Great little diner feel. My family and I have been eating at South 21 since I was born, and I still go almost once a week for a good burger and fries. The tarter sauce is a must try you will never find anything that can even come close to how amazing the sauce is. The fried fish is also great, and the portion sizes are great for the price. One of my favorite Charlotte family owned restaurants!

I was looking forward to trying one of the top 10 fried chicken places in town - and near work! I knew I'd have to wait, so I called in my order no issues. The restaurant is easy to find, and inside is a mix of older ceiling and shiny pleather seating. I had to go back to work so when ready I left, and the counter person was nice enough to offer a refill. The fries and chicken were hot so I waited about 10 minutes to eat (the drive back) and they were still good and warm. The fries were nothing amazing but good, and fairly unsalted (if at all) and the roll was the same good but not awesome, the slaw looked great but I dislike vinegar so I don't know. The fried chicken was disappointing. Same batter used on the fish I'm guessing and while hot, juicy and crispy, unseasoned and bland.

I have been going here since I was a little girl, and I have never been more disappointed. I live in Salisbury… so it’s a bit of a drive to get here. I got there at 11, and even waited a few moments after the doors opened before going in. There was a gentleman who helped me place a to-go order, but was in a sense, unprofessional. Before I could finish my order he would talk over me. I have a stuttering problem and I felt very rushed. My family are regulars here. When I come in, they are pretty understanding of my condition. The male who helped me pack the food into a bag (it was a big order) was the nicest out of all of them. I will be going to the drive in south 21 from here on out.

So I just ate here for the first time and I ordered a grilled chicken sandwich added bacon and cheese to it and the combo meal was on special with fries and a drink I decided to get half fries and half onion rings. Great customer service but the food is what I had a issue with. The half and half fries and onion rings only got two onion rings the rest was fries. The chicken breast on the sandwich was so small you couldn’t even see it with out taking the bun off it was loaded with lettuce though. Most definitely not worth the price I paid for it at all. Probably won’t be recommending or returning.

I work for a company police dept we operate in the UNCC area as security for the off campus communities/studrnt living, and I come here in uniform. The first time I came here I received a discount. I do not expect the discount, if I receive one I put whatever the discount was right back to the restaurant as a tip but when the restaurant thinks about me it is appreciated. I just came in this evening to get a BBQ sandwich a female worker rang me up and the male up front made it his mission to come over and make sure she didn't give me a discount. This guy must not realize I do the same job as the local LE.

Pretty good, this is my first time visiting. Everyone was nice from the phone and picking up my food. The only chuckle that I had was “jumbo shrimp” is a filet regular shrimp so “assume” that is jumbo. Kind of cliché. The flounder was good. I’m not sure where exactly this restaurant is originally from buuuuut the coleslaw was just cabbage sitting in some vinegar type dressing - not my cup of tea. Overall it was okay not some place I would go to on the regular basis

I went here for lunch with my husband and got the combo a cheeseburger with fries and added bacon. He end up getting a seafood platter that came with two sides. My lunch was like any normal burger nothing to wow over. Everything does seem to be made fresh so that’s good. My husband told me he didn’t enjoy his meal but unfortunately I couldn’t try it because I cannot have seafood. The lunch comb we had came with drinks that total to 17 dollars and some change before our military discount (came up to 14 something). The place is a nice set up and clean.

As stated in other reviews, I got the fried chicken and it had no seasoning not even salt and crust was way to hard and crunchy. I also got fries that had no salt on them either. I remembered as a kid how much I loved the Sunday chicken dinner for 69 cents and I was very disappointed with what they are offering today. I will never go back because there are just to many places that I would go to spend my money that are better.

South 21 Jr has really good food and they serve it fresh, hot and fast. The service is very friendly. The prices are more than reasonable. It's a great place to take the family. The decor is not so great and bumps my rating from 5 stars to 4. Their hamburgers, onion rings and shakes are excellent and you'll probably come back for more. Their chicken is the crispiest I've ever had ANYWHERE. Unfortunately the coating is bland and the meat a bit dry. With just a little more seasoning it would would truly be outstanding.

We had lunch here the other day. The staff are very friendly and their customer service is exceptional!! The food came out fresh and hot. We had the "trout plate" which came with tartar sauce, fries, coleslaw and a roll. We will definitely be back, next time we will try their burger!! Really glad that we found this place.

