Howard’s Cantina and Cocktail Bar. Located above the Rose of Australia. Historically this iconic venue in Erskenville, having been there almost as long as the town itself – 1874! Since then it has been a popular venue amongst Sydneysiders to visit for a drink or bite to eat. It has undergone a number of renovations including the newest venture – Howard’s Cantina and Cocktail Bar. The Cantina itself is in keeping with the eclectic style of the area. The new cocktail drink menu has launched and the Cantina opens from Thursday May 11. We were lucky enough to attend the media launch and heard a wonderful speech from Scott Leach, whose father bought the property 21 years ago. Howard’s Cantina is named after Scott’s father. They are proud to have incorporated different aspects of his father’s interests in the property: flowers and greens (he was a greenkeeper), bench tables as he enjoyed shared dining. We tried some of the handcrafted cocktails, a ‘Paloma’, ‘espresso martini’ and a smoked negroni with infused Grand Marnier hicktory chips, as well as a ‘whisky sour’ that was topped with Barossa shiraz. The bar is sophisticated and staffed by some talented cocktail makers. The menu, designed by Chef Chris Bell who has put together a sharing menu with a fine array of small plates, larger options as well as some beautiful desserts. We began by trying some key components of their antipasto plate; charcutterie meats, cheeses, red peppers, dips and breads. Huge servings and high quality ingredients. From the tapas menu, there was seaweed crisp with lightly dressed cucumber, raw tuna sitting atop house water crackers with smoked shallot and preserved lemons, we tried a beautiful trout pastrami with horseradish and crème fraiche, bresola with smoked tomato petal and orange. One of our favourite foods of the night was the appleboy smoked lamb ribs with fresh oregano, lemon and chilli, such a beautiful flavor and the meat was cooked perfectly. Another great little snack was the mini pork and veal sausage rolls, with a rhubarb puree and aioli. The Howard’s lobster roll was creamy and topped with caviar. Some of the larger options include whole whey braised lamb shoulder, flank steak and cooked salmon The orange cake and rocky road were outstanding desserts. With so many great food options to try, I would strongly suggest a couple of visit! We’ll certainly be going back! The atmosphere is fun, comfortable and music playing by a DJ to make for a great ambience.
A small and qiant traditional owned pizza/pasta store In the heart of Dulwich Hill (less than 5mins wall from the station). Open for lunch - mid evening (see pictures FMI + Menus). Brought the Large Americana (pictured) for $19 - hot, fresh, tasty and very much value for money. Can get VERY busy, buy well worth the wait (PLEASE BE PATIENT/HAVE PATIENCE - ALL good food made by scratch and prepared with love + by.hand takes time!). Frenetic, yet honest / nonsense and friendly staff with old fashioned, value for $$ and great food. Order via Uber Eats//DoorDash (more $$$ - delivery fees/higher app prices), take away or dine in for the full, authentic experience (NOTE: dine in and T/A = ca$h only, nearest ATM is 10-15moms walk in opposite direction at the local bottle-o ) + no booze/BYO; else this rating would of been 5 stars. A local gem and highly, highly recommend!!

We booked a table for 12 for a friend’s birthday, when we arrived the table was for ten. Not a big deal and we just gathered the extra chairs after that we went to order food. It took sooooo long that we almost forgot food was coming, eventually the food made it but my dis was wrong, ordered a vegetarian sandwich and received meat loaded nachos so sadly could not take that, eventually got my meal, cold and when everyone else was done eating. We were there from 7 to 10:30 pm, not once someone came to clear our table, we had to clear the plates and put them on a near by table that was already dirty and at some point the plates were taken but the table remained dirty the whole night and our table still never cleared from dinner. The worst part was that one of my friend’s beautiful hat was stolen from right next to us, the staff cared little and offered not much assistance in checking a camera or something just asked for our number to contact us if found. They claimed to be understaff which I understand, if that is the case do not take more bookings as a birthday dinner is a happy event not one where you wait years for meals that cost decent money and get zero service. Check your staff levels and do not create expectations that we will get a nice dinner experience when you can’t deliver. Hope this changes
Just hosted my 30th birthday at Rose of Australia and I am so extremely happy with their service and food, it was a seamless function and I cannot recommend them enough for your next event. From the booking process with cakes cakes by zio diz reviews by zio diz reviews Rebecca, to the service on the day from Rachel and her team, I had zero issues and was so happy with everything they were doing for me. The bar was so well managed and the staff were lovely, the grazing table was a hit with a range of selections, people are still talking about how tasty the arancini and bao buns were and I loved being able to have a drinks table in the middle of the function also. The vibe of this place is so cool and Howard’s Bar and the Terrace looked amazing and fit my 100 guests well. It was kid friendly too and loved that it felt outdoorsy whilst still being covered etc. amazing space. Once the function was over, we all trickled down into the main bar which was equally as fun and beautiful. Thanks so much for allowing me to celebrate my 30th at Rose of Australia!

