I have two children at Sherbrooke and the eldest has been there for nine years. This school is the real world writ small - no uniform, teachers on first-name basis, small kids mingling with older kids so there is very little age separation. It does a surprisingly good job of dealing with a wide variety of students. Much is made of the school's ability to effectively cater for children with diverse needs but it actually does remarkably well academically as well - Sherbrooke won the Victorian leg of the International History Bee and Bowl in 2018 over a bunch of highly fancied (and very expensive) Melbourne schools. March 14th (Pi Day) is celebrated with a pi-recital contest, the results of which are astounding. The Science Fair in August has some amazing displays from prep to VCE and the trips to China in primary have to be seen to be believed. I drive past five other schools to take my children to Sherbrooke and I've done so for a long time, knowing that my two very different children get an excellent education. Beware of online reviews delivered through the narrow lens of one person's experience. These things are naturally self-selecting towards people who want to convey a negative experience and the vast majority of people happy with the service are just busy getting on with their lives. I'd recommend this school - but that's just my opinion based on the fact that my kids love going there. If you're thinking about this school you should probably visit because online reviews (including mine) may not properly reflect your needs or circumstances. Just visit.
Pretty disappointing start to my daughters high school life. The VP assured me that my daughter would have some form of a jade mic testing done prior to starting, as she is gifted and needs extensions in many classes- this never happened, no matter how much I tried to get this sorted out. Along with her never receiving her offer to take part in VHAP, which was sent to the school with no response or notification to us. My daughter was also threatened to be killed and bashed by the same student multiple times. This student and my daughter had a physical altercation from both and then again against my child (with her not retaliating this time). The school only took action after I went to the police and told the school my daughter was not returning till they could provide a safe learning space for all parties in this matter, and that they needed to provide her with work to do at home. She was homeschool for about 3 to 4 weeks. The solution to the bullying (and subsequently to her not being challenged in her school work) was to put her up into year 8. As a whole, I am extremely disappointed with the school. However Scott Fisher is definitely an asset to the school!! If only the principle and VP were too.
I was let down by this school as a student. I started Year 7 here and met some of my greatest friends thanks to this place. But after problems began in my later years, that's where things went sour. I was getting bullied daily by students and when raised to teachers they apperently couldn't do anything. I fell behind by year 9. Our class was hell. Kids acting out EVERYDAY, it almost felt like to me that the teachers were helpless. By year 10 I thought it would get better. Everyone praised our teacher Sam that she was great. But for me my experience her was the complete opposite. She was constantly rude and condensending towards me. Whether that was because I had a bad reputation myself, I still don't know. My attendance dropped because the last place I wanted to be at was school. But adding to that I was experiencing health issues that I wasn't aware of the time. It came to a meeting where my teachers told me that the only option was for me to leave the school. They had nothing to help me. I believe that this school lost its charm many years before I started. There was some genuinely great teachers here. But I think Sherbrooke eventually got the reputation of being the "dropkick school".
After attending myself in the early 2000s I thought that this school would be the perfect place to send my child. Boy was I wrong! Some great teachers, some absolutley terrible ones. The environment can only be described as chaotic, uncontrolled and unsafe. No follow through or consequences for behaviour for majority of students. Leading staff are not interested in following Dept procedures nor are they interested in having any sort of positive parent/teacher/prinicpal relationship unless you turn a blind eye to what happens (or lack thereof) in the classrooms. 20 phone calls and numerous emails and still waiting for a response from the principal SINCE MARCH! I would strongly recommend keeping clear of this (once fantastic, now a circus) school and going elsewhere. This school should be closed before something serious happens. We are so disappointed that the school continues to let down so many kids and families.
I went here for 6 years ( Year 7 - Finished Year 12 ) the school has beautiful character and the people are kind and friendly, the small class sizes give you a one-on-one feel with the teachers and because of the small amount of students in a class, the teacher gets to know them each individually, which can help with learning. I personally really enjoyed my experience here and the support I got going through VCE was fantastic. I highly recommend this school's FREE instrumental lessons.Overall this school is fantastic for an alternative to mainstream schools. As for some of the negative reviews about discrimination, the school has a very open outlook to accepting children that are on the spectrum and the staff and teachers try to accommodate as best as they can with the resources they have available to make each and every child feel included and looked after.
Some great teachers at this school. It certainly can suit certain students, especially those who are interested in music. However, the greatest problem with the school is leadership. Despite only having 100-150 students at any one time, the Principal hardly knows any students by name (save for the academically gifted). Tensions between teachers and leadership cause a very high turnover rate, you'll notice the teachers have been there for over 10 years or less than 3. However, this school is one of the only options for children that need a smaller class size. It seems especially useful in the short term with the aim to return to a broader, more diverse community once feeling stable and capable in oneself. Please keep in mind to talk with your children about their experiences here and move them on when it is necessary.
Incredible school, I've been going there for 2 years now (since year seven), they have a very inclusive attitude. This is a great school for kids with mental or learning disabilities. The schools FREE music lessons are a huge advantage and I know several people who go to them and really enjoy it. Sherbrookes small classes mean no student is just a number and everyone is included. Because the school is prep to year 12, younger students get support from older, and new year 7 students don't feel outnumbered. Everyone knows everyone and thers a wonderful sence of community. I myself would highly recomend this school to anyone.
I’ve been at Sherbrooke For 5 years, such a beautiful & supportive environment. Every teacher makes it their business to built a strong communicative relationship with each student. They always go completely above and beyond to ensure everyone feels safe and is working towards their highest potential. At Sherbrooke everyone is valued and encouraged to be themselves. I would highly recommend the warm & nurturing environment of Sherbrooke community school.
this school is an absolute disaster the so called therapy dog bit me and the sheep rammed me and the teachers didnt care. i was even bullied by the assistant principal which was so unacceptable even the fact that i seen teachers vaping in school grounds around other students was unbelievable. also my teacher spoke negative things about me and my mother, ive never been more then happy to leave a school on god
Students at this school put me all over the school, I am forever traumatised and I will never get over this event, i am never going to forget what happened to me and I can't sleep at night anymore... My cousin Jimmy was turned into a shrine...
My son was refused enrollment because he has aspergers syndrome. Discrimination at its height. The staff and administration should be ashamed of themselves.
