This has always been one of our "go-to spots." Went in on Friday (9/15/23) night at about 5:45. There were 4 of us. They weren't that busy as we were able to be sat after only about a 5 minute wait. Our waitress took our drink order and brought them out a few minutes later. Just waters and sodas. A little while later, she took our food order. After about 40 minutes, we still did not have food. We also did not get another visit from our waitress, but another young man did come to take away the chips and salsa, so we thought surely the food would be out soon. We waited patiently. The waitress came and told the table seated directly behind us that their food was on the way (they ordered shortly before us). She apologized to them for the long wait. She said there were a lot of large tables and large orders, so she was helping out in the kitchen. About 10 minutes later, she came back to that table and delivered their food. Shortly thereafter, she finally came by our table, not with food and not with drink refills despite the fact that we had been waiting there for almost an hour with the same drinks and no food. She only said to us, "I don't know if you heard me telling the other table we had some large orders, so your food is taking a while longer, but it should be up next." We did not complain. We were just happy our food would be coming soon. We then overheard someone at the host stand telling someone else that just walked in that the food was taking about an hour or longer to come out before they got sat. They left. We said to ourselves, "I wish they would have told us that when we walked in." Instead, we've been waiting over an hour now, and still no food. But the waitress did tell us that our food was on our way. We waited another 15 minutes and still no food. We finally got up and left. Worst experience at a restaurant that I can remember, not just here but anywhere. The food sucked, as it never came after about an hour and 15 minutes. The service was arguable worse. And to top it off, when we walked out, no one even cared. The host held the door for us and asked how everything was. I let him know that we had been waiting over an hour and only saw our waitress twice and never got any food. All he said was, "Yeah, we're sorry about that." But offered no solutions, just smiled as he watched us walk out. The last time we were here before this had been our worst experience here before, but we still got our food and left without being hungry. This experience takes the cake for the worst ever and seals the deal. We'll never come back. We used to love this restaurant, I'm not sure what happened to make them try and go out of business, but they seem to be working real hard at it. They were even better during COVID than they are now, and that says something. We instead went to El Patron on Montgomery. OMG, the two dining experiences were like night and day. Everything at El Patron was perfect. You might be thinking that's not hard to do after that terrible experience at Papa Felipe's, but seriously. We were sat quickly, they delivered our drinks and food timely. My drink was never empty before I had another one waiting for me. We saw the waiter multiple times throughout the evening. So much so that he felt like a friend when we left. The manager was walking around the restaurant throughout the evening, talking to tables and making sure everything was alright. We talked to him 3 different times. There were mariachis playing in the restaurant, The decor is on point, compared to Papa Felipe's Christmas lights in September.... The food at El Patron was some of the most delicious! If Papa Felipe's wants to know what a good New Mexican restaurant is like, I would suggest that they visit El Patron and take notes. They might learn something. Although I doubt they care, it shows based on how they operate their failing restaurant. El Patron saved the evening that got off to a terrible start at Papa Felipe's and gained a repeat customer in the process.

