2 stars because it's black owned. Growing up in Detroit and living in ATL since 2010 I visited today Sunday August 27 2023, with HIGH expectations, to treat myself for my birthday and won't be returning. I came here for "Soul Food". No one's soul was in this food, unless they were deceased. The yams were like eating potatoes, cinnamon and butter. The ox tails were dry and cooked in chicken gravy. I ordered extra pieces of smothered chicken (which was ok) white and dark meat, and I got a small thigh and the the drum of the wing with some extra breast meat. The catfish sandwich I ordered was HEAVILY seasoned didn't taste like catfish and looked and tasted eerily similar to tilapia. Mac and cheese looked good but didn't translate, it was flavorless. Cabbage and red beans and rice..... Cool the cornbread was completely dry and lacked flavor far from what I expected from somewhere like here. People aren't happy about the "SOUL FOOD" Scene in Arizona and this is another example, in my opinion, as to why that is. WHERE IS THE REAL SOUL FOOD?!!!!!!!! Maybe it was the off day for the head chef? For fifty five plus dollars PLUS tips, this was just unacceptable. UNACCEPTABLE. And you should be ashamed to call yourselves soul food. I don't even eat canned food at home. A complete WASTE of money and time!! Everything is still in the box, minus a couple spoonfuls, so if you're hungry give me a call.

We were visiting Phoenix and was informed this establishment was the best. First we arrive and we’re greeted with a smile. We took our seats and waited for approximately 15 minutes until the server asked for our drink order. We informed him 3 lemonades. He then left and returned to the table across from our table and took their drink order. He left and returned with their drink orders. We waited another 10 minutes until I became tired of waiting and asked about our drink order. He stated he hadn’t forgot about them and returned with our drinks that he said were unlimited refills which I must say that didn’t occur. After about 63 minutes I became irritated by everyone else eating and we were still sitting so I went to the front desk to inform our server that I would pay for our drinks and leave. He informed me they had run out of flour and the chicken was currently cooking and it would be 4 minutes and we would have our food. The food came out and the chicken on 2 of the 3 meals was missing a piece of chicken. The server told us he was going to bring the 2 shorted pieces. Now to the food. The chicken had no seasoning, the macaroni and cheese had no flavor and the yams tasted like they came straight from the can. The macaroni and cheese at Chik Fil A tastes much better. Don’t forget we ordered cornbread and peach cobbler that never came. I try to support my black owned businesses but this was a terrible experience. Definitely would not recommend if your hungry and I will not be returning to this business.

We arrived at 1:31. We immediately were seated and waited about 30 minutes for our order to be taken and another 45 minutes for our food to be brought to us. For a total of one hour and 15 minutes that we waited to eat. We were missing two pieces of chicken, one piece per person. We weren’t brought the cornbread that we ordered, and we didnt even bother asking about the dessert that we ordered. We were told it took so long because they ran out of flour. Yeah, ya know, a place that serves fried chicken...They ran out of flour! We were comped the drinks ($4 each) after my brother-in-law said he'd just pay for the drinks and we'd go. They told him the flour story and said it'd be 4 more mins. We had invested so much time at this point we just stayed. When the food finally did come it was just ok. The fried chicken tasted like fried chicken. Wasn't better or worse than any other fried chicken we'd ever had. The greens tasted like greens, the sweet potato tasted like a sweet potatoes, and the macaroni and cheese tasted like mac & cheese. My recommendation would be to find somewhere else, especially if you're really hungry going in. Also the place has way too many tables for the space so you feel really cramped when seated and are constantly getting bumped into.