I visited the Rose this week for the first time in many years and had the pleasure of meeting the friendly publican Scott Leach serving behind the bar. He welcomed us to the pub, made us completely at home and hosted us to ensure we had the most amazing lunch....you will not leave hungry after lunch at the Rose! Not only were the servings generous but the freshness, presentation and overall quality was outstanding....there is a wide ranges of choices suiting all needs with many healthy options for those watching their diet. I will be back again soon Scott!

I been coming here for a decade and it was good. I was today sunday around 1:40 and ordered a glass of pinot noir. I noticed the bartender (a girl) mixed two bottle that has 1 cm left each. As a result, the wine tasted off. I told her with good manners and she openeed a new bottle. She has a terrible attitude like she was doing me a favour. Guys, we are not living in the 80s anymore. How can you will serve a glass of wine combining two bottles that was opened from last night? You need to train your staff not to do that as it is lack of respect for customers. Also to have a positive attitude and apologise with the clients. As a result, i wont ever return and i will ask my friends to do the same. We as customers have the power to push for better services. By the way, the ribs were very average and comes for some reason with corn. Half rack, 45 bucks. Not worthy.

Beautifully renovated spaces industrial style with very comfy seating suitable for groups of all sizes large or small. Nice open sunny courtyard space. Impressive and varied menu with the usual pub fare range of burgers, steak but amped up in terms of execution to make it true gastropub. There’s also grilled fish and seafood pasta, and charcuterie plate for nibbles with a tipple. Special mention of the prawn crackers with spicy seasoning and the grilled barramundi with fennel and cucumber salad that was superb. Friendly staff, prices for food and drinks reasonable with good range of craft and standard beers on tap as well as nicely made cocktails. Really great pub to hang out with friends for many hours, super convenient right beside Erskineville train station. Will be my go to!

This experience was almost laughable. We booked a table for a meal, and decided to "build a board" to start. We ordered two cheeses along with a bunch of other items, including two serves of fig ($4 per serve) and a serve of cured meat (I think $6-7?). When it arrived, it was one fig, halved. Are figs $8 now?! And two pieces of shaved meat. There were no crackers, just dry toast, and no dip or oil anything to put it with other than the two small pieces of cheese. They also forgot our cocktail jug and we had to ask for it twice. We decided not to stick around for a second course and went home instead.

As is typical in the inner west of Sydney finding a spot to park your car is atrocious and can be difficult to find if you are not a local in the area.
Terrible food. Ordered a prawn dumpling salad, superfood salad with chicken and grilled octopus. The grilled octopus was two tiny tenticles for $22. The prawn dumpling salad had three prawn dumplings that were flavourless and doughy like frozen supermarket ones. The superfood salad came out without the chicken and it took them 20 mins to get us some replacement chicken and when it came out it was also a small portion and mostly sinew. Total rip off, would never eat here again which is a shame because it’s a nice venue and vibe.

The Chicken Schnitzel is succulent drizzled with a delicious mushroom sauce and partnered with a small side of salad and chips. The tacos are packed full of juicy chicken and is definitely worth trying with the jalapenos if you want the extra spicy kick. You can also choose a lettuce-based wrap instead of tortilla if you prefer a lighter and less-carb meal. The place is quite roomy and has a small outdoor seating option in the middle, also a balcony where you can enjoy a tasty meal while gushing over the beautiful dogs that walk by. Overall, a great place with great service that you need to check out ☺
So disappointing. Have been lunching here since before Covid. The last few visits I question, “is there new management?”. Today I must speak out . The WA octopus salad, burnt not barbecued . What happened to the lovely thick beer battered chips ? The Chicken Parmigiana looked as though it had been prepared by a child . Burger, ,unmelted cheese slice plonked on top of the pate.. Used to enjoy the food and people watching. Embarrassed, was in the company of overseas visitors . Won’t be back.

