I was visiting Mumbai for the first time & had no idea where to stay so I checked the internet & the first name that popped up within my price range was New Vasantashram. With hesitation I booked my stay on the phone itself not knowing what to expect & landed up at the hotel. The entrance to the lodge is like Batman's cave, you need to work real hard to find it & as you enter the dingy passage lined by hosiery shops, climb up the old creaky wooden staircase three or four flights no less your heart sinks in despair thinking you"ve made the wrong decision. But to your surprise you are greeted warmly by a very courteous staff/manager who assure you that your booking is indeed confirmed, quickly complete the formalities & show you to your room. Now in a city like Mumbai for the price I paid what waited me was exactly what I needed- clean room albeit a little small, a clean bed , a small desk , a chair, a fan over the head, a room light & a bed light. The next morning to my delight I found clean toilets & bathrooms unoccupied just the way I like it. My trip complete I left satisfied, happy that I was not tricked or duped. I had to go to Mumbai again & which better place to stay than efficient, accommodating, economic" Vasanthashram".The first time I didn't have time to notice any thing about the lodge, luckily this time I got to meet the owner of the place Ms. Sujata Rao - a warm, kind, caring, sophisticated, hospitable, charming lady- the embodiment of the perfect host who showed me around. Vasantashram is housed in an old rock-solid mammoth of a building centrally located, very convenient for all kinds of travelers with bus stops near the lodge & major railway stations within walking distance. The place itself is freshly painted, has dormitories, single as well as double rooms, the washrooms are clean-hygenic satisfactory with Indian seating, you can avail warm water, laundry services, tea etc for a reasonable price, there are eateries & hotels nearby. Vasanthashram was started in 1947 and still has that old world colonial charm thanks to the efforts of the proprietor -with ship-lights in each room as well as the corridors, artifacts & paintings strategically placed to give that yesteryear's look, a balcony overlooking the bustling Mumbai street below where you could enjoy reading a book or a cup of coffee or just muse over your thoughts. Crawford market & so many other places within walking distance are highlights of the city you cant miss The best part of Vasanthashram is its location,its colonial ambience, its economic pricing & overall the hospitality of the owner-Ms. Sujata Rao, manager-Mr. Jagannath & the entire staff. if your pockets aren't deep & you wish to take a stroll down colonial lane- Vasanthashram is just the place for you.

Guys don't go/stay here by mistakenly also. It's so pathetic. I had to reedit this review after I got replied from the owner that he's not taking the complaint about the cleanliness. If the owner thinks he serving since 1947, then he shall remind that now we are living in 21century not in 20BC. Come on & grownup your mind. It's good to know he feels proud on Indian culture, but on TOILET heard first time. I am an Indian I do feel proud to be an Indian but from where this point came in TOILET. Owner should know he's service provider & should accept what his guest felt during their stay in his dirty hotel. Instead of it, he's saying it's budget hotel & people are often coming, I tell you only those are staying who lives dirty themselves. There are many budget dormitories near by this hotel.This place is very very dirty, poor quality of rooms , extremely cheap quality of bathrooms, they don't have western toilet,full of mosquitoes, bad smell and unwindy rooms. I am traveling to Mumbai since 13 yrs, but this time I made my life's biggest mistake of staying in New vasantashram. So stay away from this place, better you stay at search on google (goStop Mumbai. ) This is good place to stay.

We had stayed at vasantashram for 3 nights and it was a wonderful experience. We really didn't think it would be that much clean. The rooms, common area, also the toilets and bathroom, everything is very well maintained and cleaned everyday. The old hotel atmosphere with agarbathhi fragrance in the reception, room interiors with that old hanger style on the wall, upscaled furniture, the doors with the old style lock near the hinges, everything was very nostalgic. We really liked the stay and we definitely plan to stay there the next time too.

