Maybe it was an off night, but we had a horrible experience. We were in town for a show at Warner Theater and decided to stop here for dinner. We were sat almost immediately at 5PM - which was great! However, we sat and waited for someone to come by our table for at least 15 minutes. Eventually the manager walked by and I flagged him down to mention no one has stopped. We were sat in the bar area and they were progressively getting busier, so we figured we just got missed and things would be fine moving forward. The waitress (who was also one of two bartenders) got our drink order and our appetizer order. The appetizer and drinks came out quickly (within 10 minutes). After we got the appetizer - no one came back by for another 20 minutes at which point the other bartender came over and got our food order and second round of drinks. We waited 30 more minutes and the only food that had been brought by was our previously ordered (and eaten) appetizer. I said “Oh we already had those.” Thinking this was just an error in the kitchen, we continued to wait. At this point it’s 6:15 and our show started at 7. The second bartender came by and said “I see you’re still waiting on wings.” To which I confirmed and then said we had to go and couldn’t wait so please bring our check. He brought the check and lo and behold a second order of truffle fries was listed on our check. I had to get him to take it off since we only had one order but it made us think he never actually put in wings - just another order of fries. The sad part is, we had decided on entrees while we waited for our first appetizer but in the time it took for someone to come back by, we decided to just do a second app instead. It’s not fair to staff to seat tables in their section if they’re clearly understaffed. It causes poor experiences for customers leading to reviews like this.

Stopped in for and early dinner after a long day walking around the capital. We were able to get in as it was early and the staff was so polite. Had to really debate our options because the menu was full of great choices. We started off with the spinach and artichoke dip as well as the nachos. The dip was creamy and full of flavor. I ordered the nacho's because I saw them at another table as we walked to our table. Didn't realize or bother reading the menu entry that these were SEAFOOD!!! Blown away. The depth of and various flavors were amazing and light. Needless to say we made short work of both appetizers. My wife had the pulled pork and my daughter the cheese burger both with the truffle fries. They loved it and even let me have a sample. For me it was the spring salmon and it was fresh and delicious. Would love to have a tele-porter so this could be a frequent stop.

Following a productive offsite meeting, I decided to treat my communications and marketing team to lunch at Proper 21. Overall, we had a pretty good experience. The food was undeniably impressive; it arrived quickly and piping hot, very important, especially when accompanied by some of the best sweet potato fries I've ever tasted. It was also extremely well-presented. Each member of our team thoroughly enjoyed their dishes, so the food quality lived up to the restaurant's reputation. However, I must admit that the service fell short of our expectations. It lacked the warmth and conversational tone that we had hoped for, making it feel more like a rushed "get 'em in, get 'em out" scenario. Not what we expected considering Proper 21's high rating. Nevertheless, the food alone makes this restaurant worth revisiting, so I do recommend it. However, should we find ourselves in the area again, several other dining options deserve a try.

Whether you come for the big screen TVs or the food you can't go wrong. I went to proper 21 for the first time before seeing a play at the National Theatre. We were all pleased and surprised at the menu which had a lot of great choices and some of their featured items (I highly recommend trying the Truffle fries which are not cheap except in the Sandwich upgrade and well worth the cost). it was on a Friday night and the food came out cooked as ordered the staff was knowledgeable and attentive and the drinks were well-made. The wine selection was very good as well. I will point out that the venue was very loud, and that made holding a conversation difficult as well as ordering the food. Well we had to leave at 7:15, there was live music starting up in the front of the bar which was a really nice touch, as it was a single musician with a guitar and he was not overpowering. I don't know who the musician was but he did a nice job; well done! because this bars in downtown DC I highly recommend taking the metro although there are lots of parking garages in the area.

Service was not good at all. Hostess didn't even come to the podium for 5 minutes, took a long time for anyone to take our drink orders. Not his fault but the man taking our order wasn't proficient in English and was having a difficult time understanding our order. I asked for a refill on water that never came, and the one time our waiter came back he stopped by so fast I didn't have time to remind him. We then sat and waited 20 minutes after finishing dessert to receive our check. The waiter actually brought the whole terminal with the tip prompt on it and watched us fill it out. We felt pressured to leave more of a tip than we otherwise would have. It felt pretty skeevy being treated like that. The food was really tasty but the service staff ruined the experience and I absolutely wouldn't go back. For the money you can have a much better experience elsewhere.

