*Many Law Publishers facing imminent Arrest* Chandigarh - Delhi - Ahemdabad *13.6.2019* - Cyber sleuths of Chandigarh Police on last Friday conducted simultaneous raids in Delhi and Ahmedabad on a complaint filed by Chawla Publications Private Ltd. for the alleged offence of data theft under the Information Technology Act and recovered a lot of incriminating data. Premises of Indian Law Library, Delhi and Regent Computeronics Ahmedabad were raided. Mr. Ankit Desai of Regent Computers used to hack Law Finder’s website, and was caught despite using Virtual Private Networks. Mr. Amit Khera of Indian Law Library was also traced through his IP address as he was using fake address on boxes of Indian Law Library. The Police have recovered images of hard disks and other materials suspected to be part of the crime from both the premises. Further action and arrests will be made once preliminary examination of the hard disks by Cyber experts has been completed. According to Mr. Chawla owner of Law Finder database, “About 5-6 years ago Delhi based Indian Law Library started selling a law database at rock bottom prices that baffled everyone in the industry and negatively affected Law Finder sales. Recently, we discovered that the database of Indian Law Library was the same as ours, with identical typographical errors, mistakes, and other fine details matching. Suspecting it to be a copy of Law Finder, we approached the Chandigarh Police Cyber cell in January this year. After a thorough enquiry, the police registered an FIR in April, and prepared for the raids by closely observing the modus operandi of the accused firms.” Unauthorized copying of data and its commercial use in violation of the license agreement can amount to data theft under the IT Act which is punishable with imprisonment upto 3 years. No arrests have been made till now, but the offences alleged are non bailable. The Police say that further action will be taken after preliminary examination of the hard disks by Cyber experts and arrests cannot be overruled. Anticipatory bail plea were listed for today and will be decided tomorrow More publishers form Delhi, Bangalore and Chennai are under scrutiny and face similar consequences.
