A bit of a hidden gem! Parts currently under renovation. You get some annoying and inconsiderate families and runners blazing down the narrow path or having their rugrats spread out and occupy the whole space, but other than that it has some nice wildlife, greenery and flowers growing that you won’t spot too often elsewhere, such as the hellebore flower. Fantastic on a sunny day and the water is very shallow so poses no real risk if you fall in.
The New River walkway is a welcome respite from the busyness of Essex Rd and Upper St that passes through Canonbury. There is a nice 10min walk that can be entered/exited via St Paul’s Rd or Pleasant Place/Halton Cross St near Essex Rd by Costa Coffee. Along the way is the newly refurbished Astey’s children’s playground and I’m there are plenty of birds and ducks along the way. Enchanting throughout the year.
Love this walk ! Beautiful trees and wonderful selection of wildlife. I'm so lucky to have this walk on my doorstep - a great escape from the city! Highly recommended to any tree, bird and nature lover... This walk can also continue through to Finsbury Park where you can pick up a parkland walk which takes you all the way to alexandra Palace and can include depending on route, Highgate woods Enjoy X
Gorgeous walk along a small stream inside beautiful nature. Surrounded by lush vegetation you can relax at a bench and watch the animals in and at the water e.g. ducks or birds. Here in this tiny little area you can almost forget that you are in the biggest city of Europe. Whenever I have to go on this direction, I'll take this relaxing walk, a really stunning narrow little park.
One of my favourite walks in London. A peaceful and a quiet place that his well hidden away from all the noise that one might expect to hear in a big city. There are some parts to this walk. This short path is the most beautiful from it all. It will not take long to walk it all, so bring a picnic basket and enjoy a sunny British day.
I love the River Walk, but despite a sign at the entrances to it, requesting people to wear face masks no-one does. The paths are quite narrow so that is why it is requested & necessary for the masks to be warn. Also there are runner spluttering out their breath without face masks so I will sadly be giving it a miss from now on.
I love this place it's one of my favourite places to take my Grandchildren over the years we used to walk through from Canonbury Road to St Paul's Road a nice nature walk so many memories they've grown up now but it was nice to take trip down memory lane I would love for my ashes to be scattered there when I finally go
Truly a place for relax and piece of mind in Islington. The whole trip through New River Walk will take up to 20 minutes but it has different landscapes, benches, three fountains (in summer) and many wild birds to feed and to investigate their life in natural conditions.
An amazing, small and quiet garden along the river. It is an artificial river, but it is so well maintained that it is currently filled with trees and wildlife. Waterbirds like green-headed ducks and cotes are very common here. Beautiful blossoms in the spring too.
I have lived for many years so close to this beautiful section of the New River walk without having found it. It is beautiful. So grateful to the town planners and all those who worked to establish this and all the othe lovely green areas in our cities.
Well worth reading the Wikipedia entry on this historic waterway before going. You get a peek at some lovely private gardens from houses that back onto the river. It's a very quiet and relaxing walk. At time you would never know you are in a busy city.
Lovely pathway with lots of vegetation and a small stream with a range of water birds and even a turtle. Although, this is a popular dog walkers path, it is still quiet and there is an adequate number of benches to just relax under the shade.
What a glorious London Walk! KingsX to Regents Park Canal thence east to the tunnel. Over the top thru delightful Cullpepper Park ( visit the physic garden if open! ). Thence cut through to Islington Green and begin the walk proper. Camden
Quite simply one of the loveliest short walks you can do in London. Great for dogs as there is so much to explore. The area is maintained exceptionally well.
Dog-friendliness
So much to smell and explore for our four legged friends.
What an accidental find in the middle of the city! It had rubbish as you would suspect being so accessible to neighbouring kids who couldn't care less. But I am sure it gets cleaned regularly. And still I loved every bit of it.
Finally reopened after some maintenance. Gorgeous path by the little river, surrounded by the beautiful trees and plants. Good for peaceful walks or relaxing book reading on one of the many comfortable benches.
Nice but a bit fragmentary. The new river goes all the way from near Hertford and is well signed but then disappears under concrete - reappearing for a few yards now and then. Feel more could be made of it....
