From the moment you walk into Ramsgate's Ren-Ishii, it's immediately aparent that this modern Japanese-Fushion eatery is much more than just your typical, run-of-the-mill neighbourhood restaurant. In fact, far from it. With a menu boasting insightfully crafted cocktails and inspired aromatic dishes compelling you to order at least 'one of everything'; it's simply impossible not to fall in love with this rare local gem. Menu highlights include the crispy miso cauliflower tempura, teriyaki oysters (a weekly special) sashimi, and my personal favorite - roast duck served alongside a salad of wombok, apple, grilled grapes and blood orange nitsume. If this is enough to wet your appetite then be sure to wash it all down with one of their signature cocktails. The Geisha with Roku Gin, Cointreau and lychee liqueur is a great place to start. Menu aside, the staff are welcoming, warm and attentive. Our water glasses were never empty and dishes were served at perfect pacing, while staff never seemed rushed or too busy to pre-empt each tables needs. The restaurant itself is lively, without being overtly noisy and feels well-established with a clientele of passionate regulars adding to nice banter and familiarity with staff. All in all, Ren Ishii is a wonderful example of a small business nailing it while leading with creative flare, ideation and passion for product. It goes without saying that Ren-Ishii has established itself as local gem, well worth travelling from the further-most corners' of Sydney for. Thanks for having us, we'll definitely be back x

A lot of restaurants nowadays got a very noisy dinning area. This place is one of the noisiest & I've to wear a ear plug thru out the entire dinner. My boss & I were sitting across a tiny table but we either have to shout to each other or read lips. That's how noisy it was. One thing unique about this place is ... it is so dark that I can't read the menu. I've to leave my table & stand under the light to read the menu. The food quality is ok. I had better & I had worse. Whether they're value for money ? ... that would be inconclusive due to that subject would be argumentative. One thing for sure ... they self-claimed to be Japanese Fusion cuisine ... on my books, the word "Fusion" means at least "the best of both worlds", if not their "synergy" created something new & better than both worlds. However, e.g. Japanese people are having Miso Soup 3 meals daily (yes, even for breakfast). This "Japanese Fusion Cuisine" doesn't even serve any kind of Miso Soup at all. So my conclusion is "it is most certainly NOT Japanese & it is most certainly not Fusion ... more like Confusion"!

There is obviously a lot of thought put into every detail. From soft lighting, black tables and dark ceramics to the koi carp wallpaper in the bathroom. The attentive staff were quick to seat us and offer water while providing the menu. Even taking time to ask us if we had dined before. As we hadn't he asked us how hungry and made sure when we were ordering to suggest when we had chosen enough (didn't stop me from adding another 2pc dish and 3 desserts when the time came) The dishes came out quickly amd were beautifully presented. We had kimchi and renko chips, salmon cannoli, Hokkaido scallops, butterflied king prawns, tempura cauli, potato, beef roti and chicken gyoza for 4 people and it was easily shared. For dessert we shared the yuzu custard and a creme brulee.

Visited for the first time for Friday lunch. Ren Ishi is tucked unobtrusively in street off Ramsgate Road. We had sashimi, karage popcorn chicken, beef brisket tacos and raw kingfish tacos. Every mouthful was delicious. Service was pleasant attentive and efficient. The sashimi was extraordinary quality, three different fish. The popcorn chicken was served with two different mayonnaises - kept alternating and each was my favourite until I tried the other one, and then happened the whole way through eating it. Beef brisket tacos - so good I felt like ordering it again immediately. Kingfish tacos came wrapped in sesame leaf and not taco shell. Leaf didn’t really work as well as shell but the fish was delicious. Highly recommend.

What a wonderful experience we had at Ren Ishii Restaurant. Unique dishes, bursting with flavour. I recently gave birth and was so eager to eat all of the raw fish and shell fish and Ren ishii was absolutely worth the wait. The tempura oysters were a standout dish! They also had some of the most delicious cocktails I have ever had. The service was delightful and the head chef come out to have a chat with us, really caring and acknowledging each customer. I am already planning my next visit to try the rest of the menu!!!

We loved this place, nice Japanese fusion with some unique dishes - we loved the raw fish tacos + tempura oysters + Mooloolaba prawns good service and the overall atmosphere was nice - it's quite a unique restaurant for the area - we love small shared type dishes and Japanese is our favourite cuisine and we’re local it's a good find. Reason for the 4/5 was service was a little to eager throughout and we had table cleared and desert ordered before we finish our mains dish (and we didn't realise) we got it take away which was fine (tempura Balmain Bug were delicious) however overall was a great night. keep up the good work guys

Our first visit ‍‍‍ (four adults) to Ren Ishil which opened nine weeks back. The food was mostly good. The pork gyozas were routine, the kingfish salad was fine, two had the crispy pork belly & said it was excellent, one had the half slow cooked duck & said it was okay, I had the Karrage popcorn chicken which was more a diced & battered chicken with mayonnaise. The place was fully booked & was extremely noisy as all surfaces are hard so no acoustic dampening. ☹️ With the added music conversion was very difficult. We felt it was a bit too upmarket for the location which is off the main strip & pricing a tad expensive . With 3 beers & one soft drink it came to $214.