I and a group of friends came here for their advertised happy hour where we ordered $7 sangrias. What were not told, however was that happy hour prices only applied at the bar, not seated at a table. This fact was also not apparent on the drink menu we were given at the table. The sangrias were 2x more expensive as we had originally expected when ordering. Additionally, upon asking about gluten free options and being met with the choice of 3 salads as the only gluten free friendly options on the menu, I ordered the truffle salad and was NEVER told that there would be a 5% additional charge for simply OMITTING the croutons??? Our server and the host we interacted with were very kind, and I am not discounting their service at all. The food was also fantastic, despite being misled on the prices. I never leave bad reviews, but this place seriously needs to reconsider how they communicate with their customers.

This was an ok lunch spot. The staff were friendly and the atmosphere was fine (a little too much for me with some of the posters). I decided to go with the world's greatest sandwich and regret to inform that this sandwich was not the exception to the rule (ie, no dish named as the best/greatest/tastiest lives up to the name). Had it been named appropriately as a super BLT, this restaurant might be a four for me. It was a BLT with garlic, aïoli, and french fries that were incredibly delicious! The sandwich was indeed tasty, but not the greatest sandwich I've ever eaten. The others in my group got the proper burger, fried chicken sandwich, and the tuna poke salad. The burger and salad were given great reviews while the chicken sandwich was typical. The consensus was that the dishes were pricey for the offerings. Overall, I'm happy to have tried this place.

Came here Valentine’s Day for a casual dinner—has a nice sports bar vibe with tons of TV screens all around the restaurant! Food 5/5: Overall the food was pretty good!! The Proper Burger was my favorite, very flavorful and tasty—even the Truffle Fries were amazing. The Bone-In Pork Chop was delicious as well. And the Tuna Tartare is a good option for share plates—this didn’t come out as an appetizer, it came out along with the main entrees! Service 2/5: Service was very SLOW. Surprisingly there weren’t many customers either so I’m not sure what was the issue. When we first arrived, there was no host—we waited for a bit before a staff came to seat us, who turned out to be our server. Our drinks took over 15 mins to come out and the food took roughly 30 mins—meanwhile, a table nearby collectively got all their drinks AND food out way before us.

This review is not for the food or atmosphere (as we left before trying any). Customer service is horrible - Asked a hostess if we could sit at an outside table which did hold 6. She indicated it was okay (extremely crowded) and no tables were available inside or at the bar. We waited 10 minutes (no server, but understandable as it was busy) before we were basically asked to move. When I asked where else we could sit (this was not the original hostess that okayed the outside seat) I was met with a blank stare and she sure didn't seem to want to rectify or offer an alternative. I told the young lady we would be happy to spend our money elsewhere (shout out to The Hamilton!). Places get busy and I am always happy to wait, but her vibe was awful and not customary to the customer service at the K street location. If you do go to Proper, go there.

Stumbled across this place at the last minute and was pleasantly surprised. The waitress was kind and took great care of us. Starters: 1) Gnocchi Mac and Cheese 8/10 The cheese sauce was delicious but the gnocchi might’ve been a little over cooked 2) Spring Rolls 7/10 The steak was a little over cooked but meat was seasoned well. The spring rolls were nice and crunchy. Mezze: 1) Paneer 1/10 Although it was beautiful it didn’t taste as such. It was very bland. I was kind of disappointed. 2) Pita 3/10 We were told it would have garlic butter but it literally just tasted like a little over-cooked pita. We didn’t taste any type of garlic. Dinner: 1) Salmon Burger 9/10 A decent sized piece of salmon. It was light and fluffy and cooked just right, not over done. The fries were also very delicious.

I enjoyed the atmosphere of this restaurant. It was easy to have a larger group and still hear and talk to everyone. Unfortunately, our server was very absent. We had to repeatedly look for her so that we could get drinks refilled and whatnot. The food was pretty good. I had the Buffalo chicken sandwich. The Buffalo sauce had a good little kick to it. Friends ordered burgers, chicken sandwiches, and an Asian inspired dish (can't remember the name). They all enjoyed their food as well. French fries were good, but do not expect actual seasoning. They were just lightly salted and peppered.

We stopped here to grab a bite to eat after visiting the African American Smithsonian museum. It looks very nice inside and because tomorrow is Halloween the waitstaff where wearing costumes witch was cute. When we were seated we were told a wait staff would be right with us, though the staff took a lil bit to get to us to order drinks and food and a good lil minute to get it out to us. We started with the Korean proper wings which were really good. They had a lil spice to them. I had a burger with fries and hubby has a chicken sandwich. Both were good standard tasting not bad but not amazing. Over all I feel like everything was over priced for the taste and service.

