Deceptive and deceitful. Short story: after paying $296 I have a bike where the one item I explicitly told them to fix is still broken as their attitude clearly is: why fix what what the customer requested when you can charge for other things instead. For the long version, read on... Long story: I took my commuter bike in to Mission Hills Bike Shop as the bottom bracket had clearly cracked (for context I bought it new for $600). I explicitly told them that a cracked bottom bracket was the problem. After looking over my bike they recommended a complete overhaul as they said there was a plethora of other issues with my bike. They gave me a flat fee of $284 to overhaul and fix my bike. They explicitly would not itemize the components they were going to replace even though I asked multiple times for it. After thinking it over I agreed to pay the money as my bike had been riding very slow recently and their prior $75 tune-up I had them do six months ago had failed to fix the this. The day before I'm to pick my bike up they call me to let me know that I have a cracked bottom bracket and it is going to cost additional if I want them to fix that. On the phone they adamantly state that they never agreed to fix my bottom bracket even though that is the explicit issue I brought the bike in to have fixed. They say look at your itemized receipt as there is no mention of fixing the bottom bracket. Confused, I'm very rudely told by them that the claim ticket they gave me has an itemized list of what they agreed to fix on it and the bottom bracket is not on it. In a nutshell they told me one thing, but intentionally wrote down another thing without telling me so they could keep adding additional charges. When I told them I explicitly brought the bike in to have the bottom bracket replaced, multiple employees stated over and over that it wasn't on the itemized list such that it became clear that this was a standard business practice for Mission Hills Bike Shop. I even talked to the guy who gave me the original quote and he wouldn't admit that I brought the bike in to have the bottom bracket fixed as it wasn’t on the itemized list. I suspect that they train their employees to say one thing but write down something else so they can double charge you to get the original item fixed. In short, after paying $296 (they forgot to add sales tax in the first time) I have a bike that is still not rideable. More than slightly irritated by this, I called around to other bike shops in town and it became clear that the prices Mission Hills Bike Shop charged me were around 25% higher than other shops. If you want to stop by and talk about bikes with people who obviously are very passionate about cycling, yeah I can see this being a great place to go. If you want to have your bike serviced by honest professionals, then I strongly suggest looking elsewhere as both honesty and professionalism are in short supply at Mission Hills Bike Shop.
A year ago, 2016, I went here for some minor work and was. impressed with the gentleman who helped me. So I went back this year to have a front wheel replaced after it was stolen. Last year's fella wasn't there and oh what a difference that made. Wheel had to be ordered and I was told my bike would be ready in 2-3 days at the latest. Cost would be $70 and they would call me when ready. By the 5th day and No call, I called them. I was told that the wheel had not arrived yet. I was previously told the wheel was ordered on Monday when I took the bike in. Turns out that was wrong and the wheel wasn't ordered until days later. Finally, 9 days after dropping the bike off, I got a call that it was ready. When I arrived, the charge was $88, not $70, and I noticed the new tire was a Much thinner than the original one and did Nit match the rear tire. When I questioned that, I was told that tire was what they had in stock, but he would order another if I wanted. What, and wait another 9 days for it. No thanks. Question: why wasn't the same tire, if not in stock, ordered when the wheel was ordered? Who knows??? I expressed my total disappointment with the whole situation, paid my bill and left. A totally frustrating, expensive, and time consuming experience. If they treat all of their customers this way, I don't know how they stay in business. Maybe I am the only one with this experience, but it's certain that I will never deal with them again. There are many bike shops in SD to choose from. Unfortunately, I chose the wrong one. I
All the other times I went here, the mechanics were very friendly and helpful. Unfortunately, one day I asked another mechanic there for some help with some grinding somewhere in my crankset. I just wanted to change the crankset, but he insisted on also changing the bracket and front derailleur (In his defense, the derailleur was campi, and the crank would be Shimano, but I knew I could make it work since it was only two speeds and I had done it before). He became very rude and stand-offish, cutting me off and being very disrespectful. He said I was only allowed to ask two more questions, I tried asking him what the price would be, and he just told me it would be parts and labour without even giving me a numerical value, which was not useful to me. Seeing that he didn't even have the patience to talk to me or address any of my concerns and just made me stressed and upset, I realized that I wouldn't feel good about leaving my bike in his hands. I went to another bike shop. They actually took some time to check my problem and found the teeth on the front chain rings were worn out, and explained that to me without being condescending. I got a new crankset (I didn't even need a new bracket as the last mechanic insisted), and they installed it. Bike works great now, as simple as that.
