Parliament railway station is an underground station on the metro network in Melbourne, Australia. It is one of five stations (and one of three underground) on the City Loop, which encircles the Melbourne CBD. In 2011/12 it was the 4th busiest station on Melbourne's metropolitan network, with 10.7 million passenger movements . The station platforms were constructed using mining methods. Each platform is an individual tunnel, and are linked to the other platform in the same level by a number of cross tunnels. This choice in design left the remaining pillar of rock between the tunnels too weak to support the required loads, so it was replaced with concrete. A pilot tunnel was made, enabling the walls to be constructed ahead of the main excavation. The booking hall to the south was constructed 'upside down', with the support columns dug with augers from ground level, then filled with concrete. The roof was then constructed over these piles from ground level during a series of staged road closures, and once this was completed the excavation of the booking hall could be carried out underneath, while road traffic continued overhead. During construction the Parliament House fence had to be removed, stored then re-erected. The station opened on 22 January 1983. At the time of opening the station had the longest escalators in the southern hemisphere.

Well located and able to be reached easily by people around the Parliament House and the suburbs nearby. Very close to other transportation networks, like trams, which are going towards Melbourne’s iconic places such as: Fitzroy, Bourke St., Collins St., Richmond as well as the city circle tram. The station itself has multiple entrances/exits, which are located at Collins St., Bourke St., Lonsdale St. and McArthur St. However, not all entrances/exits have lift or disability access. I’m pretty sure the only entrance that has the access for the disabilities only at the Lonsdale St. entrance. I could say that even in the station itself, I couldn’t really find the access to the lift (especially for disability reasons) besides the veeeeery long escalator. Or it actually should be there, just the sign is not vlear enough for people to see. This is not the main, big station. therefore, do not expect (usually on Monday to Friday) to get your direct train service to your destination without changing the train at Flinders St. this station is reachable on Monday to Friday via the city loop train since they don’t always stop at all stations in the city loop. While at the weekends, most of the train services will always come through city loop first.

Hi everyone, if you are looking for friendly station staff, this skip this one. When asking for directions Andrew will blatantly ignore you and pretend that you don't exist while Jenny will be sarcastic in giving full information as part of the service that's supposed to be offered and would rather tell you that her knock-off time is just around the corner. If you are by yourself asking for assistance best to bring someone along, this form of prejudiced behaviour is UN-Australian. Good luck all!

One of the city loop stations on the Melbourne metro just next to the Victorian Parliament. The station has huge escalators one of the longest I 've seen. Easy access to tram lines and bus stops. Customer service counter is generally staffed I all hours and station closes at 12.00 pm. You can purchase the Myki ticket through the machine or customer service counter. Toilets are filthy and smell is so bad best to avoid them..

  • Le My Tran

The worst customer service!!! First of all, I don’t know why metro chooses a woman with a mean witchy face to be one of their customer service team at Parliament station, she never put on a smile and treated you like you were disturbing her, she even mumbled “what is wrong with you” when I asked questions. What the hell??? I would rate lower for her attitude if I could. (I visited in the morning 28/08/20).

This is my favourite train station because its so great. The trains are all so fast and when i go here i feel like a real commuter, not just an outsider looking in. The vending machines are nice and very classic, i like the ice coffee. I would give six stars if they would let me but they do not unfortunately. but Parliament station should have six stars

  • Nicko Hancock

Had a fascinating interaction with a station staff member this morning, in which they (literally) rolled their eyes during our discussion. I'm a full-fee-paying Myki user, and if I bring my bike on the train, I take an empty 6:20am train to the city in an attempt to not frustrate other commuters. Apologies for any inconvenience caused (?).

  • Hamish Jones

My favourite of the City Loop Stations! A sick underground station located in the heart of Melbourne CBD! Oh and trains run here often too, the new HCMT's are just stunning! The Longest escalator in the Southern Hemisphere exists here as well, make sure you hold on and try not to be in a hurry when using them as you may fall!

  • Raghava Dasari

Big station, very steep and long escalators. Close to tourist attractions, public hospitals, Carlton gardens, treasury gardens, Fitzroy gardens, exhibition building and Melbourne museum. This station is right underneath Spring street and extends from Collins street to Lonsdale street. This station is next to Parliament house.

In 2017/18 it was the fourth busiest station on Melbourne's metropolitan network, with 10.19 million passenger movements.

  • Ian Woodruff

MODERN STATION THAT FORMS PART OF THE MELBOURNE UNDERGROUND CITY LOOP Parliament has 4 platforms over two levels, accessed by long escalators (or lifts if you prefer. You can connect to any metro line from this station. There are several entry points, including one that is conveniently just opposite the Princess Theatre!