If you are looking for food on the table in 5 minutes and rushing you out the door when you're done, this is not the place for you. Mrs. White's is like visiting your Grandma's house. Food isn't started until you come over and it's served hot and fresh. The food is exactly what you would expect from Grandma's. Good southern comfort food (soul food) that fills you up physically and emotionally. Good food takes time to cook and it takes time to enjoy. If you are going here, plan at least 90 minutes if you truly want to enjoy your meal and grab some of the amazing cobbler with ice cream. Have a favorite, like fried okra, that's not on the menu? Don't be afraid to ask. Sometimes they are out of certain food, but it is all so good, it doesn't matter. Hubby lives for chicken fried steak, but had to go with the smothered pork chop instead. He never would have eaten it if they had chicken fried steak, so he is glad they were out. Mrs. White's Golden Rule Cafe is a wonderful dining experience with amazing food and a relaxed atmosphere. Just be prepared to slow down and enjoy your time there. BTW, the chicken comes with 3 pieces, but my third piece was still in the fryer.

If I could give it more stars, I absolutely would! You open the door and immediately know, it's about to go down! The place is small, but the food and service is outstanding. Brian did it all on the front of the house. He was a positive charismatic person. My BFF and I had questions and he answered all of them. He knows people by name! Loved the hospitality! We ended up getting the vegetable plate with a protein. This is the best way to get a sample of allllll their hot sides. Let me tell you... The sides, the sides, the sides. FOR THOSE THAT DON'T EAT PORK OR MEAT-the sides are not cooked with any of that. The sides are full or flavor and I could've easily been satisfied from it alone. You know how sometimes restaurants use the same seasonings for all their food? Not here! Each side had its own flavor. Sooooooooooo good! I had the fried chicken and it was so crispy and juicy! I ate allllll that food. And the sweet tea did not disappoint! This restaurant is a must! Professional athletes stop by because they already know the deal... You're the one missing out!

I got the fried chicken entrée with green beans w/potatoe and mac and cheese. Sad to say that the 2 side dishes I had were better than my main entrée. The star was the green beans, very flavorful and best I've ever had. Mac n cheese was homemade and tasted like mac n cheese so kinda hard to make that dish stand out but was good overall. Chicken was a little salty and flavor was okay. I paid $23 for food that was just okay. Not worth the price so it was way over priced. Gus's fried chicken is better and way cheaper. Price along with the chicken is what's stopping me from giving it 5 stars. Might come back one day to try something else but price wise, definitely not a place that you can afford to eat at often especially if some of the food is hit and miss.

Want to give a great big shout-out to Brian Junior.... This young man was incredibly courteous and attentive to detail. As always the food was phenomenal I always get the smothered pork extra smothered.... Green beans and potatoes and the rice and gravy. And as always they knocked it out of the park. I really do need to go to mrs. White's more. Oh and I got the chocolate chocolate bundt cake OMG it is so good. Mrs. White's is one of the few places that can cook home cooking like Grandma did.

I will start with the bad, the potato salad is horrible, I've had better from the store. It taste like soupy macaroni salad, don't order it trust me. The peach cobbler didn't have enough cobbler lol just peaches and syrup. Also for this establishment to be around as long as they have you would think they would've made some upgrades or invested into the interior. The seats sit low and are cracked, the whole inside needs a deep cleaning, new coat of paint, tables, and chairs. Please update your establishment there is no reason for it to look like 1976 in a bad way not a good way Now for the good we ordered fried smothered chicken, rice and gravy, yams, black eye peas and green beans they were all good.

If you like southern cooking, then avoid this joint. The fried chicken sandwich was a leg and a wing on a slice of white bread. The chicken was so salty and I expected the food to be hot or at least warm, since I had to wait 15 minutes for my to go order. It didn't appear to be freshly made to order. The macaroni salad tasted like store bought and the cornbread was hard and cold. The place has been around for a long time but it looks like Mrs White doesn't work there anymore. Her granddaughter is the cook. I was so disappointed with this place and don't plan on returning and maybe others have had the same experience because the place was deserted.

This one hurts. I have wanted to visit this landmark restaurant for a while, I was disappointed. Service really needs work. The chicken, fish are delicious. The sides need work. 3pcs of chicken and sides for $25 is ok 1 PCs of fish and side Not ok Our cornbread came with our dessert it was not warm and too hard. Honestly, it's overrated and overpriced for the service and food. I would love to work with this business to help make better.

