Ham house is a bit fiddly to get too if your not a confident driver in what we're busy and winding streets on the outskirts if west London. The property itself is looked after by the national trust and sits near the Thames not far from Twickenham/Teddington. Because of being near the river , the parking can get a bit flooded and some pathways can be muddy or impassable. As for the house, it really is superb. The majority of the furniture is original to the house and at least 350 years old. There are some stunning paintings by the likes of van dyke, Lely, Reynolds, kneeler, wissing to name but a few. Besides painting there are some wonderful tapestries, and the long gallery and the miniatures room are superb. As for outside the gardens were spectacular even on a drab day in march. Staff and volunteers were knowledgeable and friendly. There are the usual facilities on site (cafe, shop, 2nd hand bookshop, toilets) . Well worth a visit and a joy to see a place almost as a time capsule. Recommended

This unique stanning 17 century House is must to visit for sure! It is a loving creation of William Murray and his daughter Elizabeth, the Duchess of Lauderdale. As a child, William Murray was educated with King Charles I and aas his 'whispering boy'. They remained friends friends into adulthood. In 1626 the Ham House and its estate was given as a gift to William from the King. The House later on was passed to William's daughter, Elizabeth, who along with her second husband, the Duke of Lauderdale, made significant changes, which are still present today. The previous owners spent 400 years (!) gathering treasures from around the world and gathered there an amazing collection of paintings, luxurious furniture and textiles. Last entry to the house is 3:30 pm. There are also the garden, book shop, gift shop, cafe and toilet facilities on the site. Car park ( free of charge) is 2-3 minutes walk. After visiting the house and the gardens, you can indulge yourselves to great promenade along the river Thames too!

Highly recommend! £13 entrance fee for no National trust members. Although, Google maps says opens at 10, it opens at 12 (at least on Saturday). It’s closed for restoration from Sep 26th, 2022. Beautiful 17th century house with many art works and extraordinary staircase. There are 3 floors open for visitors: Ground floor with Duchess’s bathroom, kitchen and Ale cellar First floor with bedroom and mail hall Second floor with art gallery and library Don’t hesitate to ask questions about the furniture or paintings. Very interesting history of the items. There is lovely second hand book shop with £2 per book of donation And nice souvenirs shop Cafe with cakes and tea is also there. Gardens are not much of a view, maybe in the summer with all the roses is better. Anyway there is plenty of things to see

We visited in February on a last minute decision and we were not disappointed. Free parking near it which is brilliant. The grounds the house is set on are beautiful, although they are quite small so doesn’t take too long to walk around. You are able to walk around the basement of the house which has lots of interesting stories and a banquet set up with different foods they used to eat which was an eye opener. When you go into the main entrance of the house, we were greeted by a lovely lady who’s knowledge of the house was outstanding and set the scene for what to look out for in each room we entered upstairs. The house is very beautiful and grand from both outside and in. Definitely something to visit and learn the history about ham house. Also the cafe on site does the most amazing cream tea which you can’t miss out on !!

Wow! Such a DISAPPOINTMENT! Took my little one to see Father Christmas - the worst £15 ever spent. It was so disappointing. We were so looking forward to it, imagining how beautifully the house will be decorated. It wasn’t mentioned ANYWHERE that you meet Father Christmas in a shed, not the main house. It was also NOT mentioned anywhere that the house opens at 12. Everywhere online it said 10 am. Had I known this, I would have not come at all. So basically the visit with Santa was nothing to wow you; and then the house was not open. We popped to the café in the hopes of waiting there till it opens but it was freezing; overcrowded and the staff were absolutely dreadful. Waited 30 min to get two cups of coffee. Save your money.

Was nice but not what we expected! We found the car parking wich is near the Ham House but was unorganised and full of dust, mud when is raining I suppose(the car parking is not part of Ham House). We walk a bit,get in there, payd £28 for two adults but because on the next day they've been filming most of the furniture was mouved and wasn't so excited like expected. Other down thing for us was that we saw so many little noisy children distracting us for enjoying the history !! We had as well a nice cake and a coffee there ,enjoying the beautiful gardens !! This is my personal experience in the day of visiting Ham House, you may have a different exciting experience !!

