This school is horrible. I first joined as a 7th grader and had recently moved cities. I tried to make friends but the people there were somewhat hostile and i was left with very few friends throughout the rest of middle school, the academics were below average and my foundation in math became poor, and subsequently i took 2 years of pre-algebra as a result. when high school rolled around i finally connected with other people and became friends with many people. the high school academics were dirt poor, nothing but sitting in front of a computer for hours at a time typing away in a dozed and docile state. i cant remember much from this time period as a result, but only remember feelings of constant exhaustion and grief. i never wanted to wake up, and dreaded the school in its entirety. the real, human teachers there could only be accessed via a waiting list used by 100+ other students, and as a result i could never get the help needed to complete my work. the curriculum is dull, unfinished, and truly embarrassing for any school that could only excel if the school was compared to schools in poor countries. the high schools main classroom was a singular, square shaped box consisting of 100 students and at most 5-6 teachers and 1-2 attendance "guards" who were extremely rude, stuck up, and impatient with students. they hardly let anyone take a break unless it was the pre-scheduled 10-15 minutes breaks every 3 hours, where it was expected you would use the bathroom instead of socializing with your friends with the few moments of freedom that you had. they would scold you and bad mouth you if you requested water or the restrooms during class. no lunches were ever served at the most we had were a room of microwaves and 2 vending machines. everyone there was only there because they had been kicked out of every other school in the district. the bathrooms constantly reeked of marijuana and you could easily purchase drugs from most of the students there. the school also advertises 2 "separate" schools, one for 4-8, and 9-12. this is not the case. the 2 "schools" operate in the same building and lunch breaks are tightly packed together, and you get the result of seniors in HS having to interact with primary school children. I have since moved schools simply because of my distaste of the school, and if i was forced to go back, i would rather die. i will never send any of my own children there and will never donate a single penny to the school in any way. the school is nothing more than a joke, and should be treated as such. the school does not prepare students for the future, but prepares them for dead-end office jobs with poor pay and long hours. but whatever, I'm just a kid......

I've been to a lot of different schools as I'm a military kid and this has been one of the best. The teachers generally seem to care about how everyone's doing and will almost always greet us as we come into Main Lab. The teachers at the session desk are quite nice and have always let me go to the bathroom or get a drink when needed. The Smart Lab is great and gives us many opportunities to do things we would've never been able to do (would recommend picking the laser engraver or 3-D printer projects, they're fun). The supervisors there are also very nice to us and always help us when we need it. The Edgenuity courses can be a bit tedious, but overall, they aren't hard with teachers there to explain whatever you're confused about. It's just a matter of getting the help when you need it. The lesson gives you many opportunities to learn by answering problems before you even get to the graded parts and giving you an assignment with the same basic material as the overall quiz. Students have the freedom to arrange their weekly sessions how they want to and can come in as an extra if they need more time with teachers. However, it should be noted that in order to pass, the student should be able to motivate themself. I've seen tons of kids who sit there almost for the entire three hours and not get anything done. Overall, it's a great school with amazing teachers who generally care about you and how you're doing. The people in the office have always been nice to me and my family, and the principal is kind, as well. There's many opportunities in Smart Lab to do cool things (like use a 3D printer, take pictures with a professional camera, or draw on the computers) that you won't ever get the chance to do in another school. However, you have to be very self-motivated to get through your online classes. The teachers will try to get you to do your best in them, but they can't make you work if you aren't willing to. If you're motivated, though, you'll have a ton of fun. (Also, for sports, the school offers volleyball, basketball, and soccer. The girls varsity volleyball is extremely good and the coach is very supportive. The soccer coach we had in 2019 was amazing, as well. The soccer team only won once and he still had us all being optimistic and was extremely supportive of us) And note: this is for SSLC. A lot of the reviews I've seen on here are for the Middle School which is kind of sad... To think that adults can't see what school they're posting for.

I attended SSLC in my 6th grade year. The kids were very sweet and I was able to get ahead in both math and English, I would highly recommend. My only problem was that the school handled drama among students in a very strange way. I have attended public schools as well and they seemed to handle it a lot more professionally. An example is where a friend was leaving to be homeschooled and had told me and her friends. She was absent that day and We were very sad that she was leaving, so we were planning to write her a note. We we’re able to get students in our class in on it. While in English me and another student were pulled out for “spreading rumors” and lying about her switching, and was publicly scolded in front of our class. We tried to explain why, but the Administrator would not hear it. The very next day the student switched and collected her belongings and we were proven correct and got no apology. There were more instances like this that I just found strange looking back that would have been handled a lot differently and better in a public school setting. The school is very good with new students, and made sure that no one was left alone at lunch, which is very unique. I wish it had more clubs, would look a lot better on college applications and would engage students a lot more.