I had been going to this shop for years as I bought a bike there and the staff has really been exceptionally helpful. When you buy a bike here they give free tune ups and charge for replacement parts. The parts are over priced, but I was willing to look the other way since I was saving $20 every few months on basic tune ups. I had the misfortune of running into the owner and he is nothing like his staff. He was obnoxious, stand offish, dogmatic and insulted me several times within a few minutes of meeting him. I try to give every one the benefit of the doubt and put up with the abuse for a while as I wanted do some serious upgrades to my bike because I have had it for a few years and thought it would be better to work with what I had. They had a few customers so I let him deal with them and give me a chance to regain my composure and try to work with him. After another few rounds of abuse I decided to walk away with my bike without my free tuneup. I can afford to spend a little more to be treated with respect and descent customer service. Up to this point when I bought parts they would put them on for free, but he modified the policy so only the base tune up is free which almost any local shop will give you anyways.
The team there is always friendly, however they can be very disorganized at times. For example: Late last month, my bike was giving me troubles so I brought it in as I've done several times before and the mechanic ID'd the problem quickly, but he would have to order the part. He stated they would call me on Monday with an update. Monday comes and goes. No phone call. So I drop by a second time, the guy there can't find any info in their files so we go through the whole deal again and was once again I was told someone would contact me Monday. No phone call again. I just dropped by this morning to ask the status of everything and no one had any information from the previous two times i dropped by, despite the fact they took down my information and wrote next to my contact info the part needed. They are worth trying if you need something quick done (assuming they don't have to order the part). I, however, am going to see if I can find a different bike shop that actually calls you back when promised.
"Just calling to confirm that you're closed tomorrow." (as I expected to get a REPLY, speaking only in the context whether I be correct or not. As that was the reason for my phonecall. As this be the day before Thanksgiving day; the day before the heavy holiday shopping begins. As once Thanksgiving begin, MHBS is locked into the timeline of this business frenzy before Christmas.) "So." As that was the only reply that the male employee of Mission Hills Bicycle Shop gave. I had looked on i'net websites of MHBS business hours, for any changes/modifications to the(ir) business hours. Before my phonecall. As no changes had been made/shown. Another reason for my phonecall. NO REASON IN WHY I SHALL HAVE GOTTEN THE REPLY THAT I RECEIVED. I could have been cut off the phoneline in a more offensive way, than I had been -- but I assume that I was signaled to been lucked out.
Worst experience I’ve had at any business. I was told to bring my bicycle in so they can measure which seat post would be the accurate one because my seat was stolen. They didn’t tell me anything about leaving the bicycle here. I returned two days later with my bike and I was informed that they need to keep my bicycle here for at least 24 hours to “sanitize it.” I have some news for this business, their shop is empty, fitting the correct post takes 5 minutes and the contact time for most sanitizing wipes is 5 minuets. I have some on me in fact. I’m very disappointed that you couldn’t accommodate a healthcare worker who relied no this bike to get to work.
Many thanks to Eryn at Mission Hills Bicycle Shop for taking my bike in after I got a flat tire on the 5th Avenue Bikeway yesterday. I didn't even notice the flat until I was about two blocks away from the store. I searched for the nearest bike shop and was lucky to arrive just before he closed for the day. The flat was fixed by the next day. He's clearly got plenty of work to keep him busy, so I especially appreciate the help he gave me as a walk-in customer. I won't hesitate to return in the future.