I will never get tired of saying that this place is an amazing spot. All the staff members are just a dream. Everyone here are so so kind and knowledgeable is something out of this world. The food you get at the cafe is just amazing. Ham house is an amazing place to Come with kids, friends, your employer or even by your self. Amazing amazing place. The staff at the shop are amazing too, they are so so helpful. This place is amazing and the curious thing is the volunteers elderly people here are so full of knowledge and so extremely kind, it’s a joy to see people working here because they want to. Honestly I am extremely grateful to come here nearly every single day. From the entrance to the garden the staff are amazing amazing amazing

The house is beautifully preserved and a marvel to look at. The staff are very knowledgeable and helpful as you look around and the many plaques in each room give you a massive amount of insight into the history and tales. It's a shame they have removed the back garden maze bushes and kept it as an area for kids to play, however it seems like a nice place to bring children and there are lots of activities like colouring in, games and sports outside and even going around the fruit and vegetable patches. All in all another lovely national trust to visit with a lot of history.

This place is utterly beautiful and with a rich history behind it. The main building has too many rooms decorated with paitings and tapestries. Also, you can find kitchen and other rooms related to servents. There are a couple of beautiful gardens surrounding the building. You can find a national trust shop, second hand book shop and toilets near the building. Café is located in a separate garden. You can find home grown vegetables and also flowers there. Parking is outside the building and not far from it. Also it's free but a bit bumpy. It's a great place to visit.

Excellent National Trust house set in attractive grounds. Inside there's a lot to see, with impressive architecture, an imposing staircase, and extensive collections of historic furniture and paintings, including a notable display of miniatures. Even the basement and kitchen area are accessible. Outside there's a kitchen garden, ornamental garden, café and second hand bookshop. In March, there was a striking purple crocus display at the back of the house. There's nearby free on-street parking. The nearest rail station is Richmond, about a 30 minute walk away.

On the banks of river Thames in Ham South of Richmond (Richmond upon Thames) is this 17th-century house. The gardens and the house is a prime example of the life of the aristocracy... there are some interesting quirks though - like the appearance of slaves in paintings , along with the mistress of the house (not a done thing in those days ). The fake marbles that adorned the front door etc... the grounds a littered with games and activities- great fun for the kids and the young at heart. The Caffè is really great .The cakes are recommended

WARNING: This property is full of portraits of monarchs from the house of Stuart who were complicit in, and key to establishing the transatlantic slave trade. There is a lack of context displayed here to Charles II / James II and the Royal African Company etc. On the other hand, Ham House has some classic portraits by Van Dyke, great architecture wonderful gardens and a lovely cafe with some yummy (if overpriced) soup. Perhaps the most interesting feature is the plumbing and the extraordinary antique bath/ shower in the servants' quarters.

This house is a little gem in Richmond right by the River Thames. It is a beautiful attraction with a 17th century house and stunning gardens. It also has a café and shop. We will be returning to spend more time in the gardens. The cherry orchard is outstanding in its design. So much to see here at there are guides to help at strategic points in the house. Travel to Richmond then 371 bus to Ham Street. It's about a 5 minute walk from the bus stop. Worth spending a day there. Lots of people walking their dogs and riding horses.

Lovely setting on the banks of the River Thames in Richmond. Well maintained National Trust property and environs. Take a look at the orangery with lovely climbing roses, the ice house, where the owners used to store ice throughout the year - commonly used prior to the invention of the refrigerator(ice from ice house was most often used for the storage of perishable foods and for cooling the drinks or making cold desserts.) Not far away are the dairy and still house (yes, a distillery!) After viewing the house, there's also a nice Riverside walk all the way to Richmond Bridge.

  • T Hartberg

This is a nice combined house and garden, in typical National Trust style. The house it not the most decorated, and there are relatively little furnishing compared to some similar houses. But there are some wonderful paintings. My favourite is the large canvas depicting the Battle of Lepanto, by the main stairway. The garden is large, and again, without too many 'furnisher' features. Bot overall, this is a lovely place to spend a couple of hours. And the location just by the River Thames suggests that the visit should be combined with a nice walk along the riverbank.

  • cat p

You wouldn't believe this beautiful NT building is in SW London. It's serene & plenty of room to roam. Free parking but not onsite, lovely riverside location. Gardens are beautiful & so is the orangery cafe. There's a little ferry that crosses to the other side where you can go & visit another property called Marble Hill - this is lovely & free to enter and look around, if not part of NT. If the weather's good, either place is amazing for a picnic to wile away the day!.