The fried chicken is simply incredible, possibly outdone only by the smothered pork chops which were among the most delicious thing I've ever eaten! The chicken fried steak was also good but nowhere near the rest. Sides are fresh and just about everything is a good choice but the sweet potatoes were addictively awesome. Servers were very attentive and friendly. I did get a weird feeling when paying after getting absolutely no response to signing the credit card slip and leaving a 20% tip. The gentleman who seemed initially full of smiles very obviously examined the tip line then set down the slip and gave us no further acknowledgement as we turned away and left. It just felt weird and was an unfortunate closing experience.

Bought lunch for a coworker who is from South Carolina and said he hadn’t found a good soul food spot in Phoenix yet. My ears perked up and I said, “Oh buddy! Do I have a treat for you!” He got fried chicken, red beans and rice, cornbread, collard greens and peach cobbler. He was in heaven and his review? “Ooooooh wee! Best soul I’ve tasted in AZ!”

We dined in and was pleasantly surprised by the good food and customer service we received. The decor is a bit run down and need some repairs otherwise enjoyed this gem we stumbled upon. It was our first time and we ordered the fried chicken, collard greens and Mac and cheese. My meal was smothered chicken with rice and potatoe salad which both dished was yummy. I didn't enjoy the cornbread tho. Overall I recommend going.

I discovered Mrs. White's Golden Rule Cafe while in town for a conference. A coworker spotted it while exploring, and after reading Mrs. White's story on their website, we we're very excited to go for dinner, even after reading the mixed reviews. We had a great experience. The service was terrific and the food was great. The building is old and run down, but isn't that what makes a place qualify as a hole in the wall? It has its charms and what it lacks in atmosphere it far makes up for in people and soul food. Give this place a chance!

People were friendly when they weren’t conversing amongst themselves. Me and my friend ordered the fried chicken dinner with Mac and cheese, which appeared to day old, I had green beans, they were fine and my friend order cole slaw. The only thing good was the chicken. I informed them the Mac and cheese wasn’t good. No response and no compensation! Prices were to high for the food you got. Also the women’s bathroom didn’t have running water to wash your hands. My one and only time I’ll be going there!

This family run restaurant doesn't look like it's changed much since they opened in the 60's. Luckily, the food hasn't either. The southern fried chicken is old school with a delicious but subtle flavor. It is lightly breaded and seasoned and perfectly crispy. It is on multiple best of lists for a reason. The cabbage is slightly sweet, not overcooked. The black eyes peas cooked to perfection and the flavor is allowed to speak for itself. Call ahead if you're in a hurry, it is paced like a southern drawl, but that's ok because perfection takes time.

This place RULES! The food is so good, even 13 years after I left Arizona, this is the ONE restaurant I miss deep down in mah belly and will make sure to go to whenever I visit Phoenix. The chicken fried steak and the pork chops are the best -- smothered, of course. And if they've got peach cobbler, you owe it to yourself to have some!

It a quaint diner like atmosphere with Family rules. Help each other. Be thankful. Know you are loved. Pay with hugs and kisses. Try new things. Be Happy. Show compassion. Be grateful. Dream Big. Respect one another. Laugh Out Loud! First visit. Only because I never heard of this place and it has been right under my nose for years. Looks like tagging the walls with a signature is the thing to do. So, I’m happy to know I have a Sharpie in my pocket Ordered the Smothered Pork chop with green beans, collard greens and a sweet tea. Oh, how I love me some soul food! Y’all This is OmG Good!