Edited to 1 star: The owner does not know how to gracefully accept reviews. Pretty unhinged to claim I arrived with “dozens of luggages” when I highlighted that the room is smaller than expected (review on BookingDotCom). The rat was there at the reception. A few other reviews mention the same. I didn’t place it there. Ever heard of gaslighting? This is where one can experience it. Previous review with 2 stars: This place is okay only if you have no other options in the city. The entry to the hotel is filthy and shady, although the floor which the hotel on is passable. I saw a rat at the reception. They have only common Indian toilets which are extremely challenging if you are not accustomed to them. Also, no toilet paper allowed. There is no shower and no hot water at night. We took very cold bucket baths. The crowd at the hotel is a mix of international backpackers and local labourers. I do not recommend this place unless you are desperately looking for a place to crash in this unreasonably expensive city.

This place is really good for solo travelers. It's quite a hidden gem. You can't guess the building in the first glance. If you follow Google maps it's pretty good to find out. The entrance is hidden( inside the building) so you have to ask someone. The owner and staff are very polite. They will answer all the questions if you have any. They don't provide food. You can find a couple of eat out places outside. You can catch a taxi from the gate and go anywhere. Overall it's value for money.

Those are clean and simple. I have booked a room for 4 girls. There I got one bed with a clean bedsheet, blanket and pillow.

I stayed here for around a week. Its a fantastic place to spend a time. Hotel is 100 yrs old and the identity is still intact. Beautiful drawings and architect really give you a nostalgic experience. The staff is super amazing. Always smily and supportive. There is a lot of plenty space to work. Cold breeze passes like a peaceful journey in the room. Ambience is cool and gives a positive vibe. They have maintained the hygiene, hotel premise and toilet are always clean. 24/7 water and electricity. High speed wifi. All I can say is it is a beautiful package in a budget.

Price is very reasonable and staff is very good, situated on 3rd floor, there are dormitories, single and double rooms, common toilets(not Western toilets), geyser available, location is near Crawford market and 5 minutes walk to CSM Railway station (station code is cstm), best way to reach this hotel is through local train to cstm to avoid Mumbai traffic. Self kitchen cooking available, prices for room Rs 300 onwards to Rs1200 please cross check when booking. Checkout time 10Am, Room extend possible for full day price only. Main Road view with common balcony is very good, Building is old construction and rooms are very clean and free wifi available, only problem is ground floor entrance upto staircase is somewhat dirty and no lift and no Western toilets, Night time they will lock the main door, need to take their phone number and inform Room boy or owner about late nights entry to room.

Great location, right in the center of city. Need some upgrades as for example some hangers in the showers, definitely need a shower head - cmoon people, this is a hostel for everyone, and every person is not used to washing their bodies in buckets used by otrher people. Definitely need a regular cleaning in showers AND in toilets. Rooms and bedsheets felt clean, saw that everyday someone was sweeping the floors of the hostel. Administration and ovner ir super great and helpful. Will help you even in the middle of the night and give you the best advices. Overall good stay. Definitely need some improvements.

Pros: - it is a very simplistic hotel inside a very old building, - conveniently located in the city centre, - our private room was very basic but clean, - friendly staff, - free drinking water provided, - guests of the hostel were mostly young and quiet Indian nationals from other parts of the country, - the place felt very safe. Cons: - only squat (Asian) toilets, - very hard to find (located on the 3rd floor, entrance through a shop, no signs, we had to ask people on the street), - no proper showers – one has to use cold water from a bucket, - warm bucket of water sold for an extra fee, - weak Wifi coverage outside reception area, - very slow check-in process, - only cash accepted, - no breakfast available.