A few weeks back my child and I arrived for an appointment the person whom we were supposed to meet with was not there. A lovely gentlemen showed us around the facility assured us that someone would be in contact with me to go over my child’s needs and so forth. He was very nice made us feel like there was hope for her he was very positive very kind. WE NEVER GOT THIS PHONE CALL. We explored a few different things throughout the summer. Today 7/29/19 I called back to your school and the extremely rude registrar lady was anything but nice or helpful. When asked if I could speak to some regarding my daughters needs before registration as to not waste their time. She scoffed at me and said well what does she need is she special ED in the most hateful tone. I replied No as my daughter is AP classes at a local High school but has some health issues that are preventing her from every day attendance. I explained her disease and anxiety issues, this lady rudely says there are about 80 people in a room at a time so this isn’t the place for her. Then told this rude hellish of a women that she is useless and this is not the place for my child. Please teach this lady some people skills before she runs off all your students.

My son took the online health class (e2020) for high school in order to get that graduation requirement out of the way. Lectures are long and tedious, and test questions often test some minute detail that was discussed in the lecture that has little to do with learning material. The questions almost felt like they were trying to trick you rather than test if you have an understanding of the material. To make things worse, if you miss a question in the quiz or homework section, they will not tell which one you got wrong, and then they ask the same question on the tests in each section. My son managed to complete the course with hours and hours of work with an overall 97% in the class, but it really was torture. He is a straight A student who is normally able to breeze though material, but given the tedious nature of the course, there was no way to speed things up. He had planned to take NM History through SW Secondary Learning as well, but instead he switched to Hope Connection which was much less time to complete. If you are looking for a place to get easy requirements out of the way, SW Secondary is NOT the place to go.

This school is what you make of it. If you have a bad attitude, you're not going to like it, if you have a good attitude you'll be much more receptive toward what they have to offer. To the kid who said the teachers are paranoid control freaks: they have to be because some of those kids are an absolute nightmare. They cheat off of websites, and that led the teachers to have to block everything. If I have a question, I go ask the teachers for help, that is what they're there for. The quizzes and practice show you what you got wrong, the topic test and the cumulative exam do not. If you passed the quizzes you should be able to pass the topic test. And to the parents, you can hardly comment because you do not go to this school. You do not know the intricate workings of the school. You only see what your kid wants you to see, unless of course, you are the one doing your kids school work.

Southwest Secondary Learning Center is an amazing school, I don’t know where I would be without it and all of the teachers that I grew to know over the course of almost 4 years. This is school is hard, I won’t lie. That is probably one of the reasons it has such a low star rating, it’s easy to fall behind. Although, I don’t know another school that allows you to plan a schedule (like you would in college), let’s you have days off in your week so you can have a job, or focus on other activities. I learned so much not just as a student, but as an adult. I felt ready to face the real world when I left here, it was a lot of work, but also a lot of fun. I wouldn’t be where I am today without my school and I can’t imagine myself anywhere else. Thank you SSLC for changing my life and seeing the potential in me when I couldn’t see it in myself.

My boys have been attending Southwest Learning Center for 2 years now (1 for 2yrs and 1 for a year). One has been there for 4th and 5th, and one has been there for 7th. They are a New Mexico Charter school that has 4th-12th. They have an excellent academic program that we have experienced so far. The staff have been amazing and very helpful! I was especially impressed with how well they adjusted to the virtual learning. They provided material before schools were shut down and went above an beyond to provide the best virtual learning and support possible. The school was already equipped to transition to virtual learning, so our boys never lost any learning time. Thank you to all of the staff for your hard work and time! We appreciate you all!

I went to this school through middle school and never thought it was a good school I felt like the building wasn’t fit to be a school Because it’s not it was a grocery store. The building has few windows that are for the principals I always thought that was very unfair children or anyone should be able to see outside and natural light being in the same place for so long the school had skylights but my peers and I would feel anxious when it would snow and we wouldn’t be able to see it. The school also had single doors where there should be double doors and everyone would have to walk though one door at the same time. Teachers were good except my Spanish teacher at the time I was there

The staff here is incredibly in the wrong. They focus more on their paycheck than the actual education of children. My son was threatened by a teacher and I will not tolerate this sort of behavior by adults. I question how some of the faculty maintains a job. It surprises me that they were able to get degrees when their actions exhibit the intelligence of infants. This is not the first problem I have had with the administration at this school by a long shot. In fact when I speak to them about the treatment of my son, I am mocked. Please understand before enrolling your child here that their education and well being will not often be taken care of. Please reconsider. I am.