Fantastic southern comfort food. We had the fried chicken, mac and cheese, sweet potatoes, and cabbage. It was all incredibly flavorful and perfectly cooked. All service was prompt and the food came out much faster than I expected. The staff were very friendly, my picky eaters ate well, it was a perfect dinner. Ok, I've read the other reviews and 1 of our 4 skipped because of them. Well he missed out!! All u eastsiders, stay there!! This place has "soul" in there soul food! By far the best catfish, fried chicken, and pork chops. But the chicken fried steak was BOMB!! UNTOUCHABLE! Brian told us a story of Mrs White at 97 yrs old got up recently put her shades on and drive herself to San Diego. I'm a first timer and this will be a regular stop for me! Talk to them ask them for a story or 2. They've been here only 58 years! Brian thank you for a celebratory dinner that we had tonight!

  • BBQ Bill

Brian was friendly, sharp, and accurate with my order. The Chicken Fried Steak rates at the top for me. Great crust, delicious brown gravy, and the beef was tender. I had the greens, and they were good, even without added meat. (I like smoked pork or a smoked turkey leg in there) I am not a cornbread fan, so to me, it was okay. Thanks, Brian!

Mrs White's Golden Rule Cafe is A Phoenix institution since the 1960s! This family owned eatery serves homestyle and southern comfort food. The restaurant is cozy but you quickly realize why they’ve been around for a long time. And this place has many fans from celebrities to locals to tourists! Many people have commented about the wait time but it wasn’t bad. When i first arrived the place was full of people on the lunch hour rush but we received our food in a timely manner. Staff was extremely friendly! Come try this place for some awesome soul food!

Food was good af. Serves Kool aid. A small building is the only downside. Don't know if there are bigger locations. The food made up for the size of the building. Got the smothered pork chops and they were delicious. Highly recommend to anybody, but especially for my people that likes soul food.

I went in a good mood for some soul food. I felt liked I was looked down on and didn't belong because I wasn't Black. The waiter was not at all friendly even though I tried to be. I felt unwelcome. The food, for the price was like a meal from a gas station and my friend and I have no reason or desire to go back. Phoenix has many other restaurant choices and extremely friendly folks. I was born in the Midwest. These folks do not have that Midwest friendly feeling. Very disappointed

Food was delicious and our service was awesome this young gentleman by the name of Brian (sp?). I had smothered pork chops (gravy on the side), greens, cabbage, cornbread and sweet tea. My hubby had fried chicken, blackeye peas, greens, cornbread and sweet tea. All was served hot and delicious. However, we thought it is a little pricey. Experience is real at Mrs. White’s Golden Rule Cafe. Located right off Washington Street with a parking lot in the back. I tried finding the location a few times before it’s way to Mis. Love the food options menu is straight forward and offers a home style feel. Customers have made their mark and the wall and the community has supported the restaurant for so long. I’m glad I’ve got to enjoy.

Great sides. Awesome sides. Did I mention the sides? Hearty greens. Delicious yams and cabbage. Definitely try the cabbage. The chicken is juicy and the secret fry batter recipe is fantastic. No frills here just great food and friendly service. Don't be scared off by the appearance of the building. It's what's on the inside that counts.

Food was delicious! Two of us had Fried Catfish and two had Fried Chicken with different sides. The green beans were seasoned perfectly! Rice and gravy was delicious as was the sweet potatoes. Food served in styrofoam containers guarantees clean services.

this food was soooo I started eating my catfish before i could even make it home. this the type of food you sit down and eat in that restaurant. you don't let this get cold. the catfish was perfectly seasoned. cornbread nice and sweet. beans were delicious and the sweet potatoes added balance to the saltiness. …

I love Mrs. White's. The owner's grand kids are like family to me. I eat there to remind me of home back in South Carolina. Great ppl loving atmosphere. The only place to get soul food in AZ besides my friend Larry Lo Lo's.

This place lives up to being featured on TV (many definitely don't) Had the chicken fried steak with green beans and coleslaw, drank Kool aid. Was able to try the fried pork chop too (would probably order that next time) Will definitely be back if I can!

SOOOOOOOOOOOOO GOOD! Was thinking how much I missed the food from the time I spent doing miltary duty in the south and this HIT THE SPOT! I legitimately almost cried tears of joy right there at the table. They were out of mac n cheese when I went but that's okay because I'll definitely be going back soon

My husband & I had lunch here & split the fried chicken with rice & gravy, beans & cole slaw. WOW is all I can say. The food was absolutely delicious. We both got lemonade which was fantastic. We will definitely return the next time we visit Phoenix!

