next to Jamia Mosque is one of the oldest building and Library in Nairobi and second oldest in Kenya. Last week I visited the library and was curious if by any chance the place is accessibility ♿ friendly, since it's a public library. Wasn't surprised because I know it's the oldest and maybe there's no much awareness campaign of accessible facilities. Inshaa Allah post perndemic and lockdown will visit again and try to inquire how we can embrace the awareness and support accessibility facilities campaign in future. Because as a community it's our duty and efforts to make this campaign successful . Nevertheless it's a nice place to have your studies without being disrupted.

The McMillan Memorial Library is situated on Banda Street and is surrounded by Jamia Mosque on two sides. The main reading area is on the ground floor with the Mabel Rushton Children’s Library. On the upper floor is the Africana section and a conference hall while the basement contains the newspapers and periodicals section. The Library operates from Monday through to Saturday. City residents, mostly students from universities and colleges, frequented the facility to do research.

Exquisite location in town. Very quiet yet located in the Nairobi CBD perfect for studies and meditation. Annual membership registration 1000 Ksh only. More good news on the way. It's currently being renovated and upgraded. Likewise to the Kaloleni branch and Eastlands library. This is the best place for bookworms and quiet brooders in this noisy Nairobi.

Great walls! You can hardly tell you are in town. No disturbances from hooting vehicles. Central location with adequate space. Very ancient and so are the books. Has that old book smell and museum vibes. Affordable access rates (Kshs.1000/= p.a ) Could use a little facelifting here and there. Overall it is a good place to spend time at flipping through dusty books or your personal books.

Mc Millan Memorial Library provides a serene quiet environment for studying if you are ever in the Central Business District. It does require membership for which a fee is paid. Unfortunately it does not have the latest or updated book titles. It also does not have internet.

  • Koffi Kelvin

This uniquely constructed building is a library that thats really old maybe one of the oldest in kenyaand it has a huge collection of reading materials it has books paintings... Video tapes etc etc that cover all manner of subjects from science to religion even to history

  • Lynn Waweru

The building is old, in a good way. I liked it. The books are outdated. It's really quiet for a place in the CBD. They charge ksh1000 per year.

It is a good study place. The librarians are perfect but the luggage desk has very rude and not `working ladies`. they just tell you to leave the bag there and collect by yourself. you have to keep an eye for someone not take your pack... that bizarre

  • Jackson Macharia

This library is located next to the Jamia Mosque and the ICEA building, it has a calm environment for reading but does not have internet. There is no membership fees here making it accessible for anyone who wants to study. #letsguide #Library

Beautiful piece of Architecture that holds rich Kenyan history. The interiors are slowly deteroriating due to lack of maintainance by the County Government. …

Honestly, Not good.. the fastest I've ever left a Library. I hate saying this Coz I Love Books, Libraries. But, man. Macmillan Can do better.

  • suzan marie

Something is not right there... Look like it may shut down.... It gets worse every day.... And it's urgently needs renovation

  • Eugene Nijssen

The library is closed for renovations and it does not look like they have plans to start reconstruction in the near future

  • Boniface Mugwe

Awesome place to study, for only one thousand for one year subscription.. A rufurbishment would do the place a big lift.

  • The Moran (#Its_Moran)

The books are great and the place is calm. You wouldn’t even notice it’s in the middle of the city.