Comfortable stay, the owner is quite professional and helping. Location is convenient for travelling in Mumbai ( walking distance from CST ). The rooms are clean and well maintained, same goes for toilets and bathrooms. Only problem is that it's at 3rd-4th floors so if you are having luggage it becomes difficult to carry. ( Taking help from the staff will sort this problem ) . Also the entrance is somewhat hidden and through a shop making it difficult to locate. Can be managed by putting signboards or directions ( not a major problem ) I would highly recommend this place especially to youngsters, students as the stay is affordable and rooms clean. ***One suggestion - please have 1-2 western toilet seats as well. The biggest USP is that it is in South Bombay and close to most of the tourist places. The place gives nice Vintage Vibes. The staff were polite and helpful. The Manager helped me in getting a Mumbai Darshan tour at the last minute without any commission which was really nice. This was a comfortable and safe place for a female traveller like me. The place is antique yet in the midst of crowded Crawford Market. The host, Ms. Sujata is an amazing person who takes personal care that the guests are safe and comfortable. The staff is cooperative and humble and make you feel home. Clean and affordable rooms with all that I need just around the corner. Crawford market, Manish market, lohar chwl, paidhone is just walking distance. 11-15 mins taxi distance to CST station, Gate way of India and Marine drive. My experience was overall exciting. Nous sommes un groupe de 4 filles françaises venues passer 3 nuits dans un dortoir 6 places pour filles en janvier 2023. Accès à l'hôtel en mauvais état, douche au sceau, eau froide, toilettes turcs dans lesquels nous ne pouvons pas jeter de papier toilette et trous dans les murs de la chambre qui laissent passer de nombreuses souris. La propreté et l'hygiène sont à revoir. Lorsque nous avons signalé la présence des souris au personnel, rien n'a été mis en place. Nous nous sommes basées sur les nombreux commentaires positifs de cet établissement mais déconseillons. Seul le prix est attractif.

The place is beautiful and looks authentic. It's hard to find, hidden inside the corridor of a bookstore, but when you climb the three stories of stairs you'll find an enjoyable Mumbai establishment. It has a great view and a lot of room on it's balcony for yoga or meditation, but no smoking. The common room doesn't feel common enough, it would've been nice to have met people there. The dorms are gorgeous to look at but the beds are stiff. After walking around the city the beds are good enough. The isn't an accessible kitchen tho, which seems to be the norm in Indian hostels. The wifi is super weak, don't count on having it in the privacy of your room.

The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. We got food poisoning somewhere in Mumbai and they helped us get to a hospital, buy some groceries and basically with anything we needed while we were sick. Th rooms are a little tiny, but considering that you wouldn't normally stay in all day long, it's just fine. The bed sheets were a little dirty, but I guess that's just indian standard. Furthermore, there was no WiFi available in the rooms, only in the common room - which is a disadvantage, in my opionion. Also, it was super noisy, so prepare yourself.

You'll not find better accommodation in the entire city. The place is probably the cheapest with a prime location, great views from the room and easy to find travelers from all around the world. Water is provided 24X7. Breakfast is served on demand. The owner is the most humble person ever. I checked in at 4am and he was all polite about it and got me a bed. This is not the perfect place for a family to stay until you book your private room. No lift in the building. be ready to carry your luggage to the third floor. Thankyou for the best experience.

Excellent budget accommodation in a colorful part of Mumbai. Very friendly staff. A touch of old Bombay. A bit difficult to find. Take note of shops on either side. Entrance though a little underwear stall then up three flights of stairs. It's on the forth floor. Very clean. It is a shared building so way up is not all that tidy. Opposite Police Commissioners Compound. Most taxi drivers know this road. Near Crawford Market. With the money saved, you can eat at some excellent restaurants opposite Crawford Market.

Most recommended because of low price with heritage look accomodation. I spend here 1 night and book common room 400 rupees per person. They have clean washrooms and good for solo travelers, group and family. But it's on 3rd floor and no lift otherwise it's best old look ludge.

Good if you are staying for one or two days but no longer than that. They “close” at random times between 11 and 12 and you cannot get in after that (they don’t give you a key or anything like that). If you are a backpacker I would not recommend at all, but if you are passing through and can put up with the rules for a night or two, the location for the price cannot be beat. They seem very nice but it’s really lodging for people who need a cheap place to stay, not for travelers. Be warned.

It's a dormitory , unlike the posh hotels u see this is a vintage one ...I really liked the ambience here , that's may be I am a killer for old & vintage & history things ...they have both male & female dormitory rooms halls seperately..male -12 bedded , female - 4 bedded ..hygienic room , washroom is good , bathroom u have to share it with men (common bathroom) friendly host & can speak most of Indian languages , entry closes by 11 pm . It costed me 550 for a day ..i think it's safe ..