The nearest station is Richmond, which is a pleasant 20-30 minute walk along the river. Be careful not to walk too far though, as there are no signs telling you when to leave the riverside path. The gardens are lovely to walk around, especially on a pleasant summer day. Not quite enough to occupy you for a whole day, but worth spending the morning or afternoon there. At the entrance, check for details about the free garden tours.

Beautiful house, one of the best houses on the National Trust list! Quite a big house, with opportunities to see the basement and the second floor. There also might be a line to enter the house with the amount of visitors it has. Currently, it has scaffolding so you won't be able to see the architecture as much, but would love to visit again to see the house in it's entirity! The garden is great too, and had a nice walk across the grounds. Parking is quite a while away, but free parking.

Beautiful period property and gardens. Free parking a short walk down the road. Good knowledge from the guides some stunning murals. Orangery cafe was well staffed good selection of food fritatta was very scrummy. Nice hot day so sat outside to eat pleasant location. Games such as Boule and croquet for the kids. Recommend it. Dog friendly outside on a lead. There is a dog run near the car park where they can run free.

Loved it so much, easy to get to from central London. Definitely worth it if you love history, especially the restoration era. Beautiful shop, I also bought some vegetables from the garden, such a nice atmosphere. The only think I didn’t like was that they don’t let prams in (although I can understand why) so if you have sleeping babies, you can’t go in at all. Staff were a bit odd in my opinion but 100% recommended

Lovely, if typical, National Trust property near Richmond, Surrey. Historic house and pretty grounds make it a worthwhile visit. However, it is poorly signposted and not too easy to find if you're not familiar with the area. Also, most of the approach roads are limited to 20mph which makes it irksome. Nice cafeteria for refreshments. Parking seems to be on street at the entrance and appears somewhat limited. Blue badge holders can drive right up to the house and park there in specially designed spots.

  • Travelmad999

Spent 4-5 hours at Ham House today. What a lovely 17th-century house set on the banks of the river Thames. We arrived by Uber (£7—£9) from Richmond tube station and walked back to Richmond (40mins). Stunning gardens set out as the original gardens would of looked. The house was also stunning and tick around 40 minutes to walk around. Great cafe serving hot and cold food and beverages, it was very busy! Parking nearby

What a gorgeous house. Many very knowledgeable and patient volunteers are available. They are so kind with the two children I was with who had so many questions on the craziest things. The house is filled with some amazing treasures and artworks. Our favourite rooms were the Chapel and Green Rooms. Lots of history snippets are dotted around, which are not overwhelming but informative. The gardens are fabulous.

Ham house in all its glory- what a fantastic place to visit. Being transported back to the 1600’s. A true breathtaking experience and the grounds are well kept and stunning. Lovely cafe although just picked up a coffee this time. Kids mud kitchen to play in. Sneaked a few raspberry’s from the garden as there was an abundance. (Shame to waste) ;) Free parking on outer side of road. Also Thames walk just a stone throws away. Pubs nearby by for a roast after. (Sunday’s)

The Hampton Court Palace and grounds are amazing. So much to see and learn about. All the guides are very helpful and obviously love volunteering and working there. Parking in the grounds is £1.60 per hour, we parked at Hampton Green car park, about 500m away. £1.50 ph. Take plenty of change as the pay by app system did not work. Allow several hours to see everything in the Palace.

Despite it being a grey day, this place was beautiful. Manageable sized rooms (unlike Hampton Court) with amazing colours. The kitchens also visitable and interesting. On the day we arrived I hadn't noticed (although had I paid attention to the NT site I would have noticed!) that the interior only open from 12, so we had to wait a bit (but there is a warm cafeteria!). The crocus beds are amazing. The staff very friendly and knowledgeable. Great (1/2) day out!

Stunning 17th cent. masterpiece by the River Thames. The house is so full of history, it's incredible. The volunteers are so kind and helpful. They do a great job in bringing the place to life. Outside is just as impressive. Beautifully kept gardens with original designs. Popular cafe with wonderful outside seating. Food could be much more imaginative - a fantastic vegetable garden is in full view. Gift/plant shop. Mobility scooters. National Trust Member.

