"I’ve been a client of Winston’s since 2017"
Winston who is one of the managers is VERY micro aggressive and racist. I am an African American woman and my stylist is African American. Winston has not only made African American clients feel uncomfortable but some of the other African American stylists who have worked there as well. He stares, he hovers over us with his unwanted presence during styling when he doesn’t do that with his other peers or non black stylists and customers unless they ask for his help. He ALSO has always indirectly made it known to me that I have to pay the salon (assuming I wasn’t going to pay the salon) WHICH I ALREADY KNEW AND PAID THE SALON EACH TIME I GOT SERVICED!! He never does that with non black clients. And then he sends the receptionist to tell me as if he isn’t a couple feet away from me which is very passive aggressive and rude. He even goes as far as to ask us what certain Black AAVE terms mean so he can appropriate that in his speech. “That’s that on that”, “what’s no cap mean?” Etc. It is VERY Uncomfortable as he is clearly racist but obsessed with using those terms . He asks if my stylist needs help in a condescending way in front of her new clients when she is clearly very well equipped and talented in what she does, and doesn’t need help unless she asks (he doesn’t even know how to do black hair so why would she need his help.) So it seems it’s because he wants her to look like a rookie in front of new clients. I was there when a black stylist even quit because she was pregnant and he CHASED her down the street to harass her about not “closing” out her shift by sweeping up the salon when she that’s not her job and she ISN’T THE CLEANING LADY. And he was so angry about it that she didn’t listen to his demanding orders to sweep the salon. That’s not her job and she isn’t supposed to be doing extensive labor while pregnant. When a white stylist declined to wash towels that same day he didn’t CHASE her down the street and harass her. But it’s like he expected the black stylist to just do what he says and sweep and was so angry when she didn’t ! My stylist also quit that day because she also couldn’t take it anymore! And she even tried to inform Winston about how he makes her and her black clients feel which is very uncomfortable due to his micro aggressions and he IMMEDIATELY shut down in denial and did NOT want to hear her out at all. He is VERY egotistical , VERY passive aggressive, Micro aggressive and racist !! Another non black male stylist there whose name I don’t remember even eavesdropped on my stylists conversation with a client about masks and vaccination and he made up a lie saying she wasn’t vaccinated, and told the manager of the store further trying to sabotage her job. If you are a Black woman or man I DO NOT RECOMMEND WORKING FOR THIS SALON OR GETTING SERVICED HERE!! They do NOT make you feel welcome , they try to sabotage you and it’s a bunch of mind games and passive aggressiveness to make you question your feelings about their treatment. As you can see if you look in the other reviews most of their clients are non black. And they obviously want to keep it that way. My stylist has ALWAYS been professional and VERY good at what she does. SALONS AT PR however has FAILED to create a SAFE working environment for BLACK STYLISTS AND CLIENTS!!
EDIT: I've chosen to color my hair myself. I still believe that better words could have been used when interacting with me. Additionally, the receptionist needs to be honest about what happens in the salon and also about how to put certain services into the booking system. When a receptionist is not honest, it impacts the entire team. -- I had a very horrible experience here. First, let me begin with, I am a black woman. I paid a stylist $340 as a deposit for color, cut, and more, and the receptionist recorded the service as only $215. The other white male owner told me "all they had in the drawer was $215". I went back numerous times to get my money back and was told by the owners including "Jackie" - that they would talk to Dayna. I keep returning to get my $125 back but for some reason each time, I, the black woman return, the police are called. Today, Jackie said, "we already called the police on you" and I responded, "I need to call the police on you and your staff because you are stealing." Stop dispatching the police on black women when someone in your salon stole my money and does not want to do the right thing. That is wrong and victim-blaming. I will not return to PR at Partners Salon, Downtown because their behavior was rooted in racism, misogyny, and more. Finally, another white stylist who was nice to me when I returned and attempted to get their attention said, "Do not touch me". So once again, PR at Partners Salon is a racist, discriminatory place and that is why many black women do not go there. I heard the owner say, "What does she want now?". I want my money back. Honestly, it is bad PR for the owners to not work with the stylist to ensure that money is returned but that is what happens when you do not have a salon mom. Finally, Jackie stated that her "kids were black" as if that has anything to do with anything. Just because your children are "black", they still benefit from a system where the police probably won't get called on them. So finally, the true lesson of my entire interaction from consult to refund is STOP CALLING THE POLICE ON BLACK WOMEN WHEN YOUR STAFF STEALS MONEY. I hope my interaction taught you something. Have a good day!