Could use a little sprucing up! But other than that, I was, super surprised with how good my food was how great the service was, and how delicious my Ahi tuna salad was—not to too sweet. The Monday $5 Margarita was really good ! My ahi tuna salad was fabulous— I respect the fact that they made sure that nothing was wilting and weird, you know how disgusting that flavor can be. But this one was very fresh and yummy! The dressing was perfect and the service was excellent. Since the moment I walked in, all they wanted to do was accommodate my needs. I had a phone with no battery, and they charged me up and brought it back to me and my food was perfect and service is great. The food was yummy. Yum. I will come back again.

Very loud (90+ decibels). We were a group of 8 and shouting across a pretty narrow table. Menu is limited, but quality is good - we were happy with what we got. Service was not very good. Saw the waitress four times in 2 hours - twice when we were ordering, once when we got food and finally when we chased her down for the bill. The 20% tip wasn't warranted by the service we got. Didn't even get our non-alcoholic drinks refilled and had to ask a passing server to refill the bottle on the table. Times other than Happy Hour might be better for noise and service.

I’m going to keep this review as positive as I can, but I honestly think that this place is overhyped and I was disappointed when I went. First, the service was super slow. I’m not sure if they were short on staff, but that wasn’t communicated to us. It took about 30 minutes for us to get an order of mimosas. The food took about an hour to come out and when it did 2/3 dishes were cold. The waffles were so hard that you could hear the knife cutting through. I ordered shrimp and grits, which I would rate seven out of 10. The only reason why I’m giving this place three stars is because the customer service was actually good once the manager came out. The waitress barely checked our table before then. Overall it’s a 4.8/10

  • Brad H

The chicken sandwich is fantastic and the happy hour drink special is competitive. The restaurant is modern and very clean with friendly staff. The only questionable part is the menu states 5% fee as been added to support a city ordinance- this to me reads 5% has been added to the posted price as it reads Has Been not will be- the truth is it is will be added and the real cost of everything is 5% higher then what the menu says which goes straight to the owners pockets. I don't believe this wording is a mistake and it is sad to see the owner pulling a fast one on their guests. This would be a 5 star rating if it was not for his dishonesty.

I do not recommend Proper 21. At best, the dishes we had were average, with half being under that threshold. The ceasar salad tasted like a salad kit. Our drinks that included champagne had no bubbles (obviously using flat champagne from the morning or night before). The short rib dish lacked any flavor whatsoever. The carrots were undercooked, and there wasn’t a pinch of salt on any of the dish. After less than two bites each, my guests and I actually came to believe that we were served chuck roast, not short rib. The meat was the furthest thing from tender and there were no visible traces of the meat coming from a bone.

Decent spot and we did not need a reservation. We were just walking by. Decided to stop here and it was not too crowded. We were able to be seated immediately, and the service was good. The drinks were OK, the peach sangria didn’t really have a peach taste to it, and a nice touch would’ve had actual peach slices in it. It just tasted like a very light white wine. The spinach dip was very good. Seasoned very well and the fresh bread was absolutely delicious. the ginger sesame chicken is very spicy but had a good taste to it. The chicken was a little overdone so it was very chewy. All in all a decent place. I would give them 3 1/2 stars.

I was in Washington, DC for a conference and my organization had their closing reception here. I am not sure if this is reflective of the choices my organization made or if that is how bad this place is but they had a line for “tacos” which really were nachos. It was ground beef with cheese and tortilla chips. I am like where are the corn tortillas or the carne al pastor and the toppings - ! Then I asked for a mojito at the bar and it was lemon water basically. The drinks were just not good. The place layout is fine; nothing worth writing about. Staff was great though.

This is a good option if you’re downtown and need a quick bite to eat. The atmosphere is more sports bar like but they have great drinks and plenty of options for food. It’s fairly easy to get a reservation in here and I think it will be a good option for larger groups or even if you have kids there’s something to watch on all of the TVs and the staff is really nice. I’ll come back here again when I’m downtown and need to stop in somewhere.

The atmosphere of this place is really nice The food menu was limited (not what we saw online) we came here for brunch but there was not much to choose from so we got lunch instead. Ordered 2 orders of wings (Korean & honey mustard) They were lacking flavor & unfortunately we had to send both orders back they were uncooked. Very BIG wings though! Also got burgers, they were REALLY good & although mines wasn’t medium I still enjoyed it! The fries are superb as well! We also got bottomless mimosas! $20 pp! All in all, wouldn’t come back but a nice experience! Waiter was really understanding & nice.