It’s nice, the seats are clean, but I just wish the Upfield train would approach more often. I live on the Upfield line, and a train comes every 40 minutes, when I miss the train, that’s how long I have to wait. Why does the Craigeburn come every 10 minutes or so, same as the Sunbury/Watergardens, but the Upfield?

  • Simon

The MTV social media analysis being played on the station TVs every morning is utter trite. Literally would prefer to watch paint dry at 6am. On another note the "Good morning passengers... " messages that are played over the speakers remind me that I'm trapped living in this dystopian hell scape, so that's nice.

  • Simon Tran

Nice escalator, however, during non-peak hours, they should not switch one half of the escalator off while they are people on the escalator. Also, toilets needs lots of improvement (horrible appearance), platform waiting zone needs to be expanded to cater for more passengers during the afternoon peak hour.

  • My Eyes

What kind of train time table? Should be 7:16 Cranbourne but It was 7:16 Flinders street. How come same time different destination without prior notice . Disgusting two Cranbourne trains wer not running without any notice .This is our valuable time of our valuable life. This is happening now more often.

  • Lara Milvain

Yeah. The escalators. Great fun, *but* if you have even a touch of vertigo, consider taking a (free) city tram down Bourke St to Southern Cross Station. The ride down to the platform, particularly in non-peak hours when you can see *all the way* down, is not for the nervous or unsteady. :)

  • Dino M

Tried to top up 5 times at a machine but kept saying “Cannot Pay”. The other one was being repaired. And the counter lady saw that I was paying with my phone and said: oh no we don’t take that - and gave me my myki back with no other solution. Bad service during peak hour.

  • Yes Expert Review

Very clean station. Notifies you when the next available train route is arriving. Many people catches the train in this stop. Accessible access to other places to go to. The train may be delayed sometimes by like 1 minute or something which isn't a big deal. Good station.

  • Raj M

Next to the parliament, this station is clean and has multiple train line services running from here. There are lifts, escalators, toilets and facilities for people with disabilities. There is a coffee shop and a newsagent as well. The station has sufficient staff posted.

  • Stefan Carton

Fine to get to work on, but once you're on your way home it's a nightmare. Peak rush means people are overcrowding trains and it becomes impossible to get on with easily half hour delays before you can get on a train. Metro and PTV need to rework their trains badly.

  • Kevin Aquino

The station is a great hub and point to get off at for various restaurants and trams etc. Getting out took a long time but it was convenient. However, if you are visiting Melb and at another station in the loop its a little easier/nicer to get be around there tram.

  • Kynan -

When this place is quiet you can walk up the escalators and it's like an amusement ride. Kinda fun. Also there are some cafes etc in the station so you can get what you need for the day. Toilets can be dodgy sometimes but that's just part of being a train station

  • Jimmy K

The Ads on the TVs annoy me & the escalators feel like they take forever. On the other hand staff have been extremely helpful on many occasions, boards and announcements are clear enough & toilets are available along with vending machines for drinks & snacks.

  • Carol Equid

The station is conveniently located for city, staff dressed smartly and helpful but for disability users could not readily see lift signs and hard for disabled persons to walk up and down exit please ensure convenient clearly visible signs for users of lifts

  • Neon

Toilets were out of order, insufficient amount of staff throughout the station and the vending machine did not work, even withholding several dollars from me when I requested my coins back. Not to mention the overpriced drink even inside the station.

  • Sam Keir

I don't mind Parliament train station with its 1000 steps to the surface! OK I counted approx. 55 steps each escalator, just feels like more! And the way you can feel the wind from the approaching train before it even comes into view, spooky....

  • Syed K

Worst in terms of cleanliness, lighting and accessibility signage for people with disability. This is right in front of our state Parliament! Politicians as usual live in their own world, not bothering about the people's thoughts and concerns.

  • robin karki

My Review based on cleanliness’s, really need deep clean. Floors are filthy, toilet are disgusting. Don’t know which decade it was been properly clean. Lack of maintenance, looks like iconic “city loop” has been ignored, what a shame.

  • Gogo Chan

The staff were so friendly and helpful giving us the most suitable fare to and from Ruthven. They also suggested sharing our myki cards with our family or friends if anyone is traveling in Melbourne within 4 years! …

  • MrComeng

opened on 22nd January 1983, Parliament station is your typical underground city loop station. there used to be a city circle train that went through here, but was turned into the city circle tram (route 35)

  • Lauren Jansz

Parliament Station Escalators are really dangerous. People can hurt themselves from not obeying the rules on the roof. Security guards have already arrested the people who disobey the rules and law.