Strap in for this review. I went in very undecided about what I wanted but knew I wanted a change. Dayna met me with so much patience, understanding and accommodation. To start with, when going to get hair/nail/ beauty services I am always nervous due to being a wheelchair user. Dayna made sure I was accommodated by allowing me to stay seated during the duration of my services, which allowed me to have a very comfortable and relaxing experience. Another thing I was nervous about is the density of my hair, I have thin/balding hair and always feel insecure wearing it down. During my consultation I mentioned that I wanted a dramatic change but I did not want to compromise the integrity of my hair and wanted to find a way to disguise the thinning. I asked so many questions and Dayna answered all of them, she even talked me through each step of what we were doing and why - I am a naturally curious person so I really appreciated her doing this. She always pulled up pictures to give me ideas and visuals, which was super helpful. Anyways, by the end of the consultation she asked me to trust her and I am so glad I did. I felt that she listened to my needs on top of already making me feel comfortable. While my hair was processing we talked about upkeep/maintenance and products, which again she answered my questions and helped me decide what products to get based off my haircare needs but also my daily routine and personal wants. As she started blowdrying I could already tell I was in love with the color, I feel so refreshed and excited about having something new. I feel more confident especially with having a color that allows me to more comfortably wear my hair down. I am so glad we had the opportunity to connect and collaborate. I look forward to exploring my hair journey with her.
I had the most bizarre experience of my hair’s life here. I booked in for a full head of balayage, I had previously had a half head at a different salon so I had a lot of dark underneath. I was booked in with Emily who goes by HellaBlonde I think. She sat me down and instantly gave me attitude saying she was confused as to why I didn’t just go to my regular salon. When I said I had just moved here she said she didn’t think she had the skill level to brighten the dark underneath and to do the balayage so close to the roots. She said they’d book me in with someone who could do that and literally went and got my coat and held it out to me and waited for me to get out of the chair. I asked why I had been booked in with her if she doesn’t do balayage and she said she does and she’s “really good at it”. I was so confused. She said that “as an artist” she thought that because I didn’t want to fully bleach my hair and that’s what she wanted to do, that we just weren’t on the same page and that that’s “the importance of a consultation”. Again, I wasn’t ever told I should have a consultation and I don’t think that the day of the appointment that I had set aside 5 hours and $300 for was the time to do it. I was offered to speak to the manager but all I would have gotten out of that was some sort of offer to book me in with someone else when I literally never want to step foot in there again. Avoid at all costs, extremely lacking in any level of professionalism.
I’ve been a client of Winston’s since 2017. He’s not only a tremendous hair stylist and artist, but also a really amazing human being! Before I found Winston, my hair was in really poor shape. It was overly processed, orangey/yellow, and very dry/brittle. It caused a lot of insecurities for me. Winston and Marcela (another amazing PR at Partners stylist who was his assistant at the time) transformed my hair and that led to a massive increase in my self esteem. When I think about how much confidence I’ve gained over the last several years I very much credit Winston for helping me learn to love myself! Improving my hair truly helped me learn to love myself internally. I also now only have to wash my hair one time per week and it’s saving me money in the long run (even though appt prices can be expensive, I don’t need to go to the salon as often and I don’t go through product very fast!) Winston is also a really amazing mentor to the other stylists. Every time I visit the salon, I am impressed by how genuinely and positively he engages with his coworkers and how much he is constantly helping them learn and grow as stylists. Winston is truly the best of the best and I’m so grateful to have found such an incredible salon and stylist!
I scheduled a haircut with India at the Downtown location recently and am so happy that I did. I found her pleasant to work with and she made sure she understood the look I was going for. She listened well and was very observant. I was having a stressful day, which she picked up on, and helped put me at ease. Ingrid (sp?) washed my hair and gave me a wonderful scalp massage too. While India was cutting my hair, she talked about products, but I didn’t feel like she was pushing them on me. She also gave me tips on how to blow dry my hair as it tends to frizz easily. I really like how my cut turned out and the blowout is holding strong two days later. She gave me exactly what I wanted - thank you, India! I would recommend her if you’re looking for a great cut and an enjoyable salon experience. Kudos to the front desk staff too. The woman who greeted me and I paid was welcoming. The salon had officially closed a half hour earlier by the time I was done, and she maintained her politeness despite it being past closing time.
The stylists at PR downtown are THE best of the best. I have very difficult hair with a very complicated past, and my stylist Winston has gone above and beyond for me time and time again. The care he has put into my hair has been truly amazing and he is very upfront and honest about what is and isn't possible, which is so important. Communication when it comes to these things is crucial and I am ever so grateful that he has taken so much time to listen to me and let me know the best course of action for my hair. He is a master with color and I trust him wholeheartedly both as a stylist and a person generally. I can't say enough good things about him honestly! Aside from that, everyone else at the salon is incredibly welcoming and friendly and they carry some of the best product lines out there. If you find that there is a waitlist for some of the stylists, there is a good reason for it and it is absolutely worth it. I'm so happy I've found this place and I'm always thrilled when I get to visit them.