Took a week to get a replacement part in for a stock standard bike.... really obnoxious gentleman (person is more applicable) works there when I was there telling me “he was helping out the owner” did not know where anytime was, no attempted to look around .. said “things not my real job” finally got my bike back 8 days after I dropped it in... I have had good service here in the past and very poor service too ... sadly, the poor service now outways the better ... time to go elsewhere!
It's been a while since I looked MHB on Google maps, the reviews seem to have soured. It surprises me, I'm a local and have lived here 16 years and ride regularly. I usually do my own basic work but for more technical stuff that requires professional and guaranteed work I go to them. I've ALWAYS had a great experience with them and I am not a "friend" or "buddy" outside of their business though I have run into the owner a few times at a local bar.
Terrible experience speaking with a staff member here at this bike store. It’s almost like he was trying to argue with me for no reason which made me confused and rather frustrated. Strange that an employee or owner would want to treat someone like that. I was hoping to find a local spot I could take my bike but this won’t be it. Will never return and recommend you go somewhere else if you’re considering it. Try Uptown Cycles instead.
I was met with a very unexpected unfriendly employee from this store. I walked in and politely asked a red bearded individual if he could help me figure out a few items for rust on a bike I recently purchased. His response was "I've never dealt with that kinda thing "... His demeanor was rude and negative. Guess this will be the one place in Hillcrest I refuse to ever visit and spend $ at. =(
I hate leaving bad reviews for local places but man .. the dude who owns or runs this place is the most short tempered, irritable, demeaning person i’ve ever met. i left feeling super insulted and talked down to. i don’t know if he hates women or just hates his life but i will avoid this place at all costs .. plenty of other super kind and friendly bike shops out there.
Great, local bike shop! Owner answered all my questions and helped get my bike going how I requested, I even had a last minute change and he was accommodating and patient! I like to support local businesses in my area and I’m grateful to have a trusty bike shop in the neighborhood with cool bikes, accessories and sock guy socks!
Second time I get there at 9am there opening time and they are not there. Second time waiting over a half an hour for them to still not be there. Change your opening time if you can't be punctual!! I frequently buy things for my bike and was looking for a shop close by to go to consistently....never going here again.
I have been going to mission hills bike shop for years to service my ride... a wheelchair. The gentlemen there have changed tires, wheels and aired them up whenever I do a drive by before my wheelchair tennis matches. They have always been thoughtful, quick and efficient. Hope they are there for years to come!!!
Souled out bike shop with good people who ride and care about the sport and community . Be cool, be patient, and bring in a six pack for a tip these dudes and dudets work hard. Cant go wrong, this place is a go to for sure. Highly recommended. Thanks for always taking good care of me and my whip!
I just bought some new brakes and the guy wouldn't let me use an Allen wrench to put them on, and he wanted to charge me 8 dollars for 5 minutes of work I could do myself in a flash. So I have brakes but I cant ride my bike home because he wouldn't let me put them on and doesn't accept refunds.
I called to get a price for a simple part installation, when I showed up with a nice bike a few days later, the price went from $24 to $85 (on a handwritten receipt by the way). The pimple faced kid had no idea I called earlier. Go to an old school bike shop. Leave these hipster losers alone.
All the bicycle shops around the area are kind&helpful. However Eryn there sold me the idea of cycling instead of the parts and bicycles. Bought and installed pedals, tubes, tires, grips, brakes, cables, fenders, locks, bells. I plan to buy my next bicycle there too. Thank you so much Eryn.
What a gem of a bike shop! Saved my butt when I went to change my brake pads and found a stripped screw, they conquered the slippery beast and swapped out the pads! Friendly, welcoming, and playing radio noir murder mysteries in the background! New favorite bike shop in San Diego!