  • Cara Wiseman

Likes: play list! Dislikes: stepless entry only available at the Lonsdale St end... a long way to travel for users down at Collins St entries. 2020 update: this has been fixed, at last! Thanks PTV.

  • Ryan W

Decent renos here, escalators looking good usually maintenance like once a week on those bad boys. One of the cleanest stations out of the loop. Entrances are a bit annoying though during peak.

  • Carl Bronkhorst

The MURL was finished in 1981 and has stood the test if time. Providing commuter's with a fast and reliable was to access the city. This one is up there in my top ten stations of all time.

  • Ryan Mendoza

thanks customer service staff Eric for being on duty 18/02/16 1250pm.. kept me safe from the psycho dude who tried to open my bag and steal something.. Keep up the good work buddy! -Ryan

  • Kumiko Yoshida

Music is too loud on platforms. There are speakers every 1m, can't escape it while waiting for my train. Everyone has different music preference. Please stop it, it's just annoying.

  • Rachael B

Love the feel of this station, the staff are alert and very attentive to anything one needs. If you sit at the collins street entry you can access the victorian free wifi!

  • Glen French

Lots of stairs & no where to move on the platform at peak times. No staff ever present on the platform (unlike Flagstaff) & when you train is cancelled, no announcement.

  • Izaakk Li

It's my favourite city loop station. Not too crowded but not quiet either. It is renowned for it's deep escalator and colour scheme is modern and bright.

  • Zaki Nazari

It has high comfort accessories but the only problem for Melbourne railway is that trains usually come late which is serious problem for time management.

  • Anthony

Male staff member PUSHED my wallet off the counter with his EFTPOS reader without apology when we were trying to fix up my myki’s concession status!

  • Stephen James Black

Train services are usually pretty on time here. Customer service here can range from extremely pleasant and polite staff to very rude and unhelpful.

  • Paul Kingston

I had the best experience here. I went to the platform and the train turned up on time. Apparently there was a glitch in public transport that day!

  • Domenic Zattra: YT official

I just love this station for the amazing escalators this station has, cannot miss them and worth checking out just for the station visit itself

  • S Chitta

Not a very busy , staff and pso's always present and in a excellent location not far away from every attraction-Melbourne has to offer. …

  • Sami Makelainen

One of the few underground stations in Melbourne. Platforms on two levels. Note to mobility impaired - only the north entrance has lifts.

  • Karena Brady

Great friendly staff to assist with enquiries. Good signage to locate exits and platforms. Audio and visualroute and train announcements

  • Ehsan Shahsavandharati

I was first suprised by the escalator! Did a little research and yeah! apparently it is the longest in the whole southern hemisphere!!

  • Zaheer S

One of the most smelly mens toilets. Wash basin taps repair for months, but looks like they wouldn't even bother to check/ test them.

  • Carole Whittle

Staff today were amazing. Following a visit to hospital my sight was not good. Two lovely staff members made sure I found my train.

  • Matt

Catch trains from here, the station has really big/long escaltors could probably have some fun sliding down them. Would train again

  • Vicky E

Nice clean railway station with 4 underground platforms forming part of the city loop between Flinders Street and North Melbourne.

  • Naveen K S

Convenient location and well mentained station. Longest escalators I have ever seen.one star reduced for longest escalators.

  • Matilda L

Cannot deal with the forced televisions on platform. Do everything i can to avoid this station. Always smells awful too.

  • Olive Cameron

The escalators in this station are awful. Too steep for comfort. I feel like I'm going to fall down them every time. :(

  • Frederick Arcibal

One of 4 city loop stations underground of Melbourne. Conveniently located but can be get real busy during rush hours.

  • Ab Bba

The escalators take me closer to the pits of Hell without needing to use stairs which is quite easy on my knees

  • Stuart Kleat

Why can't they run on time like the polar express. Tom hanks has his niche in getting from point a to b/

  • Heiko RUDOLPH

Great location, handy entrances. At the East end of the city, near parks, churches, govt buildings.

  • Lightningcubed

One of the best stations on the city loop. If only PTV could have some faster and upgraded trains.

  • Mark Aidan

Gets you around just fine. Need to be aware of the bewitching change of directions times though.

  • Chris Green

Parliament Station will improve once the building works are finished. Need more lifts.

  • Jonny Brownbill

Pretty grim place. Trains arrive and depart, so it works OK. Toilets are horrible.

  • Dan W

The smell of the platform reminds me of a hospital & for some reason I like it.

  • Not Aplic (Nplic)

It has a really chill vibe to it, only issue is those escalators make me dizzy

  • Ben Lai

It does what it needs to; facilities are adequately maintained and functional.

Easy access for pedestrians, nice layout and not difficult to find platforms.