I suspect Jacqui performed a full head transplant while I was preoccupied playing on my phone. There is simply no other rational explanation for how I walked out of PR at Partners feeling like a million bucks. For reference, I walked in feeling like a grungy dollar bill that had been defaced by a toddler (I'm the toddler in this brilliant analogy). Jacqui and Bre are amazing. I gave very little direction, I just knew I needed a change. The cut is head and shoulders (see what I did there? ) above anything I've ever had and frames my face perfectly. The color compliments my skin tone and works in both professional and fun settings. They even showed me how to blow dry, curl, and what products to use, because, well...again, I'm basically a toddler who would gladly spend my days in a ponytail. I'm beyond excited to have a professional and grown-up head to work with. Thank you so much to you both!!
I have been going to this salon since 2015. I found Winston on IG and after looking at his work I made an appointment. Since then it has been one amazing experience after another. When I first became a client I only did hair cuts and he gave me gorgeous blow outs. I wanted to do color but I wasn't confident I could pull it off. After some time and Winston being so kind as to answer all my questions I decided to go for it. We start out small with some highlights, as my number one goal has always been to have healthy hair. Now, years later, we have practically done every shade of reds, purples, some pinks, and blond all while maintaining my hair health. I have even seen his former assistants now stylist for services, Marcela and India. I can't recommend Winston and the other stylist in this salon enough. They are talented and truly kind souls.
I had a terrible experience here the one time I tried it. I had Jasmine for a haircut and color and she was terribly unskilled to work with. When she messed up the color, she offered to fix it the next day, but she took my tip and did not show up the next day. I had traveled from out of state to meet her. The manager would not refund me. I chose to try it because Deloitte senior management would go here in the middle of the day for their appointments and I was trying to be the job I wanted. It was close to the old Deloitte G street office, which was superior in relationships than the Rosslyn office. They were definitely not looking to keep my business. I tried the K street location once or twice, where I got a cut that was technically good but not flattering.
I had the BEST hair experience here. I've always had super long hair, to my waist and recently my hips, but lately my hair has become noticeably thin. It needed to be cut and what I had been doing is get layers to make it appear fuller but finally decided I was gonna get a lob. I was extremely nervous about getting it done but when I saw the reviews for PR and the photos I decided to go here. It was the best decision I have made concerning my hair in years. Maiya did my hair and she is AMAZING! She was easy to talk to and she made sure to advise me on how to style my hair since I had never had it short before. She listened to everything I asked for and had concerns about. The end result is exactly what I wanted and I feel so much more beautiful.
Unfortunately had a bad experience at the Old Town location. I asked for a trim...only wanting an inch or two off my hair, and somehow a total of 4-5 inches were taken off, with layers that were extremely short and not the "long layers" I asked for. My hair looks completely botched and the layers are chunky and all different lengths. I went back the next day after washing it and looking at the haircut as i'd style it, and had a different stylist attempt to fix it. They were very nice and agreed it looked horrible and did what they could, but it's still the most botched (and far from what I asked for) cut i've ever received. Know hair grows back, but such a bummer, especially right before the holidays when I have holiday photos!
Very disappointed with the service. Very poor communication. I came for a simple hair cut. I had to cut my long hair to get rid of dry and damaged ends and it finally started to grow out healthy and shiny. Just an inch of old highlights were left in the front on one tiny thread of hair. I asked for a haircut. Instead was tricked into dying the entire hair. The stylist didn't tell me she will color the entire length of my hair. And DID NOT INFORM ME OF THE EXTEA COST. Now after 10 month of growing out my natural hair free of chemical treatment, I am back to square one with a shade darker than my natural hair. I am never coming back because it was simply unprofessional and shady. Extremely disappointed and angry.
Unfortunately I did not love the haircut I received. Both my friend and I went here on separate occasions and had disappointing results. I am not sure if the stylists made a mistake or purposely cut layers into our hair. Even if they were purposely done, the lengths were not even on each side. I did not notice the shorter layers until a few days later when I styled my hair differently than the salon had. By then it was too much of a hassle to reach out and it is just hair and will grow out. The staff at the salon were very kind and the services were very afforable. However after two bad experiences here, I do not think I will be returning.
The PR Downtown team is THE BEST. Winston has been coloring my hair for five years, and he is not only one of my favorite people, he is an incredible artist -- his consultations are thoughtful and thorough, and his work is second to none. The salon is welcoming, bright and accommodating, and the staff seems to genuinely seem to enjoy working there. There are so many talented folks, too -- Nadine, Marcela, India, Patty, Cat, Huey, Hermes -- and the front desk staff is always helpful. I've gone to tons of salons in DC and this one has the best people by far!
