Fantastic modern art. The exhibits were conceptual and many spoke to various social issues. The seventh floor outdoor space was fabulous as well. I really enjoyed the variety in terms of styles of art as well as various mediums. One of the highlights for me was the interactive walk through exhibit currently on the third floor. Be quick when going through it though - while it’s a cool place for selfies, each space is very small and you have to move through pretty quickly as it’s so popular. I say this because, unfortunately, the staff had to intervene and seemed annoyed at some of the hold ups caused by people stopping to take photos. The only downside to this museum in my opinion is the fact that it’s a bit disjointed in its layout - there is no clear way to move through the various spaces and it is easy to miss things. It is smaller than many other museums in Manhattan but that’s something I personally enjoyed. Overall, a cool experience.

Honestly, I'd skip this one if I had the choice again. There were a couple cool gory pieces, but not a ton of art and a lot of was just video exhibits or art that didn't make any sense. It took maybe 30 minutes to go through 4 floors. The skyroom was cool though and had a nice view of the city. It's $18 per person so unless there's something specific that you know you want to see, save your time. Also, my husband was carrying a backpack and I had a decent sized purse as we were in NYC on vacation and were spending all day taking the subway and buses to get around. Halfway through the museum, he was told he could have his backpack but it had to be carried in his hand and not on his back/shoulder?? Yet I was able to keep my purse on my shoulder. Such a bizarre thing.

I haven’t seen a good immersive exhibition here since pipiloti rist. I get social narrative of justice, gender, racism and so on and I applaud to more and more public programs shining light on these topics, BUT past exhibits and the current one is so boring- aesthetically and narratively. Sculptures have disgusting overthought shapes, the heart piñata has annoying sound making your presence on the floor nervewracking. And in the end you learn nothing, you just come out of the museum a bit more unstable than you were before. Disappointing, not interactive , not imaginative at all, an exhibition that exists to be an exhibition for the people who curated it.

this has by far been the worst museum i’ve ever been to. the staff was unlike any other, they were rude and reluctant to answer any questions regarding the art, its meaning, and the curatorial decisions made at large. it was extremely disappointing to be policed in such a way that made this experience, which was 60$ for 2 people, unbearable. I will never again step foot in this building, it has been two times i have been here and been treated this way and i’m sure others will agree. the new museum is horrible and undemocratic at its core; because of the price, rules, and treatment of their patrons. if i could give 0 stars, i without a doubt would. DO NOT GO.

To be honest, I love the museum very much, and for a very long time I was going to get specifically to this museum. The only inspiring place it's rooftop. Otherwise, all the exhibits and paintings that I saw made me deeply depressed, and I left after 10 minutes.I do not want to offend anyone and I think that creativity is wonderful. Ah, but I probably just didn't get it. The only thing that seemed to me that the people who created it and have some kind of mental disorder. I would not advise anyone to visit this place if you have a healthy mind.

Great exhibits that showed off the breadth of a contemporary artists work by dedicating an entire floor to them. I felt like I was really experiencing these unique worldviews from within rather than as a passive observer. I didn't do any research before going and saw the final weekend of one exhibit but it seems to rotate exhibits every few months so it must be worth visiting often. There was also a poetry event with nuyorican poets society that I sat in on. It was time well spent! Definitely go

Went there earlier today, it was a very interesting visit. The whole building (which itself looks stunning from the outside) was basically a giant Hans Haacke exposition, and worth every penny. Speaking of which, while the entrance fee isn't particularly cheap (this is NYC, after all), it's less expensive than most NYC museums), with the caveat that, even though the building itself isn't small, the space dedicated to the art pieces felt smaller than other NYC modern art museums. Try to come on a Saturday or Sunday, otherwise you won't be able to visit the observation deck on the 7th floor.

  • Jung Lee

Smaller museums can be a hit or miss depending on exhibits. The day I went to the New Museum, it was all misses. The entire building was pretty much filled with video installation art. It's a shame, because I do feel the building has enough space for the curators to fill it with mixture of exhibits that appeal to wider group of audience. The top floor has a nice view but the doors to outside were locked and the floor looked unfinished. At $18, it’s a steep price of admission, so be sure to check the website to see the exhibits appeal to you before stopping by.