A ver, le doy 5 estrellas porque dentro de lo que cabe está limpio, está bien de precio y hacen todo lo posible porque te sientas atendido y a gusto. Pero, antes de venir tienes que saber que las duchas son a cubos de agua, no tienen alcachofa y los baños son con agujero en el suelo. El edificio es retro pero tiene su encanto. Strategic location for a guesthouse in Mumbai with easy access to market and Victoria train station (about 20 mins walk). This is a historical building and decoration is well made. Entrance is hard to find (a narrow corridor followed by 3 flights of stairs) but locals will help you. Comfort is basic and large dorms but it is spotlessly clean + one of the cheapest places in central Mumbai. staff is very welcoming

It is a very basic accomodation, but it is the cheapest you can find easily in the center of Mumbai. No AC, and WiFi is only in the manager office area, no real shower with water from above, but hot water for a bath can be ordered. Fans, Connectors and tables for mobile charging are close to most beds, you can buy bottled water there, and the toilets are clean, and the personell is friendly.

I love this place. If you like old school, basic, ashram like stays, New Vasanthashram is just the place. A lot of modern expectations may not be met: for instance, the entrance ground floor is rather dirty but the premises itself is super clean. There's a beautiful altar at the reception and the location is fantastic. Great value for money.

It's my first time staying in a lodge. The stairway to the place looked a bit scary especially at night. But the lodge itself is very safe, even for a solo female traveller. It's cheap and clean. The staff is also very helpful.

Reading the reviews, I was worried to stay here BUT this place was immaculately clean, safe (24 hour security) and architecturally stunning. Not to mention staff were lovely! I would highly recommend this place to foreigners. You get to love the cold showers (can pay extra for hot) and Indian toilets- I mean remember, you are in India!

I wouldn't recommend for women/girls, not a good experience. Female dormitory is next to common wash room, that smells alot. No actual privacy in the room, as it is a partition with other side converted into a single room seperated by wooden planks on the lower part and few wooden rods on the top part. Employees are nice though.

Room clean and hygienic. Bathrooms and toilet were clean too. But the toilet is Indian style, and with no flush. But it was fine. Basic amenities like soap, toothpaste, clothes washing soap are available to share. Laundry service comes at 8AM every morning and charges Rs. 30 for a shirt and trousers. Best value for money hotel.

I am so grateful for the management!!! I stayed there one night & I forgotten my small hand bag which had money in it. Then I remembered the next day. & when I asked they were keeping for me. Since it had no id or anything they couldn't even call & give it back so they kept it safe. Thank you!!! I was to happy about that!!

80 stairs are too much for me esp after meals and heavy breakfastno catering facility.hotel has separate wash room and toilet was indian style which caused lot of pain as my knees are not habituated.location is peaceful and quite near to CSTM.owner is also very decent.rates are very economical also.

I loved everything about this place! 10/10 would recommend! Pretty much what I expected. The staff was super nice, Extremely helpful. It's clean and in a good location. I could easily walk to main landmarks near by.. Nothing to complain about. I would certainly stay there again..

Cheap for the area. Thats the only reason to stay here. The place is in severe need of maintenance. The stair case upto the hotel is dirty and trash thrown next to the building.only shared toilets are present which are sometimes smelly. Plus they also charge for hot water.

A very cool place for staying at an unbelievable tariff. Extremely clean and homely ambience.. Only hitch is the Indian WC's and hot water in buckets ... no geysers. And no rooms with AC or attached toilets. Also no lift as the place is on the 3rd and 4th floors.

Room is clean and comfortable. Bathrooms and toilets were clean too. Place is situated just near CST station. Totally value for money. Although there's no AC and entrance is a bit complicated. Location of the hotel and its value for money.

this is not a hotel rather a lodge, the stairs leading to the lodge on 3rd floor is pathetic.two or four bed rooms are better compwred to the dorms.but the lodge also gives an old vintage vibes of old mumbai.

The place is ok. Rates were ok. More of spiritual than modern place. Only one issue, You can only get hot water after 7:30 am. Near by you can go for shopping, Also very good restaurants for veg and non-veg.