I lived in Albuquerque 18 years ago and this was my favorite! I am visiting from California and I had to come here. The food was positively delicious! I was shocked they had my green tamale pie. I couldn’t even speak! My food was the best I’ve had in years! The corn, the beans and my green chili tamale pie. Now to the negative. Our server didn’t seem to have much of a pulse. She never asked once how we were doing, if we needed anything else-nada. My Mom asked for coffee and our server forgot. We then asked another woman (only to be told she was the manager) she was extremely indifferent. I wanted to apologize for asking if my Mom could get coffee. She glumly brought my Mom coffee. We asked for creamer. She forgot so we asked our server and she brought it out (no sense of urgency, whatsoever). I heard this manager “telling” the sweet, gentleman cashier how to clean menus and how she likes to stay on top of things. Here’s a tip. Stay on top of your customers and this female server. The “manager” had no personality, never smiled, never acknowledged customers. I became very interested in her lack of interest in her job. I was seated at the first booth to the left as you walk in so I had a great view. I tell you, if this manager is the best you can hire, she must be family or a friend. With food that delicious, I’d make it a point to pack that place with above average customer service. Energy. Enthusiasm and plain old doing the job you’re paid to do. I’d keep that super friendly, happy bus boy and teach him to be a server! I resented leaving her 15% tip. I’m tired of tipping bad service! I have decided today, I will not do so again. I’d love to train your manager and servers in exceptional customer service. The tips belong to your cooks, kitchen staff, cashier and bartender! They were on point with the taste of the food and deliciously perfect margarita and sweet dispositions. I will order to go before I go home to California. I won’t dine in to receive warm bodies greeting and serving me and leaving the dreaded obligatory tip! Train and execute the training to your entire staff Papa Felipe’s! You’ve been in business this long, step up your game! Manager needs to be dressed professionally, and act like the leader she’s been hired to be! If not, find someone who will. I’ll look forward to ordering my pick up order. I will happily drive half an hour!! Thank you for the delightful and consistent flavor. After 18 years, I’m impressed. I do wish the tamale pie was in the bowl like before. It had that yummy entire top covered with the moist masa! Love it!

2019 pre-pandemic. Fantastic Mexican food. Reasonable prices. Terrific service....the server actually remembered my food allergy when I returned a few weeks later. Papa Felipe's is the FIRST stop when friends return to NM from Long Island. The only negative is that parking is inadequate. 12-2023. I hadn't been there in a while because of a terrible experience about a year ago. I have a friend visiting who really wanted to go there, so we did. The restaurant was mostly empty at 130pm on a weekend. The food was good but not great from a very slow kitchen (36 minutes from ordering to serving with only 11 tables of customers), and the prices are up 30% or more from late last year. They now charge $1.50 for chips and salsa. Again, we had the fantastic server who's been there forever. Additional major drawbacks... 1. The bathroom isn't very clean, and there is a terrible stench from the entire bathroom area. 2. The bill has suggested tips that are mathematically inaccurate. My total was $22.47, and the suggested tips were 18% at 4.93, 20% at 5.38, and 25% at 6.92. I'm a licensed high school math teacher. 18% is 4.05, 20% is 4.50, and 25% is 5.63. I feel like there's definitely been a change in mentality from family-friendly hospitality, great food, and great service since the pandemic but more noticeable in the last year or so. Now, it is a very slow kitchen, smaller portions, price gouging, and intentionally deceptive tips. I wouldn't be surprised if they have to close down from poor business plan within the next several months. It's such a shame that a great restaurant is being run into the ground since the decades long manager and chef Larry is gone.

This rating goes to an experience we had this week. The restaurant’s food is usually good, but the service has been declining. On our last visit we waited 1:20 mins to be served our food. The hostess did it advise of the wait time and out server did not check on us during that whole time until we flagged another server to ask about our food (1 hour in). The server came to say “we are short staffed that’s the reason for the wait”… (not an apology, which ok.. but not ok). That would’ve flown if we never been there, didn’t see the staff, and they fact that they are way more equipped that during COVID (where we still supported the business) and the longest times we’re up to 30 mins with people checking and letting us know it would take a bit. Also, that would’ve made sense if we didn’t witness 4 parades of very large to-go orders go by, while we were there still wondering why. After another 15 mins, we flagged the hostess as we were ready to just abandon being served that day… 5 mins later, our food arrived… to add insult to the injury, one of the orders… was COLD. We took the cold order to go and heat it home because we were afraid it would take another hour to get it heat up (and we always thought “we are not that kind of people” but sometimes they force you to be). It is great to see the business having clientele, and that the to-go business is booming. But if you have a full house, maybe priorizar the people who made it a point to visit you and leave tips. Also, communicate with your customers, we were invisible to our waitress and it was the first time anywhere where I had to ask if they forgot about my order or that I was even sitting there.