A beautiful house & garden in Richmond. Friendly volunteers with ample social distancing. We went in the house only on the ground floor as the other levels are closed to the public. We visited in October for the first time and would love to visit again in spring & summer time. Café by the orangery is lovey treat after walking around the gardens. We ended up the visit to the souvenir shop and carried on walking along River Thames back to the centre of town.

  • Aidan Marsh

We enjoyed our walk around the house. Beautiful house and garden. There are facilities such as cafe, gift shop, book shop and toilet facility. The back of the house is currently under renovation but the surroundings and the house itself are very well maintained. Staff are friendly and knowledgable. Would recommend people to have a walk around this area.

Was super duper lucky came here on a beautiful day in winter. Transportation is 10-15 mins car drive from Kingston station. Kingston town is quite lovely to visit as well after Ham House tour. The house was somehow under construction but didn’t kill its beauty. Garden was top notch, you can easily wander around for 1-2 hours. An afternoon would be good enough to see everything.

Lovely house tour and gardens. I especially loved the formal box garden and surrounding hedge borders. The cafe patio was very pleasant, warm and sunny. Did not buy tickets in advance, although parking was the only limiting factor as the main lot is rather small. If arriving with kids of accessibility needs I’d suggest coming during slow hours.

I visit Ham House regularly and it is always such a pleasure. The garden is beautiful and the cafe is a lovely place to rest for a while. The house is not big, the interiors are kind of interesting but quite dated. A lunch in the café was a shocking experience - about 5-6 staff members were all in kitchen at at one point, leaving half a dozen customers waiting; the staff were very amateur; the food was badly prepared and very overpriced given what it was.

Pleasant enough, but classic National Trust. As in a previous 'shell' of a structure filled with things that aren't original. The long gallery filled with prints of paintings that 'appear' to be original but most certainly aren't. Classic National Trust. We wouldn't mind at all if they said so. But they never do.

It’s beautiful and interesting. Only reason for 3 stars is because facilities aren’t great. There’s a very busy cafe and no other food options. Limited seating space, so best to plan for an open picnic in a spot at the gardens. If you’re going with young children I’d suggest to take provisions with you.

I have been in many National Trust houses, and this is among my favourite ones. All staff was so pleasant and welcoming. In spite of having some sections only, you could view rooms that are not always open to the public such as bathrooms and service staff rooms. The garden are magnificent and it is the perfect place for a day out.

Very enjoyable and scenic national trust property in the heart of London. Bit irritating the house only opens at midday, as if you arrive at 10 you'll be waiting around (gardens only take 45 mins to walk around). Nice place to visit, it’s a shame is not part of English Heritage as the price is a bit too high for the amount of things to see.

Loved this house, so much interesting history. I especially loved the kitchen and bath areas on the lower level. I would have loved to see the servants quarters on the top level but that's closed to the public.

Nice wander around Ham House on the Thames. Built in 1610 the Ham House Estate was gifted to William Murray, a courtier to King Charles I, in 1626. A beautiful 17thC Stuart House. Certainly worth the visit.

Classic National Trust House and Gardens, always fantastic to see a window back into history. The gardens are the highlight here with the woodland retreat and lavender garden forming the different areas.

Lovely to see how people lived and to enjoy the garden. Great to see unobtrusive games to entertain the kids. Just note garden opened at 10 but house not until 12.

Great venue. Helpful staff. Good cafe and shop. Lovely grounds and house. I knocked off a star as access for wheelchairs could be better and the gravel paths are hard work for wheelchairs.

  • Deborah Sharpe-Thurgood

Loved this beautiful house and gardens. Had a super tour of the gardens with a guide. She was well informed and interesting. I would greatly recommend this venue for the perfect day out.

What an interesting place, full of history! I’m lucky to meet the resident felines, Lord Roscoe, as well! The garden is very well maintained. Some beautiful flowers in blossoms! …

The gardens are beautiful and a wonderful place to spend a sunny afternoon. The Orangery tea room offers a delicious Victoria sponge and a very tasty home made sausage roll!

Great location, a grand house and lots to keep you busy. We parked in the free car park, walked up to Richmond Park, walked along the Thames Path back to the house.

Definitely recommend to come here, there’re so many activities for kids and huge place to run around. You can even cut the lavender yourself and bring back home ❤️

Overflow carparking by the river had lots of spaces, could probably do with some re-surfacing of the potholes.

A historical country house to visit near London with a lovely garden cafe overlooking the beautiful garden.