Good COVID compliance. Friendly staff. Nice outside area and good amount of space inside for different tastes in hangouts. Drinks Happy hour 4-6pm which is such good value for bottles of piper at half price! Food Ordered cheese platter with 3 cheeses, salami, prosciutto and extra bread. Platter could have come with some condiments as it was a bit dry on the bread just cheese and meat. Onion rings and fries were good size servings and not too greasy. Lots of clean up staff so tables are never overloaded with empties. Good after work drinks spot for groups.
Having recently moved into the area, we spent a fantastic evening at the Rose last month to celebrate a not-insignificant birthday that had snuck up on me. A lovely feel to the various spaces, great food and booze, excellent service and a hugely generous welcome (incl an unexpected bottle of bubbly on the house). No surprise at all that we were the last to be chucked out at stupid o'clock. Thank you very much, Scott and team. We'll be back.

The place looks pretty cool. Lots of light and funky decor. Service was pleasant but minimal. What happened to table service? The staff stand around chatting while our tables sit dirty. All they do is wait down one end of the bar at the till. Food was really average. I had the Sunday roast and it was all dried out. Gravy was runny and the Yorkshire pud was like cardboard. Really disappointing. Don't bother.

Really disappointed. This used to be a great go to venue for a lunch. It is now so busy with functions that are extremely loud that you cannot hear to have a conversation. The food is generally good. I ordered the nachos which I have had in the past. What was served was awful. There was no real cheese - it was a cheesy faux sauce clearly from a bottle. The guacamole was not guacamole but again something out of a bottle - no real avocado. It was awful. If you cannot deliver what should be a classic, take it off the menu!
Very nice bar with plenty of seating and lots of different type of sitting locations. Venue looks very interesting due to fact that each seating/room has its own "style". Great food and drink menu. Honestly, nachos dish was to die for. Parking may be difficult, but worth to visit.

I visited as part of an event in their upstairs space. I was incredibly impressed by the interior and the quality of service. There was another group in the space, and it was smoothly run. Although it seems very unassuming from the outside, but opens up to a lovely mix of traditional and contemporary interiors. A great location, with a good menu and a good mix of wines, beers and cocktails.

It's an ok pub. I know it's popular, but it's really just ok. Very hard to park nearby (not the pubs fault of course) Not what you'd call a "homely" establishment. It looks like the interior was designed by somebody having a nervous breakdown. Food average. Not a huge range of beers. (Sorry. I wish I could be more positive)

The Rose is an old favourite so my husband and I recently held our wedding "recovery" here in the upstairs space. Everyone was extremely helpful, from the first enquiry we sent through to the day itself - great food, drinks, easy bar tab, great space for everyone and super accommodating. Don't hesitate to book for an easy-going and good value / good quality function or celebration. Thanks team!

Went to the Rose of Australia for friend's birthday event... the finger food was left in middle of table & not circulated (some people didn't get any food) - for the food I tried, it was ok. Highlight were the arancini balls. Music was very loud... challenging to hear/hold a conversation. The event space was lovely despite the music volume.

Cracking little pub. Plenty of space and wasnt overly busy. Has nice seating area out the front on the high street. Food was excellent. Bit fancier than your average pub grub but priced incredibly. We got baked camembert with figs, bbq wings and a grilled octopus salad. Odd combination of dishes but they were all delicious and only cost us $50. Cant go wrong. Bravo

Thanks to Rebecca and her team for fast and smooth accommodation in booking large groups in the terrace and adjacent bar area; nice blending of indoors and outdoors. Great for all demographics whether for professional friends or family-friendly service.

Had the burger - bad for an Australian establishment. Normally meat in Oz is great. In this case burger patty wasn’t good. Felt a cheap frozen version. Also had the banoffee pie as dessert. It was deconstructed but badly. Bananas weren’t ripe and the rest was bad. My friends also had bad experiences. More
It's a really nice pub - in most parts of Australia it's an easy 5 stars, it's just with the tough competition in the area it doesn't quite have the vibes of the very best pubs. Staff are lovely though!