I am traumatized. Worst haircut of my life. I asked for an asymmetric graduated bob and lost a lot of hair in all the wrong places and layers but still have no graduation so it makes me look like a character from a 1950s Chinese communist movie. My mom could have given me this cut for free and saved me over 80 bucks. But by the end, I knew he had no idea how to fix anything so basically was thinking of this as paying him to stop touching my hair.
Was recommended to see Rebecca by a friend and I am beyond thrilled with my hair! I am always nervous when I have a new person do my hair. HOWEVER, Rebecca did an amazing job!!! She was very good at letting me know what exactly she was doing, what products she was using, and she was very friendly. But most importantly, she listened to exactly what I wanted…and she delivered!! I will definitely be going back to her! She is truly amazing!!!
AMAZING experience! Clifford was my hair stylist and I’ve never felt more taken care of. Clifford had such positive energy, gave me exactly what I was looking for and was amazing overall. I felt so looked after. The salon is fantastic. The workers are incredibly friendly and helpful. The shop is very large with bathrooms, free Keurig drinks and different stations. This experience was fantastic and I’m incredibly happy with my results!
Marcela has cut my hair twice now, and this second time around, I was unsure about what to do with my hair but she was able to listen to my wants (keeping length but getting rid of split ends) while framing my face. She also styled my hair and gave me tips for my hair type (thick and wavy). Marcela is super nice, too - I highly recommend her! When I decide to color my hair, she is who I’ll go to!
I've been going to PR for 3 years, and it's such a relief to have found a salon in downtown DC that's not pretentious, reliable, and makes you feel at home. From the front desk staff, to the assistants, to the stylists, I'm always welcomed with a smile. Michael is a master at his craft and knows color! My hair is left looking and feeling amazing every time. Highly recommend!
I had an amazing experience at PR at Partners. Maiya was my hair stylist and she did an amazing job. She was nice, professional, and knowledgable about her craft. The salon was clean, professional and welcoming. I encourage everyone to go there. If you have natural hair like me go see Maiya!!! She will do a great job!!!
Hughey was my stylist. never had to wait. He was always ready for me when I arrived for my appointment. And it was not an all day "adventure" like other salons I had "encountered". A++ for this salon's professionalism, and customer service. Hughey is THEE BEST! …
The stylists I have had at this location of PR at Partners have been incredibly friendly. They always offer tips on how to keep your hair healthy. They keep a wash, cut and style to about one hour. I find this location very convenient, near two major metro stops.
I've gone here a few times and saw different stylists. Each time, they did a great job with easy booking. Not a fan of their color...washes away too soon but the cuts and styling was great every single time. Prices are decent too. Will be back for sure.
I came for a haircut after months. My stylist “My” was absolutely amazing and helped me get out of my usual look with a fresh new style. She was super helpful with tips and very attentive. Had a great experience!
Good haircut by Jacqui but unfortunately she rarely is on time. Had to wait over an hour last time and no one even called to give me notice she was running so late. Unfortunate the customer service isn’t better.
Huey is such a talented stylist! Im very particular with my hair- it’s straight but not everyone knows how to give a good cut. Huey gave me gorgeous body and movement, and he was super nice. Will go again!
I go here to see Hermès! Every haircut I get is wonderful and gender affirming and the place itself is well kept and fun to be in. I've never had a haircut this great before now :)
I just moved into the city... And I was looking for a place to get a haircut , Jacob is always helpful and with the best energy.. Reasonable prices at the DC standards...
Damari was very attentive to my hair needs. She did a great job. All staff were professional and friendly. The shop has very effective Covid protocols in place.
I love Clifford for my curly hair. Nice well run shop. Good location near metro center. Range of experience among the stylist means a range of prices.
Finest team in all DC, if I want to look good I go there. They always inspire and make classic and trendy looks fit my personality!
Michael did a great job, very professional and gentlemanly. Prices are moderate. For travelers, please note: cash only tips.
Courteous staff, reasonable pricing, quality service. I like that I can get an appointment with my stylist on short notice.
India was fantastic! She helped me through a bad haircut (emotionally, too!) and I would recommend her whole-heartedly!
Omg the service was beyond that I could have imagined. Helen knows what she is doing when she is doing hair …
Love the environment in the salon! Everyone says hi as you walk in and the stylists are the best in the world!
Pat has cut my hair many times. Quick, efficient, and does a great job. I'll keep coming back here.
Lovely little place. Hermes always does a great job
Winston is the ABSOLUTE BEST with color♡