Great museum. A gem for contemporary art. It's an open space with galleries and a roof deck. This is one of my favorite museums in the city. There is currently a Pepón Osorio show that is exquisite and profound. It's unnerving and relatable for any diasporic community living in an urban setting, but especially powerful for any Caribbean, Puerto Rican, Dominican living in NYC. The museum is not afraid to show art and artists that may seem controversial. 5/5 highly recommend. Also, walking distance from great food and easily accessible by public transportation.

  • Zayra M

I had a lovely time visiting the Judy Chicago exhibit. The range of works was stunning, as was the view from the top of the Museum. The staff were kind and helpful, and I felt truly immersed in the art. I was able to see all the museum had to offer and appreciate the works in a few hours. A great place to go for an spur of the moment trip, and if you enjoy contemporary art.

Perhaps the staff are very bored but if you get close to any pictures (and I’m not talking about being closing enough to touch- I mean close enough to read the plaques) I was aggressively told to move- not asked politely, but actually treated disrespectfully It unfortunately made my entire experience sad and disappointing The exhibition was glorious (Judy Chicago) but not worth being treated like a cockroach

This museum is technically seven floors but only a few are accessible to the public. Each floor is relatively small and you can see all of the exhibits in about two hours. I've been here twice now, each time with a different theme that takes up most of the space. The top floor doesn't have much art but there is an outdoor space that gives you a good view of the area.

This was a low-quality museum for the price paid. A handful of the docents were super sweet but the negative always weighs more and there were super judgmental docents that sadly I will not forget. While I am not an art expert of any kind, I visit museums from time to time when I travel. And this place was, overall, a joke. Lots of weird crap—some literally looked like trash. I mostly paid to see a collection of trash. The movie was cool though. Do better or make this place free!

  • Erik Johnson

I find the New Museum generally unfriendly, but its new show, “Grief and Grievance: Art and Mourning in America,” fills every floor of the small, vertical building with an emotional, challenging, and timely exhibition. See it. Don’t miss Arthur Jafa’s amazing video installation, “Love Is the Message, The Message Is Death,” on the ground floor. Rashid Jobnson’s “Antigone’s Organ” on the top floor is also a highlight. Book advance tickets. The cafe is currently closed.

  • Margaret Li

I'm a big art fan but the New Museum was well above my head. I can usually appreciate modern art, but this was something else. Definitely some interesting exhibits and something you can enjoy if you can understand it. Fortunately I got free tickets with my Chase Private Client Culture Card, but I probably would not have paid for tickets had I known what the art inside would be like. If you do go, make sure you visit the top floor for a nice view of the city skyline.

  • Aarushi G

Cool building, beautiful view of the city from top floor, masks required but provided if you forget, very nice for pictures but the best part of the museum was that the exhibits and artwork had detailed descriptions! It provided background on the artist and context for the artwork which helped my understanding of the exhibits. Well curated

Very recommended museum. The building is impressive for its shape (and view from the balconies at the 7th floor). Staff is super friendly and helpful. The exhibitions are very different from other places. There are in-depth expositions of two American, non-mainstream artists that fit very well with the current wave of diverse and inclusive art. It really supplements the museum offer in NYC. Something that will make you think. (Also nice: no entrance fee :) )

  • James Pogorzelski

If you want to pay $18 per person to see a view worse than the one for free at the Bowery hotel, a 15ft tall carpet, and some videos of people dancing, then this is the place for you. Think this is probably the worst museum in NYC, 0/10 do not recommend. (The photo is from the stairwell which might as well be the best exhibit there).

Visiting the New Museum was AMAZING! This contemporary art haven in Manhattan impressed me not only with its stunning architecture but also with its commitment to showcasing emerging artists. The Sky Room on the 7th floor offers breathtaking views of the city which is perfect for pictures with cityscapes in the background. Love love love! Definitely worth the visit.

Unique experience. Not my cup of tea as museums go, but the highlight was actually the GIANT lime green elevator and the rooftop terrace with 360° views of the area. Current installations are quite bizarre and more cultural documentarys IMHO. I like going to museums with beautiful paintings and sculptures, but to each their own.

Just saw the Wangechi Mutu show before it closed and was truly inspired by the class of contemporary art available at New Museum. As an educator, artist, and student, I love the work they do. Same when I saw the Nari Ward show, the faith Ringgold show, or any of their triennials! Such great place to view art of zeitgeist!

Unique place, the art that is being presented has a nice modern feel. However the use of the space within the building disappointed me. There is a lot of open space and the potential for more art pieces or exhibitions is there yet isn’t used. Both photos shown are closeups of different exhibitions that where held.