I have to start by saying this is a positive review. But to preface it, I must say, I can't be the only person who thinks that the quality of service, from restaurant waitstaff in particular, has significantly decreased post-pandemic. With the cost of everything on the rise, it has become a luxury in our household to dineout. While I don't mind the splurge occasionally, I splurge for experience of being waited on. Yet, more often than not I find myself paying for the experience without receiving the experience. With all that being said, the service we received while dining at Papa Felipe's Mexican Restaurant off of Menaul was exceptional. Our waiter, Brandon, was quick, attentive, knowledgeable and hospitable. Thanks to the service we had there tonight, we will be adding this to our list of restaurants we return to who provide quality dining.

I've been coming to Papa Felipe's since I can remember throughout it's various owners and I dont think I'll ever totally stop eating here but the last few times I was here I noticed a trend. Almost every lunch time I've come here it's been busy which is of course a good thing. The last 3 or so times it's been a almost full restaurant with a bare bones staff of 2 or 3 servers, 1 busser, and a manager working the door. I'm sure the servers like it because they can work hard and make more money and the owners can keep labor costs low but sometimes it's just impossible for the staff to be several places at once and I've noticed evidence of my food having sat under the heat lamp for too long. I know it's impossible to predict how busy a day will be but perhaps adding a food runner/2nd busser may be a viable option to keep things moving at a quicker pace. Just my opinion of course.

We have been dining at Papa Felipe’s for 43 years. It is our restaurant for excellent Mexican Food and Service. Last night, Esther waited on us. If I wasn’t retired I would have tried to hire her on the spot. She was EXCELLENT in every way. Her positive attitude and approach to people. The way she took very careful care to make sure each person was ordering exactly what they wanted. Not just my group but every table she attended. She was most efficient in getting the food to the table with as little wait as possible. She continued to check that everything was served correctly and quickly. I watched her very quick pace between her tables and the kitchen. I observed the very nice way she interacted with other staff. I compliment Papas for hiring such quality people. Esther is a STAR.

We visited on a recommendation, and after having an excellent experience this was one of the first places we thought of when we needed to grab dinner on a recent Saturday night. Despite being busy when we arrived, we were seated immediately. Service was excellent, friendly and engaging, despite clearly having a lot of ground to cover. Our waitress seemed to have 1/3rd of the restaurant, and yet managed to be everywhere she needed to be - amazing. There were several large groups and the restaurant was busy, so we were warned there may be a wait for food - but that didn't happen, dinner was brought promptly. As we expected, it was as excellent as we remembered. If you're looking for New Mexican-style Mexican, you can't go wrong here. We'll certainly be back!

The food here is great and it was delicious! The service sucked. The waitress we got rushed us and made us pay our bill right away. We had just got our food. Then, after the other waitresses couldn't be bothered to check on us because we "paid" already. You are better off just doing take out or ordering from Doordash. Lynette was our waitress, if you get her ask for a different area. Our food took forever to come out and there were people who came after us that got their food before us. Some Father's day celebration we had when we decided to eat here. Never again just take out from now on.

Upon exiting my vehicle I was greeted with the enticing smell of food on a Sunday night, the restaurant was busy and we were seated within 3 minutes. Our waitress was working very hard to accommodate everyone and did so very well despite being understaffed. The Cadillac margarita and house margarita were very flavorful and not overly sweet. The menu was overwhelming with so many entrees and options that I seriously wanted to order one of everything, it was hard to decide. The salsa included with the chips was great as was my combination platter of two tacos and a chilli relleno. Visiting Albuquerque we had to drive across town from our hotel to dine here and would definitely come again!

