Dr. Pete Edwards took us on a History tour primarily focusing upon local sites related to the Wars of the Roses. Our first stop was Towton, where young Edward, the Earl of March defeated the Lancastrian forces in 1461, a battle that was instrumental in him later becoming King Edward IV. Pete was an extremely knowledgeable and enthusiastic guide and gave a detailed exposition of the course of the conflict and the battle that occurred here. It was great to get a feel of the topography of the land and the tactics and decisions employed by both sides. He gave a thorough and colourful account of one of England's bloodiest battlefields. Next stop was up to Middleham, one of Richard III's bases when he previously held the North as Duke of Gloucester. Again, Peter's mastery of the historical detail was second to none. Not only did we get a review of Middleham castle but we were also treated to the site of the former motte and bailey castle that stood here. His ability to find hidden historical gems was an added bonus. It was so much fun touring the spectacular scenery of the Yorkshire Dales in Pete's Land Rover Defender on a crisp and sunny December morning. Along the way we were treated to a wide ranging historical tour that encompassed Bronze Age sites to the post industrial landscape travelling through Coverdale. Dr. Edwards is truly Mr. History, detailed, authoritative and with good humour, our day whizzed past. I would thoroughly recommend one of his bespoke historical tours and will be planning my next escapade with Roundhouse History Tours very, very soon.
In December 2016 I enjoyed a short trip to First World War battlefields on the Western Front, led by Dr Peter Edwards of Roundhouse History Tours. We spent a day visiting the key battlegrounds and forts which featured in the Battle of Verdun (1916). Visibility was poor in the hills north of Verdun on the second day, and Peter adapted the itinerary to focus instead on the Battle of Vimy Ridge (1917), better suited to the local weather conditions. This was my first visit to the Western Front, and I was impressed by Peter's historical knowledge and insights, relating both to the particular locations we visited, including the short-notice move from Verdun to Vimy, and to their strategic significance in the war generally. He had the ability to bring the key events to life as we scrambled energetically around the fortifications and trenches (at my request - we could have stuck to the main paths and moved at a more sedate pace). He also put things in broader context in the more relaxed environment of museums and cafes, where his ability in the French language put mine to shame! He was able to pitch his explanations at just the right level, adapted to my own particular degree of knowledge of the history of the period and of the local geography. I would thoroughly recommend Peter as a provider of well-organised and adaptable bespoke tours, and would particularly endorse his skills as a Great War guide.
Last week I toured the Battle of Towton guided by Dr Peter "Pete" Edwards. I would thoroughly recommend Pete as a guide after what was an enjoyable and insightful tour of an important event in English and British history. Pete brought the battle to life with his knowledge, passion and energy, while providing great context of the battle within the "War of the Roses" in general as well as the resonance of the political arguements currently between the North and South, and Europe.
I had a memorable tour of Yorkshire historical sites with the indefatigable Dr Pete Edwards. He brought alive famous sites like Towton Field and Middleham Castle. He also introduces me to some less well-known gems like the spectacular Thornborough henge, and the "hushes" (open cast lead mining) in the beautiful Coverdale. Pete has an encyclopedic knowledge of Yorkshire's history, and a great passion for its people and culture. And he's great company!
My and children and I had a bespoke history tour by Pete. This opportunity was not only educational, it was fascinating, Pete's insight into the past and his ability to draw on his customers questions held our attention all day. There is no limit. Pete's historical and geographical knowledge. Can't wait for our next, thanks Pete Rob, Magnus and Morven