Teachers don’t care if the students pass or not they are not able to give the students the help they need!! They are also not in touch with parents when kids get into trouble!!! All in all they shouldn’t even get one star!!! APS is way better then this school!!! Never going to recommend this school!!! Maybe if the teachers cared more about there students it would be a better school!!! There is also a 6th grade teacher who needs to learn to be nice to her students you are rude and need to learn to help the kids not throw them under the bus just because you don’t like them!!!

  • Tina Lambert

Amazing school, superior staff, and recognizably five star education. My daughter attended for 3.5 years and absolutely loved the freedom, she excelled in all her classes and obtained dual-credit through CNM. She was able to write, illustrate a published children's book. The computer lab at this school is top notch, they really focus on the children their own strengths and weaknesses. Each child is different in their own way, but as a parent to see the smile on her face each and every day made all the difference in her life. Thank you to all the amazing staff!!

Only one individual that teaches at this establishment, that up lifts and encourages. Pushing students to be the best they can be. I've herd countless testimonials from multiple students saying that the majority of teaches belittle and discourage there students. They are not there to teach they are there for the paychecks. Please realize your kids are the future of this county. They need to be placed in an Environment that encourages/uplifts not one that belittles and puts down personal thought and growth. Sincerely a Concerned individual.

We have had our fourth grader in Southwest for half of the school year and this school is far improved from the APS elementary school we had attended for the past 3.5 years, and it is Graded “A”. We are extremely happy with our child’s interactions with the teachers and staff at Southwest. Our child is thriving so far. Is there bullying? I think there is in all schools and in life. Are there pros and cons? Sure. No place is perfect for everyone. Check out the school. Weigh your pros and cons. Make an informed decision. We are happy.

My daughter went here for 6th-8th grade, My niece was here for 7-8th and now my son is here for 4-6th. the school is what your student makes it. The teachers care and if your student tries and asks for help if they are not doing well the staff will help them. If you have true custody issues I would not put your student here as they dont ask for ID's to pick your student up and lack of supervision for after school\daycare is very concerning. The bathrooms are always nasty, my kids say because they dont have a janitor.

  • Madison Sharp

The school would be better if the faculty cared about their students more than their own image. The educational system needs to be reworked as a whole but when it comes down to it... if you have a lousy staff, no one is going to benefit from being on campus. Students would probably learn more from a skeleton than they would from most SSLC teachers.

This school is way better than Eldorado and I actually get help with work if I'm not getting the concept of it. The only bad thing is that we had a solar eclipse assignment and not a lot of people knew until they retold us and sent us an email a week later but the assignment was due 3 days after the email was sent.

  • D Lansdell

In my PERSONAL opinion, these school are substandard in most areas: Education, Admin, and Building. Parents should really check with several parents, media, and public/court records before enrolling their children - whether Secondary or Primary/Preparatory Do your due diligence - the results may surprise you.

  • Swizzle Styx

I have gone to this school since 4th grade and am currently in 9th it has its ups and downs, but overall pretty good. My only complaint is that they say you can go at your own pace...as long as you do the percentage EXACTLY how they say you have to do it.

  • Jonathan Ortiz

This school is the most irresponsible school ive ever experienced. I thought that the whole point of working for a school system is to be helpful and informative to students and parents. This school doesn't even put in effort to do their basic jobs.

  • skylar m.

southwest is the worst school ive ever been to , mrs lutz is unfair and treats students different and favors students she likes. boring school , no communication with others . i do not recommend this school for any body.

  • Haley Hankins

the classes are easy but the teachers single out kids and treat everyone differently. i left aps in order to be in a healthier school environment and the kids there create a toxic environment. this school is a no-go fam

  • taco Sanchez

I went there for a day and the lady working outside singled me out and expelled me for standing and putting my hoodie on and called the cops for looking suspicious

  • Jesse Kopchick

the worst school ever the teachers treat students like crap dont go here unless the teacher is your parent other then that you will get treated like crap.

  • cassandra otero

Don't come here the teachers are the worst the whole school system is irresponsible they care more about their image then the children

  • Alex Lumanog

I enjoyed my experience here at this school I've had great teachers through my 4th and 8th grade.

  • L F

The teachers single out students and pick on them. Not a healthy environment by any means.