When we came out to eat here , we were sat immediately and waited on immediately. The restaurant has a comfortable and warm setting with nice decor. Our waitress Esther did a wonderful job! She was very consistent with refills and all needs we had. The food on the other hand was delicious!! The chicken and chile enchiladas I ordered were perfect. I recommend this place to anyone! This place is locally owned, been around forever. We used to come here at least once a week, but haven’t been for the past two years since we moved across town. Went recently for lunch and it’s still as amazing as I remember. Always got the combination plate. You can choose three things and one side for lunch. I got the chicken enchilada, chili relleno and a carne adovada crispy taco with a side of potatoes, your choice of red or green chili. Comes with fresh chips and salsa and sopapillas after your meal. Everything was hot and fresh, recommend.

I truly hate dining in groups that are bigger than 4, and always make it a point to carry cash when I know it’s going to happen. I HATE the credit card dance at the end and want to leave as soon as possible. Too many people makes dinner exhausting. Hostess was great, she took great care of our party of 6. Lots of water, some beers, margaritas and great food all around. My friend did not enjoy her fish tacos and we all gave her a hard time for ordering seafood in a landlocked state. Having a puffy taco was a first for me, and I had no idea how to eat it. Holding it was not an option. Utensils had to be used. It was delicious. I’ll definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting Albuquerque.

Always a good place for what I call Tex-Mex. When you're tired of green chile in every dish, this is a great addition to the hum drum of Albuquerque's so so Mexican food. Food here is wholesome, flavorful, fresh, and easy on the palate. I've been coming here since they were at Coronado Center (yes, im THAT old) and they have maintained consistency for over 30 years. Margaritas are weak, so order a Mexican beer. I swear my Margarita had zero booze. Enjoy!

We recently moved here and wanted real Mexican food. Papa Felipe's was highly recommended and it did not fail. I have had some great Mexican food but this was above and beyond the best. It tastes just like homemade, which it is! The best part was the service. Esther was exceptional with impeccable customer service. We will go back again because of Esther..... And the food!

This was our first visit and we were so happy. Came from Rio Rancho almost bernallio and it was worth the drive. I saw them on “only in New Mexico” and decided to try. Portions are large, I ordered the chicken chimichanga and it was so good. Chicken cooked perfectly, and they’re not stingy with chicken, guacamole, or sour cream. Food was hot (including the salsas) and just perfect! Shout out to our server Ryan! It’s his third day working here and he was sooo personable. We Will be back! Edited to add, we just got the fried ice cream and I Never splurge for dessert! Delicious! And again to the owner, Ryan is a treasure! You really need to keep him!

Papa Felipe's has a special place in my heart. They have been our go-to cater because the prices are affordable and the food is incredible. Trini and her team do amazing at making sure everyone is served and taken care of at your events. Was our go to place with my in-laws. Recently our visit took a turn. No wait time but service was slow. Figured short staff so gave it some patience. Eventually was served our drinks. Then waiting around for the server to come back to place our order. At this point we were ready to leave. We ended up ordering and to my surprise my food was cold, my beans were dry as if they were sitting out. My mother in laws food was also cold. We kindly paid for the meal but went home just to make another. Disappointed to say the least. I hope management can bring back the old atmosphere and not the depressing one we walked into.

First time going there, had a great experience. The food was excellent. Most places the chicken ends up a bit bland without covering it in chili but it was excellent straight up. I was very pleasantly surprised. Chili was flavorful without being drowned out by too much heat. The taco salad was more taco than salad. Very meat heavy and we had to ask for more lettuce to balance it but I'm sure most people like it that way. It seems everywhere we go it's that way. All in all it was fantastic and we will likely become regular customers.

Of all the times I go out to eat there is only maybe a handful of servers that have the whole package. Ammee at papa Felipe’s does such a great job every time we go! She always has such good energy and conversation, very friendly, good atittude, fast and efficient service. Having good food is only half the battle of a successful business. I wish there were more servers like her. She deserves a raise! On top of the food, she’s one of the other main reasons continue to eat at papa Felipe’s. Thank you for you service!