One of my favourite pubs in the inner west. Great menu that caters really well for gluten intolerance. Everything on the menu is clearly labelled and you can get GF bun for your burger or go lettuce cup option. Better wines than you’ll find at most pubs. Good spot for groups and events too.
Went to the Rose for lunch on Sunday 7/8/22. The food has definitely gone downhill. My mates both had burgers they claimed were very average. I had the crab pasta and it was not very good at all. A bowl of slop basically with barely any crab, and just tasted of tomato paste. More
The lobster tacos was the stand out dish for me. Great drinks and lively ambience. Excellent customer service. The waitress was really nice and was helping us find seats as the venue was quite packed. It’s quite nice to sit upstairs.

Tasty burgers, ribs and beer. Their on tap selection has a few of the top 100 beer lostings for 2016. Prices are reasonable and a nice atmosphere. Service time was a little slow on delivery but otherwise good as the staff are friendly. Private bookings for tables is avaliable.
After dining on the warmth, urban interiors dripping with green tropical life and zero-carb sweetness from all Rose’s people … then the spectacular share (how else?) plates come. Flowing like the FLUID that makes this piece of Sydney … World Pride Heaven! Thanks Team ❤️ …
The wettest burgers in town. Barramundi was ok although it did disintegrate halfway through, "pulled jackfruit" was just kind of flavourless chunks hanging out being sour yet bland. Buns were soggy, chips were cold.

Great food and good atmosphere. I've been here a couple of times for an event and a casual hangout with a large group of friends. There has always been a good selection of drinks and foods. We had the burgers, hot chips and nachos. Everything was overall good pub food.
Wow, food has really gone downhill, we ordered the chicken schnitzel and what arrived wouldn't rate in a soup kitchen, commercially battered chicken with no flavour above the oil it had soaked up and with a tough skin. Really disappointed. $24 for the experience.
Really nice place, friendly staff, great drinks and prices. I ordered a salad there, it didn't come with everything it said it would, and was very bland. Apparently the burgers and feies are great though.

The venue is what attracted us, nice outdoor seating with heaters. The food however was pretty disappointing. The falafel salad was average but the jackfruit burger was inedible. Unfortunately after trying once, we won’t be back here again.
At $24 you would expect a pretty top-notch schnitty but this thing was barely as big as my hand and the serving of chips it came with was outrageously stingy - literally looked like someone had eaten half of them already. The side of slaw
The tiniest, overpriced schnitzel in Sydney. This is what you get at the Rose for TWENTY FOUR bucks …. Pretty much daylight robbery, very underwhelming, oily and not tasty at all :-( have a drink here, but choose somewhere else to eat!

Good location next to Erskineville station. Price is fair and beer taste is just okay. Quite busy pub with lots of locals including builders. However, staffs are not fairly kind to talk to. Some a bit rude to people.
Good food and service at this popular venue with great decor, atmosphere and space. Recommend the Rose burger and Brookvale Union ginger beer is on tap! Top spot for friendly gatherings and spontaneous drop ins :)
Probably the most disgusting and dirtiest pub ive ever visited. Cockroaches crawling everywhere in the beer garden. Couldnt imagine what it would look like behind closed doors where the public cant see? …

It's a great pub. We walked past with our grandson. Found an empty table and had a quick drink. He thought it was magic. It's a nice community space. More
Always a good pub with good pub grub. I recommend their burgers. It's very popular, you may find it difficult to get a table during peak beer times.
Always a good time at the rose. A very popular spot but staff still mange to be so friendly.

Awesome service.... better than many restaurants. Great selection of alcohol on tap, cocktails and nice food. Great ambience.
Pathetic. This is meant to be a “grazing plate for 1”. Order something else off the menu. This was very disappointing. More
Great pub with lots of space and easy to book. Solid selection of tap beers and other drinks makes this a great local.
Love the art of this place. The chicken and mushroom pot pie was really good but a bit small for a main meal.
Great lunch spot with very pleasant Street side tables. Menu has lots of choice. Staff are helpful.
Always great service and atmosphere. My favourite Watering Hole

Nathan is a bloody legend. Meals are always delicious. One of the best pubs in Sydney
Fun pub... multiple floors and spaces, good for functions, friendly service!
