A wonderful place to understand the history of the "pioneering" African Americans of the Pacific Northwest. The exhibits document interesting stories - some known but mostly unheard of. Did you know the Bush Prairie near Olympia is named after George Washington Bush, who was one of the earliest black settlers in the region? Did you know the enterprising black men of late 1800 and early 1900 started many businesses and created an influential music culture? These and many more stories. This is a must visit place if you want to know more about the society and the people that we live with and love.

The Northwest African American Museum is a must add to your PNW vacation! We enjoyed touring the museum and learning the history of African Americans in the area. The statement, “We are a Northwest museum that uses black heritage to cultivate hope and healing for all” describes the space beautifully. Our family enjoyed the entire experience touring the museum, learning about each piece of art displayed by the talented artists, and learning about the history of the building and its significance. We will definitely be back anytime we’re in the area.

I went to see Jimi Hendrix Butterfly Park which I enjoyed but much to my surprise is this African American Museum. It is rich in history of slavery in Oregan and Washington & how the lives of the enslaved became free & apart of Northwest history. The paintings of local Black artist reside here and they are spectacular...so sad my phone died! Please come and visit this Seattle gem, it is well worth it.

There have been a few upgrades, but not enough to sustain community interest in the museum. There are few exhibits, and half of the exhibits are old. The large lounge area could be divided to provide another space for exhibits. The sci-fi vending machine is novel. The museum has a large, mostly unused, lot. They should seek capital funds and expand.

Loved this place! Highly recommend visiting the museum! It is located near or in the Jimi Hendrix park! It is amazing how they repurposed an old school....a museum and affordable housing! What a blessing!

A hidden jewel. The exhibits were diverse and multimedia artworks. A true cultural experience and an opportunity to see unique African American art. The book vending machine is a gift providing access to top Black literature. Go!