This location is not as good as the one on highway 16 North. I think they have potential to do better but they need an intervention from Gordon Ramsay because they are in denial. When I complained about my sandwich with wilted lettuce tomato pickle He said he would make me another one but it would have the same lettuce and tomato and pickle, They should thank me for this post because for every person like me who points out their problem, 10 more left and never come back.

I really was excited to try this place and looking forward to a flavorful juicy burger with fries. It came out fresh to order but it fell flat for me from there. Fries had no seasoning and the burger really didn’t taste like much to me either. Sweet tea wasn’t great either. Customer service was good however and I would give them another shot, just would probably try something different.

The price was good and the service was good but the Hot dog was the worst I have ever had. Why would someone serve the cheapest weeny they would buy? I have had better at a middle school fund raiser. I am sure the owner would not serve this to guests visiting at his home. So, why would he serve this to paying customer? I would not go back there if it were FREE! Circle K has a much better hot dog at a better price. But you have to fix it yourself.

This is truly a place to visit while in Charlotte, I'm a born and raised Charlottean and as long as I can remember this restaurant has always been here, local owners with a loyal customer base. They have a great menu selection however I love their burgers! On my next visit I plan on trying a milkshake, old fashion and made from scratch you can't get better than that! The feel is family oriented, no frills or extras just good food.

My family and I were desperate trying to find a place to eat as we arrived from out of state. We saw this establishment and it was like light was shining straight down from the sky iluminating it to us. As soon as we stepped in, we felt the warmth and the man assisting us was corteuous and professional. I knew he was the owner before I confirmed it, you can tell with the way he was handling us. I would definitely come again!

The food is really fresh but the chicken is fried in the same grease as the fish and made it taste like fish I was so damn disappointed even the skin on the chicken was fishy .get it together.the Cole slaw doesn't be served the worst in Charlotte .

First time eating here and the fried chicken definitely worth driving out tonight for. It was hot, juicy and crispy. Only I do wish you could get a bucket as well as the individual meals. We also had the chicken strips, burger and trout, including the homemade onion rings and tartar sauce. So good. I love that it was cooked to order. So you will wait for your food. Did I mention it was worth it? We will be back.

Waited for a order that was completely wrong they also gave me a brown paper bag nothing covering my food and the food just practically dumped in the bag and who mixes hot and cold foods together in one bag all around a very terrible experience for my first time there I do not recommend this place and will never be going back everyone up there is slow incompetent and should not working customer service

OMG!!! Went to this location on Thursday night before closing to Dine In. Order the Trout dinner with onions rings “crispy” I brought my own salt, pepper, hot sauce, my own fork and alcohol wipes to wipe off table myself but the place was clean and the food was banging DELICIOUS fresh and HOT!!! I have been eating at South 21 for years and love the food. I most say, South 21 Jr. Is a big disappointment. The last three times I have been there the food was not good. Each time hoping it would be better than the last. The last time there was it for me. NO MORE. I will never go back to this location. Fish, Onion rings, Hot dog are the last items I had there, and they are all bad!

Man, love thus little joint. Great hamburgers and French Fries. Lol. The oit dogs, on point. Youca t go wrong at this place. Everyone here is always smiling and nice. Very polite. So don't miss out, stop in and grab a burger. You won't be disappointed

ZERO social distancing for people in line, you can call ahead but still wait cramped with others for 30 minutes (multiple people in line were commenting), then a cashier with her mask hanging from one ear with face exposed. Used to love this place for the food, but can’t see myself going back after seeing the neglect of protocols. Sad end to a legend

Been eating here for over 22 years and everything I've ever had has been delicious. My favorite is the Jumbo cheeseburger combo with lemonade. The fish plate is also wonderful that vinegar based coleslaw I love it usually ask for a double helping. They never disappoint.

Was really excited to find this type of food so close to my home, but was really dissatisfied with the taste. I ordered the shrimp and fish and it was VERY bland. Tried to make it better with hot sauce but ended up throwing the entire plate away. The service was good, but food needs flavoring. Maybe they’re not known for their seafood options.

Just a good local burgers and fries place. Part of the South 21 Driv in family. Fish shrimp fried chicken onion rings and many more items on the menu. A different kind of cole slaw here with a slight hint of sauer kraut in an oil and vinegar dressing. It was delicious. Friendly and fast service in a 50's motif setting. I can't wait to go back.