Cute little walk along some greeneries next to the reservoirs. It's a great way to escape the busy city, you might even be able to spot some swans and other wildlife. It can get quite muddy in winter. …
I've been going to New River since I was a child, the river is an amazing walk with a wonderful playground. It has little fountains and a bridge to cross over part of the stream. Its definitely worth a visit.
A place where people come to smoke weed due to the proximity to the estate. Other than that it has some nice wildlife and it’s a great stroll with quiet and calm, except when a cyclist blazes through it.
How do you hide a treasure like this in the middle of Islington? Was there yesterday wandering through in the warmth and sunshine, lots of wildlife, nice and peaceful and the perfect place to chill out.
A very pleasant stroll through the heart of Canonbury by a small stream. It is so quiet and protected that the wading birds are happy to potter about and build their nests just feet away from the path.
This is the park of fairytales. Birds, fishes and small animals around. Very pretty but tiny so be careful if you visit with pets or children. The water is not dip however better keep little ones safe.
Delightful and historic River walk especially later afternoon when the sun sets- magical! Enter at Canonbury and walk to the Angel a short pleasant walk with 2 very good pubs en route for late lunch!
An oasis of peace and wilderness in the middle of Islington. Another example of unusual, hidden, historical quirky places which make London such a great City.
Me and my dog love this walk summer or winter.. if you live near here please have a walk through feed the ducks sit on a bench and enjoy the peace
Lovely place to try nd 'simply be' . Cant wait weight ! to get this housework / homework !! done .....Hope spring eternal . Havent even started !!
Who knew this lovely walk was in the heart of Islington..... Take the stress out of your head and stroll next to a stream in the city!
This Riverside walk is amazing, so tranquil and lot's of little birds and flowers to see, there is places to sit and take it all in
I Love walking here what a beautiful path. Really therapeutic and lots of benches to sit on and a kids playground to keep them busy
Another beautiful little tranquil escape from the city. If I'm headed in that direction, I always include it in my walking route!
I love this walk and take it when I need to clear my mind, soak up a peaceful environment and enjoy God's wonderful creation.
Nice and quiet walk. Not worth a trip exclusively to this area to visit it, but if you're in the area it's a nice walk.
Nice walk used to be part of the new River which supplied clean water from Hertfordshire all the way into Islington
About 10 minutes in length and nice surroundings, would recommend if you're bored of walking a basic little park.
A beautiful spot between running parallel to Essex Road near the Angel. You would never know you were in London.
Such a calm and green and lovely little park, on the South East side of Islington. Tiny, long. Cosy. Loved it!!
The wildlife living in the river is wonderful to see, and the park is well maintained with beautiful plants.
Beautiful escape from the concrete jungle but is left open at night and can be quite spooky walking past it.
Really nice walk, good way to get off the busy streets. Not for bikes, a narrow twisting walking path.
My partner loves the river walk. Although it's filled with rats (I've haven't seen them yet though).
Wonderful walk through Canonbury alongside the New River with lots of wildlife and plants to explore
Trekked this over three days. Major national trail through area of outstanding natural beauty
My favourite little strip of green space that runs from the heart of Islington to Hackney.
Great space and a bit wild. It makes walking towards Stoke Newington a lot more pleasant.
New River Walk is a peaceful little nature break in an otherwise chaotic and busy city
Lovely inner city retreat. Need to be a bit careful late evening, few undesirables.
Incredible place - unfortunately Islington tends to look after it only on occasion
My most fav work in any season .I love to do my Mindfulness - leaves in a stream
I had no idea this was on my doorstep. A nice little walk along the river.
Beautiful scenery, so peaceful , lovely walk to get your nature fix
Great tranquil walk from newington green down through Islington
Great walk and lots of places to pause and take in the scenery.
Lovely walk but the water could do with being cleaned up
Dogs, ducks, lovely plants. Excellent picnic spot
Lovely dog friendly walk with lots of wildlife.
Looks like a nice spot to chill for a bit
Great scenery and pleasure to walk