Always a good experience here. Bought my bike 15 years ago from this shop and they honored their promise for free tune up and it runs like a champ now. Very pleased with the new road tires they sold me as well. Friendly and courteous, the staff do a great job. Highly recommended.
You ever been to a shop where everyone is too busy but there is no one in the shop? Well that is the exact opposite of this AWESOME shop. So helpful and friendly! Whatever the culture is there it should be bottled and sold to other companies. Great job Mission Hills Bike Shop!
Shopped here for some parts while on vacation. Parking was tough, not normally a problem, but I needed a patch kit and air for a flat and couldn't get here without a car. Limited selection, even for a small store. Still got me what I needed with Friendly service though.
Fantastic guys and gals. Knowledgable, friendly, and communicative. Replaced a tube that went flat within a week of being installed and fixed my odometer without me even asking, all for free. Will go to them for all my bicycle need and inquiries.
Great place to come moms who have strollers who’s tires keep going flat. No worries here. Gentleman will put a inner tube that will never go flat again. Worry free walking and jogging. I wish other bike shops would of mentioned this before.
Such an awesome bike shop! I came in to switch out some pedals and they noticed a completely unrelated safety issue with the bike and fixed it free of charge! Come here for a thorough team who is really looking out for their customers!
Went to the store to look for a new bike, the guy opens the door and says what do you want? I reply looking for a new bike, he said rudely we only have what’s in the window and closes door. Rude from the moment he opened his mouth.
I was in town for a long weekend and had a flat, plus my 20 year old bike pump was inoperable. The gentleman running the shop helped me out and was very friendly. I bought a replacement pump and was back on the road in no time.
If you like fixies or you want to add some personality to your bike. This is the best store. The have a loooot of fun and cutes accesories for your bike. Lights, colored rims, cool seats, etc... I just love it!
2/16/19 Rear wheel was rubbing. Owner Aaron said "also new cables blah blah blah would cost me $140!" Took to another bike shop, "simple true $10." Last time I will go to Mission Hills Bike Shop!
Great shop, 5 stars for being legit for over 2 decades. Limited selection on some items, but even paying more at times is totally worth their amazing service. Great part to the neighborhood.
Took my bike in for repairs and a tune-up and was impressed by their attention to detail and willingness to explain the issues to me. Definitely going back next time I need their services
Only bike shop in town that would get my rim trued and spokes replaced in the same day. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable when it came to my needs. I will definitely be back!
This bike shop is awesome I pass by everyday on my way to work from city heights to point loma, every time I need something done on my bike these guys take care of it …
Fixed my shifter on my tandem at a very reasonable price and did a few other minor tune-ups at no charge. Great attitude and ambiance. Support your local shops! Check this place out.
Bike riding hipsters who like to judge you if all you want is an inner tube for your schwinn. Expensive maintenance considering the long turnaround. Avoid if you can help it.
Wonderful customer service, a great array of bells, and they were able to fix my flat tire very quickly! Super knowledgeable and helpful, best bike shop in San Diego!
Only the owner or a relative to the owner could be this rude. That said, the minor maintenence job that was asked of them was done competently.
Very good service and was helpful in my needs. They care about the customers and give suggestions for questions. I highly recommend this shop.
Staff is willing to go above and beyond to meet their customers' needs. Knowledgable and friendly - they're the Real Deal.
Eryn is WONDERFUL. He does excellent work and doesn't charge what he should. Great customer service. Highly recommended.
The owner is rude. Doesn't like competitors. Prices are high compared to other shops around. Shop elsewhere
Staff has wasted my time with each visit. They charge for air? At least they are local and open in a crunch
This guy is amazing. Always superior service at affordable rates. I won't ever take my bike anywhere else.
Next level customer service. Eric was super helpful and accommodating. Couldn’t recommend enough!
80 year fixture in the community. These folks are great. Thanks for fixing my ride.
Love this place, its like a second home! The mechanics here are THE BEST!!!