The service is great, staff are very friendly and accommodating. The food however has an identity crisis, a mix of Japanese, Chinese, Mexican and Italian. It almost looks like a bunch of ideas found online and put onto a menu. The food had so much salt, I was thirsty for 2 days. Some of the sushi dishes are waaaay overpriced. Other dishes are so small and expensive. Curry Mayo on sushi The Roast duck was amazing, very salty but still good. It does draw in the local crowds that don't venture out of the local area.

The food is amazingly good and a little quirky from traditional Japanese. If you complain about Ren Ishi food then you can’t be satisfied. It’s a family affair here and the service is exceptional. The position is nice and comfortable with no outlook but who cares. Our only negative, we were charged per head for still water at $3 / person served in a glass flask. This should be free regardless so we strike down by one star in our rating. Tip: it’s a busy venue and can get a little noisy inside when the restaurant is full. A great place to go regardless.

This place while seeming to be amazing, missed the mark entirely. All I can say is Fusion Confusion. The sushi rice tasted like rice vinegar, pork gyozas came from a cheap frozen bag (I saw this myself, very embarrassing). The beef udon noodles tasted like a beef bolognaise — there was no broth as well. The food was very subpar and missed the mark, the sushi was honestly bland and flavourless. Very overpriced. Service was poor too and then they expected a tip. I do not understand what sort of cuisine the Chef is trying to achieve but it is certainly not Japanese and was weird and confusing.

We dined here for the first time last Thursday, we had a table for six. There was plenty of parking available in the nearby streets. We had Hiramasa Kingfish carpaccio, Karaage Popcorn Chicken, Tempura Bugs and Sous Vide Wagyu Braised Brisket along with a variety of cocktails and wine. The food and sauces were delicious, the drinks were great, the staff were friendly and attentive. What more could you want with fine dining, as Arnold says, "I'll be back". Very highly recommended.

Mid-range fancy restaurant but the price is way too fancy. Good to just try it out being a local but this isn't a restaurant that we will revisit. Fine modern Japanese. Seating is comfortable and the service, especially by the Japanese? (I think) guy was above and beyond amazing. The food was fine, but one of the newer items on the menu needed refinement, but they were happy to take the feedback on board and to rectify. Given this my review has probably gone from what would have been a 3 to a 5. I personally think it's hard for new restaurants to nail everything, but the ones that want to put in the effort will eventually be successful in doing so. There is a 10% surcharge on Sundays and public holidays.

Was really looking forward to it being a new local Japanese restaurant however it was a letdown. Everything lacked authentic Japanese flavours and seasoning. Karaage popcorn chicken was very disappointing, it came out cold and the pieces of chicken were so small just tasted like coating only. The beef tacos & crab bao were both soggy. Sashimi, potatoes and crispy ling were nice. Mocktails average. The atmosphere was very nice however I don't think we will return any time soon.

Overall the food was pretty good, however the 18 pieces of sushi for something like $65 is just plain expensive. The crème brûlée was possibly closer to a crepe but was great. I can see why others may have expected something different. Experience was great and we having a good time up until we went to pay and they try to guilt trip you with a disgusting tip menu that they put in your face, just gross, 1 star review.

They did charge us for 2 bottles of tap water water which is ridiculous for 2 people who paid almost 300$ and please..if you order the crème brûlée you will be surprised as it comes in 3 layers of thin pancakes and crème ..come on! Steph & her husband are simply divine hosts with a menu to match. The White Geisha and Saporo alongside Pipis and Wagu made for an unforgettable anniversary evening .. The flavours were complex and delicious, and the whole time we kept thinking how lucky we are to have such a top restaurant in our local area. I’ve been looking for a modern Japanese restaurant with absolutely amazing food and I’ve finally found it!! Loved the modern feel of the venue and every dish was so flavoursome!! Definitely coming back again soon!!!

Great food nice atmosphere Wagyu steak from here is immaculate. Only fault would be the crab sushi roll which tasted terrible. Staff are friendly chef is nice. Would come back but hope the crab doesn’t come back

Inconspicuously tucked away on a suburban street in Ramsgate, Ren Ishii packs a punch with its fantastic, modern, Japanese style fusion. From starters through dessert, thoroughly enjoyable.

All I can say is WOW! The food is absolutely incredible - the service is amazing and the cocktails are delicious! We will definitely be back.