Normally we eat in the restaurant and it is a good experience. First time ordering it as takeout. I had the # 57 Tacos El Carbon. The tacos were folded not rolled. It seems like they assembled the ingredients but did not cook them like they normally do. The order was missing my avocado salad. My wife ordered the #22 Navajo Taco. Normally the toppings are out almost to the edge of the fry bread. Tonight they were at least 1” away. You could tell it was significantly less than when we eat in the restaurant.

Enjoying a delicious meal with friends and family when after 2 wrong drink orders which was handled well by our server with no issues a very rude manager came to our table. She insisted the drinks were correct and informed me that she was charging me for the drink I returned. I arrived at this restaurant to order a to go order, my coworker and I sat at the bar for a long time before our order was taken We had a drink and waited on our order for approximately 30 minutes and the order was not as expecting order was accurate except the spit ticket and the sopapillas that were supposed to be added the order. Excellent New Mex lunch. Their menu is pretty expansive, with lots of great options that make it pretty hard to decide, but I went Adovada stuffed Sopapilla w/Papitas. It was an Herculean effort to finish the platter, but it was delicious, and that sure helped the cause. Real nice decor to set the mood, too. Staff were pretty busy, but we were in no rush, as three old high school buds gabbing away and reminiscing of decades or yore. I'm not local, but visit every year, so I can see another visit in the future with that great menu...

The food was great and atmosphere was wonderful at Papa Felipes's! The waitresses and staff were attentive, orders taken and brought out with no long waits. I feel they went above and beyond for their customers. This was both excellent food and customer service. Plus, The prices are fair and they are open late on Sunday. Since we had never been here before, me and my husband ordered the Plato Grande. It has a sample of everything we wanted to try. And it was all delicious. From the chili rellano to the chicken enchilada. And while I like my guacamole with more chunks the flavor was delicious and fresh. My husband (who never eats guac) loved their creamy style guac. There was so much that what we took he with us after we ate looked like a take out order. We will definitely be going back.

Great food and exceptional service from our server, Esther. Papa Felipe's is a bit far from our house, but we were nearby so stopped in for dinner on a Friday. My wife had chili rellenos and I had the Tacos al carbon. The portions weren't huge, but its more than we need needed and the price was less than we normally pay for breakages out. The food was delicious and Esther took good care of us. We'll be back!

Good spot for new Mexican food, older building, if you're nit picking, it could use some attention but not bad. Clean, closer quarters as far as space. Service was fine this time, more transactional but not rude. Usually is better in past times. Their carne adovada is good, both red and green Chile is good, tamale was a bit dry, enchilada and taco, sides are all good. Consistent place to depend on good food.

Rudy, selling is the best decision you have made in the 5 years since you ran Larry off. The price you are asking is crazy for a building that needs to be gutted and rebuilt. Very sorry to see this business slip into the condition it is in now. We have tried numerous times to revisit but everything is the same, taking care of take out before your long-term guest. I'm from the 505 and have lived in Colorado for 20 years. We don't have Mexican food that compares to NM. This place was so delicious and I highly recommend the green chile stew. Also Ammee our server/waitress went above and beyond her job description. Incredibly kind, funny and very punctual with our needs/requests. This girl is what all wait staff should train from. Excellent CUSTOMER SERVICE

Amazing food, but wow the service is terrible. Whether you are dining in or getting takeout, make sure that you’re given exactly what you ordered. It seems like both the kitchen and waitstaff routinely forget what they are doing. They’ve screwed up our orders the past 2 times we went there — wrong meat, missing side dishes, missing toppings like avocado and even the chile sauce. The management really needs to make sure everyone is doing their job.

  • codie abr

They raised prices over a year ago, and now their portions have gotten smaller. I don't mind paying the extra, but when you pay extra and get less than before, it just feels wrong. Their Chili also has not been as good lately. I will think twice before spending my money here. Use to be one of the best in town.