Everything on the menu that we had was delicious and tasty. The service could have been a bit better, but the food and quality were there. We went during the quiet time of the day so the atmosphere was not all that. This is a tourist restaurant downtown DC. Music is way too loud for a table conversation to happen without elevating one's voice. Food is slow to come out from the kitchen. Quality is ok for what you pay, don't expect a gourmet dish, it's what the menu says, nothing more. Staff is inattentive, we had to flag them down for service and then again for the check. The overall feel was like an airport restaurant with really loud live music.

Thank you very much for helping my boyfriend and I celebrate six years of being together. This was a very fun and modern place with fantastic food and a variety of options. There is a good range of prices and the service was fantastic. We were always checked on. It was not too noisy so we could hold a conversation but also enjoy watching the game. The drinks were fantastic, it was a great choice to check out before our show at the Warner Theater.

A quite proper sports club with a full bar with 5 TVs and plenty of taps, outdoor seating, and plenty of more party lounges with even more TVs. The food menu was casual with standard starters, salads, burgers and hand helds, and even mussels. The service, as was the food, was excellent with the Fish and Chips and the Proper ( French) dip. Don’t get me wrong, the food was very good. The reasons I’m giving this three stars was that 1. The price was very high 2. The quality was good but the food quantity was extremely small and 3. The service was not very fast (took 20-25 mins for just two brunch orders). 4. The butter was frozen on the plate. Ambiance was good. This was almost 4 stars but didn’t quite meet the mark.

One guy working the bar, packed place, and he was flying around providing excellent service to a throng of hungry, thirsty football fans. Super impressed. Poke nachos and beer was delicious. Solid sports bar. They switched to the game we wanted to watch at our request. Drinks were on point. Proper Gentlemen and the Proper Old Fashion are my recommendations. World Greatest sandwich is enough for too and is clean and refreshing. Only down point in this place is they dont play the sound for the games, but i can get past that.

We wandered into this bar for a quick lunch in the area and I was pleasantly surprised by efficient and friendly service and quality bar food. For a sports bar I give it 5 stars ⭐️ we sat outside, I could see sports fans inside getting all excited about college football with at least 4 large screen TVs each showing different games.

  • byron subero

This is a very cool sports bar that's comfortable with TV's all over. During football season they have a special where you can get a appetizer and either a burger, flat bread or a shareable plate. I got the chicken tots, golden boneless wings, fried green tomatoes and to end it......a churro waffle with ice cream.

Came here for a party, there were some small hiccups with food not being ready at the same time, but I won’t penalize the restaurant for that due to our large group size. Food was good and came out hot. Fries were very well seasoned and crunchy. Would highly recommend this restaurant.

Although this venue can draw a crowd, you would not know it. Service was on point. We were never waiting for food or drink. We were amazed as we watched the staff work with cohesion and precision. Hands down, a worthy stop.

Went here to escape the heat and was pleasantly surprised! Had the viejo fashioned and the proper lady drink. Both were amazing. Thr staff is very friendly, the ambiance is chill and lovely, and the truffle fries were spectacularly delicious! 10/10 would recommend!

We hosted an event here (post dinner cocktail) for about 100 people. Great service and management made sure it was a smooth and seamless event. Will definitely host more private events here in the future.

Ordered a really good Blue cheese Burger that came on an English muffin for a bun and fries that were also excellent and crispy. The portions were large and service at the bar was pretty good. Keep in mind I went on a Sunday night, so it was not crowded.

Came for a happy hour / business mtg. Great drink menu - their old fashioned is very good. Had the flatbread and wings- both tasty. Will definitely revisit for lunch or dinner. Great vibe inside and great location to watch sports.

Great little sports bar not to far from the sights of DC. Was warmly welcomed and did not have to wait long for drinks or food. Live music was a great addition as well! Little pricey but the quality of food was very good! More

Lunch here was good! We had the truffle caesar salad and the chicken burger. Food took a bit too long to arrive, but everything else was fine.

It was brunch and we had Live music which wasn't too loud. I had the shrimp and grits, sat at the bar. It was very enjoyable and the bartender was attentive and knowledgeable. I would definitely eat there again.

We came to watch football. We sat at the bar. Plenty of TVs. Great bar staff. We ordered the crab dip. It was toasted on the top served in cast iron plate. Awesome! For sure a great place! I would come again.

Really solid restaurant / bar / sports pub experience. Wait staff are friendly and efficient. Menu offerings are limited enough to give solid choices that all appear "good." Recommend a visit if in the area.

The food was unexpectedly good for bar food. Especially enjoyed the truffle fries. It wasn't too packed on a Saturday night so the service was fast and food got to us quickly. More