We will definitely be back again! Went for our first time before a baseball game. Only issue was having to wait for some of our food. But they were busy so we understood. It was worth it! Everything was absolutely delicious and home-cooked for sure!

Very nice portion sizes everything was hot when I got it and seasoned very well only complaint is the cornbread was more 'cakey' than what I am accustomed to but I would definitely visit again and desert was also tasty

First time visiting Mrs White's Cafe. The smothered pork chops were good and the black eyed peas were also great. Mac-Cheese was on point. However, my mother had Collard greens that she didn't eat. She said they were very very salty but the fried fish was good.

  • leslie gatlin

It was okay, a staple in downtown PHX. My mom was visiting and wanted to try this place and the food came out fast and was hot but it was kinda bland almost like not a lot seasoning but it still filled me up. Prices were fair compared to most soul food places.

Exactly what I’m looking for when I want a meat and three (well two) plate. The catfish was amazing, hot and crispy, and I loved that the mixed greens had turnips, collards, and kale. Service was great too!

I had the fried chicken, yams and greens. The seasoning of the food was just right especially the yams with its sweetness which hit the spot. Cornbread was a bit dry but overall the food was good.

Was hoping i'd love this place. Very small amount of chicken for the price.. Got a leg and a half breast for $13++.. Cornbread arrived after my meal was done and had no flavor. Chicken was middle of the road and the black eyed peas were very salty.

  • Cass Lages

Walked in and I could tell the food was gonna be amazing. Sweet tea was perfection. Fried chicken was perfect and crunchy. Potato salad was cold and delicious MAC AND CHEESE WAS MAC AND CHEESIN’. 10/10 will be back must try the pork chops next!!

  • Dianne Treesh

Stopped in here for dinner tonight and am so glad we did! Just happened to be in the area and thought the building looked cool. When you walk inside it's almost like walking back in time. The wait for food was a bit long, but I wasn't in a

This place has been here since the 60's. The food is awesome. So good I didn't wanna stop eating. I'm in a food coma!!! Southern food delight!!! There's some good articles from over the years on the walls. I'd love to have her recipes!!!!!!

We chose this restaurant due to its proximity to the Science Center and good reviews. 5 adults and one minor in our party we had high expectations. We all ordered Sweet Tea and one Kool-Aid. The tea genuinely tasted like mold. Like it was

For a 5 star review it is important to know why I go here. It's not for the service, that is for sure. What the staff may lack in fine dining training they make up for with honesty, humor, and the BEST soul food that you can find in this

  • Alejandra Villanueva

Place is a rip. Wanted to love it but really overpriced...the frried chicken tasted like oil needed to be changed out, could taste the catfish they fry up. Getting rung up and ready to pay. got overcharged on an already overpriced meal.

The food and service is great. It has a great history and could be so much better if it were taken care of. It needs a makeover.

The food was okay, but the restaurant could use a good cleaning.FYI don't use the restroom. The bathroom doors do not lock, toilet papers all over the floor ,toilet was not flushed.

Best Tamales I have ever had. They actually had some meat in them. Lots of red chili meat. Very good.

The food was delicious! It came out nice and hot. Every bite was nostalgic and made me feel like I was eating my grandma's cooking. Best Soul Food place in Phoenix!

  • Isaac M

We definitely enjoyed the chicken!!!! The restaurant has a downtown eclectic, small family feel. The service was also excellent and we loved the blue hair Rose!!!

  • Micheon Gorman

Food was awesome! Perfectly cooked and you get a lot for the price. Location had decent parking and the staff was great. Bring a marker to write on the walls!

  • Andre Lewis

One piece of fish for a meal at $25.00? Ridiculous. Not a lot of soul is put into this soul food. I won't be returning More