The food could have been better. The customer service was alright , it seemed like the workers were to busy to worry about service. Which was weird cause we had to wait 45 minutes for our margaritas. By the way yesterday was National Margarita day , . Someone forgot to tell papa Felipe cause there bar closed at 8 which is extremely sad I will not be returning to this place. I didn’t even bother taking picture s. It was that bad.

This was our first time eating here and we weren’t disappointed. Great atmosphere, yummy food and our server, Marissa was amazing! She was personable and made the visit that much better. Will definitely come back when we are on this side of town.

We've been enjoying our Papa Felipe's meals for a lot, a lot, of years. We love it. Every once in awhile something special happens . . . and that's what happened last time we visited for dinner. We hit the jackpot and our server was Esther . . . best service we've ever had. Hope she's there next time we come in which, believe me, won't be too long. Go ESTHER!!

Thank you, Ammee, for keeping the coffee and creamer full, plenty of chips and salsa on the table and being so welcoming, that my family and I, can't wait to go to Papa Felipe's again! :)

Yum! This is the first Mexican restaurant that provided enough fixings for the fajitas!!! The food was amazing and they have a HUGE variety of margaritas. You get FREE fresh sopapillas at the end of the meal just like the normal chips and salsa at the beginning. The inside is beautifully decorated like a Disney World restaurant. This place is a must go in NM! Eat here.

  • Trey White

On a scale of 1-10 in all honesty I can’t even rate it at all. The service sucked, Green Chile Fries were floating in grease, Abondigas soup was tasteless. And I mean tasteless. I would stay clear of this place. My girl ordered Green Chile Stew. The same at Golden Pride is better.

Every time I leave I'm so stuffed I can hardly stand myself. But that's entirely my fault. They have to-go boxes. I just never need one. The portions are huge and the food is delicious. You get both quality and quantity at this place for sure. One of my favorite places to eat.

Our server was awesome! He was very accommodating and even gave us samples before we ordered. That food was good if you truly like authentic Mexican food. It was a bit too spicy for me and my partner. I also don’t like my food covered in sauce and most of the dishes were. The manager was terrible. Terrible attitude, no customer service skills.

  • Michael Jiron

The food was excellent but the service was really bad. Our waitress Amy was very rude after asking why we were given two different menus. We we're charged more than what the first menu had as far as prices. Mau not return due too her being very deceiving about the difference in prices after we had ordered off the first menu we were given.

My wife and I had lunch there last week and it was great! Our server Luticia was totally fantastic. She took our order almost as soon as we were seated, and the food came out quick and hot. Luticia was very pleasant and the best server we've had from any other restaurant in ABQ! Food was excellent as always!!

  • Glenwood Harvey

I either order cheese enchiladas with green chili or green tamale pie. For sides I have papitas and whole beans. I substitute papitas for rice with the green tamale pie. Both meals are filling and delicious. This is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants.

My family and I stopped here when we were visiting Albuquerque. All of us ordered something different and every single one of us were very pleased with our orders. Our waitress was great and made sure we were well taken care of. Coming from a land of Tex Mex dishes, we were thrilled to eat authentic foods.

  • Katie Christenson

I saw online that they serve a puffy taco so I had that with beans and corn. It was delicious, more like a native taco!! Also had a pomegranate margarita, probably won't order that again. They were short staffed so be patient. Our food came out quickly and our server was friendly. Loved that puffy taco!!

Waitress was very attentive and super friendly. Didn’t really love the food. Sopapillas were the “greasiest” I’ve had so far but still good. Navajo taco was sub par, and the beef tacos were just dry ground beef chunks and the shell tasted like it came from a box. We did like the chips and salsa!

  • Barry Ore

Great menu for New Mexican food and drinks in a good environment. Decor gives off a homey vibe and the service staff is attentive and friendly. The food is decent quality in generous servings. I have enjoyed this place each time I have come and it is a good local option for New Mexican cuisine.