Still one of the best burgers and chicken in town. Fries and ice tea excellent

My favorite burgers! I've had this as my favorite place to get delivered through postmates for a long time but I finally went in person yesterday and it was great. The staff is nice and funny, the food was fresh to order and bomb. Cute decor and I comfortable arrangement. The prices are hard to beat. Trust me, try it.

Service was a littke slow because they were busy, but the fiod and atmosphere were good. My burger was refreshingly basic -- enough to satisfy without making you feel like you've eaten half a cow. My wife's Greek salad looked great, especially with the added chicken. Plus, two people ate comfortably for less than $20.

Burgers are tasty and much better than regular fast food (drive-thru type). The French fries are tasty and hot. Service was friendly and the food came out quickly. At lunchtime we ordered at the counter and they called out food when ready. If you haven't been before, give it a try, I think you'll enjoy it a lot!

The high rating, is more than accurate. I just ate the tastiest double cheeseburger, with a hot toasted to perfection bun, two good sized patties. Creamy melted cheese. Crisp, fresh, tomato and lettuce. French fries, were on point, not soggy, perfect size, crispy, golden brown. Awesome staff.

If you want something to eat that trys to mimic, I hate to say it but it's this place. If you get the chance please go to East Independence boulevard that is a real south 21. It's not that it's bad it's just............ well The one on independence made it to the Food Network not this place.

Food was not as good tasting as I would have desired. The trout was not bad sized portion, the slaw was not a slaw that I'd go back for, the starter has a sort of pickle taste to it, onion rings were fine seem homemade. I was able to feed 2 adults and 1 child for about 30 dollars.

Solid, dependable old school burger joint. Daily specials plates are a plus, they have fish plates. You can get a burger Carolina style here, but they don't make it messy, which is nice. The onion rings are pretty good, but I don't care for the cornmeal added to the breading.

You know if the line is out the door, then it’s gotta be good. Definitely ma and pop vibes. Their burgers are hands down delicious!

It's a decent place to eat just don't add a tip when you pay upfront because you get zero service after you walk back to counter to get your food mo onw to fill your cup nothing but the young slim girl that works the cash register is nice to look at in her little shorts LOL

Wow. I am absolutely blown away. The food is phenomenal. The service was outstanding. We tried the flounder shrimp and burgers. The slaw was definitely different but it was so good and I never like slaw unless its mine. 45 minute drive from me but I will be back.

We drive 45 minutes to get 2 South 21 jr. And it's always a pleasure and it's always consistent and it's always wonderful tasting. If you love good food it's worth a drive even if it's an hour. Thank you South 21 from the blind man and his beautiful skinny wife

Food was kinda plain. I got the grill chicken dinner with fries. BBQ sauce tasted like watered down ketchup . No seasoning on the fries. My friend got a double burger with chili. And plain ol fries Oh and the sweet tea. That was good sweet tea!! …

Owners/operators know how to treat their customers. The food is always fresh and presented picture perfect. Hats off to the cook who was a young man when the restaurant first opened and he's still with them after all the years.

We use to eat here often. The place is clean & staff good. However, the "jumbo" shrimp looks & taste like the frozen boxed shrimp from the freezer section of the grocery store. It taste like the brand in the blue & white box.

This place is small and very basic, but the food is great. They have burgers, fries onion rings, sodas, milkshakes, etc. Everything is good and the prices are reasonable. Don't let the construction deter you. Give them a try!

Good hot dog...mustard, chili, onions. Son got Super Boy that has two hamburger patties, tomato, lettuce, onions and french fries. Both good, but not as good as the original South 21 drive-in or the one in Matthews.

My family and I love this place! Great old fashioned burger place, everything made to order. My kids love the milkshakes. A visit here has become a Saturday tradition for our family. You should try this place!

First time going to a South 21. Admittedly a little disappointed after all I have heard about them over the years. Burger was just Meh to me. Will have to give the drive-in location on Independence a try.

Wasn't head over heels. It's just ok. I had fried fish and coleslaw. The coleslaw was strange to me. I am used to mayo based coleslaw and theirs is an oil and vinegar based. Fish needed some seasoning.

Food is great, especially the trout and staff is pleasant and helpful. I have been eating at all the South ,21 Drive IN since 1973.

Just ate here. First time. Everything was excellent. Food, service, prices. Had the double cheeseburger with fries. Delicious.
